After all, they remained in the no-crew ship proximity, and to me that doesn't sound like something a predator with humanlike intelligence would do if its objective is sneaking up on humans to feed. I won't be surprised if, like any other animal, they could have fed on anything and, like Circe and her nymphs, just wanted to be left alone.
If they wanted to be left alone, they wouldnt try and lure men from their boats. The Sirens are predators, but they didnt deserve the fate they received here.

You know, I don’t even think them killing the Sirens is what horrifies me, as you see their reasoning as to why they do it in the song. I think it’s Odysseus immediately going for the most brutal and inhumane option of killing them that horrifies me. There were multiple other ways they could’ve killed them off, but cutting off their tails and then throwing them back into the water, making them drown in what was once their home is just, so monstrous. And it makes you partially feel bad for the sirens because even though their monsters in their own right, Odysseus immediately choosing to cross that line is just, awful almost.
the sirens were actually cursed to die as soon as someone hears their song and lives. All they needed to do was tie someone to the mast and take out the wax, and then just leave, the sirens would die instantly
@@aguyontheinternet8436 There's nothing to indicate the sirens would die if someone heard their songs and lived. If anything it's the opposite, because when they asked to be spared Odysseus said 'why, so you can hunt the next group of travellers?' meaning they would live
From a director standpoint I love the way Odysseus stares them down. Especially when he says “scanning for information” like he was a predator stalking prey. Goose bumps!
He was chosen by Athena after all. He’s still got some cunning left in him, and in the end Athena realizes how stupid she’s been to remove him from her favor once he comes home at last and almost starts a war on Ithaca.
The sheer contrast between Sirenelope and the Siren's true form is WILD dude. They really look like horrific deep sea predators (like angler fish) and yet Odysseus is the most terrifying thing on the ship with the constant glowing glint in his eyes and his cold and subtle nature before his horrible anger at the Sirens.
Yes absolutely this is my favorite song and this has been my favorite animatic. Also I have been commenting on videos that we should officially try to make the name nelope Canon for siren Penelope
I love how brutal this is. The sight of the sirens having their tails cut off in the darkness, the look of fear in their eyes. You made Odysseus and the crew look like monsters, willing to do anything to get home. Also love the siren design. They look like they're from the depths of the ocean.
The important thing here is that they had already defeated the sirens, they could just leave. But at this point, they had so much hatred and vengeful feelings towards monsters and things that hunted them down, 12 years as Odysseus mentioned, that they craved bloody vengeance.
@@Anegor I mean, last time they defeated someone and left without killing them they lost like 556 men... I'd rather not take my chances tbh (although it was definitely cruel to get their tails cut off)

At least Ody had the mercy of granting her a quick death by beheading her or stabbing her heart as she wouldn't feel the pain of drowning in the sea as water filled her lungs. He could have given them a mercifull death by beheading them but chose not to.
@@claudialuquepazos2934 Exactly. And I hate to see how ppl just completely misinterpret this story at so many turns and justify wierd shit but demonize understandable actions
When it showed the crew throwing the sirens off the ship and two sirens were holding hands as they were sinking into the ocean. Just that small act of humanity really just made what happened more painful. Well done
Said this so many times, but so many people brought that detail up and you have to suffer with me realizing that Ody and the crew, when it was *their* turn to face death, just jumped at each others' throats instead
@@tumblingartist the sirens are the most mistreated creature in all of Epic (both by the main characters *and* the fandom): they could have been thrown in the sea bounded so the ship would have traveled far before they freed themselves, plus they *wouldn't have followed a ship going towards a monster even Poseidon is scared of* . Beside, Ody reasoning for killing them sounded more like a justification an animal hunter could come up with than a genuine motivation. EDIT: Athena kinda proved my point. Now the sirens will just get better at killing more people. Good job Ody.
@@13CheeseBurger Tbh I believe the sirens could have eaten sailors for the same reasons Circe fed them to others. After all, they remained in the abandoned ship proximity, which is weird if you just want to sneak up on another ship: that is clearly something that could have drawn suspicions, and this makes me consider the possibility they may have just wanted to be left alone. Beside, there is no guarantee Circe will stop killing sailors: she was going to kill Ody himself the moment she saw him, and if she keeps acting like that there is no way she knows if who she is turning into a pig "deserves" it or not. For what we know, the sirens may have also had unpleasant encounters with humans and they may have took the same kind of actions. Then why nobody argues letting Circe live? If the sirens killed for food, yes, you could say Ody was just protecting other members of his species and they weren't at fault for the sirens' beheaviour in the first place. It is still kind of a dick move, like killing animals so they don't endanger humans; but at least it holds some logic. However it's clear Ody cared more about its own safety, and this makes his "so you don't kill others" a not so heartfelt excuse anyway. Plus, is killing a single pack of sirens really that helpful when there are more of them? And don't humans cause much more casualties between each other anyway?
The sirens though- 🫢 I also love how menacing and angry Ody looks when talking with the sirens, just shows how much he’s done with all the crap he’s been through and would now do ANYTHING to make it home.

