Between John and his thunder fingers and Keith being all over the place actually it was Pete and his prefect timing that kept the band in time. Maybe not on this song per say but normally it was just that way.
This is unique for its time because the synth loop doesn't allow for any tempo fluctuation which is why Keith is wearing headphones here. No synchronized dancers. No laser light show. No auto tune. No half naked women. No designer clothing. Nothing but real people with real talent having a really good time and sharing with all of us. RIP Keith.
But they've used backing tracks live. Ever wondered, why Keith Moon is wearing headphones taped around his head live? The keyborads are backing tracks. Just sayin'.

This (this performance in particular) is THE best version of Baba O' Reily they ever recorded--it equals if not tops the studio version. This is from the Kilburn 1978 performance--one of Moon's last. they did two shows that day, with nearly identicle set lists. this particular one from the kids are allright differs from the DVD release, but it is very similar--but its better, that's my point
Is it live or did they overdub it a little? I do agree, it's my favorite version, even better then "Who's Next". However "Won't Get Fooled Again" is better on "Who's Next" compared to the Shepperton versions....
Clearly this is not from Kilburn which was filmed in 1977 and Keith Moon wore a purple sparkle stage outfit. This is from 1978 at Sheperton Studio, and if you notice every member of the group is wearing the same outfit as Kilburn other than Keith Moon, who could no longer fit into that outfit cause he'd gained too much weight.
I waited in line to get a wristband and scored tickets to see the Who at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands back in '89 and it was a life changing experience. People camped out and partied for 3 days in the parking lot!
1975 in Philly at the Spectrum ( couldn't get tickets to the '73 concert), I was there and it was epic. Forever a Who fan. I am happy to be in good company with you all. Long Live Rock!
@@kenhoward3512 Always been my favourite album as well. Other Who albums had great music as well, but this one, every song on it was fantastic. That monolith is a concrete foundation for a mill, or mine workings notice it's on a huge rubble heap.
1979! I was a senior in high school. This was our music, back in the days you would roll your window down to talk to a friend and they were listening to the same radio station. The best times.
42 years later and this STILL gives me goosebumps. And I had a chance to see them in 1971 at Mississippi River Festival. Couldn't get off work. Turns out over 35-40,000 people were there. And I still regret not being able to go
The greatest band ever to walk the planet. Live at Leeds - best live rock album ever recorded. Saw the original four play three times in the 70s, never to be forgotten.
I saw them just after Who's next was released, sat/stood in front of the band and was deaf for nearly 3 days afterwards...my buddy caught Daultrys's broken tamborine he threw into the crowd! Memorable.
I've always and will be totally and UTTERLY, completely and helplessly in AWE and infatuated with PETE. I love his passion and just lets his body and mind do what it wishes in the moment :) That talent and perfection is amazing.
This was filmed at Shepperton Studios (1978?)I lived close by. My girlfriend and I popped into The Anchor Hotel (pub) in Shepperton Square for a drink around 6 pm one night during this era. The bar was empty except for the Who who were all in front of us leaning on the bar. They all turned around as the door slammed as we walked in. The Who had bought Shepperton Studios around that time. About a year later I was in the bar with some "2nd division roady" friends at the Warren Lodge one night (a very small hotel opposite The Anchor owned by the same guy) in walks Roger Daltrey who had had his head shaved for the part in the movie McVicar they had been filming at Pinewood (I think). Anyway it was a small bar and he was on his own and seeing the guys I was with asked if he could join us at our table. Its funny we didn't ever talk about the Who. Top man!
Only John Entwistle can take a 3 chord song and make it difficult to play on bass. He's literally using 4 fingers on his right hand and playing like 128th notes. He was the God of the instrument.
He was the one talented musician in the band. Townsend made himself famous with windmilling, jumping around and over-acting while playing the most basic chords. Keith Moon had NO technique at all. Just thrash around like the Muppets drummer. Daltry spinning his mic (whats up with that?). Meanwhile Entwistle stood calmly and quietly, playing impossibly fast, intricate bass lines. True genious
This song is special to me because it played on the radio when I was driving a high school drop out to see my CO to get her waivers for a pot possession conviction, DUI, and only having a GED. When it came on, she said it was her life story, and turned the volume up. She had been raped by her step father. I got her an interview with my CO because, for some reason, I believed in her. He gave her the waiver. Years later, she walked into my office, saluted me, and with tears running her cheeks, thanked me. Her CO sent her to the Naval Academy. She was a newly commissioned officer. She saluted me, hugged me, and thanked me for believing in her.
