Minchin's portrayal of Judas in this is one of the best things I've ever seen. The satire of the piece, combined with Minchin's atheism, combine here impeccably. In "Heaven on Their Minds," you can see he's basically exasperated (as the role calls for). Here, however, he's deadly in earnest. The same questions, the still paucity of irrefutable answers. And yet, despite the frustration, the pain, the doubts, he still loves his friend Jesus. When Jesus is raised up on the cross, he's on his knees, begging, shouting up to the sky, to Jesus, to God, to the Universe, to anyone that'll listen. You don't get to really see into the eyes of most actors in a stage production, but the sheer intensity in Minchin's Judas, especially in this piece, is utterly beautiful.

@@allanmoorhead9492 lol JCS was written by atheists and was highly controversial when it first came out due to its use of rock music with the Lord. If you think otherwise, you clearly weren't paying attention to the lyrics Heaven on Their Minds and this number
@@TheBabysittersReview I know Tim Rice was an atheist and I'm perfectly aware that the musical/opera is written from an atheist perspective. I have listened to JCS since it was first released. I own about fifteen different versions of it. Webber at the time classed himself as agnostic and said he admired Jesus as a great historical figure. It wasn't intended as openly gratuitous atheist propaganda. Minchin completely spoils this number by letting his atheism show. It's performed as a corny "song and dance" routine, like King Herod's Song. Herod really was ridiculing and condemning Jesus. This is supposed to be the grand finally of the opera, a highly emotive and stirring number, and Minchin kills all of that. Judas is not celebrating Jesus's death, he is lamenting Jesus's demise and questioning him about the way he acted, though the lyrics contain a lot of irony. He was Jesus's friend, and he committed suicide out of guilt at betraying him to his death. This song is not supposed to take place at his crucifixion, but immediately before it, after he is sentenced to die. In this version they are making a joke out of Jesus's death. Wrong! And that awful singing! No wonder Minchin stuck to comedy. The backing singers are better than him! Why would you cast a comedian in a main role in an opera? Along with those terrible dancers and choreography lol. What did they hire strippers for that? And look at the budget set! Were the set designers on strike? I don't know why Webber approved all of this. Perhaps he is doing it just for the money now, like George Lucas.
@@allanmoorhead9492 Agreed. This feels so blasphemous and gross. I have yet to get okay vibes from any JCS performance besides the original movie (I have only seen a few clips of performances so far though). I won't let this performance ruin the original for me despite how sickening it is.
@@Lablbobla JCS was always blasphemous in the sense that it denies the divinity of Jesus and portrays him as a victim and his death as futile. It was written from an atheist perspective (though Webber said he was agnostic). Yet the early performances, at least, told a story with characters who were treated sympathetically and with dignity. Jesus wasn't spat upon or portrayed as a clown. The events are portrayed as tragic, not humorous. It was a dramatic and emotional production in its own right. This performance starring Minchin is just a militant atheist's wet dream which openly spits upon the Gospels. There's no emotion in it - it's done for cheap laughs. And it's outright awful - the singing, the choreography, the costumes, the set. It looks like a bad high school drama student musical.
Can we just take a second to appreciate the choreography in this scene? It appears to be relatively simple (I'm not a dancer so I don't know if this is considered hard) but it's still amazing and captivating
To me the hardest bits look like the parts where they stop dancing and pose with their sticks to sing the chorus. It's really difficult to suddenly stop dancing and sharply hit a pose without wobbling, and they nailed it. Watch the dancer in the bottom left at 2:33!!
Tim is the perfect Judas. And he left everything on that stage. The others were great too but he really just goes for anything he does and its so good.
