Obviously, he’s not afraid of water and never told Penelope that he’s afraid of water, so she would be like ‘uh. What?’ Whether that’s for his own sanity or because he just doesn’t want to risk the 0.0001% chance that it could actually be Penelope is kind of cool. He even gives little smirk after she fails it like ‘gotcha’. Edit: Yes, I know the daughter thing is also a giveaway, but she said that unprompted. It wasn’t really part of Odysseus testing her. It was just her slipping up on her own and doubling down on her mistakes. Since it wasn’t part of the test, it was irrelevant to the point I was making.
And I love that in the animatic, you can see that, too. When she first shows up, it’s animated to show that he hesitates for like half a second before he greets her. Then, he smiles almost placatingly and mentions being afraid of the water. Then, when she doesn’t pick up on the lie and also talks about a daughter that doesn’t exist, he smiles to himself a little. Almost bitter yet triumphant. Like “Got you” or “I freaking knew it”. I showed this to a friend who doesn’t know the show. On the first watch, she figured out it was a siren, but didn’t realize Odysseus was tricking her. Then, it got to the part with the bow. Overall, it felt more cartoony than normal, but I feel like that just reflects the silliness of this song. Extra 8: Someone pointed out the single frame of Scylla. Can't wait to see THAT! in motion!
as stawberrymilknya pointed out the kid is just seaweed and bones, but I find the idea of the kid being a young siren to be hilarious, like "TAKE YOUR KID TO WORK DAY :DDDD"
I love how Penelope is just floating in the water effortlessly, arms stretched out, no need to swim, cause the Siren is using her fish tail beneath the water.
I mean, technically you can do that as a human too. You just kick your legs. It's not as good as it would be with a fishtail, though, so your point still stands.
@@tearsofthekingdom9062 actually you can float while hardly treading water at all in the Mediterranean sea, where most of the Odyssey takes place. The water's more dense due to the higher salt content. Pretty much all you need to do is inhale and you'll keep your head above water
I absolutely love that second at 2:01 where Odysseus is genuinely pissed off- he’s been acting all nice, but now he’s got the information he needs his mask starts to crack little by little!! Amazing attention to detail!!
The best thing here is the fact that his crew is watching all this mess. Odysseus: *flirts with siren, literally dances on the edge of the ship, pretends to be shy princess* Everyone else: ...whaaa- I just want to see the face of Eurylochus, seriously :D
I like the little smirk Odysseus does after the siren says "come play with me and our daughter"! Kinda a very subtle nod that he knows more than hes letting on.
I had to slow down the animatic A LOT when Penelope mentioned the lair of Scylla, but that one frame of Scylla followed by Odysseus’s reaction and the siren sharpening her nails and showing her teeth, she’s just waiting for her food to stop yapping. Plus I love just how Invested she is in the whole Poseidon thing.
Feels like on the same type where people who get excited when you ask them about something they are really knowledgeable on (since Penelope siren knows about the best routes from the lyrics of different beast)
I love the "I would take the suffering from you" line so much. To take the suffering from someone can mean to soothe or comfort someone, right? well, to end the suffering can also refer to suicide She's asking Odysseus to allow her to kill him
She also is only focused on the suffering, nothing else. Not his fear, not his wish to stay dry. The siren saw that the suffering was the easiest to lock on to and try to get him under her control
I love how Odysseus is shown always looking at the siren when she talks, revealing later he was reading her lips and that his ears were plugged the entire time.
I mean in the sirens defense, after a war and 12 years of horrible things happening on his trip, it’s not too far fetched to suddenly be afraid of the water
After all the shit that this man goes through, I’m pretty sure every morning that he wakes up and looks out at the sea and proceeds to flip it off every morning now because he has to, but simply because it’s just become part of his routine. Because no matter how much he and Penelope get it on there is no being on Greek mythology that fucked Odysseus more than the sea itself
@@sinfuladam "no matter how much he and Penelope get it on there is no being on Greek mythology that fucked Odysseus more than the sea itself" - OMG I'm cackling so hard at this
I love at 1:29 where it focuses in on Odysseus' eyes and then the siren's lips as her mouth movements are much more defined than the rest of the animatic because he's reading her lips. Incredible attention to detail
1:59 the pure emotion Odysseus shows when getting splashed by the siren, hes trying so hard right there to not blow his cover. It is amazing, the emotion through it all is beautiful
i love how the daughter lowkey does look like telemachus, also kinda random but i really like the choice of colors, they help set the mood a lot, the blue/purple really helps sell the dreamy/fantasy vibe, then there's the style changing when Odysseuss is explaining the situation to the style for vases, and then the yellow for Penelope that changes to the purple/blue again but darker when she starts to talk about scylla and show her dangerous side
Maybe the sirens saw a random pic of the family but telemachus was so young and had enough "feminine" features for them to assume: _screw it, it's a gal_
@@THATBrokeAroSpecWalletthey didn't have pictures in ancient greece, imo it's just how facts get distorted - while Scylla can look exactly like Penelope does, she actually doesn't know much about the family. Odysseus says things like "I prefer my feet on the ground" and that he's scared of the water, things which the real Penelope would definitely know aren't true. Similarly Scylla may only know that they have a child, but is unaware or falsely assumes it's a girl. She isn't all-knowing after all
@@justahermit1172 That's not Scylla, that's a siren. It would be hilarious if it was her but then she'd be dead because Odysseus killed them all. Scylla is so powerful that she doesn't need to trick anyone, pretty sure.
