The 918 Spyder truly is a once in a lifetime car. I worked at a dealership when this was being developed and I got to see internal info releases that basically saw it gain a significant amount (like hundreds) of HP as specs from the P1 and La Ferrari were released to the public. Porsche spent most of the development time on this car getting the programming right. The hardware was nailed down pretty early in the development phase. Getting the hybrid system to work with the engine seamlessly and let the car do all the ridiculous things it is able to do is truly a masterwork of engineering (cue the video of Chris Harris DRIFTING the 918 Spyder like an S14) and proves that Porsche engineers are literally the best in the whole automotive world. The tech in this car is about 10-15 years ahead of its time. It may not be the prettiest of the Holy Trinity but it is a beautiful car inside and out.

When the Holy Trinity of hypercars 1st debuted, the 918 seemed the most pedestrian when it came to looks and everyday usability. The design has aged well, and I actually like it more now, although it would be a tough choice among all 3. They really need to channel more 918 pizzazz into the next Boxter/Cayman.
Best Throttle House video EVER! The car journalism, story telling, authentic human emotions, filming and editing (especially the immediate editing cuts between James screaming in pleasure and cut to Thomas all relaxed questioning what's the big deal with this car) - BRILLIANT! Thanks for your amazing videos guys!!
The laferrari may have more status quo, the p1 may have more power, but the 918 has been my crush from day 1. The silver color on the slipstream design is my favorite thing about this machine. I wish I had two of them!
The Engine itself is a masterpiece. The LMP2 RS Spyder Heart used in a road car is mega. And Fun fact. The 963 engine is based on the 918/RS Spyder engine as well.
I work as a car hauler and one day I was loading cars in the port of san diego, ca. There was a 918 spyder all the way in the back waiting to be shipped and I had the chance to look at the car up close and let me tell you it leaves an impression on you that I cannot explain. The car looked so powerful and majestic. I can still remember looking at my own reflection on the brake discs. Just a wonderful piece of engineering.
The LFA, the Ford GT (that tried to kill James) and now the 918 Spyder. You guys are reviewing all the cars I grew up loving and I love that for y'all. You guys are doing great work man 👏🏿 👏🏿
You guys are so dialed in and living the dream! Really felt this one. Thanks for putting us as close to being the driver’s seat as most of us will ever get.
I rank this channel as close as top gear .. best channel . Now a days car reviews has gotten so technical and numbers based. No one says how the real enthusiast experience is like. And Thomas and James looks like they genuinely enjoy cars rather than others who are just there for "work". Love you guys
I have never seen James get on the throttle so much before! He really got hooked on that 918. 😅 5:46 Haaaaa! 🤣 If it wasn't raining right now, I'd get on my Hayabusa and go for a little ride. I got a craving for adrenaline now!
This is the first car review that I've jumped up and cheered for! Endless torque is never associated with high-revving small displacement NA engines so it's amazing to witness how well Porsche executed this torque-filling hyper hybrid. James' hand->throttle gestures nicely illustrate how immediate this car responds... amazing!
Being in sheer shock from just the acceleration, not the sound or sharpness or anything as such, is exactly how I felt hopping on my first Hyper Bike. The sensation of pulling in every gear as hard as first effortlessly is an unexplainable sensation
This might be some of your best work. I'm always amazed how you continue to develop funny opening skits (this one was one of my favorites), and the review is concise without being lengthy or reptetive. Add to that the marvelous production quality and you guys seriously have some top-gear level content. Well done.
This is the reward for your hours of effort, diligence and quality of content creation. Us mere mortal men have no chance of waking up to drive a hyper super car such as the Porsche 918 Spyder and to truly experience the marvel and wonder of what Porsche has created. Thank you for sharing (even if in this flat, digital medium) this experience with us!
Guys, you have done it again. Like in the epic LFA review it is about feelings. The car is of course spectacular but for us, the viewers, the difference is how you are able to channel your experience even when you are so overwhelmed that you cannot speak. You transfer your feelings from these moments into my living room, letting me take part of this breathtaking experience. An experience that I would never have the opportunity to have myself. Beautiful work, thank you so much. 🙏
