I think one of the most underrated jokes is when they're sitting at the airport in New York, and John Candy is reading a "smut" novel called "The Canadian Mounted."

'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' with Steve Martins & Michael Caine should be your next port of call, a very funny movie... Martin made several great movies at the start of his cinematic career 'The Man With Two Brains', 'The Jerk', 'Roxanne', 'L.A Story', 'Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid', all are more than worthwhile...

You don't expect a serious twist at the end of a lighthearted comedy film. John Candy's character Del isn't really spending Thanksgiving with his wife - he's homeless & she died years ago.

  • @Nate6981
    @Nate6981 2 года назад +5

One of my all time favorite John Hughes films. I watch it every Thanksgiving. I just love of Del and Neal overcome all these nightmare obstacles and become unlikely friends in the process. There's just something so triumphant about them walking down Neal's street carrying Del's trunk. I love it.

There are not a lot of Thanksgiving films made but this is my favorite . I enjoyed your reactions and comments so much for this film and I am glad you got some laughs from it . I have traveled during Thanksgiving from the East coast to California before and I am very Thankful that it was a smooth flight and not quite as eventful as Neal and Del's . Thank you very much Tim for this delightful reaction . I am glad there are more coming.

The scene where they get robbed by the long haired kid. That was part of a deleted scene. Earlier when Steve's character was in the shower and doing is thing, John Candy orders a pizza and beer. He doesn't tip the delivery boy, who was the long haired kid who robbed them.

When the guy chewing tobacco wipes his mouth and then shakes Steve Martin's hand, that was an actual grosed out look from Steve. John Hughes told the guy to do it on that take for a funnier reaction. Steve was unaware.
Also, i here there is like an hour and a half of cut footage that has never been seen and lost.

The reason the wife always looked sad, is because she believed he was having an affair. Until he walks in the door and she hears her husband introduce Dell to his father in-law, she was so sure. They cut that part of the storyline because theu felt it was too heavy for a holiday movie.

Candy and Martin had great chemistry; it's too bad they weren't paired again before John's untimely death. If you're looking for Steve Martin films, I'd recommend 'The Jerk' and 'All of Me.' Candy's movie career was kind of spotty, but you might try 'The Great Outdoors' and the legendary 'The Blues Brothers,' in which he played a supporting role.

The best thing about this movie (stealing a thought from Roger Ebert here) is that the big confrontation between Neal and Del comes at the end of the first act. Most traditionally structured films would put that scene at the end of the second act. By getting it out of the way early, Hughes clears the stage for literally anything to happen between these characters.

My reaction when I first watched this movie was laughter continuous laughter that my face hurt by the time the movie was over.
This movie has a post credits scene too, btw.
Also, there were three actors with small parts in this movie that were also in Ferris Bueller.
Planes, Trains, & Automobiles is the best U.S. Thanksgiving movie ever!
Dutch, also a John Hughes movie. Also a road trip to Chicago movie, is the second best Thanksgiving movie ever. It stars Ed O'Neil and has so many of the same beats this movie has, but it's still its own story.
John Candy has been in so many great movies. He's a great sidekick character and has done a lot of those parts, plus movies where he was the main star.
These are the movies I recommend:
    Splash (With Tom Hanks)
    Brewster's Millions (With Richard Pryor)
The Great Outdoors (With Dan Aykroyd)
    Summer Rental
    Delirious
    Cool Runnings
These are some great Steve Martin movies:
    The Jerk
    Three Amigos
    Parenthood
    Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

    All Of Me
    Little Shop of Horrors
