- I've been chasing ghosts and I don't like it
I wish someone would show me where to draw the line
I'd lay down my sword if you would take it
And tell everyone back home I'm doing fine
I was with you down in Acapulco
Trading clothing for some wine
Smelling like an old adobe woman
Or a William Burroughs playing for lost time
I was thinking about my mother
I was thinking about what's mine
I was living my life like a Hollywood
But I was dying on the vine
Who could sleep through all that noisy chatter
The troops, the celebrations in the sun
The authorities say my papers are all in order
And if I wasn't such a coward I would run
I'll see you me when all the shooting's over
Meet me on the other side of town
Yes, you can bring all your friends along for protection
It's always nice to have them hanging around
I was thinking about my mother
I was thinking about what's mine
I was living my life like a Hollywood
But I was dying, dying on the vine
John Cale. Endlessly fascinating and so talented.
My favorite version... Simple but brilliant!!

Wow. What a musican! The best.
Great version on Old Grey Whistle Test. This is a special song.
The best version of a great song

you and i and and a few thousand others realise that. was just saying he deserves wider recognition.
Thank you very much ! love it !! the paintings are great too !
The best song in the world for me right now
brilliant, genius
Impressive writing.
Yes, it's on "Fragments Of A Rainy Season". IMO his best album. Just him and the piano (or guitar on some songs).
And if I wasn't such a coward, I would run.
I was living my life, like a hollywood, but I was dying, dying on the vine.
I was with you ...down in Acapulco
this song will be playin in my funeral
Thanks for the post & for including the lyrics. I've been a John Cale fan since the 1980s and I met him and spoke to him about a year ago in London! I think this is one of his best songs, and being a John Cale song, one of the best songs ever, for me. You've done a great job (mind you, I cannot recognize him in the school photo; which one is Cale?)
how in tarnation is this guy not famous?!
Tarnation (2003), that's a great film
Hard to categorise - and he changes styles often. Also the screaming, and paranoid themes probably put people off. You have to think like him to some extent to get it, I think
sorry from the now rare live album , "fragments of a rainy season" my favourite song. and a very very good album.
he did a fantastic version of this on some dutch program I've been trying to track down. I don't think it was in english. oddly enough.
later with jools holland maybe? its british but im also looking for another versin, too
he should be up there with dylan and cohen and yes, reed
yes, "wanted dead or alive"
it's from now rare live album. fragments of a rainy season.
Meet me when all the shooting's over,
Dude's swung VU cred for 50 years. Ain't his fault if you don't know.
@arjunholmie because tarnation is just a wierd place and nobody wants to hang around in there! he is, however, famous in the UK and atleast where im at in the US
pic at 2:34 taken by the police? XD
John is sooo amazing! just have to love his music
I still am
homer would say excellent!
HE IS
Looking for a Piano sheet of this song any ideas ?
If you can play the piano, then you don't need a sheet of this song. It's just chords hammered with a rhythmic pattern for the most part.
I hate to inform you, he is.
tell every one wicker bill is fine
brilliant*why be negative?SOME PPL ENJOY all: Reed,rip!Ayers,Cale,
Eno Ferry,Nico*together &/or solo*ego aside?!
hope you don't talk the way you write ;)
It must have really pissed off Lou Reed that John had the better voice and the better musical ability. I don't know. I might be wrong. Maybe there was no rivalry there. It just seems like Lou always had a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Probably had nothing to do with Cale though.
+123ubuntu666 > It must have really pissed off Lou Reed that John had the better voice and the better musical ability.
Just as much as it pissed John Cale that nonetheless Lou Reed could write more perfect songs -- like Pale Blue Eyes or Candy Says or Perfect Day or Walk on the Wild Side, or Dirty Boulevard, etc.... If we had a single album with all of Lou's best work and all of Cale's best work, Lou's will be unarguably more timeless and classy songs -- despite the fact that Cale had a better voice and was a better musician. If voice reach and core playing skills mattered alone, then someone like Harry Connick Jr. would be better than either of them...
John Cale is a very complicated person, and his relationships have always been just as complicated.
@@foljs5858 That's your personal opinion. Although I discovered Reed a little earlier than Caie via The Velvets, Reed's songs and music quite soon bored me. Cale's songs however got the more interesting the more you listened to them, releasing some hidden melodies, rhythmic patterns or distant voices. So I'd set up Ghost Story, Hanky Panky Nohow, Barracuda, The Sleeper or Close Watch against your suggested Reed songs. Taste is always debatable and a personal matter. Just sayin'.
Cales better song
Coldplay copy?
this was released 11 years before coldplay formed