@@elski5958 Totally with you here. The crew was harsh with the sirens for their own "good" reasons, but I keep seeing the fandom almost just as harsh and for no reasons at all. They were animals trying to feed. Maybe. (Circe had no motif to turn men into pigs in the og, maybe the sirens were scared of sailors because... you know)
I love how the crew is represented. Also how Odysseus has to swish his captain's cape on to properly do a supervillain-style explanation of the his plan.
@@KrytenKoro I don't think definitions like sociopathic or serial killer could be applied to members a sentient species separated from human society. It would be like applying those terms to the inhabitants of the Americas cause they tried to kill the invading settlers, in the case they had also been biologically different from them and therefore maybe even went as far as ate them. That's a violently primitive and hostile beheaviour from a not integrated community, but not a that of a serial killer or a sociopathic. Plus, I doubt who-knows-how-many packs of Sirens could have sustained themselves exclusively on human flesh without causing much more frequent attacks than the one we saw, so they probably didn't even attack humans so frequently. My take is they couldn't have been a threat so much more recurring than sharks and other dangerous sea dwellers.
Dude you made Odysseus and his crew SO scary in this, I love it. "We are the man made beasts" indeed. Like even though the sirens arguably had it coming, you can't help but feel bad for them. I especially love the dynamic between Odysseus and the siren who was pretending to be Penelope. Her trying to swim away when he lassoes her, her trying to attack him in fury when Odysseus tells her they captured her friends (and then immediately getting restrained), Odysseus leaving her for last while his men kill everyone else (before presumably ending her himself)???? BRUTAL, and I love it so much.
Another interesting theory Ive seen pop up is that he lets the Penelope siren live on purpose. It honestly would seem just as fitting to me, as we see that she seems to care for the other Sirens. And it would definitely parralel the whole thing where Oddesyus is becoming more like Posidien. Both would be leaving a leader alive while slaughtering their crew/group, in order to influct more pain on them then simply killing them.
I mean, the extra pettiness is understandable. That siren in particular was impersonating his beloved wife who he desperately wants to see again. She dangled false hope in front of him with the intention of killing him once he reached out to take it. Odysseus at this point is just full-on done with immortals screwing with him, so really the lead siren pulled this at the worst possible time imaginable.
They didnt have it coming any more than a lion has it coming for hunting a gazelle By this logic, Polites and the rest of the crew "had it coming" for hurting Polyphemus' sheep
This version really dose capture the whole 'Man made monster' aspect of the song. I've already talked about how morally grey this whole situation is, but this one REEAALLY makes you lean more towards the sirens. Yes, they are Monsters, creatures that WOULD HAPPILY kill more people if they were released, as Ody bluntly states, but that still somehow dosent excuse the fact that he is still killing creatures with the same level of consciousness and intellect as a regular human being, and evidently, as depicted by this animatic, the same emotional capacity. It truly makes you feel the weight of what Ody is doing, and its horrible, but beautifully done. I have thought that this song is Ody finally releasing all the pent of rage he's stored from his travels, thus choosing such a needlessly cruel execution. He could has simply, just said "cut of their heads" instead, and this scene would be far less heart wrenching. Because at least their deaths would be quick. Merciful. But whats that done for him so far...? So he lets them feel all the pain he has felt. All the loss. The terror. Everything. In his eyes now, this is mercy, because ruthlessness, is mercy upon ourselves. Simply fantastic work.
Ody killed another living beings to prevent them from killing other sailors. Sirens killed sailors to survive, to feed. Odysseus has made the same mistake beforehand which lead to his decision here. The sirens knew his name, or at least that he was married to Penelope so it wouldn't be hard to find the rest. Poseidon has came to hunt Ody for his mistake. The sirens aren't as powerfull as Poseidon, they most likely wouldn't have been a threat to him further on. Odysseus learnt from his past mistakes without giving the sirens a chance to do the same. While the sirens didn't have such crucial mistakes before, and even if they did they still have to get food somehow.
@@darkwolf9536 I don't think Sirenelope actually knew Ody super well. The way Sirens work is that their song makes you see the people you love the most (or I guess the women you love the most). Suffering keeps the siren's disguise up to hide the beeswax thing, to show Ody playing along, but Sirenelope doesn't say anything super specific that would prove her as Penelope, she kept it broad (honestly, the "daughter" was a pretty big risk to throw out there), not to mention the "fear of the water" lie working on her.
@@ethanrose9682 Yeah, but that means they knew the identity of Penelope, and since Odysseus literally says "You are no WIFE of mine" The sirens know that Penelope is his wife. So it wouldn't be the hardest thing to find where he lives
