LYRICS:
The books you think I wrote are way too thick.
Who needs a thousand metaphors to figure out you shouldn't be a dick?
And I don't watch you when you sleep.
Surprisingly, I don't use my omnipotence to be a fucking creep.
You're not going to heaven.
Why the fuck would you think Id ever kick it with you?
None of you are going to heaven.
There's a trillion aliens cooler than you.
You shouldn't abstain from rape just because you think that I want you to.
You shouldn't rape because rape is a fucked up thing to do.
I don't think masturbation is obscene.
Its absolutely natural and the weirdest fucking thing I've ever seen.
You make my job a living hell.
I sent gays to fix overpopulation and boy did that go well.
You're not going to heaven.
Eat a thousand crackers, sing a million hymns.
None of you are going to heaven.
You're not my children you're a bad games of Sims.
You shouldn't abstain from pork just 'cause you think that I want you to.
You can eat pork, because why the fuck would I give a shit?
You argue and you bicker and you fight.
Atheists and Catholics, Jews and Hindus argue day and night
over what they think is true.
But no one entertains the thought that maybe God does not believe in you.
You pray so badly for heaven,
knowing any day might be the day that you die
but maybe life on earth could be heaven.
Doesn't just the thought of it make it worth the try?
My love is the type of thing that you have to earn
And when you earn it, you won't need it. (2x)
I'm not going to give you love just 'cause I know that you want me to.
If you want love then the love is gonna come from you. Приколы

Yeah I always found it weird when some Christians wondered how atheists could live without a purpose because we don’t believe in God, like if your only purpose is to serve God, and nothing you do is not in his name, then aren’t you just a servant, a peasant, a serf? Working over the lands of the earth to plant the seeds of God’s meaningfulness? (Guess that’s why they call him Lord God) Sure, that’s noble, but you’re not ever living for yourself? Is that not depressing? Have you ever felt self-love, self-worth? The impostor syndrome in even the dumbest Christians must be so high, and that’s just a darn shame. Also, when they ask “what’s stopping you from murdering or raping because you’re an atheist?” What’s stopping me? The law and my basic understanding of empathy, perhaps!
Also just as important would be "Life on earth could be heaven, isn't just the thought of it worth a try?" :)
“You’re not my children, You’re a bad game of SIMS” and “Maybe God doesn’t believe in you” are great fucking lines and I’m jealous I didn’t think of them

@@krakitty123 Don't get mad, because I'm not sure how you're reading the reply, but I'm pretty sure they just mean that people in a bad situation might see people with let's say a house or food as Gods because they have essentials that the unfortunate person doesn't.
Like how people want to come into America because their country is in a situation, whether that be bad governement or lack of essentials. They see America as a paradise of freedom. (Is what I was told. It could just be Americans being self-centered because we do that a lot)

'No-one entertains the thought that maybe God does not believe in you'
This line means more than it's face value.
'If you want love then the love has gotta come from you'
Extremely profound for a comedy song.
El Diablo That part was really really Really GOOD!!
The entire second half means more than it's face value.
MiningSolo Okay.
El Diablo I love Bo, both his comedy and insight on life are ingenious. In my opinion, it's songs like this that are what entertainment should be. Many claps for bo.
"Maybe life on earth could be heaven. Doesn't just the thought of it make it worth a try". I'm an environmental scientist who has spent most of my life feeling this but haven't been able to put it to words. Hearing it in this song hits me hard. If everyone else felt the same way, we'd be living in a very different world. You can call it paradise, heaven, whatever. Doesn't just the thought of that make the effort worthwhile?
no, we are living in heaven. the world is perfect. we are advancing and the environment is getting worse and we are enslaving/killing more animals than ever. it's awesome for humanity
CAN OTHER PEOPLE TRY TO AT LEAST LISTEN TO PEOPLE LIKE YOU.
I wish more people thought like that instead of thinking the sooner the world falls apart the sooner they, specifically, will be raptured away to leave the rest of us to deal with the problems they actively fought us not to fix.
Utopia
This made me think of the idea that: If you need the fear of eternal damnation to be a good person then maybe you're not a good person.
Damn thats deep
EXACTLY!! As he said “who needs a thousand metaphors to figure out you shouldn’t be a di-?” It’s really sad to see that some people only are good people because they fear hell. Not because they genuinely want to be good.
Some religious person asked me if I don't belong in damnation, why don't I do whatever I want and I was just like "...cause it's wrong?" It's crazy
"What is more noble? To be born a good person, or to overcome your past nature and grow into a good person through hard work and diligence"
Yup
"But maybe life on earth could be heaven, doesn't just the thought of it make it worth a try?"
Oddly reassuring.
True
Incredible line
Also, "If you want love than the love has got to come from you"
Dude. Check out Jordan Peterson on every decision that you make tipping the world around you more towards heaven or hell every day. This third verse encapsulates thay truth in a comedic song.