I noticed there seemed to be a lot of detail as to syncing her mouth to the lyrics in that moment, didn't even cross my mind it's because he's reading her lips. Very good attention to detail from gigi, as usual.
When I first listened to Suffering, I remember feeling like it was a Dream or a Flashback or something, with just a hint of something being off. It's not supposed to be clear that she's a Siren, it's supposed to almost trick you like a Siren would, with it Revealed in a Different Beast. Something I've noticed with other Animatics is that they all seem to kinda shove in your face that she's a siren throughout the whole thing since Odysseus already knows she's a Siren, but I think it shouldn't be obvious to the Audience. Your Animatic did that really well, only really showing anything obviously Siren-like at the bit where it shifts away from the Sweet interaction between Penelope and Odysseus into the thing abt the Lair of Scylla. You really captured all this really well!
I love how the siren seems like so genuinely invested in telling him the best way to pass through sylla . Even through the little “oh no!” Like she’s genuinely so invested lol!
I got the vibe that she loves to get to be clever, and this was a way to scratch that itch in a way that trickery doesn't. I like to imagine that in a different telling maybe Odysseus got her on his side, like with Circe, and he introduces her to Athena like "Hey, found you a new friend!"
I like how Ody is chill at first and the moment Sirenelope really confirms that she isn't his wife by saying "our daughter" he's just like "Cue dramatics!"
Okay so i love *literally everything about this animatic* but the little hand motions Ody does during "Giant Waves and Giant Storms." Is just. So cute. I love them so much
Aaaahh I love the Ancient Greek vase style with Odysseus' monologue and his sassy, playful lines with Penelope. Her smile is even different from the real Penelope showing that she isn't real. Also the teeth and nail sharpening were so cool! They bit with the daughter was so funny to me. It was like Penelope pulled the daughter out from her inventory! Brilliant animatic! ❤
The execution of Odysseus telling the story of how Poseidon was stopping him from getting home was done really well. It was in a historic Greek and Roman format, and it looked extremely visually pleasing.
I love how we can tell its not Penelope bye the fact that 1. She doesn't have a viola playing behind her in the beginning and 2. She says daughter instead of son, so that's cool!
I love how the siren gets so impatient, that she doesn't even try lie or really listen to what he saying or how he acting. You can tell she not use to trying this hard.
@@BeansproutGamesSirens here rather than just the voices seem capable of taking on physica appearances. That’s probably whats happening? They just made a girl physically resemble him
I like how you sorta hid the fact that she was a siren in this, all the other animatics blatantly show that shes really a siren, but the way Jay intended is that we dont find out until different beast so im glad you did it this way
Honestly this has to be one of my absolute FAVORITE animation for suffering! I love how “Penelope” seems so genuine especially when giving Ody the information about how to get back to Ithaca while avoiding Poseidon. There’s no subtle animation showing the sirens or that “Penelope” herself is a siren until the ending of the songs. Most other animations make it very obvious that Penelope was a siren the whole time and I think that kind of ruins what Jorge was going for with that song. Bc the whole point was giving as little information as possible, with little hints such as “come play with me and our daughter” knowing full well they don’t have a daughter, until the next song “Different Beasts.” I’m so glad this was the first animation I saw of “Suffering” because it made it way more enlightening and mysterious.
EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS. -The lack of linework at the beginning -ODY BEING SUCH A SASSY LITTLE- -The pithos designs during Ody’s slideshow presentation -Siren!Penelope pulling out the map during HER slideshow (personally it’s giving Emperor’s New Groove in the best way) -Siren!Penelope filing her nails with a starfish -THE COLORS OF THE BACKGROUND GOING DARKER WHEN ODY ISN’T PLAYING ALONG AND IS LOW-KEY PANICKING ABOUT SCYLLA SKHFAKJDSNKXKSBFKSHDSJ I LOVE ITTT
I love watching how people interpret Siren Penelope’s mannerisms. This might be my favourite adaption yet. The way she’s so apathetic after giving terrible news, yet pretends to be so eager and caring is great. The camera panning through Scylla’s caves was wayyy cooler than it had any right to be.
