I love this version simply because you can hear the fear in Ted Neely’s voice. So much emotion and power. Also I read somewhere that Andrew Lloyd Webber was 17 when he wrote the score for Jesus Christ Superstar and it blows me away. To be 17 and write this incredible music!! Thank You ALW.
Yes at that age it's impressive. If you look back at those times. Most of the song writers were very young. Look at Pete Townshend he wrote Tommy and quadrophenia who's next. And all the others he was in his early 20s I think he was like 18 or 19 he did Tommy and he composed all them songs himself. SAME with the Beatles a lot of these guys where really young
That's the thing about this musical that sets it apart. Everything about the divine is up in the air, apart from this montage, the ending scene, and "Superstar", but the former two's presentations are unique to this movie. It focuses on the human and historical context. Most of all, it doesn't shy away from the idea that Jesus may have been a crazy person, and that's why people turned on him. Coz this crazy man, or rather, his movement, would get them killed by the Romans like they did in 40 years. Even if you are a believer, it's really an angle one shouldn't ignore about the time and place
I think that the magic of this film, it’s make Jesus as a relatable human rather then a divine being. As a pagan i can view Christ as a great teacher and Ted Neeley Version shows Christ as a teacher scared of what he knows he must do
I think the point of the play/movie is to lie and take away Christ’s divinity and make him a selfish human, to also help push selfish Capitalistic individualism, etc. “What is MY reward?” Etc.
what i truly love about this scene is that gives Jesus life. The man was historically real and went through this Hell and this scene humanizes Jesus, he was about to suffer incredibly and he didnt know why he had to and had true genuine fear and doubt like any human would. Ted absolutely killed with the vocals and its shocking the man could sing like that.
Renan Carreira, no. Ian Gillian is another rock star and AMAZING at this song but the style of the ad libbing part is quite different. This is Ted Neeley from the original Broadway cast. Ted Neeley wasn’t even the principle for Jesus in that cast, either. The principle was Jeff Fenholt. I believe the story behind the casting of Ted Neeley for the film production is because Ian Gillian, frontman for Deep Purple was on tour and wanted his band to be paid for missed concerts. Well, since that price was way too high, Ted Neeley was cast and now most internationally (at least outside of England and maybe most of Europe) recognize him as THE Jesus for this role. Ted Neeley has performed Jesus in production for DECADES well into his 70’s because of his notoriety in it.
Renan Carreira, there are recordings of Ian Gillian performing this on RUclips. One of the videos is actually a STAND-IN because Ian Gillian was unavailable for the video shoot or something. The video with the bad editing where Ian Gillan’s voice and the mouth in the video not being aligned? THAT is the real Ian Gillian. Perfectly straight straight. The curly haired guy in the other video is the STAND-IN from that video recording. The sound tracks are the same, though, and it is Ian Gillan’s voice you are hearing. Ian Gillian starred in the West End (London) production of JCS.
Liz, let me assure you Jesus knew full well what was to come next, yet He saw all the physical pain he was about to experience. Not only that but He was about burden himself with all mankind's sins. That burden was beyound any word can describe. This is why He was THE PERFECT LAMB , He died for our sins. NOW, through His sacrifice WE have a chance for freedom. We are all saved, yet we must accept THIS GIFT. I pray you do. I did 40 years ago!
3:57 Why this moment is so underrated? I didn't see anything like this not on a stage, nor in 2000 movie. This is the greatest part of this scene, Father gives Jesus a little knowledge of his future suffering. So cruel, and so full of love at the same time. Even I, an atheist, feel something here.
RIGHT! just like you i am also an atheist and this is my second favorite musical of all time. the musical is timeless and will forever stand the test of time
I think you feel something because the jesus portrayed here is actually HUMAN. not the demigod presented by in most abrahamaic religions. None of this would land if Jesus here didn't feel doubt and fear.
