Ted figured into one of my most perfect days…I was 15 years old (so spring 1972)…skipped school with a friend, took the train into NYC, had my first drink in a bar (I was 15, but the bartender never even glanced at us as he poured the beers) and then caught a matinee of JCS at the Mark Hellinger Theatre. Ted was otherworldly as Jesus! I’m nearly 67 and remember it like it was yesterday! Glorious….

Agreed. One of the greatest evils perpetrated by Christianity was to teach that humanity is worthless without the intercession of "God." God did not write or sing this: people created it. It is called "art," and humans have been creating it for thousands of years- and not because of divine intercession. I fact, I think the creative urge is a direct response to a universe where we are on our own, free and unhindered to do great things (or not), so that we will be remembered, or forgotten. What's more inspiring- to imagine some all-powerful being humming this tune for Andrew Lloyd Webber to copy, or ALW just sitting at a keyboard and dreaming it all up? I too am an atheist, and I have come to appreciate this music far more than I ever did when I was a "believer."

When I was 11, in Communist Romania, the chief of the police in the village saw my grandmother with a bible in her hands and got very mad.... He kept cussing at her for half an hour, yelling some of the most atrocious words one can find in our language. He didn't care we (her grandchildren, aged 5-12) were with her and heard all that. At some point he asked her: "What if, when you die, you realize there is no God, and no Jesus, and that you have wasted your life believing in something that's not real?!?!" I was only 11 but I remember her words, still ... (I did not understand much then, but when I did, I realized what a strong woman she was. I want to believe I have some of her strength)... She replied: " If when I die I happen to learn there is no God and no Jesus, I can still pat myself on the back, because I did only good things in the name of what I believed!!!! Can you say the same thing?!?!" I have never seen a more frightened creature as that police chief when he heard my grandmother's words! Years later, when the 1989 Romanian Revolution removed Ceausescu's regime, the same man, still in charge, left the village in the middle of the night with just his family and a few personal effects... We haven't heard of him until last year. He passed away from COVID, in great pain, asking God to have mercy on him...

Going hard for god then falling back down getting back up and fall again. I was feeling weak and tired. I pray in tounges ALOT! I got to a point where I was so confused about everything or if what I was doing was right . I prayed to God to give me a fruitful mind that he understand me that I’m not alone in feeling the way I do and to restore my faith I need a sign! I pulled up google voice translator and prayed in tounges shortly and briefly. It translated to “why should I die song” I googled the song and this was the first video that popped up. I slowly backed away from my phone with my hands covering my mouth as I smiled and laughed. I could feel my faith being restored in that moment . I’m not saying google voice can translate tounges I prayed for this particular thing and was desperate . I think God knew that. 🤷‍♀️

It's not just his voice and way he sings this song (I love Ian Gillan's original too, but Neeley's compels raw emotions), it's his magnetic looks too that sell the whole pack. You can 100% buy that this person would be a charismatic leader that would easily find followers, and not necessarily in a religious way. Absolute perfect casting.

I have watched this movie since it came out in '72 and it was more emotional than you can imagine. In a documentary, the director said when making this scene for the movie, he wanted to tie a rope around Ted so when he climbed up these boulders, Ted would be safe. Ted said, no way, and started climbing as the speakers around him started blasting this song as he climbed and sang. I was lucky enough to see the play, which also starred Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson, and got backstage to meet Ted. The next day I met him and Carl Anderson backstage in their dressing rooms and Ted gave me a personal tour of the stage and props, along with stories from the time he was in Israel making the movie. It was an experience I will never forget. He can sing that song today as well as he did back then. Thank you Ted, and RIP dear Carl Anderson.

I saw this film when it came out in a theater in Amarillo, TX. I was 13 years old. Already awestruck by Neely's extraordinary vocal performance, I was unprepared when he sang "see how I die" and Jewison followed with a collage of paintings of Christ's death on the cross. I broke out in heaving sobs - right there in the middle of cowboy country. I have never forgotten that scene, and though I was not a Christian then and am no longer a Christian, I cry every - single - time.
For those who in their anti-religious zeal ridicule or despise people of faith, you have missed something very important. In this scene you watch a human being struggle to come to terms with a terrible fate and yet you feel no compassion for them? Fact is that many who face death, especially one involving great suffering, go through this exact process, religious or not. The scene's power lies not in the particulars of Jesus's story but in the universality of the human struggle to reconcile oneself to a world of casual cruelty.

A great performance by Ted as Jesus, with this scene being his most touching in the movie. Ted Neely and Carl Anderson give the world two of the all time great performances in a movie and/or stage in Jesus Christ Superstar. They took their great talent from the stage to the big screen and blew everyone away.