I love this song. I’ve grown up Christian all my life and still believe in it, but I was also raised by good people. It’s disturbing and infuriating to me how weird, hateful, and stiff so many other Christians are. I absolutely admire this brutal, honest take on the assholes who think they’ll go to Heaven just because they believe.

I love that as a comedian, he's confident enough to not have laughs towards the end of his songs, but silence from the audience in awe
It's probably because a lot of his songs and bits end in messages instead of just puchlines
The last part of the song was pretty serious and I can understand why. It was designed that way. Bo just wanted to express his religous opinion and wanted to be serious about it.
Because there not just joke songs. There legitimate good music. Better than most musicians.
@@brendankane4186 æ Nm
Honestly, I'd be cautious to judge that kind of thing from a video, microphones and the way you can mix channels that contain them afterwards can really change how something sounds or comes over. It's easy to make an audience be practically silent while they might be laughing or cheering just by mixing down that microphone in the post processing stage...
Other than that: the last part is not exactly ehm, the most comedy-part of the whole song and the message it tries to convey...
"If you want love then the love has gotta come from you." I needed this line in many contexts of my life, not just my spirituality. Thank you Bo. Thank you.
As a ex-muslim the pork part was my favorite. Even when i was a child i was thinking " doesn't god have anything better than writing list for consumable animals?"
الله يهديك
I always thought this was due to the fact that hogs/pigs carried disease and the food safety back then obviously wasn't the best. It wss therefore labeled unlcear.
@@6tuf85dyfu Might be, but there's nothing divine about that interpretation. 600 years before Islam Jesus already said: "A man is not defiled by what enters his mouth, but by what comes out of it.", and I don't think food safety was any better in those times. If anything it was even worse. Today we have food safety and we can eat whatever we want, which makes Jesus words true and timeless, Jewish law obsolete, and Islam just a bad copy of old texts.
I had the same discussion with my friend a year or so ago
He used to live with his grandparents in Saudi Arabia and never ate pork but he is a Norse pagan and one day I just looked at him and went "Why don't you eat pork? You like breakfast sausage but not other pork stuff." His response was religion, to which I came back with "Ok... But you're Norse pagan right? Do you realize how many pigs the Vikings probably ate?"
The look on his face when that clicked 😂 needless to say he eats pork now without feeling bad

I've heard Bo praised for his songs being witty and funny and linguistically creative.
One thing people never seem to mention is just how f*cking *beautiful* so many of his songs are from a purely musical, aesthetic perspective.
i was just about to comment that! i have to say the piano alone is insane and compliments what he’s saying so well!
that's what i've been saying...the piano solo in "straight white males" is absolutely incredible
That’s actually my favorite part of comedians who use music for comedy; the most beautifully composed song being sung with this lovely voice and it can be about the raunchiest thing you’ve ever heard! Especially when it’s just good all around; Bo Burnham, Tim Minchin, Stephen Lynch, somehow they all find this wonderful dichotomy between what should be ugly versus beautiful and make it into the same thing.
AND..with a lot of depth and truth.
I misread it as "from a purely musical, atheistic perspective" at first and did a double take.
I'm a very devoted Catholic and at first I thought I was going to hate this song. Literally my second favorite Bo song (only beaten out by Sad because that always has me ROLLING)

