The jeep Cherokee is one of the greatest cars ever produced. I own an 89’ limited 4.0L and it’ll probably get me another 300,000 miles. Such a pleasure to drive, sticks to the road like glue and can make it over almost anything I put infront of it. Love cherokees so much.
It is a fascinating case study of an engine; thanks for taking on this project. For all of the prestige and allure of the American V8, there is not much more-American motor than a Jeep Six-Cylinder
For what they were designed to do, they're wonderful engines. Much like the Chrysler Slant 6, they just run forever without much fuss - and now this particular one has been fortified with vitamins and iron! Very enjoyable as always *Davin* - can't wait to see what you tackle next. - Ed on the Ridge
those 4.0L jeep engines have their roots in the AMC 199 that was first used by Rambler in 1964. obviously certain revisions have been done, but the main architecture is the same. Which is why he was able to use a 258 crank. The Chrysler slant 6, the Ford 300, the Chevy stove bolt, and the AMC 258/jeep 4.0 are all amazingly durable and effective.
@@mindeloman most straight 6 (I6) are super durable. Most over the road Diesel engines are I6. They have 2 more mains than a v8. And more spinning mass to make power.
I guess I'm in the minority. I was head Jeep mechanic at a Chrysler/Jeep dealership back in the late 80's. This model jeep was declared the #1 most repaired vehicle by Consumer reports. They would pull in the shop and I could tell just by listening how much money I was going to make.
Awesome! Reminds me of the much less technical re-build I helped my Dad with on a 1988 Cherokee when I was 8 years old. Priceless memory and thank you for the reminder!
Best engine rebuild video I've seen for a4.0L to 4.6L overhaul. I just picked up a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport that needs some work. Ordered up so many new parts, but this, this video makes me want to go all in. Great job looks and sounds absolutely amazing!
There is something very special about the sound of a straight six. Really enjoy the content that David puts out, like the honest way he presents. And his obvious knowledge of what he does.
The attention to detail is from another planet. The shots of the masking tape getting unwrapped was mental. I was snobing the project cause it's not a European car but as soon as i saw the 6pot i knew i had to watch the whole series. Congratulations!
4:55, was expecting roller rockers. This video made me miss my 98' XJ Sport. The engine with simple oil changes would have lasted forever if the body didn't rust apart. RIP Black Thunder. Screenplay and chill tune made this a very fun watch even with the heartbreak.

Not sure if you’re interested but a series where you take newer vehicles, break them down and discover, discuss and correct poor engineering oversights, would be unbelievably valuable. Add some much needed mods and some flair to keep it interesting would be cool too. Anyhow thanks for your time and I hope this message reaches the minds that make it all happen. This was and is one of my favorite engines I've ever dealt with. Easy to work with. Few failure points. Reliable to a fault. With 40 years of service the parts availability keeps them affordable to work with.
The engine originally dates back to the 60's when it powered an AMC Rambler. It's also powered IH farm equipment, full size J-10 pickups, cars, trucks Jeeps ect. My 1992 Jeep YJ Sahara is still virtually showroom condition, has never seen snow, salt or even rain. I've never sunk it in mud and water. I only use it in deserts and mountains around Death Valley and it's never left to bake in the sun. The original paint (matte finish sage green) is still like new and it's fast becoming a collector.
@@jeepmanxj I found it covered with 20 years of dust, old newspapers and magazines in the far back of a big garage. Had bad gas so it wouldn't start.