I hear that. I did a production of the show on a raked stage - meaning the floor was _slanted_ toward the audience (not a gradual rake - it was built to a _steep_ rake so going upstage was _literally_ up like climbing a hill) and there was one dance moment where we had to bend back and touch the floor behind us and rebound right back up. Easy the first time facing downstage, not so much repeating the choreography for the second verse blocked facing _upstage._ First run on the set everyone forgot and there was quite the avalanche of people falling and sliding toward the orchestra pit... They had to reblock so both backbends happened facing downstage.
judas, literally like 2 songs ago: *gosh i feel guilty. yikes i’m depressed now lmao bye* judas after god gave him the seal of approval: *happy tambourine oh look jesus is dying lolz* i’m not even religious but we do love judas
To be fair, this song it's the Writers singing through Judas. Since I don't know Judas would know about the future of mass communication, and all the rest. But he grooving haahahaha
I'm not sure if I read this or watched something about it but I think that this scene takes place in Jesus's mind; due to the first words of the song being the last words Judas ever spoke to him - "Every time i look at you i don't understand...". What makes it more tragic is that Jesus never knew of Judas' suicide, so he probably thought Judas was celebratory :) Also that Tamborine is my hero.
I watched the full Jesus Christ Superstar on Friday night and also way back in 1973 on the Westend (It was a school trip) Ben Forster, Tim Minchin, Mel C and Chris Moyles were excellent. I can't wait to see what's on this coming Friday
I watched it 4 times. And ordered the DVD yesterday. I've loved JCS since my mom (a musician, singer, and instrumental music teacher) brought home the original LP in 1970. This is by far the most powerful version I've ever seen. I'm still emotionally raw.
He was absolutely incredible!!! Very intense gaze and acting. Perfection. After seeing him super mad during the show when he smiles a bit during this performance I HAD to smile with him😍
There's something about live theatre, even on a screen, that's just next-level compared to even the best films. It's like when you're told something in a movie is a practical effect, and you enjoy it even more the next time round. Except it's not retroactive and it's the full performance. Like, acting or no, staged or not, we just witnessed Judas descend from on high to ask really the only question that must be left in Jesus' head: do you think you're the real deal, that all this will be worth it? Theatre rocks. It's older than mud and will outlive all other art!
I always love the original movie version to the point where I never liked any other version, but this performance here and Tim Minchin just blew me away! bravo!
I love the music, the singing, and of course Minchin. But the thing that especially impresses me is those angels dancing up and down the steps without tripping or falling over. 😯
This movie helped me to understand this part of Jesus' story as a teen. Your voice is as hauntingly beautiful as it was in 1973. Probably more so as you have 50 more years of life experience. Bless you. ❤
Tim is wonderful but I also think Ben as Jesus is simply magnificent. As someone who's not particularly a fan of musicals, I think this is without doubt the greatest musical ever written.
I've seen more productions of JCS than I could possibly count. This staging is without a doubt the most powerful -- and poignant -- I've ever seen. It strips away every bit of pretense and lays the entire story bare. It's the first time Judas's fracturing love for Jesus is portrayed. People always portray Judas as a cartoonish jealous & "evil" character -- which is far from the truth. Tim Minchin was able to tease the nuances from the text and give us a much more interesting, much more painfully real Judas. WoW.
Shirley Lee I love him singing that, too! I found that it’s in the “Unmasked: The Platinum Collection” album that has a bunch of different tracks of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s works. Tim Minchin singing “Heaven on Their Minds” is on that album
Nicole Ziege thank you for sharing this. I will track down a copy of the album now. I wish they had made a recording of this cast’s version of the show
Crank this baby up! Every single singer was the epitome of perfection! Perfectly cast. Tim is a rockstar! They all are. It is the best musical you will ever see or hear. Bravo!!!🎉🎉🎉
this whole production just is so absolutely, utterly 2012. it screams, oozes and fumes of 2012. The costumes, the set design, the coreography, the choices that were made, the costumes again, just sooo 2012... and i love it hehe :)
I LOVE the art direction on this. As person living in the south I am soooooooo fed up with Judus' background dancers being devils instead of angels. Every church related production makes that switch, and it infuriates me. It changes the tone of the moment. So that's one win. But the light up cross?!?!? Just as effective as the filmwork of the original, in a different way, but equally brilliant. Wish I could have seen this live!!!!