There's something so exhilarating about seeing Thomas and James behind the wheel of the Porsche 918 Spyder, arguably the best car ever made. Especially James' reaction to its launch. Pure bliss.
I was 8 when the three hybrid supercars arrived and I immediately fell in love with the Porsche 918. It's the most sophisticated and subdued of the 3 but also the most elegant and timeless one. That doesn't mean that the P1 and LF aren't great in their own right.
Thanks for this video guys. The 918 has been one of my dream cars ever since I laid my eyes on it when it was launched. I was in tears throughout the driving bit of this video as it really gave away just how exhilarating and special the car is. One of the best videos ever!
This is one of the best car reviews I’ve ever seen. For all the reasons everyone else has stated. This car is one of the goats for me but you guys actually conveyed beyond b roll what it feels like to drive it. The excitement and exhilaration made it through my headphones. Thank you.
You guys made me cry again. First, Thomas' reaction in the LFA video, and now James' when he first sends it behind the wheel of the 918. Keep em coming, boys.
Fun fact, the engine in the 918 Spyder is now used in the 963 LeMans Hypercar: "In late 2020, Stefan Moser, as the head engineer responsible for the Porsche 963 powertrain, and his 18-strong team opted for the 4.6-litre engine from the Porsche 918 Spyder."
Don’t remember these guys to be speechless about a car, regardless of how good it is.. the 918 must be out of this world.. what an amazing video, I could feel their excitement when driving.. this is legendary.. thanks for your work.. this is better than gold..
It’s so much fun to watch two of the most down to earth and honest people review such an amazing car, such genuine and fun reactions! Congrats to the whole team on the journey to this point and the excellence of the videos!
This is THE Dream car for a lot of car enthusiast, myself included. Though its old, I can't help but re-watch old reviews of it. Thanks for creating this video, it means a lot to all of us that can't afford to see it in person.
The production quality of these videos is insane. Whenever I want to watch one, I make sure it's at 4k and the sound is at full volume. Keep up the good work!
I love the music starting right when James switches to sport mode, and the launch control engine sound was incredible. From those two brief moments you instantly knew this was going to be something else, and then his reaction was goddamn hilarious
This is a refreshing car review. I do love hearing about the tech, engineering, and performance in car reviews but this was a treat to see just raw reaction and emotion. Same vibes from the LFA video. Like what Thomas said, it doesn’t matter what you see in the cockpit, we just want to drive it. Thank you TH for making my weekend! Now can we please split this up between 1000 people?
I have never ever in my life liked the designs of Porsches, they have always reminded my of just sporty VW Bugs... but this one has become my favorite looking car of all time. It just looks so freaking good. The front end is perfection and the rear is exotic. I wish I could drive one.
He has a fit about the sheer speed of the 918… Then he does it again. 👍 haven’t seen him this excited and animated since he reviewed the LFA. Different cars but the same reaction… basically.
Oof!! What an episode!! Thank you, guys! Your excitement is infectious, is an understatement!😃 Let’s say you've taken us viewers along with you for a ride of a lifetime! Look fwd to more adventure episodes!
Watching two relatively jaded car reviewers be turned nearly speechless by the performance of a car is such a fun thing to watch. Same with Top Gear when they reviewed the trio - they were all just shocked be the performance gap that had been created.
Opening with James getting lost for words as hes carried away with the experience made my hair on my neck stand up. Also, to me, a hypercar is the class of car where you spare no expense. You throw everything at it that there is. Magnisium instead of aluminium. Its when the experience and performance trumfs any rationality or common sense. Koeningsegg is a great example of what I mean.
I’ve watched this many times because I love reliving the joy these guys found in this incredible machine. Too many car reviewers have to feel like the “smartest guy in the room” by discussing the tiniest nits to prove how much they know about cars. This review turns that on its head and just celebrates this car for its awesomeness. We need to get you guys into another hypercar - soon!
Several years ago I remember using these guys review and many others to make a decision on a 4runner and now I'm watching them drive dream cars and I love it.
