I saw a video recently where someone pointed out Harry Connick Jr. dealing with the crowd clapping on the wrong beat by adding an extra beat to one measure. Put them right back on beat without them even realizing it.
This does only work with an audience above a certain level of integrity. Unfortunately some people don't realise that they: clap off-beat, standing in the way, being a nuisance to others, .... Luckily I think those people who enjoy Tim Minchin are usually above that level :) Tim in general has a quite high standard when it comes to his lyrics, music, topics and jokes. True Art is the soul exploding out. There're no words but you know when you have felt for a moment what their soul was feeling. Try the song "Hi Ren" by the artist Ren.
Tim actually considers himself really lucky and has had a very privileged life. His "pain" is mostly just him mocking grunge music. He is also an actor and he is bringing all his skills into one performance. That's why he has to settle for something trivial like "daddy never came to my ball games" to draw his emotion from. He played sports multiple times a week and his dad is a surgeon. Lol. If you want some context for this performance, watch him perform Rock and Roll Nerd.
There are two Sides of that Stuff. One is a Comedian doing Music. The other are Musicians doing Comedy. You gotta have Talent in both, need to be double gifted, to succeed in attempting that. Many of the secondary Kind do Comedy that also needs the Audience have a profund understanding of Music itself to appreciate what is done - like Jazz does. That rareley happens to People like us.
Bit of back story: This is a comment on Tim's struggle to enter the music industry in the 90s when depressed sounding grunge bands were popular. Tim considers himself super lucky in life so struggles to relate to that kind of music (his song Rock and Roll Nerd is good context for this song 🙂). Tim is also an actor so this is him rolling his skills together. Lol. DADDY NEVER CAME TO MY BALL GAMES 😭😭😭.
Watched this during major depressive episode. Have been struggling with the ideations all day. it's as bad as you'd imagine clinical depression is. But honestly, feeling quite a bit better now. Hope it lasts.
I remember first seeing Tim Minchin on Californication and thinking "Wow, I wish that actor was a real musician" and it took me YEARS to find out he actually is. Such an insanely talented dude. Also love the transcription!

As someone with a personality disorder, this hit on so many levels, up to and including my father never attended my performances. It’s wonderful how he is able to show how hard it is to mask, and when we are shut down for masking, it’s even more difficult. We all just do the best we can. Sometimes that isn’t good enough, but someday it will be good enough for someone and that is all that really matters. ❤
Are we watching the same video? Cuz my Idiot Alert Light is blinking like crazy at some of these comments, which is triggering my latent silly walk and I don't know which emoji to hit. Send in the blondes. There ought to be blondes.🎉😮🎉🎉😊
The notes on the sheet music, I'm dying 😂 "Formulate plan to stop the crowd from clapping" "DESCEND into pit of despair" "You know where this is going oh NO!! he just BLUES ed BEETHOVEN!" "just play as fast as you can"
You are a gem for transcribing this. I am unfortunately one of those poor souls who can't play by ear and needs to see the sheet music. Thank you so much!
reading sheet music is very helpful and difficult, you shouldn't blame yourself because you can only read sheet music... on the other hand, learning to play by ear is an extremely useful skill in my opinion
I need to get back into playing piano, and I can tell you that many (if not most) people can’t just play by ear. To be able to play by ear takes having a musical propensity and then learning to use some kind of instrument (even learning to use one’s vocal chords) to get just a sense of the notes that you might hear.
The fact that you managed to even transcribe this just blows me away. LOL Wow! I never knew that I needed Darkside scored. I'm not sure if my favourite notation is "formulate how to stop audience clapping", "descend into a pit of despair", "you know where this is going" or "big cluster smash and zombie move".
I always count this performance is completely amazing. But the work to transcript it is really insane! It's so sad that I never hear something new from him in last decade :(
dude! He's got whole new albums! He's been in Jesus Christ Superstar, he wrote the music for Mathilda and Ground Hog day musicals. He's very prolific, and busy, and his music and talent keep shining! ruclips.net/user/TimMinchin The Absence Of You is one of the most beautiful songs.
He just released a new song like a few days ago in addition to the stuff the other replies have mentioned. He just took a break from touring and writing this kind of musical comedy show.