The thing I always loved about Jesus Christ Superstar is there's a million movies about the torture and resurrection of Jesus, but so few about who he was before he died, and nearly none about Judas' motives, aside from greed. Also, Judas is bae, he was bae in the old VHS I rented (stole) from Blockbuster, and he's bae in the newer one.
Just a quick note about the auto tune Yeah it’s bad but just appreciate the sensational singers where you can. Tim Minchin’s Judas brings a lot of of life and emotion to the role. He’s a fantastic singer, and an amazing actor! I think I’ve seen maybe 3 or 4 JCS and I think this is still my favourite one... so far
@@louiscollett1429 Yes.. but the audio we get now is not... (ofc) And in post production for one reason or another the production team went in and worked the audio. Most likely to make it more even and "flat".. to make it easier for broadcasting/home video production.

Tim is an amazing performer. He really delivers here especially for someone who seems to be marketing himself as a comic musician according to Wikipedia
I had the pleasure of watching this same performance live in Melbourne and it's the best rendition of JCS I've seen (and I've seen 4 different ones). The Superstar sequence is beyond brilliant. Minchin's performance and the choreography are excellent. The Director (or even Lloyd Webber) paid tribute to Bob Fosse with the dance moves using batons and high hats. Very classy indeed

I was so happy when I saw this was on around Easter. So this was my first time ever seeing it :) This show and staging got me fascinated by second 5 and then Tim Minchin as Judas blew my mind. Wonderful raw and honest performance. And I am not gonna lie: he is hot as hell :D!!!
Which is interesting as now Ben Foster is a huge west end star. He also had a lot more training. But yes Tim is probably the most believable Judas ever. Highlights the internal conflict very well.
Tim was incredible !!! By chance I got to get to watch this, am hooked and can't wait for next friday and what a great intro for my son, to the world of theatre and acting - thank you for sharing .
We watched the show on Sunday evening in Australia and I also saw it in 1973 in London and still have the wonderful programme with libretto. We were absolutely blown away by the whole thing and it was certainly a very different production from the first one. The acting and the singing, especially the magnificent Tim Minchin, were incredible and the stage was mind-blowing. Thank you so much for offering this for free.
When I first started watching I wasn’t sure I would enjoy it but it was so moving and the cast were fantastic. I didn’t realise Tim Minchin was such a fabulous singer and also Chris Moyles - what brilliant casting!
How in the **** does Tim Minchin not do more acting? He is amazing all through this production, he is stealing every scene he is in. He is so expressive! I would really love to see him on stage or on film! 🙏🙏🙏😍😍 And then his voice is amazing as well! He is the reason I’ve watched this particulary production countless times 🙏🙏🙏
Some of his non-comedy songs (written while he was doing this) and some interviews he's done have done a beautiful job of explaining why: Hollywood and Broadway are both brutal, and one of the reasons Tim is so good is because he's such a sensitive soul who really throws his all into any work he does. The cancellations, the rejections, and even the successes blooming around him were like poisoned fruit. He's doing much better back in Oz. So we can expect to see more from him through Australian productions, but it won't be Broadway sadly. Tbh, I respect him so much for having realised how it was affecting him, and making that decision. Definitely a rolemodel as far as I'm concerned!
While the 1992 Australian cast is my favorite recording, this version may be my favorite live version. Everything is perfect. I have watched this so many times in the past 24 hours.

Every actor/singer dreams of an entrance and a voice and a song like that!
It’s the synchro that’s hard
Getting any dance clean is the toughest part
Tim is the perfect Judas. And he left everything on that stage. The others were great too but he really just goes for anything he does and its so good.
i just give props to the girls doing all the choreography on stairs
Right!? I count myself lucky when I go downstairs without any mild panic. But dance on em....? Pfffffff, no thanks
In heels-
I hear that.