When these cars were released I was super excited to see the future of 'performance' hybrids but we haven't really seen ones that have been this crazy or well designed. So far its been a balance between sacrificing power for practicality but I always hold out hope that we hit the levels of performance hybrids that these cars pioneered. The 918 holds a very special place in my heart, it's toppled my long desire for a Carrera GT, it's destroyed my Italian Supercar wishes, that 918 Spyder is seriously one of the greats and to remember that its only from 2015 terrifies me in the best way possible. Thank you Throttle House for reviewing it and showing the true feeling behind this Titan of a car!
@@chingasichone1056 reasonable hybrids at least. Not many people are going out and buying an SF90. The SF90 however is indeed a hefty power train and is insane by its own standard! I suppose I should’ve specified that I wish mid-range cars like 30-60k would abuse performance hybrids and not be as mild as they are sometimes lol
I’ve always loved cars. This channel has brought my passion to another level. I don’t have the means to satisfy this passion but I’m doing what I can. It started with a Golf R which I just traded in for an Audi RS 3. Thanks Throttle House! Keep up the amazing work.
I was always surprised how little emphasis was put on the 918's V8 I'm glad Thomas mentioned it. I think because the Laf(errari for those perplexed by the term Laf) has it's V12 then the 918's 'defining thing' was the all wheel drive capability & everyone forgot about the V8 in this.
That generation of hypercar felt like such a pinnacle of engineering, like we reached that point of the bleeding edge of what an ICE can do and we've just sort of gotten stuck since. Absolutely timeless
The design with this and the Carrera GT are so nice. Especially since everything they make has such a similar design theme, whereas this has it’s own flavors.
This car has always been #1 on my dream car list, and I was NOT expecting to see a review of it from my favorite channel. Everything from the sound, the motors, the engineering, it's the perfect car imo. This car is the reason I want a hybrid NSX, since I feel like it shares a similar philosophy and a 918 is a bit out of reach, haha.
When I was 14 in 2015, there was a 918 Weissach at our Porsche dealership, I was lucky enough to sit in and I remember the seating position just being perfect, even at 13, I knew this was how "race drivers" sat, and the centre console is beautiful. Maybe one day I will get the chance.
You guys have nailed car content on youtube, i've been binge watching your whole channel for the last week or so. The format you have works so well with the humour as well as the genuine comments on the car. and congrats to getting to review this car, must have been really special.
My wife has a Lotus Evora and I a Lotus Elise Turbo and we can't imagine a Porsche ever being a better driving experience. However, after watching this and your reactions, we're not so certain anymore.
The excitement is undeniably infectious. Watching this made my heart race and put a smile on my face that just wouldn't go away. What a car. What a beautifully honest and unpretentious review.
I love how much you guys showcased the sound of this beast. I feel like this is so underrated for its sound, no one talks about how damn good that V8 sounds…
This guy talks such an annoying bullshit about the 918 Spyder engine sound, like "it doesn't sound good, but it sounds so evil and raw blah blah, that it sounds good again...." What a clown! Everybody can hear very clearly the amazing sound of this 4.6 N/A engine. It is a totally unique engine sound, because it was meant for a Porsche racecar. Unlike the quite annoying McLaren P1 V8 turbo sound, which sounds like any other McLaren 3.8 liter V8 turbo crap engine sound of their "1749 different" McLaren road car models.
The first one I saw on the road was on a twisty mountain highway while riding my tuned Ducati Superbike. Although I couldn't get the guy to show me what it could do, it was the first time I realized that this was a road legal production car that could outperform my bike in any way, despite weighing over six times as much. Absolutely mind bending.
I was smiling and laughing from excitement just from watching the video, I can see Tom and James had sooo much fun doing this review! Keep up the good work and never change guys
This was the first super/hypercar I’ve ever seen in person. The New Orleans dealership had 2 and they even started 1 for us. Honestly scared the crap out of me on cold start.
Love waking up on a Sunday to this content for the morning coffee! Keep killing it guys. Also just picked up a new SL63 AMG. Hope you guys review one soon!
All three manufacturers, Porsche, Ferrari and McLaren did an excellent job of designing their hypercars, they still LOOK INCREDIBLE almost 10 years later!
The way this looks after soo many years makes me understand Porsche's simplistic design style. It simply stands the test of time effortlessly
Well put. It's so true too!
It looks really good. but it's not as pretty as a laferrari imho. However Porsche's design ages really well, as you pointed out.