I remember once driving and this song came on the radio. I was jamming away in my car and a friend, she was driving opposite direction, doing the exact same thing. Next time I saw her she said “I caught you.” Lol good memories
The Ox and Roger Glover in my personal opinion are two cool cats! Lol. I would have loved those two on stage together! How iconic would that have been? Just like Keith Emerson and Jon Lord if it would have ever happened.
Saw The Who live in Cornwall in 2023 still amazing, Roger Daltrey sounded as good as the original record. Incredible band. Just a shame Moon and Entwistle were'nt there with them.
I thank God for music, for without it's magic I would a be perfect example of failed humanity. This band and this song have been my soulmates for decades now, perhaps one of the reasons I am still respirating. I am saddened by the impossibility of attending all the performances of bands that I grew up with, even more so in finding out they are not immortal and neither are their fans. I know life is much more than Rock music, yet humanity would be an alien reality (to me) without it. These performers, by virtue of their gifts and their passion, have ever filled my heart with good thoughts and feelings. I am grateful to the uploader and RUclips for this beautiful rendition of Baba O'Reily.
One of the greatest performance by a rock band period. Pure emotion, no fake ass posing, lip syncing or dancers here. Real genuine talented artists playing their own instruments. This my friends is pure and easy !
No fake ass posing?? The Who thrived on posing! Mike Watt's shorthand for singers doing thier strut was "Daltry-ing". Pete's windmill strum? And yet we all agree it rules.
Saw them in my school hall 1965 , can't explain had just been released , our youth club must've booked them before the record was in the charts , i was at the very front , pete did whack his guitar into a dummy speaker cab and waved his arm about like a loony , fantastic, I'll never forget that night .
Sad to say but the Golden Age of rock and roll is long gone and bands like this, Led Zeppelin and all of those other fantastic artists of the 70s will never be seen again. All these guys were Rock royalty !!
I dunno. I was there...but damn, young people are coming along all the time and someday, I believe, they will grab the torch and take it further down the path...it's just a matter of time :)
What a great collision of four tremendous and varied talents, combined to create, in my opinion, the greatest music of the post-Beatles era. The creativity of Pete, the superb musicianship of John, the fierce vocals of Roger, and the percussive craziness of Keith. This video could not be more representative.
Epic intro.... The bass line and the vocals are AMAZING. Townsend is playing tambourine haven't I even seen him touch his guitar so far (1:45 mark). Keith Moon on the drums. This song resonates throughout the ages and always will.
I’ve been playing bass for 30 something years and he always impresses me. One of the best ever! All together the greatest band of all time in my opinion.
Yes Moon died in 1978 but this was filmed 3 months before he died and then released in 1979 for The Kids Are All Right. Ppl commenting that the title is wrong need to chill out.
Simply amazing! Everyone focuses on Roger and Pete, but John and Kieth are ANIMALS! John’s playing is always spot on and Kieth was incredible, always impeccable time. And that, with headphones taped to his skull so he could hear the synth parts! Love The Who.
He was having a hard time locking to the synth part, which in that day with crap phones and monitors, i get it, but he also mess a couple changes up.. so no on your always impeccable time ... he never had that. Good energy. and some very cool parts... thats it
Not many times in our lives is there a band that just is perfect with not only their music and great songs but with the members. It’s very safe to say The Who in this video proves that! Keith Moon,Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Pete Townsend were the best in their day!…… not the Beatles, not the Stones..somewhere maybe in between but definitely a great band! Thank them for the music. It will live on as long as we remember.
THIS was the only version of Baba O'Riley I've ever known. I bought the soundtrack to "The Kids Are Alright" as a high school freshman, and this was the version on the album. The studio version sounds so tame and quiet in comparison, but the classic rock radio stations where I lived ALWAYS played the studio version, which I always felt was criminal. This live version has all the raw energy and power and LIFE that Rock and Roll should always have. Long Live Rock!
