John Cale is my hero. He is a true artist. He's done just about every style. He's produced some great records for other people. He's done cool stuff with Brian Eno(another great artist). He can write great poetry. He can write great melodies. He can punk rock. He can pop rock. He can go far out into space.
He's one of the best around. Left field and passionate. The way art should be.

john cale is one of the most interesting and original musicians ever, when you're exploring his long discography you never know what's next, like bowie. he is so bizarre, intelectual and sometimes so hermetic. he can be a gentleman, he can be so aggresive, he has no limits.

It's just brilliant all over. I'm not a musician but I love the weird drum beat. The guitar solo is wonderful. But the heartfelt lyrics are just so touching. Or maybe that's just me. I love this song.

      @SeeDeeSea 2 года назад

@@fromagepat I know it's unusual, and I'm sure that it's not very easy to do. It adds so much to the music for me. It sounds like Cale is pouring his heart out, and that's not always easy to do. So, the beat is perfect.

That's Kevin Tooley my former brother in law on drums. Was married to his older brother Edward Tooley jr. Saw him play the drums for Mr. polite and humble John Cale at The Bottom Line in NYC. I miss those days so much. Great show btw. Chris Spedding on guitar. He was a bit shy and reserved but cool. Great guitarist.

Interesting version of a great song. I like the drums. If you wanted to stick some drums on a Cale solo version, you'd never think of adding that drum lick. That's what makes Cale special, I suppose.
The little guitar solo by Ollie Halsall at the end is breathtaking, and that solo makes this my favourite version that I've heard so far.

John Cale is never overlooked by a discerning section. It is where he wants to be. From Velvet Underground and Lou Reed why would John Cale be anywhere other except where he is today. He is and was exceptional. a chart success was never on his radar. Listen to Golda Meyer.

[Lyrics John Cale - Dying on the Vine]
I've been chasing ghosts and I don't like it
I wish someone would show me where to draw the line
I'd lay down my sword if you would take it
And tell everyone back home I'm doing fine
I was with you down in Acapulco
    Trading clothing for some wine
Smelling like an old adobe woman
Or a William Burroughs playing for lost time
I was thinking about my mother
I was thinking about what's mine
I was living my life like a Hollywood
But I was dying on the vine
Who could sleep through all that noisy chatter
The troops, the celebrations in the sun
The authorities say my papers are all in order
And if I wasn't such a coward I would run
I'll see you me when all the shooting's over
Meet me on the other side of town
Yes, you can bring all your friends along for protection
It's always nice to have them hanging around
I was thinking about my mother
I was thinking about what's mine
I was living my life like a Hollywood
But I was dying, dying on the vine