“My love is the type of thing that you have to earn. I’m not gonna give you love just cause I know that you want me to. If you want love the love has got to come from you.” Kind of like how respect is earned not just automatically given and I wish people would see that meaning more. Just because you’re old or just because of your religion or anything it doesn’t mean that you automatically deserve respect it depends on the type of person that you are. You have to give in order to receive.
I have to disagree with the respect is earned thing, disrespect is earned. Respect is usually given to anyone, like if you meet a stranger at the grocery store and they ask you to reach for an item in a shelf they can't get you usually give it to them but once you realize they're shitty as hell theres a less likely chance of you doing the samething for them again.

"My loves the kind of thing you have to earn and when you earn it you won't need it."
Lyrics!!!
There's things I don't, want to be misconstrued in my act that I feel often are
I don't want you leaving my show thinking, that I think I know better than people
Or that I, that I think I'm better than people in general, um
Okay, I just wanted to put that out there
Uh, this is a song from the perspective of God
The books you think I wrote are way too thick
Who needs a thousand metaphors to figure out you shouldn't be a dick?
And I don't watch you when you sleep
Surprisingly, I don't use my omnipotence to be a fucking creep
You're not going to Heaven
Why the fuck would you think I'd ever kick it with you?
None of you are going to Heaven
There's a trillion aliens cooler than you
You shouldn't abstain from rape just 'cause you think that I want you to
You shouldn't rape 'cause rape is a fucked up thing to do
Pretty obvious, just don't fuckin' rape people, please
Didn't think I had to write that one down for ya'
I don't think masturbation is obscene
It's absolutely natural and the weirdest fucking thing I've ever seen
You make my job a living hell
I sent gays to fix overpopulation, and boy did that go well
You're not going to Heaven
Eat a thousand crackers, sing a million hymns
None of you are going to Heaven
You're not my children, you're a bad game of Sims
You shouldn't abstain from pork just 'cause you think that I want you to
You can eat pork, 'cause why the fuck would I give a shit?
I created the universe, do you think I'm drawing the line at the fuckin' deli Isle?
You argue and you bicker and you fight
Atheists and Catholics, Jews and Hindus argue day and night
Over what they think is true
But no one entertains the thought that maybe God does not believe in you
You pray so badly for Heaven
Knowing any day might be the day that you die
But maybe life on Earth could be heaven
Doesn't just the thought of it make it worth the try?
My love's the type of thing, that you have to earn
And when you earn it, you won't need it
My love's the type of thing, that you have to earn
When you earn it, you won't need it
I'm not gonna' you love just 'cause I know that you want me to
If you want love then the love is gonna' come from you
Thank you very much
No living human has ever spoken more truer things through a song of 4 mins
Bob Dylan
"No one entertains the thought that maybe God does not believe in you" is one of the most profound statements I've ever heard
It really is. I absolutely agree.
Fight Club has a similar line. Something like "if God exists, in all likelihood he doesn't care about you. In all likelihood, he hates you."
When shit gets real
Alacard0malley I totally agree
a 19 year old comedian wrote the most profound thing you've ever heard?
Now this is a god which I am willing to believe in. Not some guy who's always watching over your shoulder and keeping tabs on everything that you do, but someone who made us and just watches passively. Also, "no one entertains the thought maybe God does not believe in you" and "maybe life on Earth could be Heaven" are two of the best quotes from ANYTHING I've ever read, heard or seen.
Your comment made me think "Wow. God and Santa Claus have so much in common."
@@briannasimpson6891 they already do for me.
this is a god im willing to belive in too
If you seriously believe that God created the universe and watches passively but does not intervene in the life of you are others, that is an actual belief. It’s called deism. Deism is more of a philosophy than a religion, though.
@@duffymarie3322 deism is the most logical shit ever
Just rediscovered this song and i just want to say that Bo is one of my absolute favorite artists and a fucking genius. This song is hilarious but also so thought-provoking and moving and a way that I've never seen anyone else pull off. Phenomenal.
"My love's the type of thing that you've got to earn, and when you earn it, you don't need it" I feel is a very overlooked yet important line
Damn, it got really deep at the end there......I love it.
ikr!
#deep
#deep is another one of his songs
lol
where you like what
I like how he doesn't repeat stuff too often in his songs, except that one love song.
I loved this comment XD
lol
DaMaG SATAN YOU TASTE SO GOOD REPEAT STUFF REPEAT STUFF REPEAT STUFF
Lovely Horrors GUUuuUUUUUuuuuUUuUDdd*
DaMaG two. Oh Bo! and Repeat stuff
i love coming back after an while and hearing this mans songs again, it's awesome
