@oldmodelarmy4402 - and that's the difference between him and the others, in my opinion. I've watched several RUclips videos of others singing Gethsemane and as good as their voices are, they don't "live" the part, as you say. Ted Neely is synonymous with the portrayal of Jesus Christ. At the opening line the emotions of old start flooding back. I am moved close to tears. Such is the beauty of the melody and lyrics in capturing the anguished angst of the man, Jesus Christ, condemned to die. The voice changes with age and so, too, the ability to hit the high notes. A seasoned trouper, Neely knows how to navigate the shortcomings with inflections and pitch nuances.
I was 13 in 1973 when I first saw this in the theater the year it was released. I left that theater a different person, it left a mark I am grateful never left me. It doesn't matter how many times and how many different shows I've watched and heard, Ted Nealy singing Gethsemane always elicits The Holy Spirit and I am cleansed with my own tears every single time. Incredible, famous, heartbreaking.Ted Neeley and other actors/singers are shaken to the core of her soul. I see/hear this song first one year before and my heart broke for Jesus. You feel what he feel💔😢

Ohhhh Ted/Jesus, I just watched to the end & to see you cry just killed me.....If you are Christ now disguised as Ted, by the grace of God you have lived an unbelievable life & again giving endlessly to the public. If you're not Christ in disguise, I have no doubt the real Jesus would be beyond proud of you. I can't write anymore. I've got to go cry.
Sorry to disappoint, but Ted is not the Christ in disguise. That's actually blasphemy and given that Ted is a devout Christian, I'm not sure he would be pleased with that "compliment". There has only ever been one Christ. Thank you.
@@LoudandClearChastity First of all, who are you to say? You do not know the ways of God & how he works to get the word to the masses. Secondly, Ted's actions in life & his dedication to portraying Christ in a very profound way, show he has the Christ spirit in him, which we should all have. It's not about waiting for one man to appear to save the world, it's about the Christ spirit within us all standing against evil & walking God's laws. Ted did all these things & it's not blasphemy when the man mirrors the actions. Ted deserves thanks for his dedication. I'm not even a Christian per se, yet his portrayal brought tears to my eyes every time I've watched JCS & that's that.
You used the words, "Ted disguised as Christ" which is very different to him having the spirit of Christ. Very different in its emphasis. I stand by what I said to you earlier. as he started singing, swaths of my skin tingled with goosebumps... more at the most passionate points of the song. An eruption of goosebumps at the back of my neck and across my scalp as he suddenly cried "Whhhhyyyyyy...""
I've seen three versions of this here on RUclips, and it's always very different. You can still see Ted Neeley taking time to get in character and straining himself for this part. It may not be as powerful as in his youth anymore, but I really respect his dedication as an actor. (And I respect the band for giving him the time to do so.)
There’s a slight drop off, but I saw him perform this on stage in Jesus Christ Superstar at age 65 and his voice was every bit as powerful, if not more so, than in the movie.
After all of these years, I can still be moved by this song. Thank you, Ted! Because of You, JCS has been a part of my Holy Week Celebration since 1973. I'm 67 yrs. old now, soon to be 68 years.

i've seen tons of versions of gethsemane by ted and other interpreters on youtube. this arguably is the best, rawest and most emotive version out there, probably because of his age, the essence of the song and jesus' fear of impending death resonate so much.
I can't believe I missed this performance, just 30. min from my home! One of the most powerful songs ever, and no one owns it like Ted, at any age! Thank you, Ted and please come back!
Same.
I’m so happy I saw him in the JCSS revival with Dennis DeYoung as Pilot. Ted Neeley still does something to me. No one else could ever play this role as far as I’m concerned.
Πόσο τέλειος και σε αυτήν την ηλικία . 100 φορές την είδα την ταινία . Υπέροχη ροκ όπερα
You're amazing, Ted Neely! 😮
How anyone can watch this without bawling is beyond me. So moving. I love Ted!!!
He had those high notes night after night, in sickness and I health. I can't imagine doing the same part for an entire career. Ted is a phenomenon.
Sorry to burst your bubble but the high notes are 100% prerecorded
@@xxKakarot doesn't burst any bubble . But they were definitely sung live in the early 80s. He probably should have given it up sooner. Prerecorded may have allowed him to keep going.