The Engine itself is a masterpiece. The LMP2 RS Spyder Heart used in a road car is mega. And Fun fact. The 963 engine is based on the 918/RS Spyder engine as well.
No, no, completely different layout, capacity... no
I work as a car hauler and one day I was loading cars in the port of san diego, ca.

This car is as epic as it gets.
5:46 Haaaaa! 🤣 If it wasn't raining right now, I'd get on my Hayabusa and go for a little ride. I got a craving for adrenaline now!
"Oh my f*ck! Oh my f*ck" 😂that's...who even says that?
This is the first car review that I've jumped up and cheered for! Endless torque is never associated with high-revving small displacement NA engines so it's amazing to witness how well Porsche executed this torque-filling hyper hybrid. James' hand->throttle gestures nicely illustrate how immediate this car responds... amazing!

@@Schervin for NA hypercar it is
@@say_wut yep. It also has 590bhp and 557PP.
@@say_wut It's not that big, but it isn't small, AMG One engine is small
Being in sheer shock from just the acceleration, not the sound or sharpness or anything as such, is exactly how I felt hopping on my first Hyper Bike. The sensation of pulling in every gear as hard as first effortlessly is an unexplainable sensation
I totally agree, that very thing rescrambled my brain to completely redefine every past sensation of acceleration and motion
Not sure your definition of hyper bike (CBR1000R is what I rode, not hyper but very fast liter bike) but I completely agree.
@Todd Stephens 2008 Zx-14 is what I'm referring to lol
This might be some of your best work. I'm always amazed how you continue to develop funny opening skits (this one was one of my favorites), and the review is concise without being lengthy or reptetive. Add to that the marvelous production quality and you guys seriously have some top-gear level content. Well done.
I'd like to think they're definitely doing better than Top Gear right now. Their content is always as captivating as it gets.

Still my all-time favorite hypercar. I absolutely lusted after the 918 when it debuted and I'm even more impressed now. It's a masterpiece.
"Baka monoga, doitsu no kagaku wa seika ichi!!!"
A quote that embodies this car
You guys have a way to convey the car feel over the video that the original top used to have. Love it
Guys, you have done it again. 🙏
Well Said
I used to think Porsches weren't very cool but ones released in the 2000's still look up to date today. They are just SO beautiful.
I loved all three but without a doubt it’s the 918 that I desire the most.
And now I feel old.
Haha I also feel old. I remember well the previous trinity coming out: Enzo, Carrera GT & SLR McLaren.

Thank you.

Fun fact, the engine in the 918 Spyder is now used in the 963 LeMans Hypercar:
"In late 2020, Stefan Moser, as the head engineer responsible for the Porsche 963 powertrain, and his 18-strong team opted for the 4.6-litre engine from the Porsche 918 Spyder."
Yep, they took it and placed two turbos on it in to turn it into a “Hot Vee”.
I cannot WAIT until someone loans you guys a P1 or La Ferrari to review. This was awesome
Those who cherish 2000 era exotic cars will always appreciate the 918. Bucket list experience.
What a car! I can't believe that this is already 10 years old. Looks and sounds perfect and if I had a spare 2 million it would be in my garage.
This car is as amazing as even the F40 1992.
This is THE Dream car for a lot of car enthusiast, myself included. Though its old, I can't help but re-watch old reviews of it. Thanks for creating this video, it means a lot to all of us that can't afford to see it in person.
Feel you man !
James’s segment on throttle response put such a big smile on my face. It was so on point that you can really feel what he was feeling.
I love getting to watch you guys drive these special cars. It feels like watching your friends succeed chasing their dreams!
The new Corvette might be the first hybrid supercar to approach the promise of trickle down from these cars. We shall see!
Man have you not seen the SF90 ? Hybrid super car greatness right there
@@chingasichone1056 reasonable hybrids at least.

I can the excitement through the screen. Makes me a proud Porsche 981 owner even though I’m nowhere near the 918. Somehow.
That generation of hypercar felt like such a pinnacle of engineering, like we reached that point of the bleeding edge of what an ICE can do and we've just sort of gotten stuck since. Absolutely timeless
The pinnacle of ICE is indeed hybridization.
The design with this and the Carrera GT are so nice. Especially since everything they make has such a similar design theme, whereas this has it’s own flavors.
Probably the best episode you've ever released. This was amazing, congrats guys.
How far we've come..
You guys deserve every bit of this🔥
This car has always been #1 on my dream car list, and I was NOT expecting to see a review of it from my favorite channel.
This and the Lexus LFA are my dream cars