I've watched this movie dozens of times, and this scene hundreds. But something occurred to me yesterday that hadn't struck me before. It shows that God answers prayer. Jesus asks if what he says will matter more and to be shown he will not die in vain. GOD ANSWERS HIS PRAYER. He shows him art that will be painted 13 centuries later. Yes, it will matter more, and God shows him it will in a way perfectly suited to the pace of the film and integrated with the score. The film changes at that point. After the art sequence, Jesus isn't defiant and questioning. He is humble in addressing God, and his tone and expressions indicate he is asking God to understand why he had had his doubts. His tone the second time he says "Now I'm sad and tired" is very different than it is the first time he says it. Except for that one powerful line, "What you started; I didn't start it" from this point on, he faces what he has to face with acceptance and dignity. All he asks of God is "Take me now before I change my mind." This shows he had free will and knew that, because he was the Son of Man as well as the Son of God, he was subject to human frailties such as fear and doubt. And again GOD ANSWERS HIS PRAYER. The very next scene is Judas's kiss and Jesus's arrest. I had never noticed the message that God answers prayer in this short segment of the film before. One of the wonderful aspects of art is that we can interact with it hundreds of time and experience something new with each interaction.
D O - I don’t agree. Jesus accepts dying first in the lyrics. The pictures and paintings are the depictions of his death by artists throughout history. It’s a form of human sacrifice.
Very beautiful reply, I agree holy. My dad made me watch this after a crippling heroin addiction. And, god does answer prayer. Maybe it's not always perfect, but if you ask you'll see a sign. And that scene showing not only will he be remembered but, that he needed to see his journey through.
I noticed that too. Jesus had to die the way he did to be remembered and for his ministry and his word sto matter so much more than if he didn't go through with the plan.
Norman Jewison is a genius. If you like this film, you should check out his other movie musical Fiddler on the Roof. He also made a number of excellent dramas including The Thomas Crown Affair, Agnes of God, Moonstruck, and The Hurricane. The attention to those subtle details in the drama of the song is what makes his films so unforgettable. Another film to check out, by the inimitable Alan Parker, is Evita. He has that same sense of subtlety that gives you a new perspective with every viewing. Excellence of this magnitude always brings me to tears.
3:53 I watched this as a kid and the weird uncanny cuts to the artwork with the music gave me nightmares about Seto Kaiba from Yugioh dying the same way and I was inconsolable for a week. I was a weird kid.
I was about 20 when I first saw this scene decades ago and it made me cry. I sat there with my sisters and we were all speechless. The photos are haunting and the whole scene indeed humanizes Jesus. He was afraid, just like we would be. I love the musical- we have the original album that my brother bought in the early 70’s as well as the one from the movie. I have attended 2 theatrical productions and enjoyed the live one on tv featuring John Legend. Awesome music, direction and singing each time.
@@someguy4405 The thing is that the crucifixion was the easy part of jesus's death. In the garden of gethsemane he experienced the collective suffering of humanity at once. It was so intest that he bled from every single pour.
The part when he says "see how I'll die" and then different paintings are showing how he will actually die.... man, it gives me chills.. This song is a masterpiece in musical history (both music and lyrics), and Ted is the perfect Jesus.
I've seen the original show in New York City the original cast in Washington DC and this transition is equal to anything I have seen I hear it time and time again but not enough congratulations it's super
Ted Neeley, the original Jesus Christ Superstar, is by far the best of all. I've never seen anyone act and sing like that at the same time. May God bless him, Texas should be sooooo proud !!!!!
Some of the deeeeeepest and meaningful lyrics ever written. I still get in tears when I listen to them, and I'm not young and not christian..... they get to my poor soul and move extremely.... i cannot help meself from crying....m really deeply moved....
@@koldomakazaga6846 of course. actually, I didn't say that he is better, but his performance is really slept on. so I thought you'd like to listen to him if you hadn't yet
Ted Neely, is the best, for this song, and As Jesus. He sings it from his soul, after 52 years, listening this song,.. I love it more and more. Bless you, Ted Neely.❤
i am not religious too and i tkink thats one of the reason i love this song and the whole rock opera. Jesus for a religious person had never desputed god. Also jesus wasnt afraid of dead for the orthodoxy. But thw truth is that Jesus was a person who lived, and history talks aboyt him, but like a person who feel like a human and not like god. Thats the reason that movie didnt be accepted by the church.
If I may I'm a Christian a missionary, though the theological is not exactly right. But the excellence of the portrayal of Jesus in pain and in great distress is accurate. Jesus was 100% man and 100% God in the flesh. He came to suffer for not a few but all humanity. Knowing full will the pain he was about to endure. I love this performance!
