It's a shame that all of this subtlety gets somewhat lost when playing the game. A lot of these details went over my head, or I was doing so many side ops that some story bits got lost on me. The video is really enlightening and gives some nice context.
I remember when I played and finished the thing a few years ago, I had an impression that there was something interesting going on under the surface, which left me with an interesting feeling; the way Miller and most of the people around V talk to you felt very schizophrenic--the Kojima-deception touches were all there. But right, the capability of the player to delve into that stuff was limited by a very overly-busy gameplay system. All the mechanics that you had to get concerned with to get the most out of the gameplay were very distracting, in my opinion. I found the schizophrenia of the whole thing interesting, but it wasn't satisfying, unlike previous MG games. Actually, there was nothing about the experience that made me want to go back and play it again. Overall, I think even though a lot of folks seem to like the kind of episodic gameplay that Peace Walker and TPP provide, I don't think Kojima's storytelling style suits that kind of gameplay system. The two don't seem to mesh naturally. I have a lot of respect for the maker of this video for being able to extract all of this. I wouldn't have had the patience.

Yeah holy shit. I was taking the events at face value waiting for the end to twist the knife. Seems like this game Koji wanted to the player to feel lost and lied to. Until they dug for this. It seems like if you apply this to the entire game, it makes what seemed like Koji Pro's laziest storytelling, hidden as some of their deepest.
i'm glad too, started this game after playing Death Stranding and impressed the graphic still compete with nowadays game although it's 4 year old game, im still playing it on mission 17 tho
So is this basically implying that cipher used venom as a puppet to allow the boss to go on with his work while also getting skull face taken out as a threat
That's what it is in short terms, the whole game is about being stripped away till you know that you're just a pawn in a game that doesn't need you anymore
Dawkins wrote 'The Selfish Gene' in the mid 70's and as far as I know was the first to coin the term 'Meme' to describe a cultural trend that spreads and mutates in the same way as a gene.
27:34 Am I mistaken that Miller vows to build up Venom Snake to defeat Big Boss and is consequently killed by Ocelot? That would mean that Miller is loyal to Venom but only for his own means. Besides, on some subconscious level, Miller remembers the medic, Ahab, because he was Big Boss’ most trusted soldier. The more I play this game, the more I realize that we were destined to defy out fate (becoming a demon) and have the option to choose to be a “good” Snake. That would make Big Boss a villain, not only for killing us, but killing someone who was good.
This series has more layers than it has any right to. That's not a bad thing. Just saying it's kinda wild how many philosophies, ideologies and interactions between you and the game just ping pong off each other relentlessly
This game is a masterpiece of storytelling Even with its flaws, it's still a masterpiece in my head and nobody can change that To learn how this slots in to all the metal gear games is amazing to experience
@Leon Russell watching the extensive amounts of cutscenes might help that aswell just as a reminder And you don't need to tell me what's wrong with the game, as I said, even with its flaws in still gonna love it and you can't change that. I don't need someone telling me about the problems I don't care about
I have to be honest, I'm mostly an immersive sim/stealth game fan and I heard that MGSV has some of the best stealth mechanics in existence, so I thought I'd be fine just hopping into MGSV without having played ANY of the previous games and I'd just focus on the gameplay and completely ignore the plot. That was a uhh... mistake. I wasn't disappointed with the gameplay at all: it's incredibly fun and polished and there are so many opportunities for emergent systems-driven planning and creativity. I fucking love it, but I'm far more lost with the story than I thought I'd be. Considering how much I love the game having beaten it (despite not having zero knowledge of what the actual fuck was going on in the plot), I'm now interested in playing all the older MGS games, not just because I love this style of stealth gameplay but because I kind of want context.
@@joetroutt7425 If I were you I'd try playing the rest of the games, or at least watching the cutscenes for such games in this order: MGS3, Peace Walker, MSX Metal Gear games, MGS1, MGS2, and MGS4.