I was being forced to sing in church so I sang this 🥹👍
Legend. Don’t let those religionists control you
Cool story bro
if this is true, what happened next?
69th like
hehe
(I have the same sense of humor as a 12yr old boy)
Well if you sang this then you weren’t forced to sing then, otherwise you would have sang the actual church music. I may not be religious but I still pray you get out of this edgy reddit atheist phase soon
‘Maybe life on earth could be heaven’
That hit me way harder than it should have
that hit me harder than my teachers did in grade school
We do say, on earth as it is in heaven, sometimes. I think.
That line converted me
This place would be if everyone wasn't a dick
Bo just has such a way with his articulation and the delivery of his lyrics. Whether it's a song like this that runs chills through me or one of his purely fun songs; his lyric writing always gets the best of me when he's getting a message across. This song so beautifully and cleverly makes you understand what he's trying to say. Which is why I think he's the best entertainer :)
Well said and much agreed!
he is a great song writer for sure! the effort that goes into a song like words words words is rediculous
Well that is what happens when you're honest with your art!
and then there's just "A World on Fire"
TØP trash
The best song xD
"But no one entertains the thought that maybe God does not believe in you"
Gave me shivers.
10 years later, the message still hits hard
This is so good it doesn't even need commenting on.
"You can eat pork because why the fuck would I give a shit?" Hysterics every time I heard that line!!
Read this as he said and lost my shit
Then why the fuck are you commenting? 😂😂
Can you explain this joke please?
its in their religion that jews arent allowed to eat pork
I was raised primitive Seventh Day Adventist, they too taught me pork was a sin. When I was 10 or 11 I ask my dad, "why would we worship a God that would send a hungry kid to hell for eating a ham sandwich" I think that is when my faith cracked and fell apart latter in life.
I love how he went from funny to the most important message of life. just wow.
No one else should like your comment, because right now it says 42
fak they did
No one touch my first comment
ConnorJohn
So tempted to be that dick who has to give it one more thum up
It...
It is beautiful...
This is fun listening to while playing sims especially at 2:16 ish
"No one entertains the thought that maybe God doesn't believe in you."
"There's a trillions aliens cooler than you."
Bo wants to give me an existential crisis and its working
"No one entertains the thought that maybe God does not believe in you."
"Maybe life on Earth could be Heaven."
"If you want love then the love's gotta come from you."
Some of the most powerful lines I've ever heard.
Fr i love his standup because they're funny yet lowkey #deep
According to the comments, there was another line that was removed about how the real collection point to donate to God is that homeless guy’s plate
He 'hides' important messages in his songs
‘’I Don’t watch You when You sleep’’ Bo Burnham
That and "My love is something you need to earn, and when you earn it, you won't need it"
"You pray so badly for heaven, knowing any day might be the day you die.
But maybe life on Earth could be heaven, doesn't just the thought of it make it worth a try?"
Genuinely the most powerful lyrics in a song I've heard in a while.
Ya becouse if this is heaven then I'm scared what kind of place is hell?
John Playz
This is hell, we need to make it heaven.
@@requiemlul3140
That's not gonna happen unless everyone gets wish granting powers.
Grape Panta Subliminals
It can, if people just chose to be nice to each other. The little things like a thank you already make the world a better place.
@@requiemlul3140
No. That's just making the world a better place. Heaven is perfect. Everyone can grant their wishes. Etc.
I love how this song is highlighting the hypocrisy in religions. You shouldn’t not do bad things because a deity told you to, you should not do it because its morally wrong. You shouldn’t do good because it may be beneficial to you later, do it because its the right thing to do. Do things for you, not an idea
"No one entertains the thought that God might not believe in you" Damn bro alright
I can just imagine God sitting up on a holy cloud watching this show and just absolutely laughing his ass off
i think the face-palming, pinching his nose image suits better
Oh, You must be talking about *George Carlin
His?
“That kid is actually right. I'm not taking those idiots up here. They're xenophobic!”
Great comment dude
Plot twist: Bo actually is god and has just been fucking with us this whole time
Allison Hardin I fucking swear this is true
I'm religious now. I would be the most pious person to have ever lived if Bo was actually God.
That would be funny!
This feels real dude
Of all the people.
"Bo is the man. I cant wait for this special." - Philip DeFranco, 2014
"Bo is the man. I cant wait for this special." -Everyone, 2021
Moral of this song for the people getting stupidly offended: being religious doesn’t make you a good person
"you're not my children, you're a bad game of Sims"
#dead LOOOOOLL
well he isnt wrong
zayhvhn bicknell I love that part Xd
zayhvhn bicknell lol