@@scubadubba123 The only real problem I've ever had with _JCS_ is that it doesn't include the resurrection. But, as someone once pointed out to me, it deals with Jesus AS A MAN, and He was a human as well as a diety. This song reminds us that because he was human, He didn't relish pain and death any more than any of us. I rejoice in the resurrection, but little in the salvation arc moves me like the scene in Gethsemane, and this song portrays Jesus's fear so honestly and beautifully.
Faith is not the lack of doubt, it is the beleif in spite of doubt, and I think this moment is just jaw dropping in that sense. I’m not a Christian myself but I’ve grown up in a Protestant household and have studied the theology to a degree, this absolutely nails the doubt jesus must have felt all throughout his journey, he believed he was doing gods will, but he could never be sure, and this song encapsulates what that can do to someone.
this is the movie that i have viewed the most number of times. Powerful music, powerful imagery, potent in its impact, great lyrics, great music and unwavering intensity
I could not speak after seeing this amazing scene. When I came out of the cinema, was stunned. Jesus, your life was not wasted, just the very beginning for many peoples. You are in a safe place now. Angel 😇
I've never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Neely, but my brother did. He was working at a radio station when Jesus Christ Superstar came to town. They came to do an interview and my brother was working in the control room and Mr. Neely came in and introduced himself and said hello. My brother said he was so nice. That just seemed like a very nice gesture on his part.
Several times I've met Mr Neeley, Carl Anderson and many of the original & later years touring cast. First time was in the 80's after a JC show at the Kravitz Center in West Palm Beach, FL. At the time, was in the early years of what became a 30yr career in Microbiology/Software. Only mention that bcuz ima hardcore "nerd" prone to logical/rationality. Thus, to wait outside a building IN THE DEAD HUMID HEAT in So FL in the hopes of seeing/meeting a man I'd long considered an 'idol' maybe (?) .... well ..... lets just say I was a nerd b4 it was cool 2b a nerd - you know back in the day when it was VERY UNCOOL - even shameful/embarrassing/a source 2b bullied - and as such, groupie type behaviors NOT in my usual style, lol. Yet, I was raised on JC as I had a 6yr older sister whom CONSTANTLY played the albums & so on that day, in my mid-20's, I somehow felt moved to TRY 2C him @least? Almost decided against when I got back behind that building & realized I was FAR FROM even a few whom apparently felt the very same in being "moved", LOL. There were HUNDREDS lined up. Ug. And IT WAS BOILING HOT. Double ug. At 54yrs old, prolly the ONLY time in my Life I chose to tolerate such conditions .... for ANY purpose/goal. Yet, I did. What a blessing that day came 2b for me. Not only did I meet Mr's Neeley, Anderson & so many others (and Mariah Carey whom played M Magdeline that performance - pffft), I'll NEVER understand fully how it came 2b I was invited to meet up w/the cast at the bar in the local hotel they were staying at. I went & was an event which has always meant much more to me over the years than even the very day it happened. Why? Mr Neeley was SO UNBELIEVABLY GRACIOUS, friendly, warm and "loving" than almost anybody I'd ever met in my Life at that time - and to this day! To say he inspired me would be a gross understatement! He AND Mr Anderson specifically among the many cast members 😌 We conversed for almost 2hrs & I feel he shared his TRUE SELF that day with me. I've never once thought his words/behavior that day were simply in accordance w/being "famous" or otherwise .... Rather, his simple interactions in conversing with me, his sharing on the topics that came up .....AND ESPECIALLY his mannerisms were so .... okay, this is where I KNOW this is gonna sound "hokey or corny" .... but his persona seemed to GENUINELY reflect a personality that seemed to align w/what one might identify as .... or 2b what ..... well .... JESUS would be like. Seriously. Was weird & most unexpected? After all, he was just an actor, right? Playing a part? Yeah ..... NO Somehow, his gentle mannerisms & choice of words absolutely flowed from within him & there was an undeniable awareness there was a spirit - HIS Spirit - that somehow carried within in a VERY REAL sense of Christ. I wondered a few times during the interaction if it wasn't simply that I WAS PERCEIVING such a feeling as a direct result of influence in my having JUST seen the JC SuperStar play & twas merely a lingering effect of the performance? Checked & had to double check myself .... no, it wasn't. There was something ABSOLUTELY AUTHENTIC & GENUINE in his nature that spewed goodwill, warmth & human connection from him (& for the record, Mr Anderson's as well) Anyways, he spoke of not just the performance, play, the ongoing tour, current events, blah blah blah ..... but what ALSO struck me as so admirably benevolent was how he spoke of his family (wife & children) nearing the end of our conversation. Understandably, he was missing his family in his absence from them during the ongoing tour. The topic had come up NOT bcuz or to assuage me from any idea of "hooking up" w/this guy now. LOL - LAST THING I would even have thought of in those days - bein a nerd girl n all *red face* Rather, somehow, it came up during conversation wherein I found myself speaking of my difficulty at the time in recovering from a sorely broken heart & how I found certain JC songs 2b comforting. That was just one of several topics where he shared things from his own Life w/me and which I took 2b advice perhaps? Hope? Dealing w/emotions & NOT just stuffing or running from them? Awe, there was so much he shared w/me in the kindest of nature and w/a warmth that radiated acceptance, not being alone, lessons 2b found in human suffering, blah blah blah ..... I remember at one point, I got goosebumps all over & having this "FEELING" of something that I'd just experienced in his words ..... I felt such a sudden feelimg of being overwhelmed .... & (embarassingly) I just blurted out perhaps a bit TOO loudly "Christ ! Its like you ARE Christ !" Well ..... I dunno WHO was more embarrassed? Him or I? Why? Bcuz suddenly all the others turned around and looked at us and burst into laughter. Mr Neeley visibly blushed. I was lost/confused momentarily. That is, until Mr Anderson came back to where we were sitting & clued me in on how (quoting Carl Anderson) "He often has that effect on folks" Huh? Ohhhhhh, okay, I thought to myself. So he IS just 'playing the part' w/me then? Good one! As I left the hotel an hour later, I realized I was wrong. He went on to explain how the role HAD affected him in his own life and that perhaps the very fact of the impact of PLAYING JESUS 100's of times HAD become somewhat ingrained & how w/out realizing it, perhaps he had "picked up" an understanding behind or within the thought processes of the original "Christ". Well, I could go on, but confident the point has been made? He showed me photo's in his wallet of his wife & children, spoke SO LOVINGLY and kindly of them and his eyes lit up describing to me all the magnificence of each of his family members & THEIR Spirit. And alas, I "got" it ! My own broken heart WOULD EVENTUALLY mend 😊. Something better was in store for me. He reminded of a verse w/in a Led Zeppelin tune, "Rain song" 🎼 Upon every Life a little rain must fall 🎵 He gave me contact info for his agent that day & In the years that followed, I DID make contact three or four times ...... whenever the JC tour came anywhere near where I lived & he ALWAYS had tickets awaiting me at the door and a warm hug after a show 😊. I got to take my older sister twice, the one whom STARTED me on my own love of JC Superstar. Tho he's unaware, was one the BEST days of HER Life just having the opportunity to see the Live JC show after decades of adoring the music & movie. She was my best friend. She died 5yrs ago & whenever I find myself missing her dearly, I come here to watch this vid & listen to this song. Twas her favorite song ever & she OFTEN told me how grateful she was to see the Live JC Superstar & meet Ted Neeley & Carl Anderson. I will always be grateful to them for this as well so I have these memories w/my sister 😪 Apologies for this lengthy comment. Surely, I went on a bit much, eh? My bad 😔 Anyhooooo, tho lengthy & likely boring, just that I felt again moved ..... & intended only to leave my pwn mark in support of others recount justifying the fact that Ted Neeley DEFINITELY IS one of THE kindest of men one could ever meet - or imagine. Eternally indebted to this man for sharing his talent w/the world & his warmth to help heal a young girl w/what she thought would be an unhealable broken heart 💔. And ...... for showing me that day there IS a little "Christ" in each of us 😉
I was 18 years old the first time I saw this at the theater, I am now 65 years old and it is still one on my favorite movies. I had it on VHS, now on DVD. I watch it every Easter. They brought the play to the small town of Salina, Kansas in about 1990 and it was amazing. Ted Neely even played the part of Jesus. He is awesome.