Started researching the MGS universe... I just accidentally achieved my second doctorates, this one in metaphysics, my first in robotics and AI. I still don't have a clue. Kojima is a genius and madman far beyond any of us, and I both fear and respect him.
I happened to find Paz almost immediately when the medical platform was built. When Ocelot (the guy who hypnotized himself into thinking arms could possess people) brought up dissociative dissonance and amnesia and what not, I was under the impression that the man with helicopter and human fragments in his skull and body would be a somewhat unreliable source. I thought he was simply in denial and the brain damage was making his trauma way worse. Oh boy if only
Malak in Hebrew means Messenger, but Melech means King. “A Messenger with Broken Wings” more than likely alludes to Lucifer. Lucifer, Devil, and Satan are not the same. Satan means, ‘Adversary,’ and there are more than one ‘Satans.’ Devil is a Greek transliteration of the Hebrew ‘Satan.’ That means there are also ‘devils,’ not a singular entity.
It’s so weird skull face is kinda the whole reason MGS series played out the way it did. Had he not gone into a coma I think Zero would have tried to make it right with Snake.
@BrokenMikrofone If your first reaction to someone speculating into lore and having fun with it is to get aggressive cause they enjoyed it more than you did, who is really the one coping?
Venous Snake also collects people for his operation in the field, and ocelot is a master interrogater. Venous snake is bringing people into the Lion's Den. They think they are being saved but really are falling into the hands of their unknown enemy and masters. Though at one point they kill their own people, through a virus that attaches to the vocal cords, so the player is non the wiser, that this is a ploy.
It's refreshing to see someone actually dive into the text presented to us and try to make sense of it instead of going on about how all of this is a metaphor for Kojima's feelings
I hope you do a part 2. Out of all the MGS games, V is one of the most confusing because the line between reality and simulation has never been so blurry. There's not much explanation in game or in essay/videos so this helps a lot to understand just what is going on
@@meticulouselectronics I've heard the theory that GZ was an implanted memory in Venom but never that BB is the leader of XOF. And the additional objectives in missions don't make missions harder, just more muddled. He outdid himself in terms of story presentation and meaning, but totally dropped the ball with balance. Unless it's Konami's fault and Kojima never intended to boost the player's progress with online money and rewards.

I thank you for supporting the cause
The metal gear fan base originally didn't see between the lines and now the ones who do, find the game the best masterpiece of the franchise. The game should have had a grey fox, sniper wolf, flamethrower guy etc and lead into the combination of motherbase and outer heaven
The thing about Diamond Dogs having people within the superpowers is mentioned by Kaz in a tape, he calls them HEC, and that they are basically moles that go to battlefields to give you intel, or make their way into the superpowers to know what's happenig within governments and ensure Diamond Dogs gets work.
Thanks so much for making this i was just watching you and it’s suprising when i see you uploaded so fast, and thanks for going over what actually happens because so many people will say nothing happened in this game
Just like the "V" standing for the letter and the number, the phrase "V has come to" is also "5 has come 2". It marks the beginning of the 2nd part of the game split into 2, as well as the 2nd episode of "the TV series" following the "pilot episode", the main Ground Zeroes mission.
I see it almost as like what the doctor said when you first woke up in Cyprus, that we may not really see things as they are, so by saying "5 has come 2" it's almost like the game is saying "5 has now become 2", a sort of variation of 2+2=5. But then again, that's my take on it

