I'm obsessed with Bo's talent. When any of my friends are having a bad day I send them a link to this song. It's a prescription for joy. Thank God for Bo and his contributions that allow us a reprieve from our hectic lives.
With specific friends of mine (only those of us who we know are absolutely completely okay with it, and we know that for a fact), when one of us is having a bad day, we'll send Kill Yourself (by Bo Burnham, for anyone who doesn't know that song). It's perfect and it works immediately haha but of course, we're very careful with who we send it to, any time but ESPECIALLY when they're having a bad day. It's not everyone's sense of humor, and we make sure to respect that. But for those of us who like that kind of humor, it works like a charm!
I wasn't sure what to think of this song when I first heard it, but the "...and also NO to the things you asked for" line solidified that it was a fantastic song. Bo really has the ability to demonstrate a point in a funny way.
I don't know what it is about this clip but the lighting, mixed with Bo's phenomenal acting makes him look like he is legitimately on the brink of tears (his eyes are very twinkly), which makes this song even better 😂 especially 2:10-2:15
I think the most impactful part for me is when he sings "and also 'no' to the things you asked for"--because it shows he recognizes the social power imbalance. When people say to a marginalized person that they're taking "offense" to something--they don't get that it's not about "offense"--it's literally about being disempowered and having to come and beg another demographic to try and gain access to what that demographic assumes they have a right to simply by being born how they are. If I have a right in a society, there really is no reason that any other citizen should have to come and appeal to me for that same right. If I'm born with it, so should they be.
(Lyrics) Guys I got a lot of problems in my life I wrote a song about some of the problems in my life Hope that some of you can relate to it Here we go Walking around I got no one to talk to There's everyone And then there's just me If I could change Don't you think that I'd do it God only knows Why he cursed me to be A straight white male I state my problems Other people roll their eyes Three trips to the mall Zero khakis in my size I've never been the victim Of a random search for drugs But you can't say My life is easy Until you've walked a mile in my Uggs Straight white male I know the road looks tough ahead The women want rights The gays want kids (what?) Can't you just leave us alone? And also "No" to the things you asked for (They're being greedy And they know it, okay?) Everyone thinks that I've got it easy Just 'cause it's true Doesn't mean that it's right So pull up a chair And put down your pitchforks Give me a chance To show you what it is like To be a straight white male The churches never made me Feel ashamed of who I am But I get emails from Zappos That Gmail doesn't mark as spam My country's constitution Was hand-written by my race But my wife bought me The brand new iPhone With an iPod Touch's case (Case doesn't fit that phone) Straight white male I know the road looks tough ahead The women want rights The blacks want Not to be called "the blacks" (Sorry) Can't you just leave us alone? And also "No" to the things you asked for No Straight white male Know the road looks tough ahead The women want rights The African Ameri- It doesn't work with the rhythm We used to have all the money and land And we still do But it's not as fun now (Thank you)
Thank you! I want to show my dad this song, but with his hearing he always needs the lyrics because he can't understand what's being said over the music. But the phone I have now doesn't let me do split screen. I've tried pulling up lyric videos, but he's also legally blind and the videos usually either have a color scheme that he can't see/read, or it's too small, or too much on the screen at one time, or sometimes it goes too quickly. Or sometimes it's all of the above. So, thank you so much for taking the time to post the lyrics. Even if it was just copy and pasted, it's still very helpful!
I'm a seasoned musician of several years now, and I haven't been wowed by a piece of pop-structure music like that in a while, also by some of his other songs I've heard on this youtube rabbit hole I'm on right now. I would unironically listen to a whole album of serious music of his if he put one out. These are amazingly composed and written songs. And all the while, it's to deliver first rate comedy. What a guy.
"Can't you just leave us alone? And also no to the things you asked for..." I've been trying to put into words the reaction men have to being asked for basic human decency for years, and I couldn't explain in paragraphs exactly what they were doing and why it was so frustrating to me. Bo burnham did it in two sentences...
Make them a close friend on IG, and share it to your story. That ought to do the trick, surely! 😂 If nothing else, it'll atleast make them feel special for "being added as a close friend"
Did bo have to remove his videos and netflix reupload them because of a contract or something?? Because straight white male and other songs from bo on his channel just randomly disappeared around the start of the year. what happened?
Not from his own channel. Those uploads were just from random channels and blew up. All of the songs Bo uploaded himself are still up on his own channel.
I think part of the point is to imagine how much his existing problems would be exacerbated if he wasn't a straight white guy. I'm a straight white guy, and to me life is a constant struggle, but I always have it in my head that it could be much more a struggle if I didn't roll a fucking 6 when I was born.
@WolvesTeeth Hi, I accuse others of having an agenda, as I spout my agenda! why don’t you tell us all about the post-WW2 era GI Bill and GI homeowners program then? Maybe you can include what % of black soldiers were afforded the same “handouts” as white soldiers? Then, when people found out, instead of committing to guaranteeing the same benefits to everyone who served, they started making huge cuts to the program. Probably some good reading for you, since you feel so oppressed.
It’s not Netflix that won’t allow it, it’s Bo. He was saying that he wouldn’t release an album for this show, because it doesn’t really work without the lighting and effects.
I feel like some people in the comments are missing the point of the song? Like saying that nowadays he would get cancelled when he's making fun of straight white men who think they're oppressed