This is my favorite song from this musical. It interprets Jesus when he is at a crossroad: he faces dark times and then accepts it. (In the Bible he sweats blood.) Another song goes, "He could have called a thousand angels." The gethsemane song is intense, as it should be.
Ted was perfect for this movie. With his vocal ability he could have done anything he wanted but he has always been fully dedicated to this role. He is such a great man. The fact that he could still sing this at age 78 says a whole lot about Ted. I love the Ian Gillam version as well, but i don't think there was a more perfect person to play this role than Ted. He has always had my highest respect for what he did in this movie as well as Carl Anderson. Both were perfect.
Our Jesus suffered, incredible loneliness and fear in the event for safety..often , as a mortal. prayers..we all go through this.. our faith, hope ,strength will get us through.. Pray to our Jesus Christ. Amen.
The most emotional moment in human history. He is the Son of God but he was just a human being at this time. His free decision to suffer and die for our sins despite his fears and doubts should inspire all of us and has inspired many of us. What an incredible performance by Ted Neeley.
I have heard Neeley's performance of this song a zillion times but every time it is completely riveting and enthralling. Absolutely brilliant magical stuff here.
As a young teen my friends and I saw this many times. The music ,the dancers, scenery and of course all the handsome young entertainers all sun kissed . We were enthralled.
I’ve always thought Neely’s performance is superior than Sesto’s. However, I’ve heard a live performance by Sesto, very much powerful than album recording, and close to Neely
@@AdderTude The Agony in the Garden is hardly an invention of Weber. The Bible depicts him asking for his death to pass him by. Those are not words spoken by someone who does not hold at least a tiny bit of doubt and fear as to why he should die. Yes, he thought he knew, but 100% certainty was not available to him.
Yes it was. He says multiple times in the New Testament that His purpose was to redeem the world. God's plan is to have a Savior to die for humanity in order to release all souls from the chains of death. That's what ALW doesn't quite understand in the lyrics he wrote for "Gethsemane."
I remember I was a little girl and when the stage play and movie came out, the preacher at my church condemned the work at the pulpit. When I watch the film a few years later, I lived it--especially this song which humanizes Jesus.
Of all renditions of this song, I don't believe I've ever heard it done better. Every version has been very good, but still performed. Ted Neely seems to actually live in it. Goosebumps to this day...
This is the best Rick Opera ever made, or ever will be made, top to bottom, hands down! Many disbelieve the subject matter, and many disregard Jesus Christ himself, but he is the only way to heaven, and you can attain GRACE THROUGH HIM TO ENTER HEAVEN. Please invite him into your life and watch yourself change, for the betterment of all who have ever known you! He died for you and me!
This song affects me so emotionally and brings me to tears. You can hear the emotion in Ted's voice. He really nails it then and now😊 I was fortunate to see him on the JCS not once but twice on the road tour. I love him in it and noone can hold a candle to portrayal of Jesus❤
I lucked out and saw the musical live in the Netherlands several years ago and Ted Neely was playing Jesus! It was insanely good I was grinning ear to ear, singing my little heart out and had tears in my eyes coz this was one of my most watched movies of my childhood, back before you had the insanity of MTV and current days fixation with Netflix and streaming. JCSS is one of the classics!
Poor Jesus, he was so lonely in Ghetshemany garden... all his friends were sleeping and he knew what is going to happen... thank you Jesus that you have entered our dark hours in lifes... take care all
A powerful rendition for all time. One wonders if even Ted may think he never matched it again, not completely. It's that good, in every perfect nuance of both vocal and mannerism. For those who haven't heard it, go over and also listen to the powerful Gillan version from the original vinyl album. BOTH versions are unsurpassed world-class gifts to mankind. I would not dare stoop to "compare" them. I'll take them both, with thanks.
This is what Christianity is about: you doubt, you despair, you get angry and in the end you submit to your fate: to give yourself into your destiny and thus to your fellow human beings, your neighbour, your brothers and sisters...
Ted Neely made this one of, if not THE, memorable musicals of all time. When he raised his voice to a shriek, it stirs the blood and mind inexorably! Thank you and may God bless you for the eternal memories!!
