I don't understand that bit of the route either. It would make more sense to make the existing route a diversion for those who want to avoid Drymen, and have the official route head up the old Gartmore Road at the Clachan to join back up with the current route. I love the Clachan - the food is excellent and they're very accommodating - I turned up once when a kit test walk had gone wrong |(my waterproof jacket was not waterproof). I was soaked to the bone and they still welcomed me in even though I'm sure my jacket left a puddle! I quite like going up Craigie Fort, though it was better when the view wasn't as obscured by the trees.

Whaligoe Steps - There used to be 365 steps - one for every day of the year, but the top ones were vandalised in the 50s or 60s, and they lost a few, I think. If you can trace an old BBC Radio "Scotland out of doors" and their NC500 tour, there is a lot of usefuil information in there about the steps. Great video, thanks!

Hoping you can give me info. I'm cycling from rowardennan to crianlarich on Saturday. Been told to take the high rd but wondered if you can give me more info on where the high rd meets again and is it all cycleable?

After you avoid the right turn up the hill and go straight along the loch, how long is it before the WHW joins back again? 1mile?

Great wee film. We're going to walk the WHW in 2025. As we have been up Conic Hill many times before, the bypass route will be just fine early on day two.

We went through Conic Hill, no baggage transfer, each carrying our own tents and stuff. I won't say so much as I regret it, but it'd been wiser not to do. One of my trail mates couldn't finish the WHW and I blame it partially on going through Conic hill.

I always want to watch these videos but find myself getting bored and not finishing. Yours is over and hour long and I enjoyed it thoroughly and found it genuinely helpful, and it was engaging because you weren’t talking at your audience, but being conversational, I even took notes, thank you!

Did the WHW 15 years ago, maybe less, guy called Chick - referee in the Glasgow leagues - was on his 13th trip!

My trick was to skip Blackwater, grab some lunch in town and then tackle the hill out and cut a good few miles off my last morning with a wild camp.

When we hiked the trail a few years back, we took the high path. We continued on from Inversnaid that afternoon and that part of the trail is ROUGH. If we had been finishing the day at Inversnaid, I would have done the low path.

Wow a strange few weeks for you - agree the NHS is worth its weight in gold. Glad to see the Vern 1 still serving well.

Going up Conic Hill wasn’t too bad but coming down on those steps was hard on my knees. Thankfully I had two walking poles that made a huge difference.

Shame you couldn’t go on as planned but no shame in calling it. No one wants to hear of missing people (or worse) on these magnificent walks. I’m doing the WHW in January as a 50th birthday adventure BUT am well prepared to not be doing it in equal measure if the weather is forecast to dangerous extent.

I enjoyed the climb up but the steps did havoc on my knees. I thought I'd injured myself at one point as the rest of the day I was getting sharp pains. Thankfully it went away. I'm not sure I'd do it again - just getting old! I did climb to the summit too and found it extremely slippery. Big coachload of children made it very noisy though!

Possibly the most down to earth, informative, honest and truly enjoyable summaries of the walk, which I’d like to do in the not too distant future. Appreciate your honest thoughts on certain issues and your careful and considerate approach…no daredevil behaviour. Currently planning my WHW trip for next April so working my way through your videos, they are So helpfull, thank you. I own a few senchi hoodies and tops and love them, so light yet so warm . The leggings are next on my list 😊👍

So that's where the road splits! I completely missed that sign post on my recent WHW journey. Now I know what to look out for next time. Whilst I don't regret taking the Conic Hill route due to being treated to some stunning views that I wish I'd taken more time to enjoy... I do agree the alternative route has it's place for the reasons you listed.

You'll find out my precise answer next week. But I did meet a young American Swiftie, over for the murrayfield show, in slippy trainers and wet denim up there. I kept him safe and entertained on the way down to Lock Lomond.

Nice video Gordon. Now I have to say you do mention 5 good reasons for missing out Conic Hill, however, I would only miss it if it was closed and that was the case the last time we met - I think it was umpteen fallen trees. I was glad mind you as I was heading to Rowardennan on my day 1. 😂. About to start my next walk next Sunday (6 Oct), number 89 and really can’t wait and will be going over Conic Hill for the fantastic views. I hope our paths cross again some day. Keep up the good work.