As a bi white woman who, like bo, sturggles with her mental health, I find this song so genius. You know that your privileged and your life is for the most part amazing and full of opportunities and sometimes you whine about small things and feel bad. ( Rightfully so) But when it comes to your mental health and your not okay you feel ashamed and guilty for feeling as if your life was difficult and full of challanges because you know that you have such a good start in life. To be able to put that complicated mess in a sarcastic song is really quite the work of art.
As a straight, white man myself, I know white privilege exists, but I prefer to say we straight, white men have lives that are "easier", not "easy". If you live long enough, no one's life is consistently easy. (And if you don't live long enough, well, not ideal either.) My life isn't always easy, there are just additional difficulties and unfairnesses that I am spared but that less privileged groups have to deal with.

“I believe you can joke about anything. It all depends on how you construct the joke. What the exaggeration is, what the exaggeration is. Because every joke needs one exaggeration; every joke needs one thing to be way out of proportion.”
If you haven’t realized this, pay attention from here on out and see if he’s wrong. And it would probably do you well to read more opinions and listen to arguments against your position, or just admit you’re ignorant and would rather stay in your bubble. Maybe someday you’ll be able to swim in deeper waters.

The delivery of the final 'straight white.....maaaen' always gets me for some reason... the facial expression is just brilliant
3:28 unironically one of the coolest piano solos I’ve ever heard
One of the NASTIEST solos ever, been trying to find something like it for hours
this song is funny but his piano playing is so good especially the part at 3:28
I'm obsessed with Bo's talent.
3:29 is just pure music to my ears i love it so much
You can see on his face how much he was loving that solo
HIs comedy is absolute gold, BUt can we take a moment and talk about his fuckin brilliant musicianship, that piano during the bridge fuckin slaps.
If I'm born with it, so should they be.
this guy gets it
THIS! You nailed it dude (or girl? idk.)
don't care. white men aren't privileged.
That piano solo is ✨perfection✨
Literally gave me chills
4:17 that one guy who jumped the gun made it so much better, whoever you are - thank you!

Guys
I got a lot of problems in my life
I wrote a song about some of the problems in my life
Hope that some of you can relate to it
Here we go
Walking around
I got no one to talk to
There's everyone
And then there's just me
If I could change
Don't you think that I'd do it
God only knows
Why he cursed me to be
A straight white male
I state my problems
Other people roll their eyes
Three trips to the mall
Zero khakis in my size
I've never been the victim
Of a random search for drugs
But you can't say
My life is easy
Until you've walked a mile in my Uggs
Straight white male
I know the road looks tough ahead
The women want rights
The gays want kids (what?)
Can't you just leave us alone?
And also
"No" to the things you asked for
(They're being greedy
And they know it, okay?)
Everyone thinks that I've got it easy
Just 'cause it's true
Doesn't mean that it's right
So pull up a chair
And put down your pitchforks
Give me a chance
To show you what it is like
To be a straight white male
The churches never made me
Feel ashamed of who I am
But I get emails from Zappos
That Gmail doesn't mark as spam
My country's constitution
Was hand-written by my race
But my wife bought me
The brand new iPhone
With an iPod Touch's case
(Case doesn't fit that phone)
Straight white male
I know the road looks tough ahead
The women want rights
The blacks want
Not to be called "the blacks" (Sorry)
Can't you just leave us alone?
And also
"No" to the things you asked for
No
Straight white male
Know the road looks tough ahead
The women want rights
The African Ameri-
It doesn't work with the rhythm

