the song with the most beautiful, most memorable melody on the album. as soon as cale comes in singing harmony it's sheer heaven. "fly me to the moon.... "

The pain of poverty hurts, and lou and John express how Andy felt. I hear my story in this song, I just relate.

This was Lou in training for the fantastic Magic and Loss which is another great example of him writing about subject matters that other performers shy away from, or at the least will only touch on in passing. Lou Reed takes the whole theme of Warhol's life good and bad and examines the emotional aspects of everyone involved not just glossed over in a few lines in one song, and nobody else does that. Magic and Loss is another case of putting his and the other people's feelings and thoughts into really beautiful songs that aren't all do'wah-diddy bullshit and that is why you get emotional listening to them because they are real and honest and he has a brilliant way of making songs with no relevance to you have you feel like you are involved in the story he is relating to you....fuckin geniuses, because John has that same honesty otherwise he wouldn't have worked with Lou on this project, and although he is very humble in the liner notes on the record, it's far from the being a Lou Reed record with guest appearance by John Cale. Excellent

It's called collaboration! The songs are credited either to Reed or to Cale, on which they would sing lead vocals.

@dukeleopard . silly. this vidéo has been shot late 80's. in a MTV era, they are doing the opposite thing of what other artist were doing : a lipsynch version of their album. It's live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and this was showned LIVE on french TV on a saturday night............. can you believe it? I was watching!!!!! and it was a shock
i bet none of the songs on this album was aired on american TV. even in their LP studio version. period!!!!

I still have the CD from when it came out. It must have been ahead of its time because when I load it on the computer a digitized picture of the album cover comes up. There's something compelling about this album, it gets a spin in my car's player every so often.

For a song about vampire murder group systemology, and how one may appoint others to oversee such at one's behest in the course of events, this is remarkably poetic of its expression, un grand témoignage de la musique et l'art des Msrs.Reed et Cale.

    LYRICS
    Please
Come over to 81st street I'm in the apartment above the bar
You know can't miss it, it's across from this subway
and the tacky store with the mylar scarves
My skin's as pale as the outdoors moon
My hair's silver like a Tiffany watch
I like lots of people around me but don't kiss hello
    and please don't touch
It's a Czechoslovakian custom my mother passed on to me
The way to make friends Andy is invite them up for tea
    Open house, open house
I've got a lot of cats, here's my favourite
    she's a lady called Sam
I made a paper doll of her - you can have it
That's what I did when I had St. Vitus dance
It's a Czechoslovakian custom my mother passed on to me
Give people little presents so they'll remember me
    Open house, open house
Someone bring the vegetables, someone please bring heat
My mother showed up yesterday, we need something to eat
I think I got a job today they want me to draw shoes
The ones I drew were old and used
They told me to draw something new
    Open house, open house
Fly me to the moon, fly me to a star
But there are no stars in the New York sky
    They're all on the ground
You scared yourself with music, I scared myself with paint
I drew 550 different shoes today
    It almost made me faint
    Open house, open house

When I listened to this song some 20 years ago, I did not understand the lyrics. I had not enough understanding of the english langage, and I was learning Italian at that moment. Thanx for the translation. I understand now that these lyrics are better than the seventies' daddy cool by Boney M. Do you know this last group ? Es ist ein deutsch Gruppe.

As depressing as anything on Berlin (especially sonically) as it details the attempted assassination of Andy Warhol or at least the conditions (Open house) that led to that event. And yes Loui and DJKew,brilliant.

    excuse moi, mais je crois...
    sorry, I'm not french but...
open house is for sure not 'ouvre ta maison' en francais,
that would mean open your house, that's not the right translation,
correct it, before ppl think that's correct french

@gillesnewwave hmmm.... don't understand your point gillesnewwave... it's a video of a performance that is distinctly inferior to the studio performance. Prefer to listen to the album. The visuals of the video are utterly uninteresting too. Period. Love you though. Please, get a life :)