@@darkwolf9536 No, what I'm saying is that the illusion was just "this sailor's wife." Ody saw through it because of the beeswax, but for the viewer, actively listening to Sirenelope sing, we see the illusion meant for Ody. The "Penelope" at the beginning was background music, not actually sung by the Siren. She acted like Ody's wife, in general, without knowing who his wife was for sure. The sirens had no dirt on Ody, the illusion is just the magic working as intended.
His words are to make the Sirens understand one thing. They have endured so much shit from monsters, that they have no mercy left in their heart. It explains to them exactly the horrors they've been through.
This version really emphasizes the cruelty and villainy from the siren’s POV, it’s so cool. Like I was kinda uncomfortable when Odysseus grabbed her mouth like that lmao😭 fits the whole monster motif tho
I'm in love with how you've just brought out how Ody is becoming the "Man Made Monster" this whole animatic made me shiver with how Purely Cold Ody was being with the Sirens. Especially Siren Penelope, saving her for last just to let it sink in
I love how your portrayed Odysseus throughout this. The white coloration of his eyes you set up in "Scylla" to signify his new monstrous nature, combined with his sadistic expressions is just perfect!
This is actually a lot more depicted in the tail cutting scene than any other animatics I've seen. I love it. It's so haunting, daunting, and terrifying hearing the song and watching the panel of the trail of sierns' tails move to transition to the siern's and then Oddysseus's eyes is amazing.
First animatic, I think, that did "spare us" in the exact pose that I pictured when listening to the song. Not to mention combining thematic aspects from other animatics. Like Sirenelope not initially being on the ship and her getting lassoed in. The siren's getting held in nets and the sirens kneeling on deck. Also, having her see her whole crew die. And at the same time, having her die. Most animations don't do all of these. They choose one or the other. This managed to hit every beat. And it made sense
I don't know what's more scary, seeing the sirens seeing the humans as monsters, the part where two sirens are holding hands as they drown showing their deep bond, or the fact that you can hear them screaming in the background as they are being dismembered and drowning
Big fan on the sirens’ beastly looks vs Odysseus and his mens’ beastly imagery and behavior Also props to you for actually SHOWING how they cut the sirens’ tails, haunting stuff
I love the angler designs on the sirens and how Odysseus starts having this glint in his eyes to having just pitch black pupils with no light whatsoever!!!
I love that in this animatic, Odysseus makes the siren that posed as his wife WATCH as they kill and drown her friends she had with her before then killing her, he saved her for last because she posed as the one he truly loves, so therfore got the see her friends in pain and suffering before she was finally killed too. And if you noticed too, they only threw their bodies over board, we don't see their tails being thrown in the water, so that line "We are a different beast now, we are the ones who feast now", since they have been without food for a while it's safe to assume they probably ate their tails because technically their tails are just fish, so it's edible to them
this is an amazing animatic, great job. 3:21 i just want to point out Odysseus in the siren's eye looks like hes got a massive chin and his mouth / nose are just squished next to his eyes and i can't stop laughing at that idea lol.
My favourite song finally animated! Also the detail of Oddysseus eyes becoming monstrous like in Scylla while taking the sirenes captive, amazing work!
I love the idea that Odysseus is the one to kill Siren Penelope. It's personal. It's ruthless and mimics Poseidon making Odysseus watch as his crew gets slaughtered. Siren Penelope gets to watch as her friends have their tails cut off and are tossed back to sea. Then Ody finishes the job himself, just like Poseidon would have had Odysseus not opened the wind bag again. Truly, Odysseus is the monster, rawr rawr rawr.
Love how this animatic does very little sugar coating and shows how truly f***ed up this situation is. When listening to the album alone you can get caught up in the “hehe this is a bop” mindset and not truly grasp how Odysseus is mutilating and slowly killing these weeping creatures EN MASS. But when it’s visualized like THIS, it really hits you.
I always thought that what Ody did was brutal. It probably did save other sailors, but sirens were all just trying to get food. And the sirens looked like they were trying to protect each other. Siren Penelope especially. The other sirens were somewhat hiding behind her, and the siren on her right looked scared, and was even gently holding her arm. Siren Penelope seemed to be somewhat the one protecting them all. Edit: holy crap the amount of paragraphs in this comment section is insane- Edit 2: I realized that a couple people are calling me a guy, so I just wanna clear up that I identify as she/her
So he probably decided to kill them because the events of the story. He probably killed them in such a horrific and ironic way for the audacity of pretending to be his wife.

