"Love without evidence is.. well.. stalking"
-Tim Minchin
Actually this one I first heard from either Dawkins or Krauss
He's saying if you believe and act as if someone else loves you when you have no evidence that they do, then it's stalking.
@@NYsummertimeCHI Kinda impressive that @Dan ofDunolly reinforced your point before you made it. Though your definition is kind of centered on celebrity stalking, rather than the kind that's most common - being stalked by someone you know, who you probably have had to reject several times. But I would agree that's closer to the type Tim is invoking in that lyric.
But talk about an excellent example of how language around matters of consent is very important, and when we as a society use language that supports the predator more than the victim, it's only making things worse. Because, while I'm sure Dan was being sarcastic in saying stalking is proof of unrequited love, that's genuinely what some people would argue is linguistically correct. But they'd be wrong.
Evidence of unrequited love is when the claim of love is made and the other person rejects it or otherwise makes clear that it's not returned - or in the case of celeb or distance stalking, the evidence is that the stalker thinks they genuinely love a person they do not know. People all across the globe love someone who doesn't want them, and they just move on or pine in private, without doing anything that could make the person they claim to love feel uncomfortable, creeped-out or genuinely afraid for their safety. They do not stalk or otherwise harass, and their love isn't lacking in evidence for it.
Stalking is proof that it's not love at all, but obsession and compulsion that's born of a need to control or possess what you cannot have, much how domestic violence is about the need to control what you are afraid of losing. Just like rape isn't about sex, stalking is not remotely about love or affection. Because if you actually love someone, you want them to be happy, even if what would make them happy is never seeing your face again.

I was raised Southern Baptist in the American South. When I deconstructed my faith and became an atheist it really upset a lot of my Christian friends. They would ask me questions that, although annoying, were sincere and I was happy, or perhaps more accurately "obliged" to answer them. I was once asked if I didn't miss the wonderful feeling that Christians get when listening to "praise music". I tell them that I have music that gives me those feelings as an atheist and then I point them to this video. This is atheist praise music of the highest quality!
What made you become an atheist?
@@gorb_oron Reading the Bible, studying science and being immersed and marinated in Christofascism growing up in Mississippi drove me out of the Christian faith. Once that happened and I felt liberated and free to form my own mind, I discovered that atheism was the best fit for me.
@@tampazeke4587 do you think it’s possible that there’s a higher power that’s not the Christian God
@@gorb_oron I don't know. All I can say is that I've seen no demonstrable, measurable evidence that would meet minimal scientific standards, presented to lead me to believe that there is an intelligent "higher power" that creates or controls or destroys with intention. I do believe in time, energy, mass and the laws of nature that regulate their interactions. I could see that there could be a natural law of karma as of yet undiscovered but I have to be as agnostic about that as I am about gods until more repeatable and measurable scientific evidence is discovered and presented.
If you like "atheist praise music", might I reccomend "Don't Look Down" by the Divine Comedy. Very similar vibes to this one.

@Stuart Bowes yes, get a useless dig in as you can't even get past creation. In various threads you're enjoying your long pussy rubs avoiding how you got around the laws.
Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it.

That's why he draws into tracks not just people who like funny stuff but some real serious musical nerd geeks who may not even know it - once you find yourself marveling over the internal rhyme and structure while he's singing about cheese then you know you've reached a subgroup that you belong in if you're thrilled to be there. He just died but I think Stephen Sondheim and he would have an amazing amount in common based on the musical style of both, as well as Mozart which they both credit but then I can also pull Green Day into this argument if you like so I'll stop here.
When will people get over the stupid concept that is something is funny it is not to be taken seriously or called art? If you have to call it any label at all it's philosophy these days, we've come a long way since take my wife please.
I think people respond hugely to intelligence which people like Bo Burnham over in the United States and wordy people who are very good with the internal rhyming and structure of it all as well as the musical genius - but we don't bother to study music because it's more important to study things like bombs and physics and romance languages I guess I don't know I think all the money should be for music but when it's my turn to be in charge, I'd probably just be happy with a nice karaoke group to sing with - I have to add that it's a special talent that also overlaps with green days ability for Billy Joe all 5'5 of him to run around and own a stadium the way Tim played to a crowd of enormous proportions unheard of for comedy shows except Monty Python until fairly recently. I was hoping that he'd have a lot of stuff out on Netflix since I didn't find him for ages and I'm in America but there's the only one more.