Did Joseph on stairs. Thankfully the choreography was simple enough
On live TV I had to walk down 1 step whilst singing and eye balling the camera. I found that stressful let alone something like this 😂
judas, literally like 2 songs ago: *gosh i feel guilty. yikes i’m depressed now lmao bye*
judas after god gave him the seal of approval: *happy tambourine oh look jesus is dying lolz*
i’m not even religious but we do love judas
To be fair, this song it's the Writers singing through Judas. Since I don't know Judas would know about the future of mass communication, and all the rest.
But he grooving haahahaha
I'm not sure if I read this or watched something about it but I think that this scene takes place in Jesus's mind; due to the first words of the song being the last words Judas ever spoke to him - "Every time i look at you i don't understand...". What makes it more tragic is that Jesus never knew of Judas' suicide, so he probably thought Judas was celebratory :)
Also that Tamborine is my hero.
lol happy tamborine, that killed me :-)
The clue is in the words of the song "If you'd come today". The song is being sung 2000 years after the Crucifixion.
Uhhhh no........ no we don’t but ok
Kind of sad it didn't stay on for the whole of Easter day, had been looking forward to putting this on after dinner.
Same same!
that British time zone 👊😔
Same
its back on!
Round 2!
jesus: crying and sobbing and bleeding out in total pain and agony
judas: 🕺🏾💃✨
I have no clue why Tim Minchin playing the tambourine brings me so much joy, but I love it. Also they got him to wear shoes!
I think it would have been cool if they hadn’t add him wear the shoes
Tim was the best part of this entire production! So amazing.
I watched the full Jesus Christ Superstar on Friday night and also way back in 1973 on the Westend (It was a school trip) Ben Forster, Tim Minchin, Mel C and Chris Moyles were excellent. I can't wait to see what's on this coming Friday
I'm so excited omg
Phantom of the opera is next
@@Esgles the 1998 Cats is more likely first.
@@colliric or evita
@@colliric It's Phantom it's been confirmed. And thankfully it's the 2011 broadway anniversary one and not the awful Gerard Butler movie.
I watched it 4 times. And ordered the DVD yesterday. I've loved JCS since my mom (a musician, singer, and instrumental music teacher) brought home the original LP in 1970. This is by far the most powerful version I've ever seen. I'm still emotionally raw.
Just when I think I'm over my JCS obsession, RUclips recommendation smacks me right in the face with this gem
Bless whoever decided Superstar will be uploaded. Minchin is such unique Judas
the show had more than music stars, they are perfect artists and it was an honor to be able to watch them Friday
Love how invested everyone is in this performance. The angels, the guys with bowler hats, and Tim Minchin. Too bad I can't get this on spotify.
I WATCHED THIS THREE TIMES IN 24 HOURS!!!! ANd once lockdown is over, I'm buying the DVD to watch it again. Tim was SPECTACULAR!!!!!
I just bought the DVD on Amazon yesterday!! It wasn’t even delayed shipping either, it’s gonna arrive around Friday!!
We have bought this on Amazon Prime and watched it back to back just now! (Not for the first time, certainly not for the last either!)
So sad this version wasn't made into an album!
I know! Tim Minchin is the absolutely owned this performance.
You can also find Mel C singing “I Don’t Know How To Love Him” on her album Stages - it’s on iTunes!
It’s on RUclips
They did when they realized the "remastered audio" version for the DVD which is HEAVY autotune and pitch correction.
He was absolutely incredible!!! Very intense gaze and acting. Perfection. After seeing him super mad during the show when he smiles a bit during this performance I HAD to smile with him😍
Tim made the character Judas so dynamic. Definetly my favorite Judas by far.
Bless you. ❤
I've loved this song for years in many versions. First time watching this one and I'm completely blown away! That was amazing!
Loved Tim’s act. Pure gold
+And he has that judas look, you know
just remember, Judas is dead in this song canonically
Seems pretty lively to me
Looks like he descended from heaven to mock Jesus with an army of beautiful women.
