This is probably Lou Reed's best song. The conversationalness of it is what makes it so moving. It seems kinda clumsy at first "You asked me for some speed/I thought it was for you," but he's dropping in bits of conversational language in a really artful way. It's really a pretty daring extension of his usual songwriting voice. And John Cale's viola lines are gorgeous.
,,Songs for Drella" the best of the best, say thank you for this permomance ,you are the best!! Lou I miss you, R.I.P.😎Just now I'm 63!! Time is going on!!
My friend died in December, he was 24 years old and I'd know him since he was 11. I don't think there's been a day since I heard the news that I haven't listened to this song. It's so honest. Sometimes in friendship there is resentment, there is definitely regret and loads of misunderstandings. It's good to know I'm not alone in that. But the above all else, there's longing for the days that can never come back.
he was one of those artists who's a human first, artist second. he could work with that, striking deep into the listener if necessary, but relateable nevertheless.
have you seen John Cale's eyes, we can see a so hard emotion, this is more than a song, it's like if they could speak to Warhol, like if he could hear them. so beautiful concept to make an album for Andy Warhol's memory
This is incredibly moving and it seems so right that Cale & Reed got to say au revoir to Warhol in this way. The sentimentality and genuine love of Warhol shine though-I think it's a beautiful song and it reeks of regret and misgivings for their friend and mentor.
i love this album, but it's so dark and full of sorrow... a last apology which will never be heard. people forgive your enemies and apologize to your friends & ex-friends before it's too late. peace.
Indeed...I heard John Cale was in Chicago just last month (April 17) and played Hello It's Me...so close to Indy and I didn't find out until it was tooooooo late :(
@@jordanparman9433 Can't quite make it out, but maybe it's 'You'd get this time' (i.e. stretch in prison), no more for attempting to shoot someone - at least that would make sense...

I LOVE to listen to Lou while reading the French translation! What a great way to brush up on my French! Love Lou but can't get over John throwing a wine glass at my friend who was living with him, knocking out her front tooth. What an ass!!!
This is truly painful to watch. This song is so touching in the ususal album version but actually seeing them perform it is almost unbearable. Almost get's me crying everytime...
Can anyone explain the line "You get less time for stealing a car..."? I thought he was complaining about the jail sentence of the shooter, but then shouldn't it be "more time"?
No he meant what he meant. The shooter received or was sentenced to less time in jail for shooting Andy than some other people received or were sentenced to serve for car theft. It's just the way its said might be confusing.
@UhOh3991 I think thats better as it goes- evokes lou's own lack of a moral anchor or compass at the time- caroline says or candy says are really lou says anyway
“I know it’s late and coming, but it’s the only way I know. Hello it’s me” Lou is one of the best writers of his generation
One of the best albums in the history of recorded music - for certain.
deepest.

what a great line. very much a lou reed line, concise and cuts you to the bone.
Goodbye Lou.
Marcin Braus Gustaw I've just realized... he's gone too :( !
the day he died i went to work with this in my ipod, crying to myself
Oh, Lou! I thought you meant when Andy died, I was confused..

Wow... A little teared up here. Reed's lyrics are sometimes so simple, but they hit the nail right on the head and tap into the right emotions.
Krystal Lake I can relate, it's very sincere.

This is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, it breaks my heart every time.

I saw this live at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in '90. It was fantastic.
It was a great concert
what a LOVE song. its about respect and two great men
i cant hold the tears back anymore
This is the song my father would sing to me. i would fall asleep, thinking, andy, we have not meet, but if we did, we would not regret.
R.I. P. Lou Reed. Thanks for saving my life with rock'n'roll.

This album is awsome.I love these songs
Such a sweet song

Hello, It's me...
Thanks Lou for all your wonderful song writing. RIP.
i love this album, but it's so dark and full of sorrow... a last apology which will never be heard.

i once had a brother, for he passed on valentines day.

eh, che si può dire ... un capolavoro!
I love Lou Reed but this album and Berlin are definitely his crowning glories. Searing honesty, strong emotion and redemption all rolled into one.
"Things always seem to end before they start". Ain't that the truth?
As I'm replying to you 8 years later.
This is probably my all time favorite Lou Reed song. Thanks for posting this.
"you'd get less time for stealing a car"
Brilliant.
Shouldn't it be "You'd get more time"?

@UhOh3991 Actually if you listen closely, Lou sings "I'm sorry IF I doubted your good heart" on the album, the lyrics aren't changed.
good night!

yes that's Work
Tenho tanta pena das 26 pessoas que dizem que não gostam.
Song titles aren't copyrighted; hence he didn't pay Rundgren (nor did Led Zep pay Lou for the title "Rock 'n' Roll" and "Ocean").
Ok, is Lou Reed THE most clever person in the world with words or is he just in the Top 5?
@UhOh3991 I see, thank you.
