@@JayLeonardJ this video is what sold me on the Crayon. All the tones you demonstrated where sick, and highly usable. My favorite is the funk tone. I love using it fairly clean, always on. It gives you that extra something, something you hear on old studio albums. Question- how did you get that funky sound at higher volumes? I’m using a small, 20 watt tube amp (voiced like an old Blues Jr), and just can’t get it to get too loud on those settings (and this little amp gets LOUD, certainly for bedroom/rec room setup). Also- have you ever tried using the Crayon (or the Color Box) in the effects loop? If so, what’s your opinion of the result. Again, thanks for the awesome reviews and demos!
Just noticed around the 3:00 mark that the JHS crayon is sitting on top of Crayola crayons. Well done. At the moment you are my favorite RUclipsr. Keep those videos coming!
@@JayLeonardJ hi Jay! I do love the tone of your white strat on let's dance. Can you help me how I can get that tone? Is this the crayon pedal used on it? An other? Thank you so much for your videos and help/advices
I love the energy of this guy's videos! He gets right to the point, doesn't waste your time and has great sound quality. He's pretty funny too. Keep it it up J!'
Still not sure I like the pedal, but really, really enjoyed the review. There are plenty of reviewers out there. I like watching both skilled players use gear, as well as more average players who sound closer to how I might sound in my basement. I liked watching this review because it reminded me that we're all nerds for this stuff because it's supposed to be FUN. Great job, great playing, and it was both informative and legitimately funny.
Another gem, you tore that up bud. Loving the Funkaholic and that Let's Dance intro sounded amazing. Stevies outro, ohh yes 8). An old mxr micro amp or my Homebrew germania. Its built on the old Rangemaster circuit and cuts through anything, even my wife yelling at me.
I love your reviews! You have FUN, and I love that you demonstrate several sounds & practical ways to use the pedal you’re reviewing. I am happily a subscriber. Keep plugging. You will get more people. You have been very helpful identifying how to fit a guitar into a mix/band. Watching you has helped me play better.
Nicely done! I use a hot wax, volumes at 9, crayon gain at 11, hot tubes gain at 10. There is an aria before it. Thanks for the vid! Always looking for a funk button!
Great videos, you're very talented. Found you via Facebook doing a Keeley 30ms demo (which I bought & LOVE). My favorite tone-sweetening Boost is the MojoHand Speak Easy (or the EP boost side of the MojoHand Rook Royale,, same thing as Speak Easy basically)
I’ve been waiting to get this pedal for some time, ever since I heard it kind of does the old Neve console “direct in” thing. This demo showed me it can do so much more. It’s rare that I really dig every application I see someone use a pedal for, but that was the case here. It’s also nice to know it plays well with the Big Muff, as that’s my go to fuzz/distortion (I have several on my board). When I’m playing Smashing Pumpkins style stuff, I like using my SoniCake 5th Dimension set as a UniVibe with the rate turned all the way down. It just gives everything extra movement. I use one of the flanger modes on the same pedal set to give me that rotating speaker sound for Pink Floyd stuff. I keep the rate all the way down for almost everything, except songs where you really hear that Leslie sound dominate things, like “Any Color You Like”.
I love using my EP Boost to add some sparkle to my solos, and I sometimes I'll run a distortion pedal with low gain at the end of my chain since they're pedals that are designed to emulate amps. I just run into a Twin Reverb or a Bassman reissue so it's clean as a whistle so running my Big Bloom at the end of the chain kinda makes me feel like I own a Dumble :') 💸💸💸
Great demo! Diggin the energy and conciseness. As for your question, I'm using a Mayflower always on, a Voyager in front to add some mid beef and gain and push the MF, and then a morning glory on top of all that for signing sustain and sizzle for larger parts of songs. And sometimes I'll throw a miniTS on top of all that for a really out front mid push solo tone. And an RC front in line for tone shaping ;) may sound overkill, but it builds up and tears down easily and consistently.
I use a Keeley modded TS9 with the drive turned down into an Andy Timmons for lead tones, and it sounds KILLER. I already had the TS9 before I got the Andy Timmons. I'd like to try this in front of the Andy Timmons also.
I use either a Keeley modded Rat and Keeley modded TS9 through a Mesa MK I with a 112 EVM 12L, or a Plimsoul and stock TS9 through a Mesa Stiletto Deuce with a 112 EVM 12L. The TS9 has the dirt on 0, the tone and level @ 3:00, thats my over the top works with or without the Rat or Plimsoul!
For many years I used a Boss DS-1 Distortion with the tone knob rolled all the way down but the secret was what came after it. The Boss Enhancer. It's the best gain tone I've ever gotten in my whole life. Sadly, the pedalboard got stolen and the Enhancer is discontinued and I've never been able to find another one.
With the release of the CB v2, and having owned both, have to agree that the Crayon is probably the more useful pedalboard tool. The Standahl transformer sounds special and awesome, - but it's largely overkill, - lost into a small combo. The Death by Audio Interstellar Deluxe is an awesome gain stager and stacker, but doesn't really do clean. For that, I rely on compressors., and a Morning Glory.
Techically I put this right before my distortion, BUT the tumnus by wampler...after distortion it just acts like a boost but before, the tone super meaty
+mikey bennett The Sweet Honey is definitely one one of the most touch sensitive pedal I've used. However, I have only worked with the PCB version and not the Handwired one.
Nice demo. Awesome funk hand bro. How do you not be hitting the pickup switch with your fingers out like that? Seems like some high voodoo to me. Not a dig, just, working it out myself.
I've been using a Prince of Tone lately! Relatively cheap and I dig all the clipping options on it. That Klon is awesome btw! But if you're nervous about taking it to gigs, I would recommend you check out the Bondi Effects Sick As. A friend of mine owns the company, and he makes very high quality pedals that achieve great tone.
+Elijah Coleman I just checked out the Bondi Effects page. Looks really cool! I really dig the Prince of Tone too, definitely one of the all time greats!
Monster playing as usual! I have a couple pedals I really dig using. I have an Odie pedal you pick up on Reverb for about $100. I run it at 18 volts but it works good with 9 volts. Anyway it is a 3 in 1 gain clipping stage so it basically can produce a TS-808, TS9, or a Klon type sound. It also has a eq for mid bump, bass boost, and flat. I've never owned a Klon but this pedal I have it set noon on everything in the Klon setting with a mid range hump and it just gives me that extra boost to cut though on a solo especially with 18 volts! My other pedal I use is a Way Huge Saucy Box HC when I want to slam the preamp.

Even when the gain is cranked!! It sounds delightful. Also plays really well with all my other pedals..especially Charlie Brown!..and it looks beautiful!!..I got the gold with oxblood knobs!
I Hav an older bassman head(think u said u played blackface fenders sometimes) into a buffer then comp and then rc booster v2 is 2stage ,an amp 11 and last but surly not least would b a timmy. Also soulfood with the buffer on .Then delay and eq. So far is all i need n then some. Could it b better , probably so.
I have a 5e3 clone that breaks up great, but can be loose in the bass? I’m rotating between a couple of fuzz pedals that give me a tighter sound with guitar volume rolled down, and thick, fuzzy goodness around 8/9...Armageddon at ten! This pedal intrigues me because of it’s versatility and crazy tones. Not sure how it would clean up though?
Hey @JayLeonardJ If you look closely you notice your main camera is focused on the background and not on you .. the Yamaha monitor looks nice and sharp but you're not
