METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES is often derided as little more than a demo. But anyone who's ventured beyond the surface level of this game knows it's more...MUCH more...
But not before now has an account been provided so comprehensively to explain one of the game's biggest mysteries: why it so willfully contradicts itself with anachronisms and apparent time paradoxes.
    ******************
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a third-person stealth action-adventure game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on March 18, 2014. It was later digitally published for the PC (via Steam) on December 18, 2014.
The game is a standalone prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, setting up the game's story while introducing players to both the Fox Engine and the new open-world gameplay structure.
Set in 1975, shortly after the events of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, players take control of legendary operative Snake (also known as Big Boss, leader of the Militaires Sans Frontières) as he infiltrates a clandestine prison camp in Cuba (known as Camp Omega) under control by U.S. Marines (including a mysterious Special Forces unit known as XOF). With radio assistance from Kazuhira Miller and Huey Emmerich, Snake must find and rescue both MSF member Chico and high-value target Paz.

I can do a play through where I want to blow up every single enemy in the base and kill the hostages and my own helicopter and the game won’t punish me for that. For instance I wouldn’t give the phantom pain for my friend to play at my computer because of all the rpg base multiplayer demon points shit and everything. On the other hand I can open up ground zeros and let them do whatever and I know nothings gonna happen. I hoped the phantom pain will have the structure of ground zeros when it comes out but it was open world and not mission select so I got kinda sad.

Kind of unrelated but my personal headcanon for a while has been that the reason David Hayter doesn't voice Big Boss in Ground Zeroes is that Ground Zeroes is a recounting of the event from the perspective of the "memories" implanted onto the medic during his coma. I think this could explain not only the difference in his voice in Ground Zeroes, but some of these other discrepancies as well. It's the medics mind filling in the blanks with things he knows or associates with at some point in the future.

    • @basswolf86

I do like that and I've come to think the same - it does make sense. I know outside of the game David Hayter was a bit upset but for this story to work - and if indeed this is a recount of an event then it makes total sense.

@@Blintedhaa What in the world are you talking about? I thought they were friends before this. I remember seeing a video of Hayter years ago doing a skit specifically for Kojima's birthday.
The link between the Japanese voice actor and Kiefer Sutherland is that in the Japanese dub of 24, The Japanese Voice Actor for Venom is the voice of Jack Bauer, so the two voices are linked in that way between the east and west, and considering the ultimate ruse being played by the narrative, it makes the voice actor change make a lot of sense.
If they had changed the voice only for TPP and not GZ, it would have been far too obvious, so it had to change for both games for it to work.

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.” This quote always makes me think about Camp Omega and Big Boss as a whole. Camp Omega was the “beginning” of this story, while at the same time dawns the metaphorical “end” of Big Boss as we know him. The Big Boss Legend was at the beginning, and he soon became the reason for the end. I still come back to Ground Zeroes from time to time because of how rich it really is. There’s so much to it.

A fun little fact you might have not known about the pair: the eye and the finger are call signs for the role between the two. Basically you call the finger for the guy with the gun, the eye for the spotter for the general intel. Both are equally trained in the Same job and can switch out when necessary, so the role allows for one to easily distinguish between the two from a administrative role without having to keep track of their positions. This is why in The phantom pain they are opposite races than in ground zeros, as they decided to switch roles.

As the 1960's was the decade of love, the 1970's was certainly the decade of violence, not one of peace. The Sandinistas and the loss of stability in Central American through CIA proxy wars, the continued tribal/state warfare that befall Africa after the European colonists "officially" left the exploited content, the Lybian revolution, the Ethiopian instability following Halie Selessies's death, the Ugandan coup, India's rise to a nuclear power and the beginnings of the Pakistani nuclear program, Pol Pot and his killing fields of 3 million dead, the Olympic Israeli hostage deaths, the creation and rise of the Irish Republican Army and ending with the Iranian revolution. This does not even include in the significant rise in street level violence across the United States.
It's still strange to me how the decade known as the "peace of love" generation was one that included the assassinations of JFK, RFK, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as the introduction of 1500 US Marines to Vietnam, which ultimately led to an all out war. Maybe our fathers and mothers called the 1970's "the decade of violence" because they realized that the "peace and love" generation ultimately failed, mostly due to apathy by the end of the Flower Generation and the beginning of new, and just as bloody, decade.
Jorin, thank you once again for another educational, stimulating and entertaining video. If only there were more creators such as yourself, this medium, and this world, would be a far better place to suffer through.

GZ tries so hard to invoke emotions into the player(thoughts generate emotions/emotions generate thoughts), using all these references so the player can create those vengeful thoughts all on their own(genesis).
It’s actually a great view on todays media as well, trying their hardest to invoke emotion of anger/fear, creating daily conflicts that never really end.. They just continue into tomorrow.