This was really good! It was great that you showed how the Sirens were captured and how Odysseus manage to get the lead one onto the ship with the others. Also I loved the expressions everyone had in it from the menacing face that Odysseus had when he was being ruthless, to how the crew looked monstrous to the sirens when they were captured to the look of horror on the sirens. It all really sold what was happening in the story, and I liked how the scenes led from one to another in a seamless and connected way.
Oh when Odysseus says to cut off their tails he means cut them fully in half. Truly cold blooded. The part where the sirens beg for their lives gave me chills. The subtle head shake and expressions on Odysseus’s face as he refuses were nice. Great siren design beautiful expressions. Very chilling and visceral. ❤

I like how when Odysseus gives the order to cut off the Sirens tails you can see them about to cry because they know they wouldn’t survive. It’s like being chained to a metal ball and thrown to the bottom of the ocean you wouldn’t be able to breathe.
Anyone else notice that as if to add insult to injury, sirenelope is the last to die and by Odysseus’s hand. She could’ve been considered the leader of the pack, and she was forced to watch those she cared about die when she was supposed to feed and protect them.
I love how through out Odysseus’s ruthless arc his eyes have changed to a silver color this is shown in their “Monster” animatic and their “Scylla” animatic!
Ah i love the duality of the song, and the art made it perfect You know the sirens have killed countless people, and quite literally tried to trick the crew, but still... Cutting off their tails so that they can't swim and letting them drown instead of just instantly killing them? Yeah that's what makes the crew monsters. (The art is amazing!!! AHHH!!)
Man... this short haired siren is tragically cute, she crying when she hear what they want to do we her and when they surrounded her before, she put her hand on fake Penelope when they snatched them like she was terrifying, and lastly she was holding her hand to other siren when she drowned like she wasn't want to die alone. IDK why but she so cute and so dangerous in the same time
As much as I loved the attention that smaller animators have been getting, I was _so_ excited to see this song animated by someone I know and love. Different Beast has so much amazing potential and, I was surprised so few people were taking advantage of it! Thank you for this beautifully terrifying art :)
Damn the visuals really make me feel bad for the sirens, because just like Odi they where just trying to survive. Like ofc what they're doing seems evil to us but they have just as much emotion as us, which really shows when they're thrown overboard and the two where holding hands in fear. You outdid yourself with this one Ximena
This animatic for some reason just- made me realize how dark this song is. Yes, the sirens have killed many many sailors, but they're doing what it takes to survive. And in turn, so is Odysseus and his crew. And eye for an eye, really. But this whole animatic is just like...so scary to me for some reason. Odysseus looks so menacing, amazing job!!

