It's not just that, in this moment Jesus is telling Judas that he is destined to die as part of god's plan. You can see the profound understanding on Judas's face as Judas also understands his grim role in this divine play. His expression conveys sadness, adoration, and awe at the almighty all at once while Jesus is stoic and statuesque, just as we're used to seeing him in paintings after his death. All of this is meant to convey to the audience that both Jesus and Judas have vague understandings that their lives are not their own, but part of something bigger that will kill both of them for the greater good.
The power of the voices of Carl and Ted are strong enough to blast a mountain away, Yvonne got the voice of an angel....There's not a single song in this masterpeace that doesn't blast me away. Such great voices are almost impossible to find today.

Agree. I grew up listening to this soundtrack and always listen to it fully a few times a year but, weirdly, have never seen the movie itself. Watching this scene between the actors adds a whole new layer and meaning to what's being sung. When Jesus says, "... Think while you still have me. Move while you still see me. Far from being a betrayer (as he is often portrayed), I see Judas as a *fulfiller* of the prophesies...
@21CCommunIT I totally agree with you. Judas had a part to play. It was his destiny, beyond his control. He effectively bought Christ time to achieve what he needed to do in the garden of Gethsemane.
More of they have different approaches to the same problem. It's like two friends having differences, you respect the other person, but you think he's making the wrong moves. Both are trying to get them to see.
I always wonder if Judas realised that he was destined to betray Jesus to fulfil the prophecy, and that in this moment Judas is meant to understand that Jesus knew this and showed him love and compassion anyway. I see the look on his face as a moral dilemma “I’m meant to betray this man, but I love him so much that I don’t want to. But if I don’t, mankind can never be redeemed.” Late to the discussion, but I love listening to this song and seeing other people’s views on the little nuances in the movie.
2:25 You can see in Judas' face he realized what was going to happen. He knew what he must do, and that he was supposed to do it, Jesus wanted it. And he was sad, he knew Jesus was going to die and he really felt the meaning of it
Judas's face when Jesus grips his hand. Something so profound, such a visceral realization, the ticking clock on Jesus's life. What really matters is now.
I was reading RUclips comments under a song from Aretha Franklin’s early 70s gospel album “Amazing Grace,” and someone who identified themselves as a Muslim said they loved the album and played it all the time.
I love them. Carl and Ted are both so powerful. Ben Vereen was great as Judas, but Carl owns the role. I’ve never seen anyone do as well as Ted does Jesus. Yvonne was untouched for 45 years!
This song is written in 5/8, which is the same time signature as the famous jazz piece, "Take 5". It is one of the most difficult meters in music, and yet this was masterfully written so that it just flows seamlessly for the vocalists. And the singers... WOW! They cast this film brilliantly. All of them were amazing singers!
The incomparable Carl Anderson. Magnificent. And this moment between Jesus and Judas is so brilliantly filmed. The point is made to great effect as one reveals the future, and the other realises it.
I saw Jesus Christ Superstar in 1976 in London’s West End when I was a kid and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since. I’ve never been religious but this musical moved me.
Me too!! This musical changed my life. I was never the same after. It moved me so much. I was 13 years old when I saw it for the 1st time in 1973. It was a time in my life where I needed some change, somehow from somewhere. It was here.
Ted Neely still brought the single best singing portrayal of Jesus interacting with Judas in one of the most beautifully dramatic moments in all the years JCSS has been brought to the stage/screen.
I've always been fascinated with this movie. When I was a kid back in the 70s my sister would say, You're watching that movie again?! You watch it every time it's on!🙂
Norman Jewison knew how to get the most out of his actors. The RAW and beautiful talent of all the actors still holds after all these years. I saw this originally in the movie house when it first came out. Just wonderful.
I listened to the other versions of this song..... yeah this is by far the best and strongest. John Legend held his own, but Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson! Yes Indeed
It's so strange, when you view Mary's song through the eyes of a lover it feels off, but if you look at it through the eyes of a worried mother it makes sense
I sing this song to my own lover (fiancé) when he is worried. Is not the role of a significant other to be the voice of reason, calm and quiet in the storm of our loved one’s lives?
Andrew Lloyd Webber's music is inspired. Mary's melody - with lovely chords, mostly major chords - is sweet and in a downward, descending, easing motion. Then Judas's, and Jesus's melodic lines are ascending and aggressive, challenging, the chords in the music, bold and solid - suddenly attacking in the natural minor of the tonic. Feminine, Masculine. Major, Minor. Amazing contrast.
