Restoring a TIRED Mini Cooper S 1275cc Engine - Will it Run? | Redline Rebuild Time-lapse

  • We may not be Michael Caine zipping through Turin, but we got plenty of thrills rebuilding this classic Austin Mini Cooper S. This little 1275cc engine from 1965 gave us our fair share of headaches as we worked through our restoration, but for Davin, that's just par for the course when you're constantly working on cars you aren't completely familiar with. And, at the end of the day, it's all worth it when you hear turn over and run at the end of a rebuild.

I'm sad knowing that this technology is going to become lost as everyone switches over to electric cars. For 3-5 generations, this has been something us like minded individuals have been into.

at this point i'm kinda glad to be born in a third world country, electric cars would be commonplace in something like 1 or 2 generation after me bcs the infrastructure is not that developed yet so we still have a few decades to enjoy petrol cars

Electrikity cars are for the rich,,, even the hybrids are not for the poor. And while they go ok range is an issue. And tow??? Naah does not happen. So too take the boat to the river or sea, the caravan on holidays, tow your special interst vehicle or racecar they are totally useless. Maybe a 100k to a battery. That takes hours to charge!
Ditto for tens of thousands of trucks small to large
Then all the smog from the electricity grid, fugly windmills and fugly rooves with all the disposal dramas as they wear out.
Plus classic car owners are still going to drive them. Any Govt trying to ban petrol sales at a reasonable price will end up in huge trouble. As has happened in Eastern Europe very recently.
As a car dealer I simply will refuse these expensive very high maintenance toys. Tesla seems to have the suckers however with used cars that are not really good. And I am far from unusual. Dont need the inevitable warranty claims.

I love the channel and I love the effort that's done. Obviously, the time involved is legitimate and the work is authentic; what bothers me any more with "reality" TV is knowing that none of it's real and I always question whether of these "barn finds" are actually found in a barn, or just bought and placed there..... Especially the actual "barn find" shows.... TV magic in my opinion.

Not bad engineering for 1959 when the Mini first came out as an 850cc runabout. A genuine 1965 1275 Cooper S is worth meg money these days. Especially after a very well done engine and gearbox rebuild like this.
    A certain 'Hagerty' suggest these:
    #1 Concourse $74,000
#2 Excellent $52,800 (as this one is)
    #3 Good $32,900
    #4 Fair $21,800

The first car I ever drove was a car that my father purchased for $600 it was a 1966 Austin Mini-Moke and he bought it in 1967. Much like this Cooper it had a transverse mounted engine with the radiator facing the driver side but the engine looks identical to mine except mine only had one carburetor.
I used to run from our bus stop across the golf course home so that I could ask my father permission to drive down the quarter mile driveway to pick up my two brothers.
I was 10 years old. My father gave me that car when I was 25. It was my second car but I loved it.
I watched you rebuild this engine with great interest I don't know what cc it is mine was 850 cc
I was waiting to see what kind of oil you put in the carburetor's reservoir.
Thank you for the excellent video coverage of your excellent work.

This particular example appeared to be in remarkably good condition before the build, and as such looks very much like it had been restored before. No rust on the body, wheels, and running gear for British Leyland? No way. This car would have holes everywhere. You could see the road through the footwell of my mate's Mini in the 70's....

Had a bud had a cooper s 1275 had twin 2 barrel 40mm sidedraft Webers on it. He ran it on Avgas, sounded like a tubine when he wound it up! BRG with 10 inch 12 slot chromies on it. Pretty litlle car.

I used to get the dizzy drive upside down 50% of the time too ... (the slot is only fractionally off centre and hard to spot...)