Have listened to many covers, including my Fav singer Ian Gillan but Ted cannot be matchede for the feeling and emotion he put into this song! A Great talent which cannot be Equaled!!
Once I was inspired Now I'm sad and tired Help me Lord My heart cries out against the plans of man I will not die for them That was never your plan And I understand that now
This song haunted my nightmares every so often as a child, the flashing imagery of the crucifixion was shocked and powerful to me then and still is now. My father actually met Ted when they were on tour back in the 80’a and I would have done anything to see it then. Truly a lyrical and compositional masterpiece that I will definitely be passing down to my children like my father before me.
Teddy brings so much emotion to his performance and the angles that Norman Jewison used to tell the story somehow make this masterpiece of a song even more brilliant
I’ll be honest, I’m not religious and don’t consider myself part of any religion but this song and this performance gives me chills. I’m a theatre performer myself, nothing too huge or on broadway or anything but I dabble but this is one of those roles i could never do justice. Because there’s no way I could do anything close to what he’s done
Ooooh the shivers. This is such an invocative peace in so many ways. But that last, quivering note of ”before I change my mind” is the perfect expression of so many complicated feelings! I’ve found myself quoting it in my mind so many times, before difficult decisions or conflicting emotions. Not bc what the words mean, but how final they are. The ultimate surrender to fate.
Ninguno como él. Con la de veces que he escuchado y visto esta escena desde 1975 y siempre se me eriza la piel y se me saltan las lágrimas. Magnífica voz e insuperable interpretación. Todos los que vinieron detrás, caca de la vaca.

And that scene showing not only will he be remembered but, that he needed to see his journey through.
socalcraigster I agree with you
I noticed that too.
When I was a kid I drew endless comics about Joey and Kaiba being best friends and going on adventures 😂 so you weren't the only weird one
I appreciate how specific that nightmare is
You and I had the exact same childhood 😁😁😁
kaiba becomes jesus christ is now my yugioh headcanon
I was about 20 when I first saw this scene decades ago and it made me cry. I sat there with my sisters and we were all speechless. The photos are haunting and the whole scene indeed humanizes Jesus. He was afraid, just like we would be. I love the musical- we have the original album that my brother bought in the early 70’s as well as the one from the movie. I have attended 2 theatrical productions and enjoyed the live one on tv featuring John Legend. Awesome music, direction and singing each time.
I’m not religious but I loved this movie growing up (mainly because of the music) and made the story easy to understand.
Why are you not religious? Jesus is real and He loves you.
Rips me apart every time I hear it
Nearly 50 years later, and it’s still like the first time.
3:57 - 4:22 that's the summary of why I was always scared of religious paintings.

A moment of supreme suffering burned into the memory of western civilisation forever.

The thing is that the crucifixion was the easy part of jesus's death. In the garden of gethsemane he experienced the collective suffering of humanity at once. It was so intest that he bled from every single pour.

“Thy will is hard, but you hold every card” How many can relate? 😞🙏🏽❤️
I have loved this glorious praise to our dear loving God. From the first time I heard it. Always, praise the Lord ❤️❤️❤️❤️
The story of Jesus regardless of it's truth or not is actually a really good story.
Ted Neely’s version is the best no one else could beat this performance period!!
Look for Camilo Sesto,s version
Kevin Carbone, I totally agree! Even the creator (Lloyd Webber) of the show admited That Camilo was the best singer for Jesuchrist superstar
You guys gotta check Luka Zakariadze's live performance. Just type his name
Mikheil Mikelad he is impressive, but every one has a different taste....and I still like more Camilo Sesto
Ian Gillan
I'm not religious, but I love this song. It was one of my mother's favorites and I remember listening to it as a child.
Good stuff
same
Same, this song is powerfull.
Same
i am not religious too and i tkink thats one of the reason i love this song and the whole rock opera.
I’m not religious either.
“God thy will is hard, but you hold every card” wow
Strongest line he ever wrote!!!!
Leko that’d be Tim Rice, of course...
Angel 😇
His rock climbing and uphill battle actions symbolize the struggle that Jesus faced praying to god in the garden and facing his fears.