This video illustrates one of my favorite moments in this song, which is just the Siren's entirely chipper "Oh no!" like she's actually humorously distressed at Odysseus's hypothetical. Every time I hear it, I just giggle a little given how casual it makes the whole ordeal Odysseus's been through so far.
That "Oh no~!" at 1:22 is so cute xD The little theater of him explaining his questions is an adorable touch. God, I love how Odysseus clearly knows something is wrong, and they're both playing around to some degree, but... His mild annoyance at "Penelope" splashing him is very telling. AND HIM SECRETLY LOADING UP THE BOW AT THE END 🔥🔥
Loving Ody’s dramatic ass here 😂 The little uwu on the _totally real daughter’s_ face I can’ttttt The kinda-rap part being presented Kuzco-style is a highlight, love it! I like how as “Penelope” is going on about Scylla, she slowly loses the disguise and playfulness, only to quickly put it back up at “Now jump in the water!” Speaking of, I love the sort of bouncy, playful vibe of this one, and how it’s briefly cut off as Ody learns what he’ll have to do to get home. The little distortions with the background hissing are really cool!
I love how the siren actually looks very friendly and cheery! As much as I love the type of siren where you can see a bit of slyness on their face, I also love this version, where she’s lying super well
I feel like Odysseus's look of affection and longing when he first sees the siren, is real. Even though he knows it's not the real Penelope, he hasn't seen his wife in 12 years and can pretend for just a few minutes that he made it back home to her.
The way Odysseus starts toying with the siren KNOWING she's a siren is absolutely wild at 0:55 with the fact she nearly got him. I started laughing, i wont lie.
If anyone’s wondering, the reason that Poseidon is “scared to roam” near Scylla’s lair is because she’s his ex, and his wife probably won’t like him being so close to her home. He’s not afraid of Scylla herself, he’s afraid of his wife’s reaction to him being to near to her.
THIS IS INCREDIBLE! The part where she says "now jump in the water" after telling him to go through the lair is soooo beautifully done, as well as the splash of water on Odysseus.
I love how, even though she says it in roughly the same tone every time, each of the Siren's promises to "take the suffering away" grow more and more threatening. You can just tell, exponentially more so as the song progresses, that the Siren intends to take away a lot more than just suffering from you.
1:15 Not the siren having to hear Odysseus infodump so she can convince him she's actually his wife and drown him 😭 Also i love how he knows but keeps playing dumb with the "Im too shy" 🥺👉👈
My favorite part about this song and the animatic are 1:53 Just Ody singing "Penelope why, you know I'm too shy and terrified" I just love how playful he sound along with the hand gesture 😂❤ Edit: WAIT THIS WAS A MONTH AGO!?
Finally someone who draws the siren to react in a very convincing and caring type of way while saying "oh no" instead of rolling her eyes! Like she is literaly pretending to be his loving wife i think she would be invented into the act in a deeper level so he would fall for it... Thank you gigi we love you and i am in love with every animation you make! 🙏💖
0:43 I bet you he was thinking "mmm I would actually love to have a daughter, Telemachus would be a brother and the island will have a princess....... will have to talk to Penelope about it when i'm back"
I love how Odysseus is always watching the siren as she talks. Surprisingly, that’s not something all the animatics have. But it’s such a great detail that does not go unnoticed here.
I love how the "daughter" is animated like a lifeless stuffed animal with no change in expression or body movements other then being moved around by siren Penelope
Love the movements here, the casual, dance-y energy matches the song so well, and it really adds to how Ody keeps up the over-the-top relaxed act. The hinted transformation and subtle glee from the siren is great, and the final ‘I will take the suffering’ shot is great - The deceptively harmless-looking circle of tiny fish around her calling to mind a ring of sharks or piranhas. It’s sort of funny that most animatics have been showing his portrayal of ‘I’m too shy’ in the sort of coy sense of the word, but I was more thinking of it in connection to the ‘terrified’ bit - Like how a horse ‘shies’ from water or a big jump.
Gigi, Gigi. GIGI, STOP BEING SO FREAKING TALENTED FOR 5 SECONDS! I love this so much! I just love all the emotions you put into Odysseus, how playful and theatrical he is, just enjoying the moment. He knows he has the thing in his finger tips, and he's just playing with her before he crushes her in his fist, but also immersing himself in what is effectively role playing begin with his wife again. Its very fun and semi-sweet, but also has an odd edge to it. It fits the vibe of the song really well. The bit where The sirens true features started poking out was just effing awesome (plus, her using the starfish to file her nails was just simply golden. I honestly laughed at that). And the cuts to the traditional greek art background with Odysseus was GREAT. Its the first time I've seen that kind of imagery in an EPIC animatic and you did it really well. As a whole, you just did an amazing job with the piece, and I honestly CANNOT wait to see your take on Scylla. Oh, almost forgot: Her just freaking MATERIALIZING A CHILD was absolutely hilarious. Just a fantastic touch- The comedy in this whole thing is just bloody golden. This is my new fave piece from you.