You ain't looking very hard!! He's released a studio album, been on tours of the UK and Australia, season 2 of his hit show Upright has just been released, Matilda the musical hits cinemas next week as does his back tour. He also released a new song last week entitled Aeroplane, Tim is literally everywhere at the moment
When RUclips tries to get me to listen to an artist I'm not familiar with, I rarely listen for more than a minute or two. I know what I like and don't like. This video is the first bit of music that's new to me that I've stuck with in a long time. I listened to the whole damn thing and loved every minute of it. Man, that blues piano, boy... I can't believe there's any debate about whether this guy's "good" at piano or not. I'm surprised so many musically inclined people-artists, supposedly-can't tell the difference between skill and classical training. They're not mutually inclusive. He's playing extremely well, entertaining people, and enjoying doing it. I can't imagine what else they want from him. What a legend.
He is also an actor, writer and director. He splits his time between many different things, yet still accomplishes this level musically...and is mostly self taught. He is outspoken on things like religion, science and philosophy. Listen to his beat poem "Storm." His newer music is a little less edgy (intentionally) but always great lyrically and often with elements of irony. He wrote the music to Matilda the Musical. Watch the video to "School Song" where the entire alphabet is incorportated throughout the lyrics.
Oh my God who is this guy! I don’t know how I found him but I could not stop watching. He is phenomenal. I am subscribing. I could listen to him all day every day. Where have you been all my life!?
I wonder how much is improvised and how much he planned and rehearsed, maybe even wrote down. Billy Joel wrote Fantasies & Delusions. Would love to see what Tim Minchin would write to be released to the world as such.
If you listen to the other recordings of this song, it’s mostly improvised. The song by definition is really just chords and lyrics. The rest is pure badassery
His performance is great, but it's even funnier when the notes have things like "formulate plan to stop audience clapping", "sloppy side key", "almost loose crowd with spicy jazz chords", "win crowd back with RAPID blues lick", "smash, feel free to add some wrong notes" and my favourite "oh NO!! he just BLUES'ed BEETHOVEN!"... written into it. 😂 So thank you for the note sheet!

Mad respect! I've been trying to figure this out & transcribe it since I 1st heard it years ago. Could never get it right. I love Tim Minchin. He's such an inspiration to pianists (especially those of us who envied the guitarists when we were kids). George you've got such a good ear I'm seriously jealous. Well done man. So cool.
I don't know how you tab out these performances, but wether it be by ear and hand, or computer, it's incredibly remarkable. As talented as the preformers in your own right. Kudus
I started watching this video having misread the length as 3:15, not 13:15. I'm impressed at the energy that was maintained, I feel exhausted just watching, my arms are not durable enough to play that much for that long.
I was learning english listening to his songs back in 2010's. Now I am learning music, true legend and he in fact created an exeptionaly deep performace as Judas in 2012 JCS.
when you click on the video because you have a diagnosed personality disorder and went in half expecting the term to have just been used as a light descriptor but ended up relating to it in THE most funnest way and reading the comments while the ads were going just made it infinitely better

It's hard to see the separation between his humor and pain. But that seems to be a mark of a lot of really good artists.
True Art is the soul exploding out. There're no words but you know when you have felt for a moment what their soul was feeling.
Try the song "Hi Ren" by the artist Ren.
@@herculesmclovin Damn that's a good phrase
Like Robin Williams
@@herculesmclovin Hello, fellow Ren fan!
I usually hate musical comedy, but Tim is comical music genius and has me laughing at myself for my angsty taste.
Same! I feel ya, but oh man, i fell in love with Prejudice
@@Rabijeel He's actually said that he figures he's a pretty good comedian for a musician, and a pretty good musician for a comediant.
@@eyflfla definitely
Bo Burnham 👌
Bit of back story: This is a comment on Tim's struggle to enter the music industry in the 90s when depressed sounding grunge bands were popular. Tim considers himself super lucky in life so struggles to relate to that kind of music (his song Rock and Roll Nerd is good context for this song 🙂). Tim is also an actor so this is him rolling his skills together. Lol. DADDY NEVER CAME TO MY BALL GAMES 😭😭😭.
Thank you for this. It definitely made the song funnier. 😊
@@mrs.rucker2448 You're welcome 😀. He's one of these artists where the more you find out about him, the more you can appreciate his work. Lol.
Context matters!! Thanks
Watched this during major depressive episode. Have been struggling with the ideations all day. it's as bad as you'd imagine clinical depression is. But honestly, feeling quite a bit better now. Hope it lasts.
Hang in there! 💪
I pray youre doing okay ❤️🔥
Depression suuuuuuuuuucks. Hang in there mate.
