This video reiterates how great of a car the Viper is/was. The Gen 5 Viper platform came out 10 years ago. It has 3 pedals, fixed aero and still is only 1 second off the time of this incredible GT3RS. WOW!
I think that this “track” that they have is not at all what the GT3 was designed for. Put both on the NBR and the new GT3 RS has a 10 second gap on the viper. And I mean this literally. 7:01 for the fiber and 6:49 for the GT3 RS.

Even with the complications the team faced and only have one real working car they still managed a staggering 7:01 time. It’s a legend for affordability and getting the most out of your cash. But my point is that this short circuit, which is mostly flat is just not at all what the GT3 RS was designed for. The aero and suspension are designed for longer more complicated tracks with changes in altitude. Just because you like something doesn’t mean that I don’t when I point out that this isn’t a great “track” for testing both cars capabilities. I've been following you guys since before 1 mill subs and just wanted to thank you both (and the team behind the scenes) for filling the Top Gear shaped void in my heart. I don't think I'd do any justice to both you and TG Trio by insinuating that you're both the same but you show both rare and everyday cars by adding great content and humour that doesn't take away from the point of the video. Not to mention y'all totally got Margot for that Purosangue video. Here's to 10 million more deserved subs.
One of the great joys in those games, really. I'll never get to drive one of these, but I would happily spend hours getting it set perfectly for my driving style if I could.
@ertugrulbae46 Thomas does a decent job of explaining how the diff and suspension work in plain English. Raising the strength of the diff on the acceleration side causes the rear end to jump out more and oversteer or slide coming out of corners, like the clip where he refers to the BMW as a hooligan (best visual I can think of from this video). As for spring rates on the suspension, if they're set too high, you get a much stiffer suspension and less grip on rough or bumpy surfaces but it reduces body roll and lets you keep a lower center of gravity. Lower spring rates give you more roll and a softer feel, but more grip on a bumpy surface since it keeps better contact with the road. Probably not the best job explaining those things, but hopefully it makes a bit more sense. In terms of Gran Turismo: higher spring rate is good for smooth racetracks, and lower is better for Sarthe or Nurburgring since those tracks are so uneven they can throw your car around.
@@Shiny_Dragonite Perfect explanation on the spring rate part! It’s no wonder the 911 became so popular with Dentists and Surgeons in the 80s, it’s like wielding a precision scalpel! Totally dialed in and focused.
Hah. Big corporate motoring companies are more interested in reducing cylinder count, banning combustion (in the engine, not on the grid), installing remote kill switches (politically driven punishments), and taking away individual control of transport. That all takes a lot of time and resource that could otherwise be spent on designing nice sports cars that do things faster, harder, sharper.

In the 992 generation the engine moved quite a bit forward (17 cm) - it is not really behind the axle anymore. The new chassis is called MMB (mid-engine kit).

There's not a lot of onboards that really give off the sense of speed in real life, but damn this car is something else because that looked ridiculously sharp in the corners, wow
I watched one at VIR the other day and it looked like cheap CGI or a cartoon or something. Nevermind the forward speed, it’s lateral speed was not trivial.
Hopefully you guys can get your hands on the new 911 S/T. It obviously won't beat this monster on a track, but should be a perfect road car. Cheers to another fantastic episode!
Insane lap time. Insane car. Any car that revs to 9k and has DRS is an absolute legend. Normally, I would say "no manual, no dice", but this is a bona fide track weapon that needs the PDK's lightning fast shifts that allow the driver to focus 100% on banging off fast laps!
A lap time is cool but be honest majority of owners don’t have the skill to get those times anyway. A manual option would have been amazing and is quintessential for a gt3rs in my eyes.
@@johncena-hq1ti hey, I'm all for a manual. All my sports cars are manual but in this case, I think if an individual wants the manual experience and doesn't care about lap times, just go buy the GT3. The RS is a track focused model, which is more geared toward the enthusiast who wants to extract the fastest lap times possible(for their skill level) so the PDK is the proper application. I mean, the 991 RS was PDK only so this should come as no surprise.
@@STORM3SHADOW nah should’ve still been an option. Manual gt3rs’ are icons. Porsche is an absolutely insane company. I've seen Mono's in the wild passing ferrari's, lambo's, whatver it is you name it. And this thing waffle stomped that mono's lap time. insanity.

