Ted Neeley has performed this song hundreds of times over the years, but the older he gets the better he performs. I think that this is one of his best performances.

Ted refused to sing this song in rehearsals, not even dress rehearsals, so the first night of this run was the first time the cast and crew had heard him do it too. The last time before he sang it was at Carl Anderson’s funeral x

@@eeemilu I’m not fervently religious but I’m Christian (started as a skeptic who grew in the faith).
Anyone can appreciate that this epitomises a human struggle, one that emanates from the depth of one’s soul. Jesus was human and suffered as most of us suffer. He knew he was destined to suffer. Even as a non believer I could relate to this.
One’s belief does not detract from his suffering. But it brings new meaning. The suffering is on behalf of mankind and done out of love so that we may forgive ourselves, and to give hope for the future. For a Christian, his death has more meaning and impact.

He wasn't trying to act it ( except for the natural emotion he puts into the song) or worry about his blocking, camera angles etc ( in the movie but here also). And that high note sounds like a natural move within Ian"s voice rather than a note he is reaching for apart from the rest of the song. That shows even more when you watch the "Who sang the high note best in Gesthemene" video. Ian just blows them all away.

He refused to perform it in rehearsals because after the passing of Carl Anderson (who played Judas in the movie with him as well as on other JC Superstar tours) he didn't want to sing it without him. He saved the first time singing it again for the performance itself.

Pouring out their stories of how he touched their lives. He hugged them, gave autographs, took selphies with them. Stayed until they were all gone, and I believe it's because he may be the nicest most genuine person I've ever met. He looked at me kind of quizzically and said I reminded him of a very dear friend of his and he could tell I had a kind soul. He has a presence.... you cannot explain....

After reading the negative short sighted comments regarding this ONE performance, the self proclaimed "pros" who keep yacking about their so-called 20+yrs experience are missing the point. And that is that despite the dozens of younger & potentially "better" singers that have taken on the role of Jesus, none come close to capturing the ESSENCE of Ted Neely. I've seen at least 6 dudes' rendition of this piece & they leave me cold. Neely brings tears to my eyes to this day. Which is why people people clamored & begged for his return to the play in recent years, which he so graciously accepted. Ditto for Carl Anderson ( RIP). With all due respect to the technicians, Vocal teachers & conservatory training ain't shit without the soul that accompanies such gut wrenching renditions. I could go on...

No is a memory, another time, even the people are other today, only care about material values. nothing is the same, everything change, nothing come back. Gethsemane, where the bar was set so high [by first Ian Gillan in London and then Ted Neely when Superstar 'crossed the pond'] that a great many Jesus' have fallen there long before we reach the end of the show!

I was fortunate enough to see Ted perform this role when he was nearing 70. First of all, he still sang the role like an absolute boss. Secondly, when I had the honor of meeting him backstage and asking him how he as an actor prepared for such a monumental role (had to ask, I'm a theater geek/major), he used this song as an example: He said he always sings this song not as a man transcending from humanity to godhood, but rather as a scared child saying to his father, "Daddy, I'm scared and I don't know what to do. Please help me." That sentiment struck me to the heart as a then-Christian and still hits me now as a Wiccan. It's something everyone can relate to, the child crying out to their parents for help and the deity sacrificing him/herself for the sake of humanity. That's what I love so much about this show: Everyone, no matter their spirtual background or where they are on their spiritual path can relate to this telling of Jesus' journey. Blessed be. + )O(

Brilliant. Captures all the complex emotions inherent in humanity's questions for a God, who if he does exist, has left us to figure things out for ourselves. Performed with a great empathy that comes out straight from his heart through his voice. Had to wipe away tears before I wrote this.

For me Ted Neeley will always be the Jesus for Jesus Christ Superstar. I remember when it first came out, I had listened to the concert was liked it okay, but wasn’t in love with it. So when the movie came out, I wasn’t interested. However, I had an out-of-town guest who wanted to see it. So we went. Oddly, she didn’t like it much, but I loved it. I’ll bet I saw it a dozen times while it was in the theatre, usually in the early afternoon where I might be the only person there. It was Ted in that particular scene that kept bringing me back. I am not particularly religious, but Gethsemane was so powerful, I was drawn to it over and over. Ted was and is (even with some vocal issues) magnificent.

Ted Neeley is a legend. This is HIS role. The best part for me was how excited the rest of the cast got when he hit those high notes. Even with "some problems with his voice" this performance is perfection, and as always brought tears to my eyes. The "problems" just made the emotion greater. Made his pain hit that much harder. I'm in awe, as always.