Hope you’re having a good day fam
Every time it comes back watch again. You got this.
I remember first seeing Tim Minchin on Californication and thinking "Wow, I wish that actor was a real musician" and it took me YEARS to find out he actually is. Such an insanely talented dude. Also love the transcription!
He is far, far more talented than Atticus Fetch. Lol.
This transcription is a magnum opus in itself. Incredible work!
I love how his Dark Side is Eddie Vedder
With some Michael Stipe and Kurt Cobain thrown in, too.
Facts😅
Elton Vedder
I don't disagree but I think Creed's singer is an even closer match 😂 especially that affected word-chewing thing he does 😅
This is an accurate depiction of what is going through my head in any social situation
He sang this song in dublin recently for the encore(i know i lost my mind) but at 8:46 he then transitioned into white wine in the sun and it was so damn beautiful
Never thought i’d see “Overcome with emotion” on a transcription… brilliant work!
This guy seems like one of those geniuses that doesn’t know it and or who doesn’t care and just does his own thing. I LOVE him. I would kill to see this live.
This song is such a banger. I've heard it a thousand times and I still listen with wide eyed wonder every time. Tim Minchin is the barefoot ghost of Beethoven.
How he keeps a straight face through this performance, is far more impressive than any of the musical talent he possesses..
He breaks character right near the end for a split second when he's standing back up. Lol.
9:50 the vocals are just out of this world. I can't stop laughing. What a musical god.
I wonder if he's referencing someone like the Bono or Chris Martin
Me: oh shit is he actually going to cry?
Him: DADDY NEVER CAME TO MY BALL GAMES!!!
HE'S ONLY SLEEPING!
Is this the whole thing?? You absolute madman.
I took classical music lessons for 8 years, starting at age 7. He blows me away!! I read music and this confused the sh*t out of me!! Technical, awesome and incredible! I bow to your talents...sir.
And yet he is lauded as a hack by classically trained pianists just because Tim himself is not classically trained and doesn't read music
@@jackwhitbread4583 I started lessons because I could play a song I heard one note at a time. So my mom enrolled me. I wish she didn't because I can't jam, only read music to play.
@@Fuphyter can always start :))
He just looks genuinely confused and i love that
lol I actually went through this 3:30. She told me I'm too positive. she needed someone who makes her feel other things more than love. I told her I can have a dark seiid
I was waiting for Fur Elise in that run and I wasn't disappointed. What a mind Tim Minchin has! I won't lie, though, I'm sad you didn't try to transpose the vocals as well for giggles. I realize that these take up a huge amount of time to try to transpose, and I'm grateful for the work that you do.
He knows what the people want. Lol.
wow george, every time i see this song i cant stop listening to it. now i cant take my eyes away from all work you've done with it
a m a z i n g job man, amazing! 2 geniuses in 1 video
this transcription was actually done by someone else (check description) :)
@@leakenny1125 oh no, 3 geniuses!
My Favorite man Tim. He was once "just" a stand up comic, now award winning actor, muscian and composer.
Someone who likes both Tim Minchin and Terry Pratchett is truly someone of surpassing taste.
This must have been such a fun nightmare to transcribe, lol.
I freakin' love Tim Minchin. The man is a genius. As are you for, I can only assume accurately, putting his music to paper. Well done I say xD
Tony Williams be like
Seems pretty accurate.
What a music and entertainment comic genius. Had me in stitches and elation the whole show. Bravo !
i thought i was a mediocre pianist until i saw this video.
now i think i'm terrible, literally no one can compare to this he did an absurdly long solo and kept it *interesting*
Yes I will gladly watch this performance of Dark Side again, never gets old
I love how the intro talking is clearly timed to the song.
You would love "Storm" or "You'll never be as good as Elton John" by him lol
Vamps, man
@@isaacpianos5208 or his 3 minute song, speaking of timings.
@@masheroz (without the metronome) lmao
@Matthew Rowles you need to find the vid of husband 3 minute song versions in a collab, that shit is insane! Basically the versions don't keep pace at all, but he ends them all dead on 3 mins!!
The notes on the sheet music, I'm dying 😂 "Formulate plan to stop the crowd from clapping" "DESCEND into pit of despair" "You know where this is going oh NO!! he just BLUES ed BEETHOVEN!" "just play as fast as you can"
"epic zombie cluster smash"
So this is what happened when his psychiatrist gave him a weekend pass from the institution for the Musically Insane.