It's easy to see how without the charm of these stranger elements, Metal Gear Solid would feel a lot more generic.
Awesome video, when people say MGSV has a bad story, they don’t focus on the dialogue by radio and cassettes, it has a very amazing atmosphere of storytelling
Yeah, because that is what I want in my MGS - having to focus on shit that is being told in audio cassettes recorded for no reason. Pull your head out of Kojima's ass. The game's shit and he clearly didn't want to make it.
@@joetroutt7425 You think so ? I'm pretty sure he's probably much more surprised that quite a lot of people pushed that pile of shit back up his rectum. I don't think he misses MGS. He wanted to be done with it for decades, allegedly. But it's true - Death Stranding is the anti-fun. MGS used to be about crazy shit going on literally each half an hour, with everything culminating in some absurdly over-the-top, entertaining awesomness... But that was old Kojima, the one who still realized that in order to be praised he has to deliver. This new Kojima is a overpraised has-been genius who for a moment thought that he's on top of the world and can subject gamers to literally any type of boredom now that he's hailed as some kind of messiah. That's just what happens when a guy who starts with a game about a penguin gets praised into the skies long enough.
There aren't "three ciphers" there aren't even two. There is only one Cipher, which is Zero's organization. XOF used to be part of it, but Skull Face and XOF split up with Cipher to carry out his revenge on the world. This whole time you are fighting only XOF and russian or central african military that have absolutely nothing to do with Cipher. Miller is just going on and on about Cipher because he developed a huge paranoia and Ocelot feeds into it too because he is in on it, as Zero told him personally.
You make a good point. There has always been one cipher. Secretly ran by zero. Skull face was a part of it. Even back in 64 when skull face shadowed big boss' mission. However that all went to hell in 75 when skull face became a mutinee by attacking msf and big boss and then trying to kill his own cipher boss zero with that pin. The original cipher only wanted to establish big boss, although big boss wanted nothing to do with zero/cipher. Zero was obsessed with big boss and clearly loved him to the end as you can hear in that final tape where zero goes through all the trouble of visiting him in the Cyprus hospital. The ai cipher is zero's cipher after the attack on him and he can no longer trust his own cognitive capabilities and future (as he admitts to big boss in the hospital) and he orders sigint to put up this plan
@@Nilon241 Miller says "It's XOF, it will end up in Cipher's hands." As I told you, XOF hasn't been part of Cipher since at least Ground Zeroes. Miller doesn't know, he thinks it's Cipher behind everything due to his paranoia. In reality it's just XOF remnants.

Due to it being a stealth and Metal Gear Solid game I would recommend using a controller to play it. You get more precise character movement and the button layout fits perfectly. At least this is how I played it.
@ the 360 degrees movement of a controller is great, yeah. The 8 different directions of movements with WASD leave something to be desired ,true. Though the precission and speed of a mouse do make up for it. Makes aiming a little to easy sometimes... Luckilly I can switch between controller setups whenever I want 😁

I never saw Skull Face having any interesting on taking over Cipher/Patriots itself, for the sake of power that is, it was more that he was using Zero's infrastructure to get his revenge on the world, he had seized XOF for himself and was doing well with just the one branch of Cipher/Patriots. On a side note, after I finished the game, after some thinking, I started to think that maybe Skull Face is supposed to be a reflection of Venom Snake in many ways and Kojima do seem to imply that heavily in his trailers, like Skull Face's backstory being paralle to Venom's brainwashing. But for me there's one parallel that stood out for me, Skull face seizing a part of Zero's Cipher to his own agenda.... and Venom on Outer Heaven's uprising. I strongly believe that after discovering the truth, Venom Snake took the same route of Skull Face and that Big Boss did sent Solid Snake to kill him.
Never looked at it like that !!! Interesting theory definitely makes sense. I took it as even after he found out the truth he was still loyal to big boss. I read somewhere that chipor attacked DD because there can only be one big boss and venom has played his role so his time is up. D dog along with many others die. Venom along with a handful of DD survivors find refuge at outer heaven. Big boss leaves venom in charge while he takes command of foxhound to keep an eye on the inside. Eventually word gets out about a new nation to the government and big boss takes the task. He then sends in solid snake to obtain false information, but solid snake kept digging deeper and deeper till he found out about the metal gear amd destroyed everything. That was the point of outerheaven to be a place for Soldiers when there not needed. Plus when listening to the truth tapes its obvious its under attack. Its under attack by chipor, then when the camera backs up the logo changes to outerheaven, with shoots beeing heard, now hes in the real outerheaven and its under attack by solid, he looks in the mirror amd sees the demon hes become to make there dream (big boss amd now his ) come to light only to be takin by solid, punches the mirror and heads into the room to fight solid.
I think in the end tapes in impled that Skullface was sitting on the sidelines at the Snake Eater mission if Snake failed. That he always got BBs leftovers, and that's what made him bitter against Zero and BB I think Skull is supposed to be Big Bosses black mirror reflection, the Cane to Snake's Able. Remember he opposed the real BB in Ground Zeros? Skull is among the people that don't know about the body double. The last piece of evidence for this is how zero used a copy of BB to kill Skull, because he used a copy of the boss's pin to kill Zero. Sounds like a morrored final taunt.

