Helen Reddy is pretty good, and so is Yvonne Elliman, but I really like how Mel C sings it. I'm not completely sure which is my favorite; they're all just so good for different reasons.
This character is too often played as a timid women in a mans world but I love this characterisation from Mel. She plays the character as words in the song describe her, a woman in control, running every show. A women of power and great strength, yet falling for Jesus in a way she has never let a man get to her before. Just a wonderful interpretation. I hope this sets the tone for all future characterisations of Mary
The whole characterization of Mary Magdalene is wrong. She wasn't a prostitute. She wasn't a fallen woman. Yes, she had been possessed by demons, and when Jesus drove them out, she became a Disciple. She was one of several affluent women who were followers and, frankly, sponsors of Jesus and His ministry. They financed Him and His Apostles. She was also ones to see Him die and the first to see Him after His Resurrection. She was devoted to Jesus and I'm convinced is sharing in His Glory in Heaven.
This is a spectacular performance, her voice... You can feel the passion , the song moves you, her voice is so strong it's amazing and she is absolutely gorgeous... Her looks and her voice captivate you She has the voice of an Angel, a goddess and I am proud to be a fan of hers. I've never ever heard a voice that makes you feel, but her voice and her passion makes you feel this in your stomach and heart. She is absolutely beautiful
This is just stunning. It starts out pretty typical, but her emotions drive a much deeper version of this than I have seen before... and the moment when she wipes off her makeup and then removes her jacket somehow tells a more meaningful story about how people are changed by Jesus than I have ever seen in JCS. Beautiful. Just beautiful.
her version is my favorite! i love the representation of her removing the heavy makeup and the jacket to a white dress, and the way she acts through that is just so beautiful
Wow!!! I have always thought only 1 person could EVER do this the justice it deserves & that was Yvonne Elliman BUT Melanie, Melanie, Melanie!! Where on earth did you hide this level of talent????? You not only gave this a whole new feeling, you absolutely blew it outta the park!! Amazing doesn't touch the sides imo!!!
She's by far the best actor in a musical i've ever seen, she sings flawlessly and yet she makes it so natural how someone would talk to them-self and try to figure out what to do. Still amazes me that she used to be a Spice Girl, she was clearly born to do broadway
Mel C does an absolutely incredible job. And yet as outstanding as it is, Yvonne Elliman's rendition is beyond perfection, and even better, if that is possible. This song melts my hardened heart and brings tears to my eyes.
If you were Mary Magdalene, an egregious sinner, who had just met God Almighty, and been forgiven and blessed by Him, would you not also feel this wonder, confusion, and love, all bound up in one unimaginable emotion? There is a reason why this song is always a showstopper. It hits us all in the heart.
Mary Magdalene was not a prostitute. Some lazy ass pope married her story with that of a prostitute. Mary was a rich woman, who supported Christ's ministry. He also removed 7 demons from her.
I really enjoyed Yvonne Elliman in the original movie but Mel C, in a different but equally powerful interpretation, really kills it. She has matured in her own right as a soloist and an amazing artist.
Melanie C was absolutely incredible as Mary. Such an underrated talent. I saw her in Blood Brothers also, again incredible and well deserved Olivier nomination for her performance
It wasn’t until once after the Spice Girls split up, I started to love other Spice girls outside/ from the group.... And one of them was Mel C.... I just loved Mel C MORE than the others!!! I always thought she had the BEST singing talents and voice!!! Because it’s very rare to have to have that kind of voice!!!!
WOW! just WOW! again. As someone old enough to remember the original film version, this is every bit as great and powerful. Magnificent even. And this from someone who made fame in the blandest of bland girl groups.
I never thought much of Mel C before this. The Spice Girls were way after my time. I figured this was going to be a train wreck. Boy was I wrong! Bravo Mel C! 👏👏👏
Basically it was four average singers who were pretty and one girl who was considered plain for the time (but would be attractive by 2010s standards now athleticism is more fashionable) and could sing. By their second album she was doing most of the singing