I absolutely love Porsche 992s. I can’t remember the last time I loved a car this much that wasn’t from 80s or 90s. The GT3 RS is a bit much for my taste since I prefer the Touring Package, but this is still pretty cool in every way. Also, after going to multiple dealers in person and watching videos extensively on different versions of the 992 from actual owners (one having both the regular GT3 with manual and Touring with the PDK), they said the same about the manual. They almost say it begrudgingly or under their breath that the PDK system is better than the manual, but I know that’s a bit sacrilegious to some enthusiasts. Edit: After watching the whole video, I can’t remember if they said it, but you can switch what each of the gauges outside of the speedometer of what they say and do, even switch the position they’re in so that the most important ones are visible. My favorite, even though I would never track it, is the one visual that actually shows the G’s you’re pulling. And you already have the one in the center of the dash for lap times and such. Finally, even if you had the money, I doubt you’d actually find one below 300k, I’ve seen them sell even at 500k. Half a million is just so much, but I guess it’s worth it to some.
@@Ethan-wr2os Maybe that’s why I like it so much. They went away from the long taillight for awhile. And the previous 911 has it but…is just okay to me. The 992s are just so clean and elegant.

After I drove the 911 gt3 in sim switching from a Aston gt3 car I said If I ever ran into some money I’d go straight to Porsche. Never felt such a planted car before still haven’t. Most cars push on the front tires when pushed, Porsches seem to always lose grip on the front and Rear at the same time making a perfectly balanced car.
Utter precision. Porsche really has mastered the art of making a sports car. I wish I could have a 911 992 GTS. Can't decide if I would go manual or PDK. Dual clutches are so good to drive....

Great video again and props to Porsche for creating a beautiful and track winning sports car. I would like to salute the Dodge Viper ACR for holding its position for SIX years after production ended before even a NON manual transmission sports car could win, it held its record with a stick-shift and lower cost…….let that sink in.
Let's also not forget the tires the ACR was on. I'm sure if you slap some slicks or cup2rs on there the time will come down to most likely take first place.
When the new GT3 came out I noted that if the regular GT3 looks and performs like that then the GT3 RS will be nuts. This thing is like a Gundam in car form with the design and knobs and customizable settings, etc. Porsche has done it again, great video.
I’ve never been a big fan of Porsches because of the close together wheelbase (ie spinouts and unexpected corner spins/death. Further apart wheelbases have less of that) But this car seriously impresses me and makes me a bigger fan of Porsche. Side note: The fastest I’ve ever gone was in a Porsche and I’m still not a huge fan, but I understand what’s going on with the car now
I just love this Channel. I find that it is amazing that the Dodge Viper ACR still holds the record. The very fact that all other cars have so many settings to do this & do that, better tires & electronics & still the Viper holds the record. I'm sure there are better tires for the Viper now & do another test, but don't let the other cars use all this new electronic stuff for aero wing. The Viper wing is fixed so the others must use a fixed wing as well. Shucks, all other cars must be of the year of the Viper of the ACR. Now this pretty much makes for apple to apple comparison. Bring the Viper back for another test with the lastest tires.Lets do it!

Tho it really sucks the Viper got knocked down to #3 im pretty proud of the fact that it lasted so long as the fasted road car on their track especially considering how old the car is now it shows just how great of a machine the Viper is, was probably the best of its time and still at the very top today, deserves all the praise. Especially when the now top 2 cars have special tires and all that imagine if that treatmean was applied to the Viper! Pretty bitter sweet
...I would wager the Viper could either tie the Porsche, or even take it's spot if it was treated to the same tires...and maybe some 'tweaks' of it's own (perhaps these guys did tweak the ACR, but I don't recall them mentioning that they did)...I'm sure the ACR could claw back that second a lap...The Porsche is still pretty sweet, but if I had one, that stupid clicking paddle would have to be silenced...far too gimmicky for a Porsche...I'd expect that from some other cars, just not a Porsche....
@angusandleigh I completely agree! Give the ACR Cup 2 R's, and it easily regains the thrown. It has practically the same amount of downforce, with way more power and TORQUE more importantly. Without question it would be the faster car.
And the fact the ACR Viper was a manual speaks volumes! That plus everything else says to me how much of a marvel the Viper is and that it could easily be #1 if under the same conditions as the BAC and Porche it's insane to think about not many ppl r talking about how godly that is honestly
@megatronusorionpax4900 completely agree!! Really the ZR1 Corvette with manual instead of that slow awkward automatic, cup 2 R's, would probably be right up there as well!