@@G.Lonnie yes but a few songs prior he hung himself
It's only a musical, it's not actually real 🙄
@@markdacey3950 It's more real than the religion is.
Tim is wonderful but I also think Ben as Jesus is simply magnificent. As someone who's not particularly a fan of musicals, I think this is without doubt the greatest musical ever written.
Be like Pontius Pilate, WASH YOUR HANDS!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Well played.
🤣👍🏻
20 seconds at least.... sing Happy Birthday twice.... don't skimp on the soap... brush under the nails....
Omg. Best. Comment. Of the week. A++++
This is both my favorite version of the song and my favorite part of Tim's performance. Just look at the fricking insanity on stage.
I knew Tim was an amazing singer but this show really put it into perspective for me. Like wow. I just... damn!
WoW.
Because Judas is the only realistic character in the entire Bible. Everything else was "holier than thou" rubbish
When you're about to be crucified but you accidentally end up at a party.
THE LAST JEDI 😂😂😂
Oh dear, looks like your dead ex-best friend/traitor shows up. Way to kill the mood
That I personally didn’t care for
Jesus loves you repent and trust in him and you will be saved !!
One more like for the worst number ever on a video like this lol
Watched the whole show over and over. My absolute favourite musical ever !!!💖💖🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Yeah one of my favourite musicals as well
@Jo O’Brien its in 2 weeks and hasn't been announced x
I still get the chills watching this. I needed my Minchin fix and some amazing stage work today.
Tim Minchin was just incredible!!! In fact all of the cast were amazing! I may have to purchase this version to watch on a regular basis!
Tim Minchin is the best Judas actor I've ever seen.
Please also upload Heaven On Their Minds please???? I need to replay it for 9 million times
I wish they had made a recording of this cast’s version of the show
There is one of Tim singing heaven on their minds or atleast there was. I've watched it several times over the last few days.
Siany Bella thanks, I’ll see if I can track it down today
Have you seen Tim’s performance of Superstar introduced by Michael Ball? IMO it’s even better than this - and no auto tune
1:54
producer: QUICK TURN THE AUTOTUNE OFF BEFORE HE SCREA-
...no? Ok
JoshRibena jajajaajjaajaj
How am I only seeing this now? I seriously can't handle how hard Tim killed this role. My face has melted
IKR
Same here. I've had this on repeat for like 5 hours
This might be my favorite song from Jesus Christ superstar. I love Tim Minchin so much
Crank this baby up!
OMG! What a superb rendition! Need to see this completely, I bet Judas stole the whole show! 💛💛💛
Blown away by Tim on Friday !!!! He was absolutely amazing
Such a powerful show when performed to tHis incredible level
This version sent shivers throughout my body. Great job wow
Just a quick note about the auto tune
Yeah it’s bad but just appreciate the sensational singers where you can.
Tim Minchin’s Judas brings a lot of of life and emotion to the role. He’s a fantastic singer, and an amazing actor! I think I’ve seen maybe 3 or 4 JCS and I think this is still my favourite one... so far
David it was live
@@louiscollett1429 Yes.. but the audio we get now is not... (ofc) And in post production for one reason or another the production team went in and worked the audio. Most likely to make it more even and "flat".. to make it easier for broadcasting/home video production.
LFC FOREVER I know it was live, I saw the show when it came to Melbourne in Victoria
Have you seen the movie from the 70s? That's pretty epic too
@@joeypotter6051 Not to be a bitch, but that movie made me HATE the musical before I chanced a glimpse at a different version. It's a disjointed mess with just flat-out bad vocal performances (not sorry, Ted Neeley stans) & the only saving grace is Carl Anderson's Judas.
I Just watched this performance yesterday on Broadway HD. One of my favorite plays but this was the best rendition ! I cried a few times! Cast was fabulous!
We watched this twice over the weekend. Sheer brilliance from start to finish....