Pete Townsend always put on a show. I recall the first time I heard The Who. I was in a record store in Leeds, NY listening to Live at Leeds. I bought the album (still have to 55 years later) and I have loved this band ever since. This is a great version of a great song!
He does not sing the line as "Sally take my hand we'll travel south 'cross land" as everyone seems to think they do as it appears in various lyrics sites on Google. He is saying what I've always known he said because I have a degree in English literature from 50 years ago( and also also a degree in chemistry just for fun)- and the term star-crossed lovers looms large in poetry from the past. So it's only natural that a poet such as Pete Townsend would know that, as we are essentially the same age. And that's why he wrote the lyrics as : Sally take my hand We'll travel Star-Crossed lands Go ahead slow the video down down and listen. Anyway now that I got that off my chest, I want to say that Baba O'Riley is probably my favorite Who song❗❗⚡⚡ It is so goddamn energetic I cannot sit still when I hear it even though I be 76. I was 23 when this song was released, that's over half a century ago. Song still drives me crazy😱
Such a great band and such a great song. They really knew how to capture the emotions of the moment. They were way in tune with the world and their audience.
I have just been reading an article in The New Yorker, which described how a teenage Madonna shocked her conservative father by performing a dance to this song at her High School talent competition together with a friend in quite revealing costumes. Then, low and behold, this video comes up randomly.
One of the best live performances of all time. One of the best “stadium rock” songs of all time.

He was a titan. Talent beyond comprehension, an innovator, the true definition of rockstar, player, and force.
Amen
My inspiration to pick up a bass
No synchronized dancers. No laser light show. No auto tune. No half naked women. No designer clothing. Nothing but real people with real talent having a really good time and sharing with all of us. RIP Keith.
And RIP John Entwistle
And a shit pile of coke!
But they've used backing tracks live. Ever wondered, why Keith Moon is wearing headphones taped around his head live? The keyborads are backing tracks. Just sayin'.

Huh, what's that? A dancer, a laser light show, a half naked woman ... oh wait, no that's Roger Daltrey, so no half naked woman.
@@JackyThrilla Don't talk about stuff unless you know mate....just sayin.
This (this performance in particular) is THE best version of Baba O' Reily they ever recorded--it equals if not tops the studio version. This is from the Kilburn 1978 performance--one of Moon's last. they did two shows that day, with nearly identicle set lists. this particular one from the kids are allright differs from the DVD release, but it is very similar--but its better, that's my point
yeah mate!, sounds very good this version!!!
Shepperton Studios Filming for there Movie
Is it live or did they overdub it a little? I do agree, it's my favorite version, even better then "Who's Next". However "Won't Get Fooled Again" is better on "Who's Next" compared to the Shepperton versions....
Pulsar Lights 100% overdub
Clearly this is not from Kilburn which was filmed in 1977 and Keith Moon wore a purple sparkle stage outfit. This is from 1978 at Sheperton Studio, and if you notice every member of the group is wearing the same outfit as Kilburn other than Keith Moon, who could no longer fit into that outfit cause he'd gained too much weight.
I waited in line to get a wristband and scored tickets to see the Who at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands back in '89 and it was a life changing experience. People camped out and partied for 3 days in the parking lot!
The Ox holding it all together on the bass
Two things here.... John Entwhistle is a legend. I love how fat his tone is. And Pete Townsend is one weird cat.
I absolutely adore Pete’s stage presence
Same 😎🤘🏾@@alexmurphy5289
The inscrutable Ox, standing there being the God of bass lines.
1975 in Philly at the Spectrum ( couldn't get tickets to the '73 concert), I was there and it was epic.
Forever a Who fan. I am happy to be in good company with you all.
Long Live Rock!
Man ... John was the best bassist in pop music 🤩😍❤ RIP "the Ox" and Keith😭
This album, and song was released 53 years ago today!! Long live rock!!!
The famous album cover of The Who having peed on a Stonehenge-like monolith. I spent a lot of hours cruising with "Who's Next" in the cassette player.
