He paces it so well. The run from the dissonant end of the solo, to the a capaella last verse to the final climax is perfect. He even made the bum note he sang in the first chorus seem like it belonged :) That's what I call feel!
Just randomly wandered into this. I'd never heard of John Cale really, before this. I have to say INCREDIBLE! He takes something pop and inconsequential and makes it into poetry and performance art. Thanks for posting this!
well you did find him--not just a great performer but incredible producer too--velvet underground, nico, and many others. Slow dazzle is a great record.
Still gives me a chill, more than 25 years after I first heard Cale's version of this. Ironically, I started listening to him because I was confusing him with J.J. Cale
Yes he did. In 1992 he released Fragments Of A Rainy Season, a solo concert in Bruxelles. It´s also avaliable as dvd. Hallelujah posted by dekkersj is from that gig.
@OropherThranduil Okay. You make a good point about Elvis' influence on music and musicians. I didn't mean to offend... I agree with your assessment of the Jonas Brothers and would add, "...or that Justin Bieber can sing" Have a good day and keep on rockin' ;-)
For me Reed is the man not Cale, that being said would the VU be so great without him, not at all. And as a separate artist- oh, my- this is just one example of his singular, serious artistic intent. Hell, of an artist.
Cale is classically trained, multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger, etc well worth listening. Consummate artist.

This is interpreted as the song was always intended to be played.

He plays it the way it was supposed to be played.

I wonder why he has never released a cd of a solo-performance (afaik)