Well he is Jesus, what would you expect? It's a lot of PR to keep up with :))
I met Ted Neeley he's the nicest person you could ever meet he was really sweet to me and my family you would love him
Several times I've met Mr Neeley, Carl Anderson and many of the original & later years touring cast.
He AND Mr Anderson specifically among the many cast members 😌
We conversed for almost 2hrs & I feel he shared his TRUE SELF that day with me.
Yeah ..... NO
Somehow, his gentle mannerisms & choice of words absolutely flowed from within him & there was an undeniable awareness there was a spirit - HIS Spirit - that somehow carried within in a VERY REAL sense of Christ.
There was something ABSOLUTELY AUTHENTIC & GENUINE in his nature that spewed goodwill, warmth & human connection from him (& for the record, Mr Anderson's as well)
Anyways, he spoke of not just the performance, play, the ongoing tour, current events, blah blah blah ..... but what ALSO struck me as so admirably benevolent was how he spoke of his family (wife & children) nearing the end of our conversation.
& (embarassingly) I just blurted out perhaps a bit TOO loudly
"Christ ! Its like you ARE Christ !"
Well ..... I dunno WHO was more embarrassed? Him or I? Why? Bcuz suddenly all the others turned around and looked at us and burst into laughter. Mr Neeley visibly blushed. I was lost/confused momentarily. That is, until Mr Anderson came back to where we were sitting & clued me in on how (quoting Carl Anderson)
"He often has that effect on folks"
Huh?
He reminded of a verse w/in a Led Zeppelin tune, "Rain song"
🎼 Upon every Life
a little rain must fall 🎵
He gave me contact info for his agent that day & In the years that followed, I DID make contact three or four times ...... whenever the JC tour came anywhere near where I lived & he ALWAYS had tickets awaiting me at the door and a warm hug after a show 😊. I will always be grateful to them for this as well so I have these memories w/my sister 😪
Apologies for this lengthy comment. Surely, I went on a bit much, eh?
My bad 😔
Anyhooooo, tho lengthy & likely boring, just that I felt again moved ..... And ...... for showing me that day there IS a little "Christ" in each of us 😉
I met him a few years ago at a showing and interview of the movie. He was the nicest person and gave me the biggest hug. ;)
❤❤👍👍 beautiful..🇮🇹🇮🇹from Italy capolavoro!!! Senza tempo 👍
This is my favorite song from this musical. It interprets Jesus when he is at a crossroad: he faces dark times and then accepts it. (In the Bible he sweats blood.) Another song goes, "He could have called a thousand angels." The gethsemane song is intense, as it should be.
May Angels always look after you. 😇
Most believable, how I love Ted Neeley for bringing this rock opera to life in the name of Our Savior!
Thank you Jesus for your love.
Ian and Camilo were fantastic... but Ted Neeley was the best performance ever, by far.
Teddy, your voice is so powerful. I cry every time I hear you sing this song! God bless you.
I love pugs I'm so obsessed with them
This film changed my life.
One of the greatest moments in musical and cinematic history.

Our Jesus suffered, incredible loneliness and fear in the event for safety..often , as a mortal. prayers..we all go through this.. our faith, hope ,strength will get us through.. Pray to our Jesus Christ. Amen.
this is one of the most impressive compositions I've ever heard.
One of the greatest performances ever committed to film.
He definitely did not die in vain. They made a whole movie about him numerous in fact
T
Teddy Neelys the only one who could have sung this song utter brilliance it brings me to shivers
This never gets old. I could see it a thousand times and it still gives me chills.
Between Ted Neely and Camilo Sesto, they gave this song life.
I’ve always thought Neely’s performance is superior than Sesto’s. However, I’ve heard a live performance by Sesto, very much powerful than album recording, and close to Neely
You need to watch Steve Balsamo sing it! I was speechless
Neely>Gillan>>>>>>>others
Its the "Why" that gets me every time.
How can there be a more emotional song and delivery than this. Greatness in every aspect.
I’ve listened to all renditions of this song and Ted Neely hands down is still the best of all....just the emotion he displays brings tears....
Yeah, I agree!
Listen to John Legend's version. Equally powerful.
