I was an electrician for almost 40 years, and wiring big commercial buildings are easier than vehicle wiring.
I chased a short somewhere under the hood of my 1991 250 for months, the battery would drain in about three or four days if I didn't run it.
I had the whole harness cut open and carefully looked at every single wire from point A to point B.
I spent months looking for it, then it just went away. I must have moved something that fixed it.
After it stopped draining I put a new battery in it, and sold it before it came back.

Got ya beat on that FUBAR Rudy Spent 3 days working on an 81 Camaro trying to find a dead short that would drain a good battery overnight. 4 hours into the 3rd day I got fed up, disconnected the battery, started walking away, then had a flash of inspiration. Grabbed the wiring diagrams and tore into it again. Eight hours later I had it figured out but couldn't get any readings on my multimeter That's when I remembered that I had disconnected the battery. That was 18 years ago and my brother is still laughing about it. Disconnected the electric choke, put a manual cable in, no more dead batteries.

Trevor, is the OBD II harness still attached or did it fall victim to weight reduction?
A dead cylinder is easy enough to find with a laser thermometer shot at the spark plug. Now what's causing the dead cylinder is another story. Once you find the dead cylinder, swap a injector and see if the dead cylinder follows the injector relocation. Also a quick ohm test on the plug wires is in order.
Also, unplug the MAF sensor and run the Jeep. A bad MAF will cause a dead cylinder. Plug the valve cover line as it can cause a lean condition.

I would recommend a protective screen wire of 1/4” round stock to protect the radiator from winch cable / fiber line. Sometimes there may be back lash icthere is a mishap with the “line in” winch process.

My guess for what the secret mission is: Matt dropped the word 'golden' when discussing it, so it must involve Ed. Matt has previously stated that only the Banana is small enough for the recovery. My guess is that Matt is going to recover Ed's old Jeep, broken down and stuck up there someplace.

The 4.0 liter inline 6 cylinder that came standard on the Cherokees was a bulletproof engine offering a good amount of torque, especially given the vehicles size and weight. I loved my old Cherokee great vehicle that, despite having issues, was dependable. The two doors especially make great working vehicles, just take the backseat bottom out and fold the back seat back down; lots of space on a vehicle that will get you just about anywhere. With 4-6 tube sands bags strapped in the back they make about the perfect plow vehicles, especially with studded snow tires. While I managed to get the Ram 2500 stuck while plowing I never got the Jeep stuck. The Cherokee with a bigger engine and better transmission would be even better; I always thought it would be nice to go diesel.

I had the same trouble at first with my yellow 05 rubicon after switching to a Golen stroker. Took a while to work the air out of the fuel injection to get a good idle. Then some overheating due to air trapped in the coolant system (my fault) and small, irritating problems with wiring (my fault again). The engine is great though! Once those were worked out, you can really feel the extra horses and torque! 👍👍 (2 thumbs up for Golen racing strokers!)

That "vacuum leak" sound that you hear in the cab is coming from the THOR intake. I have the same one on my XJ, takes a little to get used to but not too long. It's just amplifying the sound of the throttle body. Once the sound deadening is in place, it will be much less noticeable.

  • @wmmst11

Question for the group -- what exactly is a dead hole? Tried googling it and got nothing conclusive. Does it simply mean one of the cylinders is not working?

You got it. A dead hole means one cylinder is not firing. Consider it shop talk for a single cylinder misfire which you're more likely to see in a manual or training.

Having many yrs experience with the Amc/Jeep 4.0 6-inlines, to get the full benefit fan draw, I can't imagine trying to go without a tight fan shroud. With all the engine bay openings, tornado like winds will be creating big back pressure against the radiator, fans work. I missed seeing x-mission coolers on the ck-off list. Matt, thks for the vids, keep the fun going.

If the Jeep is acting like it has a rev limiter around 2500 to 3000 or so rpm, re-visit the camshaft sensor/synchronizer alignment. That can cause the rev limiting. Of course if there's also a single cylinder misfire, fix that, too. A scanner is your friend there.

A shame it seems (universally..) car manufactures have totally forgotten the KISS method. Designing vehicles with high quality parts with a minimum of 'over technology' would be a dream. Amazing those who can DIY it themselves marrying old (tried & true) technology and the new (aftermarket parts) do it better than 'stock' show what is possible. Matt's Morrvair a glowing/extreme example.
