Anderson was very raw and angry too, in a more visceral way. He was in his own league in my opinion, vocally and acting wise, kind of untouchable. This performance is very stiff to me, his voice doesn't seem fully suited to this style of singing and he doesn't really emote much. But hey, y'all seem to be loving it so maybe I'm crazy.

I love Tim as Judas, he’s so easy to empathise with. I remember he said in an interview that Judas gets a bad rep because if God exists then he was manipulated and never had a chance to do anything else, and if God doesn’t exist then he was right and Jesus had gone mad and was going too far and would bring reprisals against the Jewish community

I heard a theory that Judas is actually the most faithful among the disciples. Reason being, despite clearly being a follower of Jesus, his task was something that would be nigh impossible for any of the other disciples, who were willing to even harm others to protect Jesus despite his teachings. Hence, why he ended up hanging himself.
But, then again, it's a theory, and it doesn't really change anything but our PoV...

"You've begun to matter more than the things you say" is such a hard hitting line when you consider the type of Christians who's moral and political beliefs seem to be completely removed from his messages about helping those less fortunate, not making judgements et cetera. Some use worship of Jesus as a justification for them to legitimise their own bigotry and keeping wealth and power at the top which is completely antithetical to what he is supposed to have said. If he was indeed real and is in the afterlife he must be cringing at what has been done and said by some supposedly in his name.

    • @PastyMancer

So they essentially used pitch correction, not because Tim was off-key, but because they wanted to change the notes Tim sung. Like in the death scene, he pours his guts out. However, after they were like, let's make it a pop song!
Maybe other people needed bits of it, here and there, but not Tim. E.G. F Sharp's (one of his own songs) punchline wouldn't land without being able to hit the note.

@@waxy8402 The keffiyeh, particularly in that pattern, are a traditional Palestinian scarf. People wear them now to remember that Palestine is oppressed and her people are suffering under occupation and genocide, and have been for decades.
It's important context to remember that during Jesus's time, the region of Galilee (itself the northernmost part of ancient Palestine) was under occupation by Rome, its people were being exploited by the occupiers, and Jesus became a symbol of civil resistance against that occupation.
In fact, much of the advice Jesus gave was, in context, about passive and civil resistance than we realise. "Turn the other cheek" was in reference to the fact that Roman soldiers (who tend to be right-handed) will punch an equal in the face, connecting with the left cheek, but will backhand slap someone they consider lesser, connecting with the right cheek. When Jesus says to "turn the other cheek", it is to dare the Roman solider to treat him like an equal, not a second-class citizen. Why? To activate the Jewish citizens of Galilee to demand respect and dignity, and activate the Roman soldiers to remember their conscience, and that the Galileans are people. As I said, many of the instructions are about this, including "going the extra mile" and giving someone the shirt off your back. He didn't want his people to be meek, but to fight back.
This is why Judas in this song, as the antagonist, is fearfully asking Jesus to sit down, don't let them be too loud, to not resist -- he fears the Roman violence more than he dares to dream of a free Galilee.
As this musical has always been about putting the story through a modern lens with the historical context of people resisting occupation, Judas is wearing the keffiyeh to symbolise his resistance, but at the same time is almost strangled by the weight of it.

His voice and technique are dramatically improved here compared to his earlier work (and I absolutely love his earlier work). From some of the other comments, it sounds like they toned down the autotune in this clip, but it's still pretty heavy in places. I don't have an ear for sound editing and I can hear it. I'm sure there's a fair amount of sound editing and subtle autotuning in everything I listen to that I'm not even aware of, but this rises to a level that just makes me sad for Tim.

Judas says first “they think they’ve found a new messiah… and they’ll hurt you when they FIND they’re wrong” but then he says later “and they’ll hurt you if they THINK you’ve lied…” I love this as it shows that he believes Jesus’s message and beliefs but doesn’t think he’s divine, or if he does he doesn’t think it important
To him Jesus speaks the truth but he thinks the truth is being bent because of his ego and his message is being forgotten and replaced with just the man and person… and to Judas it’s gone too far

    My mind is clearer now
    At last all too well
I can see where we all soon will be
    If you strip away
    The myth from the man
You will see where we all soon will be
    Jesus!
You started to believe the things they say of you
You really do believe this talk of God is true
And all the good you've done will soon get swept away
You've begun to matter more than the things you say
Listen Jesus I don't like what I see
All I ask is that you listen to me
And remember, I've been your right hand man all along
You have set them all on fire
They think they've found the new Messiah
And they'll hurt you when they find they're wrong
I remember when this whole thing began
No talk of God then we called you a man
And believe me, my admiration for you hasn't died
But every word you say today
Gets twisted round some other way
And they'll hurt you if they think you lied
    Nazareth your famous son
Should have stayed a great unknown
    Like his father, carving wood
    He'd have made good
    Tables, chairs and oaken chests
    Would have suited Jesus best
    He'd have caused nobody harm
    No one alarm
Listen Jesus, do you care for your race?
Don't you see, we must keep in our place?
    We are occupied
Have you forgotten how put down we are?
I am frightened by the crowd
For we are getting much too loud
And they'll crush us if we go too far
    If we go too far
Listen Jesus to the warning I give
Please remember that I want us to live
But it's sad to see our chances weakening with every hour
    All your followers are blind
Too much heaven on their mind
It was beautiful but now it's sour
    Yes it all Gone Sour
Listen Jesus to the warning I give!
Please Remember that i want us to live!
    So, Come on Come on
    He won`t Listen to me
    Come on Listen
Come on and Listen to Me
    Listen Listen to me
Come on and Listen to me
    Listen to me ME!

Tim did a great showing the build up of emotion and desperation in this song

really regret how little jesus and judas interact in this one - their chemistry is so important to the whole show and in this massive concert version they barely have any time one-on-one, even in the choreo, even when they're supposed to be singing directly to each other. The brief moments that they do interact are great, I just wish the director had pushed them into the same space a bit more :/

It is a testament to the writers and producers that even though I was only a kid I totally got it!