God damn this movie had such great music, and I love this song. Really shows the humanity of Jesus.
"You're far too keen on where and how
but not too hot on why"
Fact is, Jesus knew why, else He wouldn't have been able to teach about the Gospel as effectively. ALW limits Him too much in this musical.
AdderTude Just stop arguing and enjoy the music.

Ted Neeley....what an incredible voice and still doing it after all these years....beautiful
If I ever die young (before 60, before 70 if I still feel young) I want them to play this at my funeral

They made films in the 70s so good . Do love this so much . Full on energy and feeling in the singing to me
What a voice, and what a gorgeous performance.
Ted Neeley is absolutely incredible, saw him live a few years back and at 70 something years old he was just as powerful!
I remember I was a little girl and when the stage play and movie came out, the preacher at my church condemned the work at the pulpit. When I watch the film a few years later, I lived it--especially this song which humanizes Jesus.
Great scene...great song...very wow..
Everyone should hear Camilo Sesto sing this. He was a Spaniah singer who brought this musical to Spain in the 70’s. His voice is extreme.
Of all renditions of this song, I don't believe I've ever heard it done better. Every version has been very good, but still performed. Ted Neely seems to actually live in it. Goosebumps to this day...
Thank you Jesus for what you done for me!! You saved me!!
There is nothing that can surpass the meaning and Ted's interpretation of this piece of music! my sincere gratitude to a wonderful Artist!!!
I know EVERY word from this movie as we did a presentation back in the late 70's and I cry thru it every time
i adore this film soooo in the moment
Каждый раз я волнуюсь и плачу, актуально, как никогда! Гениально!
Poor Jesus, he was so lonely in Ghetshemany garden... all his friends were sleeping and he knew what is going to happen... thank you Jesus that you have entered our dark hours in lifes... take care all
He wasn’t alone... He knew it was all apart of the plan
50 years after filming, stil the best musical, stil the best film ever, still the best music ever. Thank you Mr. Weber!
Ted's voice resonates in my heart after all these years. Amazing🥰
Ted Neely made this one of, if not THE, memorable musicals of all time. When he raised his voice to a shriek, it stirs the blood and mind inexorably! Thank you and may God bless you for the eternal memories!!
This film is our Easter tradition. This song is so beautiful.
Thank You Jesus for that You died for me!I love You!Amen.
Incredible voice on this lad.
I saw Ted at Wolf Trap, Virginia as JC in 2007. He totally rocked and yes, he hit the high notes
Have listened to many covers, including my Fav singer Ian Gillan but Ted cannot be matchede for the feeling and emotion he put into this song! A Great talent which cannot be Equaled!!
JUST AWESOME
Tears kept rolling down my cheek. A miraculous performance!
Once I was inspired
Now I'm sad and tired
Help me Lord
My heart cries out against the plans of man
I will not die for them
That was never your plan
And I understand that now
40 years later it’s still magnificent
This song haunted my nightmares every so often as a child, the flashing imagery of the crucifixion was shocked and powerful to me then and still is now. My father actually met Ted when they were on tour back in the 80’a and I would have done anything to see it then. Truly a lyrical and compositional masterpiece that I will definitely be passing down to my children like my father before me.
Amazing Actor and singer.. what a talent
And drummer & composer❤
Absolutely classic and to date, no one can replicate the iriginal version
Here for the 'Why' of it all.
Teddy brings so much emotion to his performance and the angles that Norman Jewison used to tell the story somehow make this masterpiece of a song even more brilliant
best version of the best rock opera ever
Nope, Ian Gillan sings the best version
Слышу первые ноты и ком в горле,это потрясает!!!!!
So powerful and fitting in this day and age. The man can still do this song, after all these years. Bless you, Ted Neeley.
I no still know every single word. I had the album and I listened to all the time. Ahh the 1970’s were so good ❤. Loved this movie and music❤
One of my favorite movies. All the songs are well done.
Today I listen to this for my daddy in heaven our fav film to watch together I miss u so much happy easter daddy ❤
This guy is great. This song hurts my heart.
Ninguno como él. Con la de veces que he escuchado y visto esta escena desde 1975 y siempre se me eriza la piel y se me saltan las lágrimas. Magnífica voz e insuperable interpretación.