Yeah holy shit. I was taking the events at face value waiting for the end to twist the knife. Seems like this game Koji wanted to the player to feel lost and lied to. Until they dug for this. I thank you for supporting the cause
The metal gear fan base originally didn't see between the lines and now the ones who do, find the game the best masterpiece of the franchise. The game should have had a grey fox, sniper wolf, flamethrower guy etc and lead into the combination of motherbase and outer heaven
They're preserving it's meme.
It also works seeing as Venom is the fifth (to us, but second chronologically) person to use the name Snake as well.
I see it almost as like what the doctor said when you first woke up in Cyprus, that we may not really see things as they are, so by saying "5 has come 2" it's almost like the game is saying "5 has now become 2", a sort of variation of 2+2=5. But then again, that's my take on it
Kojima has confirmed on twitter its pronounced mgsV and not mgs 5, because its a metal gear solid game about venom, and not snake
Also a lot of similarities with MGS2 (probably just wishful thinking)

Then who are you keeping Code Talker's research from in that mission after Skull Face is killed? Pretty sure they call them Cipher there.

Miller says "It's XOF, it will end up in Cipher's hands."
As I told you, XOF hasn't been part of Cipher since at least Ground Zeroes. Miller doesn't know, he thinks it's Cipher behind everything due to his paranoia. In reality it's just XOF remnants.

The 8 different directions of movements with WASD leave something to be desired ,true.

Something I'd like to add to "Where the Bees Sleep" is that on a first viewing, at least for me, Sahelanthropus was only shown by its , and mechanical hand, grabbing Venom
To me this is not only a connection between the bionics expert, the prosthetic, and Sahelanthropus, but its as if to show Venom is gripped by his disability and struggles as a result of it
This is a very detailed analysis of this game I loved. I can tell you have invested many hours doing this and so you now have a new follower.
After MG Solid the story became so freaking out there that you damn near needed an advance degree in Metal Gear history to understand what the hell is going on..
Kojima: "Took them long enough!"
It’s a testament to how good this game is that I, and many others, enjoyed playing dozens if not hundreds of hours without knowing what the hell was ever going on in terms of the story
Hey man, absolutely ADORE your videos and channel cause MGS is a life-changing game series.
Can you PLEASE eventually do these 'what even happens' videos for every MGS game? I literally put these on my RUclips playlist for when I sleep and I sort of wake up to some of them with a warmth in my heart sometimes haha
I'm so glad you made these. Thanks FSP.
Damn, I had no idea MGSV was so intricate. I really gotta go back and finish it.
Me before clicking this video: I don't need to watch this. I already know all of MGSV's story
After: Oh
You automatically win. You are the only person I have seen that finally gets the title right. It is MGS V NOT 5.
You are the only one I have seen that gets it completely right. For that alone you get a A+.
Dont you mean S++? ;)
As someone who has played this game like 10 times thank you so much for skipping the hospital scene
17:22 holy shit just realized this is another nod to the fact Venom is a copy, since in MGS3 Big Boss gets complimented on speaking Russian fluently at some point in the game. crazy foreshadowing
Glad someone else saw what I saw. The Smoke and Mirrors in this game are very well placed and everything always seems well staged, every mission seems like a set and objectives are too similar to how things occur in later games. Awesome game though I replayed it again saw so much I didn't before.
Brilliant dissection
Wasn’t ‘Cipher’ was also the name of the ‘flying camera’ that takes pics of Solid Snake on the deck of the USS Discovery at the start of MGS2?!
Cipher isn't the name of the camera, but the entity behind the camera. Cipher is the group. Not a person or device
Natsuki814 Natsuki814 Natsuki814 Snake says ‘Cypher’ when he looks at the flying-camera device, so that must mean the device is called a Cipher itself - Otacon thinks it’s with the Military (Cypher-T), but Snake says it’s Army. I am not sure that Snake knows of the hidden group at this point in the story, though I may be wrong. Here is a link to a real-world device the game device may be based on en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_Cypher
?!
Interrogating the guy with kids in America playing while snake demands him to speak is my highlight media this week
Love your content dude. I was getting a MGS itch and discovered your channel. Made me replay MGSV.
Can’t wait for part 2