I've watched this amazing man perform this soliloquy since I was 13 years old, and it left an undeniable mark on me and 50 years later, it still stuns me today how mesmerizing he sounds performing it. He truly was born to play this part! Bravo Ted, Bravo!!!
Well, unbelievable!!! 78!!!!! This is something for the ages and strangely has been and will perhaps always be ethereal
His expressions are incredible. He was made for this very special role. Lord bless Ted Neeley ♥️
Incredible, famous, heartbreaking.Ted Neeley and other actors/singers are shaken to the core of her soul. I see/hear this song first one year before and my heart broke for Jesus. You feel what he feel💔😢
Great Opera. Timeless. Rock was created for this Opera. ❤🌍
I saw the movie-musical in 1976, then a live performance in San Diego in 2012, still with Ted Neeley. I had chills as he came on stage and started singing. This piece has influenced my life more than any teacher could.
I still get chills listening to him sing this absolutely beautiful song
God isn't your Father. Your are God. Inspiration for all history of music.
Ted is not Christ and you have blasphemed. The fact that you are not "Christian" demonstrates your ignorance. My final comment to you.
@@LoudandClearChastity My last thought...when did God die & leave you in charge to judge?
That note, Mr. Neeley, that note---INCREDIBLE!
I have goosebumps from start to finish of this performance
This literally made me have chills I'm 65 now saw Jesus Christ Superstar when it came out as a kid ..Miracle s it still brings up emotions God Bless Ted Neely 🙏 Amen
Unbelievable! I get chills everytime I hear this song...he portrays Jesus just the way I imagined him to be! Way to go Ted...🙏🏻
Phenomenal performance! This man is incredible, even after all these years! I love you Ted Neely and have for 50 years!
I met Ted a long, long time ago. Wow...he's such a beautiful human being!!! ✝️
I shish someone tell me that I am a beautiful human being. That is a great compliment!!
He sure is!!! A beautiful kind human being!! Met him in Rome ..
Still getting goosebumps !
I’ve had the opportunity to see Ted on live stage during my lifetime twice. Once on a stage in Mt Clemens, Michigan about 32 yrs ago, then again live at Popejoy Hall in Albuquerque NM 2015 ish. Both performances, just as this one, was wonderful. No one does Jesus like Mr Ted Neely❣️
Still brings tears to my eyes. Amazing voice then & now. You must be drained every time you sing this song as you put 1000% into it. Bravo Ted!
Ted is the KING of this musical. No one will ever sing it better than he does!! ❤️
I have loved Ted forever! I can sing every song, every note from JCS. Bless you Ted and thank you for being in my life …. From a 63 year old woman child from Western Canada 🥰🇨🇦🥰🇨🇦😘
Yep i know every word, every note also. Much love to you!
I, like so many others, know every single word of this movie. Moved me then, moves me now. UNPARALLELED!
Grew up watching the '73 film, saw him live in 2008, and the man is still crushing it in 2021, nothing but respect!
Ted Neely blows my mind. He set the etalon 50 years ago... and is still keeping it against all odds and other performers. Whaaat?! ❤👍
Jesus was sweating blood when this happened in the graden ,, and Ted showed us how much Jesus suffered for us, I love you Ted I love you Jesus!!! Amen
Impresionante ver a Ted después de tantos años, vi la película cuando joven y todavía me emociona.
He still gives such a moving rendition of this amazing song!!!
as he started singing, swaths of my skin tingled with goosebumps... more at the most passionate points of the song.
Ted si vienes a Chile te harás millonario!! haz solo 3 conciertos en el estadio y listo, nos harías muy felices.
After all of these years, I can still be moved by this song. Thank you, Ted! Because of You, JCS has been a part of my Holy Week Celebration since 1973. I'm 67 yrs. old now, soon to be 68 years.
But Ted!!! Holly molly!!! I'm speechless!! I saw you decades ago thanks ro my sister that loved the musical, not for being a believer, but for the amazing music and voices, and one was yours. Musically is a extremely complicated song to sing very few people can achieve it, but seinf you at 78 nailing it it's such a joy to my heart. This song for me it's like a bolero, you can interpret it depending of your experiences and make it yours. Like the song says: I, only want to say... BRAVO!!!
Long live Ted you have a tremendous voice and soul. You are the BEST
Amen
This is one of my favorite songs to sing! Ted Newley is still rocking it!