When I hear people say money is wasted in building churches to worship the Lord Jesus. I now think of the words of Judas. We all have a little Judas in us if we do not worship. Lord of lords. King of kings…❤️❤️❤️
I wonder if this superb and unreachable trio was aware they were performing one of the most iconic scene ever, a masterpiece both musically and cinematography…
So talented, fantastic voices, but above all embodied their roles perfectly, this is what makes this movie so special, one of my top three GOAT musicals.
One of the great things about JCSS, is that it humanizes all the characters, they don’t include the miracles/supernatural stuff, they focus on a man just trying yo make the world a better place and his followers and the disagreements between them, as well as the complicated political situation at the time with Judea being occupied by the Romans It just makes it so that everyone, religious or non religious can really appreciate the story which itself is a beautiful and tragic story
What I love most about this song, well firstly, despite what Mary is pleading, Jesus does not, or can not, close his eyes, but what I love is that at the end of the song, it becomes almost mystical chantlike.
Every time I re-watch this movie, I either gain a deeper understanding, or I see another perspective from this scene, but from the first time I saw that look at 2:20, I've never stopped thinking about it.
There is no other Judas. Others have been very, very special in the role, but this is Anderson's role. He was so special. RIP
The whole movie was his movie!

True that role was made for Anderson.
Yes.
Except they had to make him black.

This way.

One of the most dramatic film scenes ever. The look between Jesus and Judas at the moment of their break.
Judas's face when Jesus grips his hand. Something so profound, such a visceral realization, the ticking clock on Jesus's life. What really matters is now.
As an atheist, I greatly enjoy not only this song, but JCS overall.
Then get on board Jesus knows u and is waiting for you
@@catherinekammerer7094no thanks, I feel no need to indulge in religious delusions.
yep, one does not need a divine aspect to feel transcendence
It is beautiful. I am Atheist as well and it is so glorious and compelling.
@@catherinekammerer7094No thanks
Yvonne Elliman's voice is spectacular. 😉
I'm Jewish and play this soundtrack all the time - one of the best movies and soundtracks ever
I'm an ateist, but became nearly a believer when I saw this movie . If the Bible is the thrught, this movie is perfect!
I was reading RUclips comments under a song from Aretha Franklin’s early 70s gospel album “Amazing Grace,” and someone who identified themselves as a Muslim said they loved the album and played it all the time.
@@kittykatz4001 it's a great album. The movie soundtrack only, there's a bunch of others. The movie is pretty neat too.
Surely we're allowed to appreciate art from other cultures. We don't have to be Hindu to appreciate George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord."
@@erinoriordan9808 George Harrison worshipped death
Carl Anderson was THEE STAR of this production 👍
Yes, a big Actor.
Yvonne's voice is incredible
I love them. Carl and Ted are both so powerful. Ben Vereen was great as Judas, but Carl owns the role. I’ve never seen anyone do as well as Ted does Jesus. Yvonne was untouched for 45 years!
Carl Anderson is making go team judas over here- gosh i have to rewatch this every few years just to remember something so beautiful exist
Yvonne Elliman. She wasn't a well known singer when asked to play this part but she became something of a star herself afterwards.
Almost 50 years old, still spectacular!
Fan of musicals forever. Carl Anderson Judas spectacular. As good as anything I've ever seen 50+ years
I HAVE INTRODUCED THIS TO MY GRANDBABIES AND THEY LOVE IT . . . 50 YRS LATER AND THE IMPACT OF THIS MASTERPIECE HAS NOT DULLED ONE BIT.
That's a really lovely gift. So glad you could bond with them over this.
Your grandkids have good taste
Most versions, Mary only sings to Jesus. But here she's singing to Judas too... telling them both to keep calm and keep a cool head.
Women are sidelined in his story and here we have a bold rejection of that storyline
Yvonne Elliman is the greatest
The incomparable Carl Anderson. Magnificent. And this moment between Jesus and Judas is so brilliantly filmed. The point is made to great effect as one reveals the future, and the other realises it.
Yvonne has the voice of an angel.
This movie was an absolute Masterpiece!
Still is
Each of them are perfect. Mary’s love and caring. Judas’s commitment and obsession with charity. Jesus’s piousness and influence. A wondrous moment.
歌声の強さ!何十年も前に映画を観た時の感動が、全く色褪せずに蘇りました!!
Ted Newly and Carl Anderson are the heart of the film. Yvonne Ellman is the soul of this great film.
This cast is beyond amazing.
Carl Anderson and Yvonne Elliman are amazing
This cast will always be superior for me, never seen or heard better❤
Am I the only one that noticed just how much presence this Jesus has
This song has resonated with me for 50 years. Close your eyes and be at peace. Beautiful.