"I never thought I'd come to this What's it all about?" That part gives me the chills everytime I listen to it. Mel is brilliant here, absolutely brilliant.
BEEN A MONTH SINCE I HEARD THIS WOMAN SING THIS SONG.......SHES EVEN BETTER NOW.......SHE IS TELLING HER STORY.......SHE IS MARY.......MARY IS TELLING HER STORY......THIS HAS BEEN DONE PERFECT.......AS GOOD AS IT GETS
I saw the show in Birmingham, they were all brilliant but I was especially moved by Mel C, she was a revelation (no pun intended!) Beautiful, atmospheric, believable, I cried. All 3 leads were truly brilliant, the best musical I have ever seen & I’ve many. I regularly watch the DVD.
The best performance of this song that I have ever seen, particularly since so many performers just phone it in. Mel C. clearly conveys the emotions in her voice and expressions. Superb performance.
Well, that was a surprise! A bloody wonderful, uplifting, beautiful surprise. Who'd've thought a "Spice Girl" could sing like that? Wow, bloody WOW!!!!
Huge Jesus Christ Superstar fan and seen many different versions of it and she does an absolutely wonderful job I love the tone of her voice and the time that she takes with the song and the emotion that she brings out. She is singing about something that is completely new to her and profound in its depth and it comes out in her delivery.
I’ve been listening to performances of this song since about 1970. I’ve studied the performance of everyone who has done it. And there have been so many. This is hands down the absolute best.
Saw her live last weekend at Victorious Festival in Portsmouth. She has an amazing voice, her set was brilliant. She was so excited to be performing back in front of crowds again. Can't wait to see her again sometime.
I have enjoyed this song for 52 years. I even heard Helen Reddy live in Vegas. But this one is haunting, Melanie is so believable. Melanie is awesome. Whoever thought up the Kleenex moment deserves an award for that alone! I list to this often, every time it pops up on my you tube screen. Whatever Melanie does, I hope we in the States get to see and hear it to.
I was just listening to the movie soundtrack while driving this week and was reminded of the greatest of it. Nothing comes close to JCS on Broadway now, nothing at all.
I have heard this song, on and off stage, song with wonderful voices and no felling. As a lapsest catholic it has always pulled on my youth and what I was taught of Jesus, but when done right, it is a love song with so many layers. This is done right. Mel C, you nailed it.
I was raised a catholic & like many I lapsed over the years, but I have a personal spiritual relationship with Jesus having reread his inspirational words whether you believe he was just a man, a prophet or more. And I get moved by things like this in a way nothing else in modern life touches me. I think we are all spiritual beings that need a deeper connection than modern lives comprises. This show is everything that I could wish for in that spiritual search, all 3 leads were brilliant but Mel C for me was just absolutely stunning.
I don't know how to love him What to do, how to move him I've been changed, yes really changed In these past few days When I've seen myself I seem like someone else I don't know how to take this I don't see why he moves me He's a man, he's just a man And I've had so many men before In very many ways He's just one more Should I bring him down? Who in your opinion gave the best performance of this classic song? Let us know in the comments!
Can you please allow to us see the full musical again? Changed my life watch last year
Yvonne Elliman.
Sorry I don’t know how to spell it.
@@yasminmarques1508 Who knows, maybe we'll be able to see it on Easter again!
Helen Reddy is pretty good, and so is Yvonne Elliman, but I really like how Mel C sings it. I'm not completely sure which is my favorite; they're all just so good for different reasons.
I love Renee Castle’s performance
It’s how she goes from strong confident and unapproachable to vulnerable and even stronger… it’s flawless. Flawless I tell you
Perfect perspective of a perfect performance.
Hands down the most talented Spice Girl, with a completely unique voice.
That's a bit like being the best smelling nappy in a nursery tbh
@@rhdrbob what an idiot comment.
@@andreac980 How so?
The bar is not set very high in that regard but I take your point .
True....but that's not claiming much!!

