  • Day 5 of the West Highland Way unfolds with a sense of excitement as I bid farewell to the quaint village of Tyndrum and set my sights on the majestic landscapes ahead. Following the tranquil glen, I am treated to breathtaking views of Ben Dorain, a towering peak that dominates the horizon.
After a brisk two-and-a-half-hour hike, I arrive at Bridge of Orchy, where I pause briefly to indulge in a delectable breakfast roll and rejuvenating coffee. Energised and refuelled, I press on, passing by newly refurbished wild camping spots by the bridge before embarking on the ascent over the hill.
As I climb, I am rewarded with awe-inspiring vistas along Loch Tulla, serving as a testament to the natural splendour of the Highlands. Reaching Inveroran, marking the halfway point of our journey for the day, I take a moment to appreciate the beauty of my surroundings before continuing onward.
The 10-mile trek along the historic drovers road to Glen Coe unfolds with each step, accompanied by the rugged beauty of Rannoch Moor and the towering Munros that line the path. Finally, I round the corner into Glen Coe, greeted by the proud silhouette of Buchaille Etive Mor and my destination for the day behind the Kingshouse Hotel. As I settle in for the night, I reflect on the day's adventures, grateful for the opportunity to experience the unparalleled beauty of the West Highland Way.

There was a drovers' route along the west side of Rannoch Moor and the military road, built 1751 and 1752, (including the bridge at Bridge of Orchy) followed this route. Telford rebuilt the road, following a lower contour in the southern part of the moor, which necessitated bridges rather than fords.
The Romans did campaign in the highlands (Tacitus mentions the Battle of Mons Graupius) that involved its fleet sailing all around the north of Scotland. There are the remains of Roman Forts, probably as far north as Inverness (Cawdor) but I don't know of any roads built further north than the Gask Ridge frontier.

Thank you for posting this. I see it is a bit too rough for my wheelchair.

Hello. This year I walked the Rob Roy Way. Mostly ways and roads suitable for bikes as a big part of it is the National Cycle Route 7. So I guess you could do that with a kind of sport wheelchair? I wish you good adventure and always safe trails!"

@@sfchaney Go out the back of the Hotel, head along the river to the right of the West Highland Road and there are loads of spots you can put a tent. Just makes sure you're a reasonable distance away. There are public showers which are £1 coin operated. To be honest I didn't use them as they were pretty disgusting. Hope that helps. G♥️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