“If you want love, then the love has got to come from you.”
That hit me, made me think Bo - thanks

Same!

I’m glad you found it mate
This song, especially the last lines, makes me want to apologize to everyone of the mistakes I did intentionally or unintentionally to them. I think this would bring me peace. But for right now i still dont know where to start....
" I don't watch you when you sleep"
"Woo" some audiance member
One of the funniest songs I've heard. Somehow it's also the deepest, saddest, most educational and fucking beatiful too.
How does Bo do it?
Bo is a master and comedic genius. Truly one of the greats
Aww shit I want to like this but if I did it would become 666
Birdsie 666 likes
Birdsie i was 1000 hell yeah
The most powerful line (well stanza) imo has got to be
"You pray so badly for heaven
Knowing any day might be the day that you die
But maybe life on earth could be heaven
Doesn't just the thought of it make it worth a try?"
like yes why not we try to be happy here instead of making other people's lives torture just because they may not follow similar beliefs?
This is the most closest one to my heart. I've been religious all my life (born catholic) and i grew up going to sunday schools all my childhood. And although i love the people there and i appreciate the precious memories, i sadly have not brought praying when i grew up. I always wondered in the back of my mind whenever the teachers would tell us to accept jesus so we can save ourselves from hell and go to heaven, if im really doing that and how do i know if ive done that already. I was so scared of the idea of going to hell so I prayed and prayed and TRIED to accept jesus in my heart (whatever the heck that even meant). But then i wandered off, discovered atheism, being agnostic, and different beliefs through the internet. I do feel much better now than before i guess. I stopped letting hell chain me. I can be a good person without having to worry about going to hell and only doing "right things" for the sake of going to heaven. I don't even anticipate heaven anymore anyways. Seems pretty boring now lol, ill just enjoy earth while im still here.
Thats always been my belief; we can choose to make this place Heaven, or we choose to make this place Hell. Unfortunately it feels like Hell's winning most days.
Humans have this obnoxious superiority complex. If someone doesn’t believe the same thing you do then there’s basically saying you’re wrong and that bothers them
Bravo🙌
According to Christian Theology, Heaven is a place with no pain, no death and no sorrow. So how exactly can we humans make this life like Heaven?
This is really insightful. There is not much separating this from comedy and an incredibly powerful song. Especially that last full verse.
Religious people, if this song aggravates you a lot then the song is about you.
