I saw Ian Gillan in the London production in the 70’s when I was a kid and I’ve been obsessed with this musical ever since. So powerful, so many great songs.
Ian Gillan has never appeared in the theatre production. As per his own statements he was too busy with his band to even consider theatre or cinema appearances in JCS.
I remember hearing this for the first time with tears pouring down my face when the album came out. Ian’s voice conveyed the agony of Christ as no one else could. Sublime
It was weird, doing highschool supposedly x ian but with jewish name, BAHURIM, and teachers. The movie was shown in our aula and Rob Hartkamp , ourBiology teacher that ignored Darwin came in said it was blasphemy.
It seems like no one who replicated this understood why the high g note works. They just do a falsetto and show off. The note itself isn't the key ingredient, it's the raw passion with which it's delivered.
Actually in singing, passion is the enemy of high notes. The key is to look and sound passionate. But if you feel that passion the note will go SPLAT all over the place. Just look at everyone in Lindsay Ellis' video who has veins in their necks. If your neck is tense, there's NO way that note is coming out. But plenty have tried to force it. Nils Isberg hit the nail on the head, this is almost a whistle tone. No idea how he's making it. But it sure is amazing.
Truly the best version of Gethsemane. I listened to this rock opera and felt the emotion and passion in this album that brought me closer to Jesus as a man. Good stuff!

Gives me goosebumps. The original London cast recording is one of the greatest albums of all time, among all genres, and is a masterpiece. And to think that Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music when he was only 16. Insane
I am always astounded by Gillan's performance here. It's too bad a better version either doesn't exist or You Tube has no other recording-- when the song and his lips go awry, at the pinnacle of the song, it's just distracting. I just read today that Gillan was asked to play Jesus in the film version, but insisted if he joined the cast that his band receive a salary too, as they would have to stop touring. Ted Neely was chosen instead. I wonder what trajectory Ian Gillan's life would have taken if he had starred in the film?? Although Neely seemed born the play the role, and was magnificent!! In any case, Ian is a stellar musician in every sense of the word. Peace to all in 2023.. 🕊🕊🕊
2024 and just heard this version for the first time. Awesome!! I always loved JCS, ever since it was released. Seen it a couple of times, in Sweden and Italy. Nobody does this better than Ian Gillan!
Could Ian Gillian be ANY more talented? The voice of Deep Purple, as well as that brief stint in Black Sabbath, the solo career, and other projects...the ultimate, consummate rock singer!! Those high notes still gives me chills...and the ORIGINAL Jesus in this masterpiece!!
I have early onset dementia.(I'm 61 years old). I can barely walk due to bad knees. Put yourself in my situation, and re listen to the lyrics. Welcome to my life. This is in no way a complaint. I've had a helluva ride.
Came across this having just seen an excellent local production of JCS. Never heard Gillan singing this - but oh boy! Talk about understanding the assignment! Absolute perfection, just as he was at his peak with Deep Purple. I remember being blown away the first time I heard Child in Time. For him his falsetto is just part of his natural voice and he uses it to express emotion, not as a "look at what I can do" moment like so many do. Brilliant. Blows established Broadway performers out of the water.
Пытался Дима Билан на проекте "Призрак оперы" У меня даже родилась эпиграмма : "При очевидной схожести фамильной Легко понять где правда, где обман. Когда поёт - то всем понятно : Гиллан, А если воет - ясно всем : Билан."
A Brilliant performance, no wonder Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber wanted Ian for the voice of Jesus, every word heard clearly... A showstopping performance .....

I would strongly recommend that you listen to the whole original version. @Dirk Diggler nah man, it's clear that this was written for someone with the power of Ian Gillian, Neely just doesn't have that, Neely did the stage version better than Gillian could've ever done because he's not an actor, but in terms of raw power of the voice, which is such a fundamental aspect of Gethsemane, Gillian stands head and shoulders above Neely
@Dirk Diggler Dude, Ian was not in the film because he's not an actor. Trust me man, you don't want to do this divine argument, you first have to prove that God exists and then you have to prove that God wants this, the world doesn't work that way.
@@pillowprincess3673 I was indeed born for this role. No but I get it, it's perfectly fine to prefer Neely honestly, Gillan was not an actor after all, it's only logical to want those visuals, that instrumental break around two thirds in hits so hard in the movie because it shows those paintings and it shows Neely being upset and stuff. I wouldn't argue his voice is nearly as powerful as Gillan, not against Neely, Gillan is just THAT powerful. I feel like it perfectly works for Gethsemane, it got me way more into JCS than the movie ever dit honestly
I think in versions like Ted Neeley and Steve Balsamo you can feel the sadness, confusion and anger of Jesus.. Ian is very good vocally, but in this video he's singing the song, not playing Jesus

Rob Halford is awesome. Definitely in my top 5. Gillan didn't take care of himself obviously but if he had things would probably have been different. In his prime he couldn't be touched.
@@scientificdevil4672 Yeah, just saying. Its not his fault, but even after the reunion in the 80s I wasnt really a fan of his voice. I think thats one reason Ritchie wanted him out. He got Coverdale and then left to get Dio.

It's a human story, the suffering of a man. There is no question of Jesus' humanity. The tragedy is all too human.
The big question is divinity. Was he divine ? Personally I doubt it. Undoubtedly Jesus had his fans, but just because people say things like Eric Clapton is God, it doesn't mean that three days after his future death, Eric Clapton will appear to his bereft fans in a locked room.
Or maybe....

It seems like no one who replicated this understood why the high g note works. They just do a falsetto and show off. The note itself isn't the key ingredient, it's the raw passion with which it's delivered.
ThejollyFrenchman BINGO!
BINGO!
The amazing thing is that his high G isn't just a G, his vibrato is so wide that it sounds like he's almost doing a tremolo between a G and a B-flat!!
@@nilsisberg5445 Haha nice one!

Gives me goosebumps. The original London cast recording is one of the greatest albums of all time, among all genres, and is a masterpiece. And to think that Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music when he was only 16. Insane
The Australian cast from '72 comes close, with John English and Trevor white
I am always astounded by Gillan's performance here. It's too bad a better version either doesn't exist or You Tube has no other recording-- when the song and his lips go awry, at the pinnacle of the song, it's just distracting.
I just read today that Gillan was asked to play Jesus in the film version, but insisted if he joined the cast that his band receive a salary too, as they would have to stop touring. Ted Neely was chosen instead.
I wonder what trajectory Ian Gillan's life would have taken if he had starred in the film?? Although Neely seemed born the play the role, and was magnificent!!

Ian Gilan's version of Gethsame is the best there was, best that ever will be.
The power of Neely pales in comparison to Gillian though, but Neely is a good stage singer anyway
