When I was 15, my foster mom bought this song on a 45 for me. It was because I was always willing to help her around the house and in the yard. She called me her favorite (only) son. That meant the world to me. Since then, I have been in love with this song. I had always liked the Doobies, but that cemented it for me.
I was a Sophomore in high-school when this was released as a B-Side single in November of 1974, and I remember thinking, "It isn't going to get much better than this" how fortunate we were to have music of this caliber played daily on the radio, wouldn't change it for the world.
C. Middleton I was a junior in college. This (and the Doobies in general) was right in my wheelhouse. And got lots of play on my Technics turntable (which I still have).
Long Train Runnin' might be my favorite "radio song" from the Doobie Brothers, but it's undeniable that this is their finest song, as a work of art. They made a song from the 1970s sound like an instant classic from another era.
Every hit record the Doobie Brothers had up until that time was written by Tom Johnston . They all got major air play but none of them went to #1. Black Water, written by Pat Simmons, was his first single and the Doobie Brothers first #1 hit.
Terrific live version ,never gets old!! A time when bands incorated harmonies and complex versions of lyrics, instruments and sheer unadulterated talent!!
In case any one plays guitar, Patrick Simmons has his guitar tune to G,thats how he gets that sound, hes actually a genius to come up with that ,but that why they are so great, Am to D ,,try it 😁
Happy 50th anniversary to the Doobie Brothers Thank you for the memories we keep safe in our minds and hearts with your music as the soundtrack. When I hear this masterpiece I am on my way to church with my beloved grandfather
As great as The Eagles were, they never rocked as much as they should have. But THEY get all the glory..Victim Of Love, Life In The Fast Lane, Already Gone..If they rocked like that more often they would be a truly kickass band..The Doobie Brothers kicked more ass...fm
marcy Denville I was happy Allman Brothers & Lynyrd Skynyrd came to Buffalo, NY in 70s. That Buffalo called SNOW CAPITAL OF USA because of 1977 Blizzard. I don't blame people we got 19 feet of snow from that storm, City & Schools closed for 3 weeks. Its still bad we get 10 feet every winter from Lake Erie. At least we have the Lake for summer fun even if its only 3 months Buffalo always has a WHITE CHRISTMAS
Michael McDonald said in a documentary on the Doobies that when Pat announced he was leaving the Doobies, the others realized that this ended the band as it was then. He said that as long as Pat was part of the group, they could continue to perform as the Doobie Brothers; without him, they couldn't. (I'm not that fond of the Michael McDonald years. I love the Steely Dan sound when Steely Dan was playing it, not when the Doobie Brothers were. I was ecstatic when Tommy returned and the core original Doobies reformed.)
In Glasgow I saw this band live for the very first time a few days ago and i have to say this band ..... blew me away live! Easily and i mean easily the best live act I have ever seen and i have seen a lot ! You know how you can see an older band and you see them in name only but not really in nature, as they are all a bit older, well this is absolutely not the case with the Doobie Brothers...the sound on stage is album fresh and the energy on stage could not be topped .... i stood watching them thinking to myself, I TOTALLY get why in the Hells Angeles endorsed this band in California in 1970 whilst watching them except I was getting that and understanding that in 2017 whilst watching them .... they are 100% authentic Rock n Roll Royalty and should be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame !

It only took a few weeks to absorb all the lyrics for a lifetime-I still know and love them both today. We also had an open campus and an outdoor smoking area-things have changed!
Thank goodness for FM classic rock stations. SO many old songs like this hidden away somewhere in our memories until we hear them again. Thanks Doobie Brothers!

Because the hall of fame is a complete joke. Now they induct rappers

Indeed they were.
With all the debate over who was better, Tom Johnston or Michael McDonald...it would appear that Pat Simmons never got the credit he deserved in sticking with the band all the way through. Very talented guy.
No doubt that Michael McDonald ruined the Doobie Brothers. Patrick Simmons & John McFee were the heart of the band
@@MartyWininger McFee didn't join until 1979. 9 years after Johnston and Simmons started the band. Simmons was the only original member all the years.
Beautiful voice and soul as well. All brought a different sound and excellence to the group.
Pat was my favorite
Pat Simmons has a fabulous voice with great range. Michael McDonald did not.

absolutely !!! u r not alone !!!
In my opinion, this is the greatest song ever recorded. NEVER fails to lift my mood, any time and under any circumstances
as good as any !!!
Probably a few Beatles songs ahead of it, but it's right up there for sure. The ending is a killer
The Best
This song has a very deep meaning, only those with an emotional attachment to music can understand.
This and Mr. Blue Sky
45 years later and I STILL love this band. Well done, Doobies!!
Still love this band since I first heard them in the early 70s
This is how it is done live. What a great band.
Almost every song The Doobie Brothers did became an American classic.

When Patrick let out that little excited exclaimation sound, he's got spunk!
This is the one song more than any of them that takes me back to the 70s as a kid.

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS, A GREAT BAND...
If all music were like this, the world would be a much better place.
Pat Simmons has such a happy soul. Love watching him perform!
John McFee can play anything!
Word. No slouch on the fiddle. And that's not an instrument you just casually pick up and play.. Unless you want to round up cats.
Let the Doobie Brothers be placed in the Hall of Fame!
I totally agree!!
This music never does get old!
Wow. Their voices have never gotten weak. They sound amazing. God bless.
Probably because they recorded songs they could easily sing live. That does play into how long your voice lasts.
I was a Sophomore in high-school when this was released as a B-Side single in November of 1974, and I remember thinking, "It isn't going to get much better than this" how fortunate we were to have music of this caliber played daily on the radio, wouldn't change it for the world.
I was fifteen that year. Miss my "seventies" music!
C. Middleton I was a junior in college. This (and the Doobies in general) was right in my wheelhouse. And got lots of play on my Technics turntable (which I still have).
Joel Johnson I guess Technics was the Turntable to own, because my husband and I had one as well.
+C. Middleton
I was a freshman in high school that year and it was one of the best song's I'd ever heard.

Will never tire of hearing this classic, DOOBIES forever!
This is one of the great 20th Century American songs. No contest. It'll turn up in a 22nd Century Folk Songbook, mark my humble words!
The joy that their music brings to the audience is simply amazing. For two hours, every person there was sixteen again!!!
Excellent performance by The Doobie Brothers
Long Train Runnin' might be my favorite "radio song" from the Doobie Brothers, but it's undeniable that this is their finest song, as a work of art. They made a song from the 1970s sound like an instant classic from another era.

No Doobie Bros. concert is complete without hearing this song. Such harmony..so unreal!
Also got to love the underrated talents of John McFee, who seems to play every instrument. Love this band forever!

The Doobies... from an era where bands sounded just as good live as they do on their records.
My first concert, 1974. Ticket was $7 and had to drive 90 miles. Ozark Mountain Daredevils opened, all acoustic
One of the coolest songs.