You are a gem for transcribing this. I am unfortunately one of those poor souls who can't play by ear and needs to see the sheet music. Thank you so much!
Exactly!!
I spent like two months trying to transcribe his "ten foot c*ck and a few hundred virgins" and still can't understand the fast part lol
I can't read sheet music and need to play by ear 😢
@@fungidoggo9948 I think learning how to read them is going to save a lot more time than learning everything by ear
reading sheet music is very helpful and difficult, you shouldn't blame yourself because you can only read sheet music... on the other hand, learning to play by ear is an extremely useful skill in my opinion
I need to get back into playing piano, and I can tell you that many (if not most) people can’t just play by ear. To be able to play by ear takes having a musical propensity and then learning to use some kind of instrument (even learning to use one’s vocal chords) to get just a sense of the notes that you might hear.
Not only does this guy go hard, so does his phrasing. As a violinist, commendable.
So many personalities!! All of them enormously talented!! Thanks for a great 13.15 minutes ☺️
Absolute respect to you cor choosing the amazing version of the song, it's the only version that my heart will accept.
How incredible it would be to experience this in person
Having had the pleasure many years ago: incredible!
He’s so amazing to see live. He hasn’t done it a lot in recent years since he’s been working on musicals a lot more. (Matilda, for example)
He’s been doing shows again recently. 😄
I totally fan-girled seeing this live. ❤
Always been astounded by Tim Minchin's ability and Talent... but holy shite, seeing what he is doing on a Score... WOW
hm. A cool discovery. A very interesting entertainer, a fine musician. I never heard of him. Thanks for posting
This is the shit l love discovering at 4:23 in the morning. Awesome...❤
The Creed impersonation! 😂 I'd like to see your transcription of the vocals of this as well. 💯❤️✌️
I thought it was an Eddie Vedder impersonation.
@@ceticobr. It is an Eddie Vedder impersonation. He says 'Jeremy spoke in...".

This is the kind of guy to put lyrics to Rhapsody in Blue, and now that I’ve said that, I want it to happen
lmao
I always count this performance is completely amazing. But the work to transcript it is really insane! It's so sad that I never hear something new from him in last decade :(
You must not be looking very hard!
Maybe he's just sleeping? 😂
He also released a new song last week entitled Aeroplane, Tim is literally everywhere at the moment
i think it’s important to note that at 12:14 Tim plays the high note with the big toe of his right foot
I definitely sensed something dark in there, very subtle hidden between notes... fine subconscious resonances covertly touching me...
03:29 Must be an Eddie Vedder impression
09:24 It is an Eddie Vedder impression
the “daddy never came to my ball game” just killed me 😂
I love Tim. He’s seriously talented and intellectual. And funny as hell, but in a very pointy way.
Oh my God who is this guy! I don’t know how I found him but I could not stop watching. He is phenomenal. I am subscribing. I could listen to him all day every day. Where have you been all my life!?
Tim minchin
Tim Minchin is an Australian pianist, comedian, writer, poet, actor, director and god.
This is the best performance of dark side I’ve seen him do. Absolutely amazing finger work
When I saw the thumbnail I knew we were in for some madness but I did not expect you to transcribe ALL of Darkside!
A lot of it is improvised, and Tim can't read or write music.
lol why does this seem more like a stress test for the piano than a performance
His performance is great, but it's even funnier when the notes have things like "formulate plan to stop audience clapping", "sloppy side key", "almost loose crowd with spicy jazz chords", "win crowd back with RAPID blues lick", "smash, feel free to add some wrong notes" and my favourite "oh NO!! he just BLUES'ed BEETHOVEN!"... written into it. 😂 So thank you for the note sheet!
I found and loved this guy when i was younger, and Ive been on an absolute minchin kick for the past month or so, i made a playlist of all my fav songs of his and listen to it as background noise when i work. Reading your annotations on this added another level of joy! Thank you!

My favorite part is the little notes on the sheet music “Develop plan to stop audience clapping”
I was learning english listening to his songs back in 2010's. Now I am learning music, true legend and he in fact created an exeptionaly deep performace as Judas in 2012 JCS.
This is genius to put the scrolling piano transcript with video. As a musician myself, that just makes it so much more fun and hilarious!

I'm going to find a dark corner and sob for 5 minutes in grief at the GBH just inflicted on my language.
The melody from 9:30 to 11:00 is simply breathtaking. I am inspired to learn how to play the piano just to play that.