“Science adjusts its views based on what's observed
Faith is the denial of observation so that belief can be preserved."― Tim Minchin
Tim does not know what biblical faith is because he just does not care to know but he'd rather fart out lies.
Biblically, faith means trust. It's a trust by evidence seen. God asks that we prove things. To reason. To get knowledge. To study. God has nothing to hide. We develop trust from what is seen, and that which is not seen yet is trusted also because of the trust built up from what is seen. It's much like a human relationship. We don't trust much until a person has gained that trust from what is observed. The difference is though, God is not limited to human powers. He created us.
Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
His opening of "Science adjusts its views based on what's observed"
Tim is a liar. He believes his god of nothing did miracles naturally with nothing as proof it could. He cares NOTHING about what is observed. What a hypocrite!
His god claims to have given us the creation of the universe, fine-tuning of the universe for life on earth, life from non-life, information for life before and after it began, the laws of nature without a Lawgiver, etc, etc, when we know that your god of nothing can do nothing. His god of nothing has nothing to offer and its followers only offer nothing of evidence for their god of nothing. That makes him nothing of importance but the followers of the god of nothing are so delusional that they think they do have something to offer to defend their god of nothing.
@S oh wait, someone new joins in to prove me wrong with such great evidence as....
"You people are so tiresome."
Such deep thought put into that.
This was the first time I have even seen Tim Minchin. I laughed so hard I actually cried. What a fabulous and elaborate mockery. And I thought family guy was snarky. Bless this man who heard an example of a "miracle" and instead of saying, "I think there might be some confirmation bias or error in the first diagnosis," thought, "okay guys, I'm going to need an auditorium, a grand piano, and an orchestra to tell you how silly that was."

He didn't have such luck when I saw him live 😅 it was the last stop on his recent tour and he was so damn ill, he had to run off stage mid song to blow his nose, came back with a bottle of vodka, poured two shots and gave one to an audience member. Then later on he was singing prejudice, forgot the words and had to half sing the beginning of the song to remember the next ones. Eh, fair enough.
it's more than that. it's giving the middle finger and being backed up by an orchestra when you do it..... Imagine if that just happened all the time. every time you to and tell someone to go fuck themselves, there's an epic crescendo in the background.
Katherine Daniel I guess one needs an orchestra when one tells god to go fuck himself. It seems apt.

It's an act. Sam doesn't exist ;)
@@Reggie1408 he does, Tim said so in an interview. "Storm" from the poem does not exist though
He isn't roasting "someone", he's roasting god, so writing an entire song, composing that song, getting an entire orchestra and being in a show in a concert hall isn't so much over the top.
It's not to roast Sam though. He's just an example, a prompt for the topic. He just wanted to expose the flaws in the logic of those who think that God exists just because of random fortunate situations while the world is so fucked up. The world is full of Sams. I had a friend in school, she and all her family were also Evangelics. One day she told me she knew God existed because her sister was born with a condition and the doctors told them she would not live to be 5 years old, but she was a grown woman with kids. I told her the doctors could be wrong but she insisted she got several tests and then got suddenly cured. I then told her, since it was recent events at the time, why would God cure just one little girl but let hundreds die in an earthquake in Haiti. Her response was that "many people in that area believed in black magic and other practices so maybe God wasn't up to that". I dropped the topic after letting her know that in that case her God was a hard pass to me then. She also told me one guy in her community was cured of homosexuality after they all prayed for him as if anyone wouldn't fake to be straight so that they could be left alone in that situation. What a joyous faith.
That must be true love ☺