Not to mention all the other wet weather that prevented proper practice runs: "The team looking to set the Nurburgring record with the 2017 Dodge Viper ACR arrived in Germany late last week with plans of spending several days practicing before making an official record run on Monday. Their first few practice sessions were rained on, so while they got some track time, the conditions were far from ideal. When the crew finally got some sunny practice time, both cars ran into rear wheel bearing issues, which sidelined the team until they could get new parts. Once the cars were repaired, the Viper ACR team was prepared to make a record run on Monday, but once again, they were rained out. They did get some practice time on the wet track, but no official record run was made. Fortunately, on Wednesday, the team was finally able to get the cars on a dry track for a proper record run and the results were very good. Dominik Farnbacher laid down a time of 7:03.45 and that is the quickest time ever run by an American car with witnesses at the Nurburgring. Best of all, the team had planned to make one more run today, but unfortunately, after a great start, another odd mechanical issue struck. A communication device required of all cars running the Nurburgring was placed under the dash, somewhere behind the gauge cluster. During Farnbacher’s run - which track officials state was one of the quickest starts they have seen from a production car - a portion of the communication device fell out of the dash, coming to rest behind the pedals. Because of that, Farnbacher lost the brake and the clutch, killing the run and forcing him to limp the car around to the pits….and then it started to rain while they were in the garage area fixing the problem. Farnbacher may have been on pace for a lap time starting with a 6, but due to the mechanical issue and the rain, the team will have to settle for another record lap time as the quickest American production car to ever lap the Nurburgring." dodgeforum.com/articles/2017-viper-acr-sets-new-nurburgring-record-american-production-car/
The Viper ACR is not to be overlooked. To get its great track time on a dated platform with a manual transmission is beyond impressive. Further to that it can be driven hard without spending hours reading a performance bible!
What? no, theres nothing impressive... Its basically just a track car and nothing else. It offers nothing of note. No special engine, no adjustability, no road worthiness, its just a an old car with big tires and wings on it. Thats exactly how race cars are built. You can take any car and do the same to it. Whats special about the porsche is not just the insane grip and lap time. It has character, uniqueness... Boxer engine, high revver, midlle-back placed platform, tech that will take decades to trickle down into the likes of the Viper and so much more. And you dont need to read anything to put all of that to use. It teaches you. You drive it and adapt it to your needs and since no settings configuration actually breaks its function you will never be in the wrong. All those adjustments are for perfecting your laps, if you so desire. And it can do it drastically. The hell you take on thinking you'll have an easier time driving the Viper? In fact it will take a lot more to adapt to the rawness and limited adaptability of the Viper than the Porsche. It has less grip and a much more limited platform overall. And were talking about amateur times here. And the difference is already huge. Get these same cars into proper tracks and put at the wheel a professional driver and the difference would be even bigger.
The fins on the roof are to prevent the hot air from the cooling system at the front to be sucked in by the engine in the back. If you are driving with the windows down you can feel the hot air going around the car.

It's one of my favorite parts of their videos.
that customizability brings me back to the hours spent in gran turismo fine tuning car setups
One of the great joys in those games, really. I'll never get to drive one of these, but I would happily spend hours getting it set perfectly for my driving style if I could.
I've spent ages on that game. Still don't have a damn clue what the suspension stuff does, or the diff...or what the best settings are.
Bro I still have my PS2 memory cards with all my drift spec cars saved lol.

Big corporate motoring companies are more interested in reducing cylinder count, banning combustion (in the engine, not on the grid), installing remote kill switches (politically driven punishments), and taking away individual control of transport.

Comparing a Viper to a Porsche, will probably land you in prison in Germany...and righteously so.
Please don’t put Viper, or anything American for that matter, in the same sentence as Porsche.
4:40 that left hand shifting just put extra 40hp to the car

The fins on the roof are to prevent the hot air from the cooling system at the front to be sucked in by the engine in the back. If you are driving with the windows down you can feel the hot air going around the car.
