Paul glad you have highlighted the dangers of unlaced boots. Couple years ago I tripped in Cornwall and fell in front of a car that only just stopped in time as I fell in the road. Then last year tripped same way and fell off a path which, had it been few moments earlier, could have been life changing. Both times laces caught in hooks. Unlaced hooks on boots are an unaddressed death trap

Good luck on the WHW. I've done it 3 times, love it. Its a bit tougher than the cumbria wy. My only advice is that the more weight you carry the more you'll enjoy your camping and the less weight you carry the more you'll enjoy your walking....its 97 mile walk 😊

Its good to see you demonstrating that you don't need a car to get out camping. I have friends who live in the city that say they cant go camping because they have no means of transport, or it costs too much to get anywhere worthwhile. Did you get any funny looks from people on the bus, with your hiking gear and backpack? I can see some people being put off for those reasons.

I've not done camping involving a car since 2003.
I've used a Brompton folding bike + train + bus and biked and camped.
I've done loads of train+bus+camping trips. The 2 quid deal is brilliant before that I did the 7 day 30 quid bus pass, hop on , hop off, mixing the bus in with hiking.

My WHW advice. While it's perfectly possible to wild camp the whole way, by camping either end of the restricted zone, don't rule out staying on campsites. It's a busy walk and you'll meet lots of other hikers that way; the camaraderie is great and the pubs too. I'm still in regular contact with other hikers I met 8 years ago on the WHW from Germany and the USA. You'll miss out on that if you only wild camp.

Stunning sunset. Nice tent, have used a somewhat similar tent for the WHW, also 2-p/3-season, with a vestibule for cooking/wet gear. Unfortunately it was inner-first, then outer-pitch tent. Not ideal after a long day hiking.
The mostly mesh inner kept condensation to a minimum but did also allow for cold air being blown inside continuously.
A couple of nights I wished I brought a light bivvy or a sleeping bag liner for just a bit of extra insulation.
It's a beautiful trail which offers magnificent views, have a great time!

I got excited and rushed into ordering one of these but I think I'll be returning it. I don't think the tent will be sturdy enough to risk taking up to the lakes etc. I wanted something ultralite(much lighter than my elixir 2) but also didn't want to use Treking poles to pitch it as I don't use them or pay though the nose. I may have to just save up for a more expensive more robust alternative

BTW, I had my own bus horror show as a teenager. One afternoon after school, during the bad winter of '78/79 I stepped off the bus into a deep snow drift and fell flat on my face, as two girls I was doing my best to impress watched on with glee...if you look up the word 'embarrassed' in the OED you'll see a little picture of my scarlet face next to it!!😡

Those OEX tents look to be cut and sewn beautifully.

I quite like the tent colour. That's the one downside to walking boots... they're a pain to put back on but I've still to find a good alternative to flip flops.

I haven’t ripped a boot but quite a few times I’ve caught the lace of one boot in the hook of the other boot and tripped, not fun.

My problem with the colour is it's blue not that it's not stealthy.
I prefer stealthy green or brown, but don't mind red or orange, no need to hide here in Scotland.
Don't like the trend to mesh inners though, not suitable for UK climate, too cold and draughty. Solid fabric inners are not generally significantly heavier and can be lighter.

I have exactly the same boots. I got 5 months out of them before two eyelets ripped out. Contacted bare foot and they offered a new pair, two days later I had another email from them saying the offer had been withdrawn. No explanation and no answer to any further emails. Poor quality for a very expensive boot and the worst service I’ve ever experienced.

Shocking what happened there. Seeing that, and reading all the stories about the lack of durability of Altra's, has stopped me buying zero drop or barefoot footwear. I'd like more toe box space but I manage ok and I know my Renegade's or Terrex won't fall apart instantly.

Am I correct to think that Paul prefers tents with the dog door? It seems all his preferred tents have the single front door opening. Or is that just the way most tents are in Europe?