Thx
I think now's an appropriate time to bring this song back...
Hey friend. I'm here too. When satire becomes a little too real, I feel like I'm going to laugh from the irony until I cry
@abbieclark4766 that's the beauty of dark comedy. coping with reality through laughter 🧡. we'll get through this
This is absolutely hilarious but the melody is BEAUTIFUL-
That breakdown at 3:24 it's out of this planet. his piano skills make me wet and Im a straight white male too... I love his piano skills too much
I find it amazing how this comedy song has such a genuinely ominous and fantastic piano solo near the end.
What a guy.
I want a John mulaney and bo Burnham talk show where they just sit around and chat
the only reason I haven’t offed myself is because of the possibility that this might one day come true tbh
I'm obsessed with his songs rn, especially this one, I listen to it every day
Oh hes not back, your just releasing clips from old shows. got it. Shame.
Still gave me a great laugh 🤣
This is exactly the type of white “problem” Bo was singing about.

I love his comedic songs, and I feel like with that piano playing and his talent he could write some killer love songs
why is nobody talking about how ungodly this piano solo at 3:27 is. THAT IS SO FUCKING GOOD UGHAAHH
i’m so insanely happy that all these Bo videos are popping up in my recommended again🥺♥️i adore him so much
Awww...and I screeched at the idea he had released new content. Still waiting patiently, but it was a moment of excitement. Oh well. GO BO!!!
The instumental 2:00 is beautiful
The world does not deserve this man. Just f*cking brilliant.
"Can't you just leave us alone? And also no to the things you asked for..." I've been trying to put into words the reaction men have to being asked for basic human decency for years, and I couldn't explain in paragraphs exactly what they were doing and why it was so frustrating to me. Bo burnham did it in two sentences...
o god how do i send this to someone without sendingthsi to them
wat
😂
Make them a close friend on IG, and share it to your story. That ought to do the trick, surely! 😂 If nothing else, it'll atleast make them feel special for "being added as a close friend"
Do you know magic?
i'll do it for u
"We used to own all the land, But it’s not as fun now" is my favorite line 🤣
the fact that this isn’t on spotify yet. makes my heart ache.
@@TotallySauceome oh I could've sworn it was his, fair enough then
Its kinda sad listening to him talk about how easy his life is in retrospect knowing about all of the mental health shit he was going through.
I don't think he would mean to downplay his mental health issues. He's just keenly aware his problems aren't because he's a straight white male
I think part of the point is to imagine how much his existing problems would be exacerbated if he wasn't a straight white guy. I'm a straight white guy, and to me life is a constant struggle, but I always have it in my head that it could be much more a struggle if I didn't roll a fucking 6 when I was born.
Thats the thing about privilege. It doesn’t mean you have no problems, it just means that you suffer zero of the problems of being non-white.
@WolvesTeeth are you intentionally dumb? He never talked about WW2, which incidentally ended 70ish years ago, not a century.
This song NEVER fails to make me laugh. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched it
The piano solo really gives off a phantom of the opera vibes and i love it
Dude. I can't stop loving this guy. Every show and movie of his makes me laugh and cry wich must be one of the highest points in art if you ask me.
i think musically this might be his best song. the melody is so beautiful.
I feel like JD Vance sings this to himself daily without realizing its satire
Sounds more like something Harris listens to believing it’s a documentary on why she lost.
I live for the day that Netflix allows this song on Spotify
It’s not Netflix that won’t allow it, it’s Bo. He was saying that he wouldn’t release an album for this show, because it doesn’t really work without the lighting and effects.
3:26 The fcking "🎶No🎶" caption with the zoom out and distant voice is so perfect
I've been thinking about this song all throughout my classes. Who needs test review when Bo Burnham exists?
I feel like no one talks about how good bo is at piano, dudes a great musician
This is my favourite Bo Burnham song to listen to. The instrumental is so damn good.

( Rightfully so)
But when it comes to your mental health and your not okay you feel ashamed and guilty for feeling as if your life was difficult and full of challanges because you know that you have such a good start in life. To be able to put that complicated mess in a sarcastic song is really quite the work of art.
Great point! That is exactly why I adore this song-Bo nails it EVERY time (and I'm a bi white woman too)
As a straight, white man myself, I know white privilege exists, but I prefer to say we straight, white men have lives that are "easier", not "easy". If you live long enough, no one's life is consistently easy. (And if you don't live long enough, well, not ideal either.) My life isn't always easy, there are just additional difficulties and unfairnesses that I am spared but that less privileged groups have to deal with.
@@lethargogpeterson4083
Yeah. That's a good logic too. I get you point. As long as the weight those aditional struggles can have on your life should not be underestimated.