I saw Jesus Christ Superstar in 1976 in London’s West End when I was a kid and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since. I’ve never been religious but this musical moved me.
Jesus has no business looking so good
We must be from the streets yikes
Neither Judas, or Mary..
Glad to see others hold this movie in high esteem as I have for fifty years
Me too!! This musical changed my life. I was never the same after. It moved me so much. I was 13 years old when I saw it for the 1st time in 1973. It was a time in my life where I needed some change, somehow from somewhere. It was here.
Yvonne Elliman and Lynne thigpen (godspell) best female voices ever
What a voice Karl Anderson has
This song and the way its sung is like a bath of warm honey for the soul
One of the most beautiful scenes of Jesus Christ Superstar!👏🔝❗️😍
Ted Neely still brought the single best singing portrayal of Jesus interacting with Judas in one of the most beautifully dramatic moments in all the years JCSS has been brought to the stage/screen.
What a beautiful man, Carl Anderson 🥺😔
Love this song ,and when Judas hits that note wow
That monent when judas and jesus clasp hands with Yvonnes singing.
Jeez.
It’s so impactful
I've always been fascinated with this movie. When I was a kid back in the 70s my sister would say, You're watching that movie again?! You watch it every time it's on!🙂
Anderson though what a performance
Yvonne elliman as well
wow that is not auto tune....they are blasting those vocals...all 3... love
Talent, training and belief in the music.
All great singers know these are the foundations that no auto-tune program can recreate.
I was a young Christian when I saw this in the 70's.. Even though I'm now an atheist, I still enjoy this musical today.. it never gets old..
why you lost faith?
Jesus is waiting for you to come home to his open arms
This version is the best!
Love this movie. I always come back from time to time to hear this song. 🙏
Brilliant just Brilliant
Timeless Classic ❤
Best musical, ever!
Norman Jewison knew how to get the most out of his actors. The RAW and beautiful talent of all the actors still holds after all these years. I saw this originally in the movie house when it first came out. Just wonderful.
Every year around Easter I watch this scene. It always brings me to tears. The greatest scene ever registered on film.
This one is my favorite song from this musical. I love the way Mary Magdelene tries to soothe Jesus.
Ugh, so hard to pick a favorite
The acting in this scene by both Judas and Jesus actors is extraordinary.
I listened to the other versions of this song..... yeah this is by far the best and strongest. John Legend held his own, but Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson! Yes Indeed
So special❤ back then. Yvonne❤
It's so strange, when you view Mary's song through the eyes of a lover it feels off, but if you look at it through the eyes of a worried mother it makes sense
I absolutely hear this through the eyes of a lover. She’s a calming balm trying to relieve in the midst of pressure from life (represented by Judas)
I sing this song to my own lover (fiancé) when he is worried. Is not the role of a significant other to be the voice of reason, calm and quiet in the storm of our loved one’s lives?
2:31 Oh his eyes 🥺😭
This is really an amazing voice battle. The three of them had a stunning voice
This is definitely my favourite Jesus Christ Superstar movie. The acting and all the songs are exceptional.❤❤
This scene is profound Jesus has been away from man for 2,000 years and we are truly lost without Him - the world longs for your return Lord
When I hear people say money is wasted in building churches to worship the Lord Jesus. I now think of the words of Judas. We all have a little Judas in us if we do not worship. Lord of lords.
King of kings…❤️❤️❤️
I showed this movie to my religious grandmother ,she didn't understand English, but she was facinated seeing this great story!
I wonder if this superb and unreachable trio was aware they were performing one of the most iconic scene ever, a masterpiece both musically and cinematography…
So talented, fantastic voices, but above all embodied their roles perfectly, this is what makes this movie so special, one of my top three GOAT musicals.
One of the great things about JCSS, is that it humanizes all the characters, they don’t include the miracles/supernatural stuff, they focus on a man just trying yo make the world a better place and his followers and the disagreements between them, as well as the complicated political situation at the time with Judea being occupied by the Romans
It just makes it so that everyone, religious or non religious can really appreciate the story which itself is a beautiful and tragic story
What I love most about this song,
well firstly, despite what Mary is pleading, Jesus does not, or can not, close his eyes,
but what I love is that at the end of the song, it becomes almost mystical chantlike.
Every time I re-watch this movie, I either gain a deeper understanding, or I see another perspective from this scene, but from the first time I saw that look at 2:20, I've never stopped thinking about it.
This gives me CHILLS - i love it so much.
I am not a huge fan of this musical, but I love this song. I find it so calming.
That hand slide is so COLD I swear. 😅 This is my favorite song from the whole musical
Think while you still have me, move while you still see me