I have an apology to make
I'm afraid I've made a big mistake
I turned my face away from you, Lord
I was too blind to see the light
I was too meek to feel Your might
I closed my eyes; I couldn't see the truth, Lord
But then like Saul on the Damascus road,
You sent a messenger to me, and so
Now I've have had the truth revealed to me
Please forgive me all those things I said
I'll no longer betray you, Lord
I will pray to you instead
And I will say thank you, thank you
Thank you, God
Thank you, thank you
Thank you, God...
Thank you, God, for fixing the cataracts of Sam's mum
I had no idea, but it's suddenly so clear now
I feel such a cynic, how could I have been so wrong?
Thank you for displaying how praying works:
A particular prayer in a particular church
Thank you Sam for the chance to acknowledge this
Omnipotent ophthalmologist
Thank you, God, for fixing the cataracts of Sam's mum
I didn't realize that it was so simple
But you've shown a great example of just how it can be done
You only need to pray in a particular spot
To a particular version of a particular god,
And if you pull that off without a hitch,
He will fix one eye of one middle-class white bitch
I know in the past my outlook has been limited
I couldn't see examples of where life had been definitive
But I can admit it when the evidence is clear,
As clear as Sam's mum's new cornea
(And that's extremely clear! )
Thank you, God, for fixing the cataracts of Sam's mum
I have to admit that in the past I have been skeptical
But Sam described this miracle and I am overcome!
How fitting that the sighting of a sight-based intervention
Should open my eyes to this exciting new dimension
It's like someone put an eye chart up in front of me
And the top five letters say: I C, G O D
Thank you, Sam, for showing how my point of view has been so flawed
I assumed there was no God at all but now I see that's cynical
It's simply that his interests aren't particularly broad
He's largely undiverted by the starving masses,
Or the inequality between the various classes
He gives out strictly limited passes,
Redeemable for surgery or two-for-one glasses
I feel so shocking for historically mocking
Your interests are clearly confined to the ocular
I bet given the chance, you'd eschew the divine
And start a little business selling contacts online
Fuck me Sam, what are the odds
That of history's endless parade of gods
That the God you just happened to be taught to believe in
Is the actual God and he digs on healing,
But not the AIDS-ridden African nations
Nor the victims of the plague, nor the flood-addled Asians,
But healthy, privately-insured Australians
With common and curable lens degeneration
The story of Sam's has but a single explanation:
A surgical God who digs on magic operations
No, it couldn't be mistaken attribution of causation
Born of a coincidental temporal correlation
Exacerbated by a general lack of education
Vis-a-vis physics in Sam's parish congregation
No it couldn't be that all these pious people are liars
It couldn't be an artifact of confirmation bias
A product of groupthink,
A mass delusion,
An Emperor's New Clothes-style fear of exclusion
No, it's more likely to be an all-powerful magician
Than the misdiagnosis of the initial condition,
Or one of many cases of spontaneous remission,
Or a record-keeping glitch by the local physician
No, the only explanation for Sam's mum's seeing:
They prayed to an all-knowing superbeing,
To the omnipresent master of the universe,
And he quite liked the sound of their muttered verse.
So for a bit of a change from his usual stunt
Of being a sexist, racist, murderous cunt
He popped down to Dandenong and just like that
Used his powers to heal the cataracts of Sam's mum
Of Sam's mum
Thank you God for fixing the cataracts of Sam's mum!
I didn't realize that it was such a simple thing
I feel such a dingaling, what ignorant scum!
Now I understand a prayer can work:
A particular prayer in a particular church
In a particular style with a particular stuff
And for particular problems that aren't particularly tough,
And for particular people, preferably white
And for particular senses, preferably sight
A particular prayer in a particular spot
To a particular version of a particular god
And if you get that right, he just might
Take a break from giving babies malaria
And pop down to your local area
And fix the cataracts of your mum!
Thank you so much! I'm not a native speaker, so I didn't understand all the technical terms clearly. Now I know that he sings "ophthalmologist" which is "Augenarzt" in my language :D, so quite different.
Thank you!
May the flying Spaghetti Monster reward you with many spicy meatballs !
Thank you, much appreciated.

2fast2block you’re right, it’s not just insecurity, it’s delusion :-)
One of the best things about this is seeing all those awesome musicians smirking in the background knowing what's coming. This has to be one of their favorites :)
Never mind the genius wordplay, expressing a complicated set of ideas, with layers of sarcasm and phenomenal musicianship. On top of all that this is such a rocking fucking song.
I thank God for curing the cataract of Sam's mum. If not, we would not be able to hear this genius song.
I imagine Sam attended the show that night and was thinking to himself "I've really changed him".
Brilliant man, brilliant comedian, brilliant composer. All hail Tim Minchin, the one true God of Comedy.
+Arianna Deligianni I've got two words to say to that...."shite" and "shite" again.
That is four words...
Katy York Everyone is "brilliant" in the digital era; the global digital audience is the most media-conditioned, dumbed-down, stimulus & response oriented, bunch of compliant and profoundly gullible people.
The immorality agenda is disseminated 24/7 by a corrupted media, with every celebrity artist who advocates the agenda being lavished with star status. It's embarrassing to witness what's going on, and the lack of discerning judgement from unthinking audiences..
+David Henderson You know where the door is then :) byebyes
Arianna Deligianni Nobody with a good discerning mind would pay money to see Minchin; he's just another public broadcaster cultivated celebrity of limited talent, a B-grade, try-hard "under-grad entertainer" promoted as being a "star." He doesn't have a good joke or tune in him. However, that's not of any importance in the digital era, you just have to "toe the line" and you are subsequently rewarded. He is magnificently compliant, I must say.
Tim Minchin is Australia making up for giving the world Ken Ham. 👍
I might regret asking, but who the fuck is that?