Its really hard 2 make sense of a really twisted reality.

She not only sings well but also acts well. She is a complete artist.
Agreed. I’ve always loved her!
her version is my favorite! i love the representation of her removing the heavy makeup and the jacket to a white dress, and the way she acts through that is just so beautiful
@@scarlettrosewilson Agreed, she did that beautifully, it really brings MM to life.
Get behind me satan
She should be dance too.
Her voice and personality was made for this very role. I cannot recall a better role & singer/actress match.
I just watched Jesus Christ Superstar and OMG SHE'S MARVELOUS!
The best version of this song ever. You're not just listening to a song, but you can feel the emotion.
😂😂😂😂 as if..... not a patch on Yvonne Elliman vocals or emotion. This is the Weird Barbie version
@@SoundSista222I love both versions.
Yvonne still number 1.
Her version cannot be beat 🤷♀️
Have a listen to Angetha's version at 21. This does not come close!
The voice of the 90s. Such a beautiful unique sound.
That's... Really apt ❤
Mariana 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
✝️ Mariana 😍😍😍😍
I wasn't expecting to see Mel C singing this. I'm glad I found it. She was perfect for this. . .
Such emotional acting/singing, even when Jesus kisses her hand and she takes a 'quickening breath'. Marvelous rendition. Felt I was there.
I hadn't noticed that, thanks for pointing it out. A beautiful moment, well done!
😂
Mel's voice is so comforting.
Soft yet strong. Mel C was my favorite spice girl.
I know exactly what you mean.

Yeap, very meritoriously sung and interpretated, but Yvonne's original still is #1 for me
she had the best voice in the spice girls
You were right the first time this one is nasal and lacks emotion this is Wierd Barbie version
Nobody beats Yvonne’s version. It’s flawless and filled with emotion and voice was absolutely perfect
Now I remember why I fell in love with Mel C 20 years ago. And she only gets better with age.
Agreed. Mel B, too!
She's by far the best actor in a musical i've ever seen, she sings flawlessly and yet she makes it so natural how someone would talk to them-self and try to figure out what to do. Still amazes me that she used to be a Spice Girl, she was clearly born to do broadway

When it's done this well it makes me tear up, I'm not even Christian but it's so beautiful

I heard this song a hundred times thinking it was alright but that was amazing. It proves its not the song it’s the singer.
All I can say is that is a GREAT interpretation of Mary Magdalene.
Love you Mel C. Brilliance!!
Shes such a great singer.... I miss the spice Girls when I hear her voice...
Mad new respect for Mel C! She KILLED it in this role.
performed with such emotion and depth

Her voice and performance here are so honest. This is lovely
This renews my amazement with these old, wonderful musics.

Yes it is.
who's her now???
Simply marvellous, I feel moved by her performance of this emotional song !

Yvonne Elliman’s original performance as Mary Magdalene will always be my favorite. When she sang this song, it was mesmerizing.
Absolutely excellent, Melanie.

Absolute brilliance! Love Sporty. X
I was just listening to the movie soundtrack while driving this week and was reminded of the greatest of it. Nothing comes close to JCS on Broadway now, nothing at all.
Still gave me goosebumps...... was a part of JCS in 1996....
The movie version by Yvonne Elliman is the purest raw emotion necessary for this song
Really enjoyed this 👌🏻 emotionality was amazing
Thats sounds amazinng ... Never knew she was in JCSS
I love her version, well done Mel C.
A really emotional performance.

Mel C brought me to tears. Just saw it live yesterday and that singer was great … but Mel brought heartfelt emotion!!
I don't know how to love him
What to do, how to move him
I've been changed, yes really changed
In these past few days
When I've seen myself
I seem like someone else
I don't know how to take this
I don't see why he moves me
He's a man, he's just a man
And I've had so many men before
In very many ways
He's just one more
Should I bring him down?
Should I scream and shout?
Should I speak of love?
Let my feelings out?
I never thought I'd come to this
What's it all about?
Don't you think it's rather funny?
I should be in this position
I'm the one who's always been
So calm, so cool
No lover's fool
Running every show
He scares me so
I never thought I'd come to this
What's it all about?
Yet, if he said he loved me
I'd be lost, I'd be frightened
I couldn't cope, just couldn't cope
I'd turn my head, I'd back away
I wouldn't want to know
He scares me so
I want him so
I love him so
Unquestionably the best performance of this amazing song, ever. She is amazing.
Love Mel C & her fabulous singing voice, she is a fine actor also! So glad to find this on RUclips ❣️
Absolutely brilliant
Mel C certainly brought tears to my eyes, specially when she wiped her eye makeup. I don't really care about other opinions, for me she is the best MM ever
She has a wonderful stage voice and such intensity in this delivery.
I love the way she sings. She looks absolutely beautiful as well.
She just turned 50! Happy birthday Mel C 🎉