3:21 I love the way you had Odysseus personally kill the siren that impersonated Penelope, he didn’t care who killed the other sirens, but for him this was personal
love the last sequence being in black and white to make it distinguishable from the other purple scenes! the body language is so well done and the sirens getting their tails cut off was genuinely chilling especially as some in the bg hold hands as they are thrown in. great work!!!
I started listening to this series a while back because i heard "Survive" on TikTok. And since then i started learning more about the story and watching Odysseus grow as a person through each song and album that gets released. And once this song got released, hearing how ruthless hes become brought tears of pain anger and joy. I love this series and im so happy and appreciative of all the amazing animators who have brought their own way if story telling to this series. Well done, absolutely well done! ❤️
I see both sides. Ody lost men because he was being kind and sparing lives, what if he spared the sirens, its true they'd just kill more. Think of it as if you were Ody you saw your men die, Athena said he will understand why you need to kill them, she warned him not to spare them. He lost so many men, his best friend and himself. But the sirens need to eat they do this to feed themselves.
I'm a big fan of the decision to make sure during the man-made monster verse we only ever see Odysseus with one eye, driving home how he's now behaving like a monstrous creature like the cyclops in killing without mercy
I love how this animation doesn’t shy away from the fact that, yeah, Odysseus acts like an absolute monster. The way he talks to and touches the lead siren, how terrifying this must have been for them. this also really emphasizes the fact that like ody, the siren was leading a group of people and attempting to keep them alive. It was, in effect (affect?) Odysseus’ crew vs the sirens. Actually a crazy parallel the more I think about it considering in less than (idk what I assume to be) a week, all of Odysseus’ men will be slaughtered by the king of beasts (ik that’s not Zeus title but it works with the metaphor). I need to write an essay on this musical Jesus
Cutting off the tails distracts the other sirens, and sends a message to leave the boats alone. It was brutal but effective. The irony of them drowning when they’ve done it to so many others feels like karma
What other sirens? If there's other sirens in the area, they would have attacked already, wouldn't they? And why wouldn't just killing them send that message, why make them die tortuously to warn others off?. The method of killing was cruelty with no point but revenge, that's what makes Odysseus a "monster".
This was so good!! I absolutely love how you perceive the siren's emotions and carry out the facial expressions of the crew and Ody! Absolutely stunning!! Good job for real! I hope Jay sees this animatic, it's so good!

@@loonelytoon6523 He explained why he killed them though, they wouldve just tried the same act with the next crew that passed by
@@13CheeseBurger Tbh I believe the sirens could have eaten sailors for the same reasons Circe fed them to others.

That's a violently primitive and hostile beheaviour from a not integrated community, but not a that of a serial killer or a sociopathic. Plus, I doubt who-knows-how-many packs of Sirens could have sustained themselves exclusively on human flesh without causing much more frequent attacks than the one we saw, so they probably didn't even attack humans so frequently. My take is they couldn't have been a threat so much more recurring than sharks and other dangerous sea dwellers.
0:44 the look on Odysseus's face when telling the siren that her friends were captured is absolutely chilling! So good!
@@aperson3996 That makes the song so much more brutal 😭
@@aperson3996 That's even worse, I didn't even think of that omg
I mean, the extra pettiness is understandable. That siren in particular was impersonating his beloved wife who he desperately wants to see again. She dangled false hope in front of him with the intention of killing him once he reached out to take it. Odysseus at this point is just full-on done with immortals screwing with him, so really the lead siren pulled this at the worst possible time imaginable.
They didnt have it coming any more than a lion has it coming for hunting a gazelle
By this logic, Polites and the rest of the crew "had it coming" for hurting Polyphemus' sheep

@@darkwolf9536 No, what I'm saying is that the illusion was just "this sailor's wife." Ody saw through it because of the beeswax, but for the viewer, actively listening to Sirenelope sing, we see the illusion meant for Ody.

And if you noticed too, they only threw their bodies over board, we don't see their tails being thrown in the water, so that line "We are a different beast now, we are the ones who feast now", since they have been without food for a while it's safe to assume they probably ate their tails because technically their tails are just fish, so it's edible to them

You know the sirens have killed countless people, and quite literally tried to trick the crew, but still... Cutting off their tails so that they can't swim and letting them drown instead of just instantly killing them? Yeah that's what makes the crew monsters.

Man... this short haired siren is tragically cute, she crying when she hear what they want to do we her and when they surrounded her before, she put her hand on fake Penelope when they snatched them like she was terrifying, and lastly she was holding her hand to other siren when she drowned like she wasn't want to die alone. IDK why but she so cute and so dangerous in the same time

Jigsaw would have liked this kind of irony
This was so good!!
I absolutely love how you perceive the siren's emotions and carry out the facial expressions of the crew and Ody! Absolutely stunning!!
Good job for real! I hope Jay sees this animatic, it's so good!
I love how the siren pretending to be Penelope is kinda like the leader as seen in 0:52 where 1 siren is holding onto the siren Penelope.
It’s kind of like the relationship between Circe and her nymphs
im goddamn OBSESSED with how the last segment of the animatic is drawn like its a frickin horror film!!