Im in love with 8:05 oboe player.
@@chrislive1586 i think that’s a clarinet..? apologies if i’m wrong lol but i play one so i think it’s a clarinet
@@casamity6755 same, they look too similar to me (even googled it).
Im basing it on the "sound", i heard an obvious oboe in the orchestra, but youre right, she might be playing the clarinet.
Thank you, ill never marry her if i dont even know what instrument she plays! (Kidding)(partly)
You can see a bunch of them laughing after the "Fuck me Sam" line, which makes me wonder if they knew that was the lyric.
i so wanna see this guy do a broadway musical.
There is "Matilda, The Musical" currently playing London, Sydney, Broadway and US tour, and "Groundhog Day" opening in London next year and Broadway Jan 2017. Unless you mean starring in one, the closest we have is the arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar as an awesome Judas.
+j9ca501 I don't really see how you could assume that he doesn't mean with Tim minchin in the musical. It feels awfully, and incorrectly pedantic of you, even though it's sarcasm.
FYI he did the lyrics and music to Matilda on Broadway. It's not exactly the Tim Minchin musical but his wit is unmistakable in some of the songs.
A Tim Minchin and Neil Patrick Harris collaboration would be amazing
Saw Matilda the Musical three times. BRILLIANT!
"Love without evidence is... stalking."
😂😂😂
Well... It's true
A friend shared this six years ago this month, and my life changed. Someone who articulated my unspoken views so well. This lead to watching all Tim's videos on RUclips, going to Twitter to find other fans, then becoming friends on Facebook with them, and now have a 5+ year ongoing group chat with three of these people. So thank you, Tim, for adding the friendships of other humans who have similar beliefs!
the sheer magnitude of that song makes it enjoyable on an absurd level.
It's so huge I love it xD
Imagine being a Christian in the orchestra
Well I mean I hope people realize it’s just a song. Hopefully people don’t get too mad hearing this.
@@iainoam2565 a song with a very negative, insulting message for Christians. I wonder if he'd do the same for Jews or Muslims...probably not, they'd wipe him and his family out. I'm not religious and I find this "song" to be horrible, written and performed by a White man of privilege 🙄🙄🤮🤮

Same here. I'm a mediocre Christian, and atheists have way more faith than has ever been possible for me.
@@jhillky Really? That comment? On a Tim Minchin video? Unless I’ve got the wrong end of the stick here (I really hope I have) and I REALLY hope you’re not regurgitating this same religious nonsense of “your faith in science is the same” bollocks. The 1LofT states that energy can't be created or destroyed, it can't happen naturally. One aspect of the 2LofT shows that the universe is winding down, usable energy is becoming less usable. Right at 6:40... that shit-eating grin! I love it! Edit: 5:25 Song Begins.
Thats when you "know," this entire song was a setup.
Not sure why but I love the part where he includes the orchestra in singing 😂😊
His musical creativity is just mindblowing
Yeah, that really stood out for me too. Epic!
Note to self, rebuttals go better with an orchestra.
That's brilliant. The full orchestra was essential.
"fuck me Sam!" Why is this so funny xD
That line makes me laugh too. It may be the timing and the "march/parade" the music briefly goes into. His music seems at home with a full Orchestra
Jason Jackson Yes that's it!
Jason Jackson I just noticed they also launched fireworks for background noise during that line, just to drive the point home.
+katie murphy It's because there's a guy at that moment playing, who's just having a laugh himself.
Can't believe I just found this. Bless your mother, Sam. Without her this masterpiece wouldn't exist!
bless him who?
This might just be the best song ever written.
I love Tim's work, and this one is special. I am atheist but interestingly the song took me on a journey. Back to when I was doing some work in a government hospital, in the paediatric oncology ward. After few hours I had to leave. (I'm not in the medical field). And the visit still exhausts me. In the middle of the song I was back in the ward. And you Christians say there is a God? Clearly he hates lots of children.
Not only Christians. All religious people are hideous monsters who are willing to look any horror as long as they comfort themselves with their inane stories. The essence of evil.
Amazing how you are an atheist and not afraid to admit you are stupid.
@@2fast2block It's absolutely amazing how you fail to see the irony in your own comment.

I asked once why God chose to let my little brother suffer. He is severely disabled. The response I got? "He is here to teach your parents a lesson."
What is that lesson? Why does my little brother have to suffer because someone else needs teaching? The day I was told that is the day I realised Christianity for the lie it is.
(PS Sorry for replying to an old comment.)
I just love the line "Love without evidence is stalking"