This production brought me to tears several times. So great that you’ve made it available to the multitudes. Many many thanks. ❤️❤️
AH DANG, i was hoping to catch it to watch it one more time before it got taken down... oh well, i had the pleasure of watching it 3 times. also, TIM IS MY FAVE JUDAS.
Caralee Pending ??
tim minchin forever my favourite judas iscariot ❤️
It's just amazing.... One of the most publicly active atheist showmen.... (he's always made public that he doesn't believe in the divinity of JC, although I don't know if he believes in the historicity of JC or he is a mythicist)... and here he is playing Judas. I wonder what was the reaction of the religious people that dislike him! (and he has been exposed to antagonism by some)
I have watched this so many fucking times I’m addicted to Tim Minchin in this production he’s so electric
Very classy indeed
i actually travelled from Brisbane to Melbourne to see this show as it was completely sold out there. i really regret not picking up a programme. They did an amazing job modernising the setting
Loved the show so much that I watched it four times... and ordered the blue-ray... Tim on repeat!
Lola the Bola Omg literally same! I watched on the Friday and Saturday and then again today... then bought on blue ray! I remember watching back in 2012 but it feels like I’ve just been introduced to it again!
I bought the RUclips video rather than dvd, it was incredible could watch it everyday.
Me too. Bought it via Amazon Prime and have the whole musical via soundcloud on repeat all day :D
Yes this whole production was really amazing and such a wonderful Easter gift! My first time seeing this show the entire way through and now I love it. The actors, the singing, the graphics, the stage and set - so good! Thanks and I so look forward to what comes next week!
I was so happy when I saw this was on around Easter. Loved the musical since I first heard the CD during my early teen days and always loved Heaven on their Minds!, but never got to watch a live performance of this or a stage show. So this was my first time ever seeing it :) This show and staging got me fascinated by second 5 and then Tim Minchin as Judas blew my mind. Wonderful raw and honest performance. And I am not gonna lie: he is hot as hell :D!!!
Tim’s giving off some great Riff Raff vibes! Rocky Horror anyone? ❤❤
Tim Minchin was the saving grace (no pun intended) of this version for me.
Mel C. Same
Which is interesting as now Ben Foster is a huge west end star. He also had a lot more training. But yes Tim is probably the most believable Judas ever. Highlights the internal conflict very well.
Mel C. Mel C. is what did it for me. Talented and hot...
This is why I have 2 copies of this masterpiece on dvd, 1 was not enough
(#99) He was an awesome Judas!!! Loved this version just as the 1970s version!
Tim was incredible !!! By chance I got to get to watch this, am hooked and can't wait for next friday and what a great intro for my son, to the world of theatre and acting - thank you for sharing .
We did a Group Viewing on Saturday with friends in Maui, New York and Manila. Wow, what a great performance! Looking forward to the next one.
May God have Mercy on your soul Amen Amen Amen
I watched the full performance and it was so good! Thank you so much for doing this!
And then his voice is amazing as well! He is the reason I’ve watched this particulary production countless times 🙏🙏🙏
He’s in a tv series called Upright which is supposed to be good
Some of his non-comedy songs (written while he was doing this) and some interviews he's done have done a beautiful job of explaining why: Hollywood and Broadway are both brutal, and one of the reasons Tim is so good is because he's such a sensitive soul who really throws his all into any work he does.
This was one of my favorite scenes in the original musical and Tim Minchin played the role well.
Finally, the savage treatment this song has been waiting for since the show's inception! I didn't know I needed it until I watched it.
One of Perth’s best exports 🖤
Yarn Campbell Northampton England’s finest, you guys just borrowed him 😉
I really love tim minchin's version.... it is my top of list
Absolutely love this show love this song love Tim Minchin ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ oh and of course love Andrew Lloyd Webber ❤️❤️❤️❤️
While the 1992 Australian cast is my favorite recording, this version may be my favorite live version. Everything is perfect. I have watched this so many times in the past 24 hours.
Tim Minchin does a great job as Judas. His expressions are fantastic!
