The part of this song when Judas follows Jesus as He moves across the front of the stage touching hands with the audience is one of the very best things in this whole show. Jesus was a rock star, his followers adored him, and Legend plays that perfectly. Say what you will about his singing, this is one of the things he got absolutely right.
Idk why people have slept on this version so much!! I’ve watched it multiple times with my father, grandmother, grandfather, and have even used the songs in an online contest before because they’re vocally challenging and the slightly more rock style well done. So underrated!
I remember watching this when it aired. Norm Lewis and Brandon Victor Dixon were the standout performers. John was Jesus Christ but Brandon was the superstar.
That's the point of them doing it. It was done to show the way Jesus's followers, and Jesus himself, ignored the fears Judas had until he felt the only way to save them was to betray Jesus.
… that was literally the point. Did you listen to what was being sung? The director BRILLIANTLY used the inevitable audience reaction to John at the exact point he did to make it part of the story and what Judas is seeing. “You’ve started to believe the things they say of you You really do believe This talk of God is true And all the good you’ve done Will soon be swept away You’ve begun to matter more Than the things you say!”
As good as this version was, I was disappointed with the performance of John Legend as “Jesus Christ”. I didn’t feel that power nor that intensity that one should embody when playing this character
@@Iansco1 That and it just shows that just because you’re one of the producers of this concert doesn’t mean you need to be in the title role for the sake of star power
His voice is deeper than the normal range for people cast as Jesus- but I think it still could have worked:) he just seemed to struggle to act and sing at the same time and both suffered for it. Usually if he had to, he prioritized singing:) so I think we are missing that performance portion 😬 it’s not an easy job!
It’s kind of like getting Nick Jonas for the 25th anniversary of Les Mis. Out of place with other veteran Broadway singers. They are another level of musicality and acting together. Hard to pull it off if you’re not from Broadway.
Yes, Legend absolutely not understand the assignment: this is a rock opera. He was waaaay too soft as Jesus and he didn’t want to strain his voice. BVD is great as Judas and even though he isn’t a rocker, he has some edge along with his Broadway chops.
Sadly, not even close to the original version :( Beautiful voice but Judas from 1973 was terrified and deeply concerned about Jesus' future, I don't see it here.
The guy who plays Judas should’ve gotten the role of Jesus, a better and stronger singer than John Legend (don’t get me wrong,he’s amazing when he’s singing in his style but not musical theater)
I hate I can't attend these great performances by my own people. I live in the south, so you know this type of entertainment is limited. I hate the traitor took away from the performances by making his intruding entrance.
I really watched this because of Alice Cooper. Brandon blew it out of the water. John just didnt have the voice for this. All in all not a horrible show.
This was Brandon Victor Dixon's show, not John Legend's. Dixon came as close as anyone possibly could to Carl Anderson's performance. Simply stellar.
Brandon is lovely
I was thinking the same thing. I just saw this and my first thought was how much he sounds like Carl Anderson. Really amazing performance here
First time hearing this. It is great. Wish I could of seen the play
I'm sorry, but John Legend was a piece of wet toast in this. I feel bad but he was just so boring! The rest of the cast blew him out of the water!
@@lewasil His acting was horrible. He seemed emotionless the entire time.
He ate this whole musical up. Literally one of the best Judas performances ever.
He's a good Judas. Too bad the audience was preoccupied with another personality on the stage.
You're joking, right?
He was not good.

His singing is just fine. That moment was super cringe.
@@pollypockets508it exactly captures what the song is about and what Judas is seeing, so I have no idea what you’re talking about
Brandon Victor Dixon stole the show. Legend was horrible!
Carl Anderson, Tim Minchin, and Brandon Victor Dixon are the best Judas. Great acting and amazing singing!
My favorite is always judas. He's the foundation of the show. And this judas got it right. He was a mix of the original and remake rocker edge.
Brandon Victor Dixon and Sara Bareilles were the best of this version for me. The two of them nailed their different parts!!
I’m elated that they FINALLY uploaded this. Brandon Victor Dixon was spectacular as Judas.
I don't care what anyone says, Brandon is my favorite Judas
So.. you've never seen Tim Minchin as Judas

I'm obsessed with this version. Glad I can finally watch the performance of it.
Brandon Dixon was incredible..nobody can top it now.
LOL.
Brandon the best in the entire show!
Absolutely brilliant use of the live audience here
I equate JCS Judas now with Brandon. He was mesmerizing. So talented. Here I am after Easter watching him again.
Is the audience so blinded by John legend that they just sheeple into his presence rather than the message being sang (and amazingly well)?
Kind of explains the Jesus story and how that all happened, right? A charismatic personality can make one very powerful.
That's the point of them doing it. It was done to show the way Jesus's followers, and Jesus himself, ignored the fears Judas had until he felt the only way to save them was to betray Jesus.

Brandon Dixon was fantastic as judas
Oh yes fantastic performance
Wow, this guy is the closest I've seen someone get to the magnificence of the Carl Anderson performance. And live!
LOL!
Brandon is so gorgeous and talented ❤❤ I'm in love.
My favourite Judas....and I've seen several including Murray Head in London in the 70s.
Carl Anderson was on another level
Dixon owned this!❤
The times JC Super Star was on broadcast TV, I was working. I finally found it's DVD on line. FANTASTIC PERFORMANCE "BRAVO"😊
I'm faithful to listening to the movie soundtrack. Every time I hear a cover or the original, I always sing it soundtrack style.
It was a great interpretation but Carl will always be my favourite.🙏🏻
Always loved Carl Andersons ❤

Whole show was great
Brandon Victor Dixon is hot af~!🔥🔥🔥🔥
One of the best songs
Awesome
O Carl jamais será superado.
This version is supreme. Catholics must be proud with this precious melody and review what happened in our ancient past.
JOHN WALKING AROUND LIKE THE MAN HIMSELF
Another good Judas, easily the choice role in this opera.
So great ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ John Legend who? 😏😏
Bravo!
Great take on it..but my fave Judas will ever be Zubin Varla..Gosh he owned it!!!
I adore this version next to the original’70s cast
dope
It’s too bad that there is so much commotion around this song. This is a pivotal song that drives the story
Wish there was an interview with the director about doing this!
Michaela Diamond, shes come a long way.
John Legend pales in comparison to Brandon Victor Dixon. Incredible talent.
Omg this is sono good
Beautiful voice. Personally I preferred the version with Tim Minchin.
Yeah there’s a reason some of the other live broadcasts didn’t have an audience, and this one clip shows why: they never shut up

thanks for bringing jesus again in the musical but sorry its the tedd neeley and carl Andersson for me but thanks lr. legend god bless you

This is what happens when you cast actual singers.

The audience screaming for John Legend over Judas’s voice is so ironic though😢

When they insist on using the exact score from 25 years ago note by note... unfortunately its sounds ever more like Karaoke to me.