One line that always sticks out to me is something that Kaz will sometimes say during the main mission: "The rain was coming down just as hard the day we met Paz. 'I only want peace for my country.' I can't believe we ever bought that cover story. After Paz tried to steal Zeke from us, and we watched her get pulled beneath the waves... There was one thing I kept asking myself. Which was the real Paz and which was the lie?"
How do you interpret this line given that Kaz says pretty explicitly at the end of PW that he knew who Paz and the Professor were all along, and that he knew Paz was a triple agent?
    I have some interpretations:
    1. I think given the themes of MGSV (and the parallels with MGS2), it's totally possible that the entirety of GZ is some sort of dream or hallucination or recollection of the medics implanted memories that he's reliving.. or something like that. In which case, Venom likely would have a distorted memory in which Kaz was just as fooled as Snake was; in order to make Kaz more trustworthy so that he and Venom would build up Diamond Dogs together.
    2. It feels equally possible that this was simply a mistake/oversight in writing that no one noticed or cared to change

      1. Paz was shown to have severe doubts and was heavily groomed by Zero in her tapes. It’s debatable if she even wanted to sell them out after Peace Walker.
      2. Both Sons of Liberty and Phantom Pain start with a mission as who was advertised, continue with an entirely different person, and end on the note that anyone can be either snake or big boss. The difference is that while becoming the Snake is a choice, becoming the Boss is a curse passed on from tutor to student. You are sentenced to fight for the rest of your days. In TPP, Jack died, and gave the title of Boss to Venom. And whoever holds the title of Boss will live in endless battle.

How do you know the memories are false? Cassette tapes in the phantom pain confirm the events of ground zeroes?

This is basically "it isn't bad writting, it's a feature" as an excuse. Not to mention that Ground Zeroes isn't even from Venom's perspective, rather Big Boss/Snake's.

I liked the dark side on display in this game. What they did to everyone, particularly Paz and Chico was brutal (especially if you listen to the tapes)
TPP sadly falls short, though it does have dark moments, some fall flat. For example Big Boss "murdering" his infected troops turning him into a "Devil" didn't hit because everyone, you (the player), Big Boss and the "victims" knew and agreed he had to it, so much so they stand and salute and let you do it.
The heart of TPPs issues really boils down to Snake never really stepping into the shoes of Big Boss (which is ironic)
At the end of Peace Walker it really started to look like Snake was finally stepping into being Big Boss.
He was supposed to be somewhat evil by MG1/MG2 but the moment never arrives (whether you go off fake BB or real BB)
Some might argue that that's the point, that the BB we thought we knew from the outside wasn't real and that the real story of both the fake and real BB is that they were more complex but I simply don't buy into it.
Imo Hideo felt almost afraid to make him go fully evil and I think that's a shame.

Theres no point in telling a story with a 100% evil villian. That doesnt happen. Even Hitler loved his wife. Doesnt excuse the things he did, but even he had love in him. It would be completely destructive to any narrative.

    • @sarahphyllis5782
      @sarahphyllis5782 2 года назад +1

@@alexrivers8163 if that is your point than you're totally wrong in this. Did you watch the Joker movie? It brilliantly portrait how Arthur become the Evil Joker - the most iconic villain in Batman. Even people loved Dark Knight's Joker as well and the way Nolan portrayed him. Sadly Hideo Kojima did fan service in Phantom Pain and lot of content felt cut or forcefully removed. Even killing the soldiers in Afghanistan would trigger Demon Snake with horns. We all wanted to see whether Big Boss or Venom become completely evil but the game failed in that miserably. Interestingly Rockstar's Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption didn't disappoint us with a different character and touchy story. Phantom Pain on the other hand felt seriously short.

    • @alexrivers8163
      @alexrivers8163 2 года назад

@@sarahphyllis5782 joker wasn't 100% evil. He was a soldier who was wounded in battle in the nolan verse and thus his motives against society regardless of what he says in the movie are sympathetic.

Interesting video. Just one point of clarification, though. The sign regarding “No POVs” is common on military bases. Refers to “privately owned vehicles” not being allowed past certain points…don’t think it’s Kojima being cleaver about points of view or anything.

The only thing I would say that could be taken into consideration is that America has always wanted to be the bigger brother and because of this they have stuck there noses into to many personal issues that they do not truly understand. Iraq at the time was being held in an iron fist by former dictator Sudam Hussein. They where crying out failing to realize that without Sudam , they would not have a defense against Iran and other parties with there own personal interest for Iraq. Vietnam was almost the same case. Thanks for the vid. Over and out.
