You can LITERALLY see the change in his eyes as he comes to accept he has to become a monster to be able to get back home. The absolute chills as he talks about the Cyclops with the imagery of the dead sheep, Circe and her injured nymph, the rage of poseidon then Odysseus himself dropping the baby. God this was beautiful!

I love this version of Monster because it doesn't have some kind of metaphorical monster shown, it actually shows Odysseus truly choosing to become the monster.
The fact that in his flashback it is just an armed Soldier that drops the infant and not a depiction of himself, shows that he cant accept or will not acknowledge the fact that it was him who dropped the infant. But when he accepts becoming the monster and says he would do it again, it is him who drops it, because he accepted this side or the need to be ruthless to get home.
I swear..everytime i see an animatic to this musical or just hear the lyrics I find new parallels and easter eggs and i absolutely love it. It is heartbreaking… but i love it.
Singing without seeing his mouth moving is so awesome!!! Made me think of Prince of Egypt and a couple Disney movies

My favorite interpretation of this song is that he has two options.
Either he doesn't become a monster, greets the world with open arms, keeps his morality, and never makes it back to Ithaca, perhaps Eurylochus would get home instead.
But if he throws everything away, Imbraces being a monster and kills everything in his way (Different Beast, Mutiny) he gets home, but the Odysseus who got back to Ithaca is changed because he is no longer himself (No Longer You).
Either way the man who left for war twenty years ago isn't the man who returns
It's why I feel the prophet was so powerful. He wasn't saying "I won't help you." he was saying "the you that currently exists, cannot survive in this world. If i help you, the you you know. Won't exist." the flaw in the prophet and the gods view was. None of them (other than ares) WANT the monster, but by constantly challenging odyssus, they are CREATING the monster. It shows the flaws of the gods.
Zues used his almighty power because a sun god asked him to. Adding another challenge and loss.
Athena Was the goddess of DEFENSIVE wars, but when defense goes offensively, it has to sacrifice justice
Circe literally sings "maybe one act of kindness, will make a kinder world." Yet by not doing more, that act of kindness just bred a monster
When the gods FINALLY get a chance, to prevent the monster, to prevent everything. They ask athena to make a god game. I like this depiction of the gods because you can SEE the reason their pantheon fell, you can SEE why eventually other options became more desierable and why their power languished and eventually was made moot. Their own ruthlessness and the monsters they kept creating destroyed them. Hence why in the future gods became "merciful, loving, caring, kind without any chance of brutality." the greek gods made so no one will ever worship a spiteful vengeful god. I love that depiction because again, as this song shows, they learned to be cold and ruthless, but never learned the lession Odyssus says to Athena "Mercy is a skill."
@@Leannerose29 One problem, the Gods clearly _want_ the monster. The monster that he becomes is what Athena wanted, it's what Poseidon prefers, because then Polyphemus would've had a glorious end rather than a life of shame.
They don't want to prevent the monster, they would've preferred him being one to begin with. They wanted him to learn his lesson, which he ultimately does and makes it home.
The Gods want him to be "ruthless" or "to be the monster" and it's clearly and constantly said, so much I'm confused how you missed it. It's the entire point behind "Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves".
The Gods are never without kindness, but they are also never without ruthlessness. It's a false dichotomy to think you can't be both.
And to act like they were replaced by a "merciful, loving, caring" god, when the one that replaced the Greco-Roman pantheon was more brutal than any other is kind of hilarious.

Not gonna lie, when he was imagining himself throwing another baby down to its death, determined to do it to return to his family, yet still his hands shook and his face was full of grief, I teared up. Such an amazing visual. He's forcing himself to be the monster, thinking that's what he needs to be for him and his men to survive, yet it goes against all that he is. Even the thought of it is enough to fundamentally destroy him, but still he will do it. For Penelope and Telemachus.
Also, the image of Polites smiling so brightly only for the Cyclops's eye to open right behind him is gonna haunt me. Kudos!

Finally! Someone shows that 2:55 Odysseus it just yelling in anger or with a grumpy face, that cry of "So what if I'm the monster?!" is the cry of a hero that snapped, the cry of a good person realizing the world is cold, it's a cry of hysteria. it hurts him, he doesn't want to be the monster, but he sees no other way to get home.

Just came back from the Scylla animation and the foreshadowing at 3:00 with the fact he’s making the same face that he does when Scylla (a monster) tells him “you and I are the same” and then in this song “so what if I’m the monster” is so
I swear to all that is sacred, i mean this with no disrespect. The sound of off key-ness (in my opinion) somehow makes this creation beautfully hilarious and tickles all of my funny bone. Its so on point in a way that is faithful, but just off enough to make me have this be my hunger anthem

I will admit, I wasn't a big fan of your work, but your Underworld Saga animations have won me over. All of them are so well done. The action shot of Odysseus running from Poseidon's hand into the next scene is my favorite part of this one.

I love how every time The Chorus sings “Monster,” in every song it’s brought up, not just this one, there’s always a subtle accusatory tone/inflection. Like Odysseus already sees himself as a monster.
I'm going to throw myself out the window, every time I click on a Monster animmatic I know I'm going to watch this man lose his humanity in the most artistic and beautiful way possible and yet you guys still surprise me.

I like how his mouth wasn't moving in the beginning! It shows that the reflection and change was happening within and everything he was thinking about is inside him. I also really like the souls of the underworld pointing at him and saying: Monster Monster Monster. He knows and they know what he's become. Overall, amazing animatic!! :) 💙
I saw someone comment that what Odysseus doesn't get even after this song about what Poseidon said is that when he says Ruthlesness is mercy upon ourselves, is ONLY upun ourselves. That's what happens to the crew. Odysseus became Ruthless, and Ruthlesness is mercy only upon ourselves and as such only he returns home.
