    I think what I love most about this Scylla design is how the false “lady” Scylla isn’t ‘pretty’ and how it sloughs back to reveal the central head. It brings to mind an anglerfish dangling a lure and- because the humanoid form is a bit creepy itself and not traditionally beautiful- it makes it feel even more like “something inhuman and monstrous that is imitating without understanding”. It’s top tier creature design

    I like how when Eurylochus says "I'm so sorry", Odysseus is facing where Scylla is in the water, implying that he has spotted her and knows she's coming. So Odysseus' response to the apology is making up his mind to sacrifice his men to allow the rest to pass safely (or perhaps making peace with that choice, since he is the one to announce that this is the lair of Scylla, showing that he knows he's leading his men into a monster den so he should've thought of this solution before entering)
    Likewise, now knowing (or confirming) that Eurylochus is the one who opened the bag, Odysseus also keeps Scylla's presence a secret and doesn't tell Eurylochus why they need to ignite 6 torches. Because the last time he revealed even a little bit of what he has (ie the wind bag), he got betrayed by his men who did not trust in him enough and believed they knew better than him.
    It's like that event has cemented that he is not trusted by his men, so he has no obligation to trust them back. But he is also still their captain and still holds the duty to bring them back home. Just as it was his duty as a soldier to go to war, even when he did not want to. Which are similar conditions that led Odysseus to do the Trojan Horse scheme, ravage Troy, and kill the baby. In the end, it feels like it's the same desperation and tiredness as the war that made him a mythic figure, just different location.

    • @lazykcdoodler
      @lazykcdoodler 2 месяца назад +579

      @victoriacastillo3978 Scylla always starts off as a beautiful naiad, but her origin has 2 popular versions:
      1. Poseidon had an eye on her, but his wife Amphitrite was jealous and poisoned Scylla's spring, turning her into a monster, or
      2. Circe was jealous of Scylla bc the guy she liked- Glaucus- liked Scylla more. So Circe poured a potion into the sea water where Scylla was bathing, turning her into a monster.
      Option 2 is more commonly adapted these days, due to the Circe-Odysseus connection tieing in thematically well with how the mistakes and punishments of the Greek pantheon family end up rebounding worst on to the mortals and heroes who have to deal with it

    • @fallen_star2319
      @fallen_star2319 2 месяца назад +191

      @lazykcdoodler Option 2 fits better overall with what is also known of Poseidon an Amphritite, as well. Not that she isn't Hera, but... Poseidon has the most known sired children in Greek mythology for a reason. And honestly, given that Amphritite is the goddess of safety and protection on the seas, her characterization in mythology has always struck m as busy taking care of others and fine with Poseidon not drowning them, even if it meant he was fucking something lse.

    - The colours shifting as they enter the cave (and exiting)
    - Eurylochus reaching for his sword when he feels the boat shudder
    - That nice shot of the contrasting purple and red
    - The gill-like rib cages scylla has
    -The disembodied hand still holding the torch (thats terrifying)
    - The moment that Eurylochus realised that she's aiming for the torches.

    For some reason, Scylla being an Eel like monster makes so much sense! Cause she lives in this narrow rocky passage and eels usually hide in cramped rocky spaces like cracks and crevices and then attack their prey from there. Eels are also nocturnal and have poor eyesight, which may be why Scylla would specifically go for the torches, which are more visible. And eels hunt in packs by swimming in large circles around groups of fish, like scylla dances while circling the ship (Feel free to correct me on anything. I just really like the concept of eel Scylla)
    Edit: I know there's a bunch of people that depicted Scylla with eel heads, but most of them focused more on her human characteristics, this version feels more eel like to me, which I love. (But honestly, i like any version of Scylla. Yay creativity and having your own original concept for something!!)

    • @mindsendStoryweaver
      @mindsendStoryweaver Месяц назад +15

      It also makes sense since Scylla traditionally hunts from the rocks with the 'dog heads' coming from her middle...
      Either those 'dog heads' are eels (Cause many people call them puppies and they're constantly opening and closing their mouths like barking dogs) OR they were inspired by sealions/seals, and the Eels make more sense since eels hunt from the rocks while seals rest there and go swimming into the open ocean to hunt and may have several cohabitating a crevasse, plus eels can bolt out and grab things without leaving the rocks much easier than dogs OR seals/sealions due to being long and snakelike.

    • @donnguyen1107
      @donnguyen1107 Месяц назад +2

      Also the eel like snakey hydra kinda look was pretty much what Homer originally gave for description in his writing. Later guys like Ovid gave her the half woman with dogs at her waist plus her curse origin story.
      I’ve also heard she may have been inspired by giant squids and octopuses whose tentacles can resemble snakes to an untrained eye and act kinda like snakes and the fact octopuses snatch prey from caves and holes in rocks.

    • @donnguyen1107
      @donnguyen1107 Месяц назад +3

      The dog part is mostly from Homer saying she makes sounds like a dog rather than having actual dog parts and looking it up the dog part might come from “skylax” which is probably where her name comes from meaning “dogfish” or “dog shark” aka shark. Which makes sense since she’s also mentioned to have 3/many sets or rows of teeth like a shark

    -The birds, specifically the crows and vultures fearing the corpses of the guy ship there.
    -The many MANY skulls riddled around the cave. However the cave is probably dark so the crew doesn’t see or notice them just yet
    -The blood. There is blood stains all over the walls of the cave you see. Due to the many other people Scylla ate.
    -The Smell, the fact one of the crew members is plugging their nose because of the smell, the biggest sign this lair is marked for death.
    -The structure of the cave looks like a teeth as the ship moves closer into the cave it’s like the cave is eating the ship, like Scylla is about to do to the crew
    -Finally Odysseus himself. His lack of a reaction to anything. A lot of the crew looks worried and unnerved but Odysseus remains compassed to an alarming degree. Only reacting until he learns about the bag even then that is brief. His guilt is eating him away so he mentally shuts himself off so he can what has to be done.

    Things I liked:
    1) The sun setting down with the lyrics
    2) The crew’s expression when he starts talking. “Oh boy here we go” they say.
    3) Switching to Scyllas’s vision and seeing what she sees is cool.
    4) Not seeing Scylla after leaving her lair but her voice still carries out the final line.

    For the gods! This is the best version of Scylla I have ever seen, from her “human appearance” that terrifies and disturbs A LOT, to her “true way” that will give me nightmares.
    The movements she makes while she is killing the crew, not only for devouring and taking the price offered by Odysseus, but she is dancing because she is enjoying it.
    These details make Scylla really a real monster.

    In the mythos, many argue that Scylla is little more than a natural calamity, devoid of any rhyme or reason which has always struck me as extremely cruel fate and punishment for what is essentially not her fault - being extremely beautiful to the point Cerci got jealous of her beauty. This depiction is Scylla is in odd contrast with the mythos, but also somehow more disturbing (at least to me), very good job.
