It’s just…it’s that Telemachus spent his entire life under the shadow, legacy, AND distant protection afforded to the son of THE Odysseus, while also being a target because of it. It’s the determined love his mother has for this man he’s never known, buying Odysseus time. It’s the speechlessness that comes with coming face-to-face with the hero, the LEGEND, he’s built up in his mind that’s the towering opposite to all the suitors who’ve invaded his home and tormented him. And it’s Telemachus realizing that, this is also just a haggard man who has loved him and loved him and still loves him. That he doesn’t NEED to be someone legendary to match up and prove himself (to be approved of) by his father. After all this time, all the older men who bullied (and plan to kill) him, he’s faced with all he’s ever truly wanted from this father he doesn’t remember. And it’s Odysseus’ unconditional love that has driven him for 20 years, finally bringing back the very best of this very human man back to the forefront.

The fact that you can hear the joy and relief in Odysseus' voice when he says "my son, I'm finally home!" 😭 He's waited 20 years to say those words and now he finally got his chance to.

  • @percyswife4ever

    “My son, I’m finally home!”
That’s Odysseus’s war cry. That’s what he fought for. He never fought to win, to take over, to have a name in the world. He fought for his family. He fought so that he could get home. He fought for his wife and son. And now, after 20 years, he finally made it home to his now adult son. I haven’t read the Odyssey yet, but I plan to, and I’m very much prepared to cry when I read their reunion. My eyes stung throughout this song, but those last words made the tears stream. Epic is a masterpiece and deserves so much more attention.
I can’t wait for this song to be released.

i love the fact that as soon as odysseus sees his son, the second he lays eyes on him, he loves him. odysseus hasn't even seen this boy since he was an infant, and he doesn't know who telemachus actually is. despite this, odysseus loves him immediately, and for the sole fact that telemachus is odysseus's son. it brings tears to my eyes everytime.

Odysseus has spenty literally decades trying to get back to his family, to his wife and son. And when he gets home, he doesn't find his infant son, but a twenty year old, a young man. He doesn't know this man, he can only imagine what he's seen and heard and experienced. And it doesn't matter to him. That man is his son. Twenty years have done nothing to diminish his love, and he loves this grown stranger with all the save love he had for that baby twenty years ago

I'm sure with how familiar everyone is familiar with how masterful 'Epic' is by now, most people could pick up the use of piano and guitar to show their unison. It starts with the piano for Telemachus being played along with the small melodic phrase that keeps repeating within the song. Then, the nylon string acoustic guitar representative of Odysseus's vulnerability being played within his half of the song, and in the big hug at the end, you can hear both the piano and guitar playing harmoniously on the same melodic line of Telemachus' section. BRO I BAWLED.

The almost wild glee, happiness and utterly and absolute delight on his voice and face when Odysseus says “My son, I’m finally home!” absolutely made my heart explode with joy in the best way. As @percyswife4ever brilliantly states, this is his War Cry. This is his soul roaring in delight, his ultimate victory. EVERYTHING he did was to return home and his almost uncontrolled joy just makes its all the more beautiful. We all deserve a father like Odysseus.

    LYRICS:
    (spoken) Father?
All my life I have died to meet you
Thought about your name so much it hurts
For twenty years I dreamt of how I’d greet you
    Oh, and now you’re here
    I can’t find the words
All my life, I have died to know you
Days and nights I wish that I could show you
For twenty years I never could outgrow you
    Oh, and now you’re here
    I can’t help but wonder
    What your world must be
    If we’re like each other
If I have your strength in me
    I can’t help feel like
    Sorrow’s all I’ve known
And I can’t help but realize
For so long I’ve felt alone
    *Odysseus:*
Oh, my son, look how much you’ve grown
Oh, my boy, sweetest joy I’ve known
Twenty years ago I held you in my arms
    How time has flown, oh
Used to say I’d make the storm clouds cry for you
Used to say I’d capture wind and sky for you
Held you in my arms, prepared to die for you
    Oh, how time has flown
    I can only wonder
    What your world has been
    Things you’ve had to suffer
And the strength you hold within
All I’ve wanted was to reunite with my own
    Twenty years we’ve wandered
    But today you’re not alone
    My son, I’m finally home!

Oh I can’t tell you how I long to see this seen fully animated by someone, there’s tons of animatics already for warrior of the mind. Odysseus’ story is probably my favorite Greek myth for all the hardships, sacrifices, and losses he suffered before finally making it home, hugging his son’s neck, seeing his dog one last time, and reuniting with his beloved and ever faithful Penelope. It’s the only story that ends happily for all involved from that era.

Ooo- I love the lines about the storm and the winds because he HAS done all of that! He went to the god of the winds for help against the storms. He evaded Poseidon across the ocean. He faced down Zeus and LIVED. He has faced the storms and the sea and the sky all for this moment. 😭
Also, the little piano bit reminds me of Athena's distinctive bit as well which I like because Athena has had such a mark on both of their lives over the last 20 years. Helping turn Odysseus into the man he was when he wed Penelope, Troy and the war, befriending Telemachus when Odysseus was away, helping Odysseus escape Calypso's island... she has had so much influence on so many moments that all piled up on top of each other just to get to this.
And Odysseus' return isn't just a return to his home. In a way, it's a way for him to try and return to the man he was before all the fire and flames of Troy and his journey back across the oceans. It's the chance he's been longing for to return to that bright, eager, young man whom Athena first mentored and, in turn, to pass that legacy on to his son.