I think this might be my favorite Suffering animatic because of the details. She really does look like Penelope most of the time, and when her monstruous features are shown it's *such* a treat, like the claws and teeth. I loved how every time the siren speaks he's always looking at her, and the specific focus on his eyes and her lips when she says "he will chase you high and low", hinting at how he's just reading her lips. As well as the greek inspired imagery when Odysseus is telling her about how poseidon is chasing him. Also the little poses in "with giant waves and giant storms!" "oh no!" are so cute and silly.
I love the detail that you closed in on Odysseus eyes and put animation into “Penelope’s” lips when she was giving him the answers he needed, since his ears were blocked and he was reading her lips.

5: The close-up on Odysseus's eyes, followed by a close-up on the siren's mouth with exaggerated mouth movements, showing how he's reading her lips.
6: Using a starfish as a nail file, love it.
7: Both of them letting their masks slip, the siren with slightly transforming into her true form, and Odysseus getting annoyed when he's splashed.
Overall, it felt more cartoony than normal, but I feel like that just reflects the silliness of this song.

It's funny, you can actually see where gigi added little snippets of her tail under the surface!

i love how the daughter lowkey does look like telemachus, also kinda random but i really like the choice of colors, they help set the mood a lot, the blue/purple really helps sell the dreamy/fantasy vibe, then there's the style changing when Odysseuss is explaining the situation to the style for vases, and then the yellow for Penelope that changes to the purple/blue again but darker when she starts to talk about scylla and show her dangerous side
Maybe the sirens saw a random pic of the family but telemachus was so young and had enough "feminine" features for them to assume:
_screw it, it's a gal_
@@THATBrokeAroSpecWalletthey didn't have pictures in ancient greece, imo it's just how facts get distorted - while Scylla can look exactly like Penelope does, she actually doesn't know much about the family. Odysseus says things like "I prefer my feet on the ground" and that he's scared of the water, things which the real Penelope would definitely know aren't true. Similarly Scylla may only know that they have a child, but is unaware or falsely assumes it's a girl. She isn't all-knowing after all

Yep I noticed that too. Very Disney's "Hercules" vibes

YES, I love how playful the siren is in this animatic!
That "Oh no~!" at 1:22 is so cute xD The little theater of him explaining his questions is an adorable touch. The kinda-rap part being presented Kuzco-style is a highlight, love it!
I like how as “Penelope” is going on about Scylla, she slowly loses the disguise and playfulness, only to quickly put it back up at “Now jump in the water!”
Speaking of, I love the sort of bouncy, playful vibe of this one, and how it’s briefly cut off as Ody learns what he’ll have to do to get home.
The little distortions with the background hissing are really cool!
I love Sirenelope's twirls.
I love how the siren actually looks very friendly and cheery! As much as I love the type of siren where you can see a bit of slyness on their face, I also love this version, where she’s lying super well
He is ACTUALLY afraid of the water at the moment, because of Poseidon I love that
I feel like Odysseus's look of affection and longing when he first sees the siren, is real.
Such a warm illusion! The "daughter" just sitting there after being yoinked from its hiding spot was a neat detail.
THE LITTLE "oh no..." OF YOUR FAKELOPE WAS SO CUTEEEE
0:37 i love how the siren says daughter because sirens are only women
Jorge explained how their spell works, so it's cause since the information gets mixed up he has a son, but it's gets mixed so she said daughter
Gigi really saw how Suffering didn't have enough suffering in it so is now doing this 😭
THIS IS INCREDIBLE!

I love how Odysseus is always watching the siren as she talks. Surprisingly, that’s not something all the animatics have. But it’s such a great detail that does not go unnoticed here.
Gigi is just the CEO of epics animation now😂
I love how the "daughter" is animated like a lifeless stuffed animal with no change in expression or body movements other then being moved around by siren Penelope
I love her "Oh No" like "Can we just get this over with so I can eat dinner"
0:42
Love this smirk here, he's like "You think you're real clever, don't you?"
I LOVE the little sound waves coming off the Siren trying to use her song. It's subtle enough but still clearly there.
I love how the daughter is like a emotionless and lifeless puppet
Wait I just noticed that! It's like she just sits there, no happiness, no excitement, no emotion...