@@kenhoward3512 Always been my favourite album as well. Other Who albums had great music as well, but this one, every song on it was fantastic. That monolith is a concrete foundation for a mill, or mine workings notice it's on a huge rubble heap.
I need it every day . . .
I saw The Who when I was 16 yrs old & I can remember this song. I am 63 now & I still have the ticket stub.
I’ll never get over Keith taping his headphones to his head 😂😂🙌
Hahahaha
I thought he had at hat on!😅😅😅😅
that's the only way they'd stay on lol
That's a latex band keeping Keith's headphones attached to his head...
0ñ
The kind of rock and roll that can peel paint off your walls.
I saw them just after Who's next was released, sat/stood in front of the band and was deaf for nearly 3 days afterwards...my buddy caught Daultrys's broken tamborine he threw into the crowd! Memorable.
Brilliant definition.absolutly genius
Can never get over how much Entwistle during this era legit looks like Ringo.
Or Derek Smalls
no shit eh? I was thinking "when did Ringo join The Who"???? I was about to google it lol.....They could be brothers.....
England is an island...😁

I've always and will be totally and UTTERLY, completely and helplessly in AWE and infatuated with PETE. I love his passion and just lets his body and mind do what it wishes in the moment :) That talent and perfection is amazing.
Listen to his Empty Glass album.
Not the nicest of human beings though, guess you can get away with it playing like that (but also his problem.)
This was filmed at Shepperton Studios (1978?)I lived close by. My girlfriend and I popped into The Anchor Hotel (pub)
in Shepperton Square for a drink around 6 pm one night during this era. The bar was
empty except for the Who who were all in front of us leaning on the bar.
They all turned around as the door slammed as we walked in. The Who had
bought Shepperton Studios around that time. About a year later I was in the
bar with some "2nd division roady" friends at the Warren Lodge one night (a very
small hotel opposite The Anchor owned by the same guy) in walks Roger
Daltrey who had had his head shaved for the part in the movie McVicar
they had been filming at Pinewood (I think). Anyway it was a small bar
and he was on his own and seeing the guys I was with asked if he could join us at our table. Its
funny we didn't ever talk about the Who. Top man!
Used to work at Shepperton studios in 88-89. From west drayton. The who used to own Shepperton
Saw them live in 73. They were astounding.
These guys knew they were way more than just musicians. The production value is off the charts. So glad this was made on film.
Only John Entwistle can take a 3 chord song and make it difficult to play on bass. He's literally using 4 fingers on his right hand and playing like 128th notes. He was the God of the instrument.
good ol Thunder fingers
Playing a Bass like a lead guitar
what a cool comment friend
His wife was particularly fond of that technique
I'm 40 and I'm teenage wasteland... this song is great, great, great! Thanks for this video!
That was amazing !!! I would liked to have seen more of John Entwhistle, that bass line holds the whole song together
I remember once driving and this song came on the radio. I was jamming away in my car and a friend, she was driving opposite direction, doing the exact same thing. Next time I saw her she said “I caught you.” Lol good memories
This is one of the best live performances of any song by any band ever, period
THe Who Brilliant but must never got see Thin Lizzy, the very best rocking band of all time
@@jamesbradshaw3389 Fucking YES. I've no idea why but Lizzy are often overlooked.
I will see your The Who and raise you a Pink Floyd Pulse
what about the drum timing being so sluggish and the mistakes he is making? Best? Really? wow...
@@morbidmanmusicand the fills at the start? Wtf Keith must have been on one
My fingers are cramping just watching Entwistle. Those were the days...
The definitive version of this song. Pete's guitar sounds incredible.
You can actually hear john in this one!
this is true rock
Yep. They all sound incredible. All 4 of them were almost equally excellent in a way you rarely see from a band.
"Live" is always a version. Unless your syncing.
Kevin, sweet profile picture! The Taurus 1 is an unrivaled bass synth.
I saw them live when this Album came out and my Ears rang for two Days, Killer Show!
Do you look to the God who created music? Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
@@konroh2 sure do
" It's only rock & roll , but I like it !!!!!!!
I saw this in 79 at the Charles in Boston.
The first 3 notes Entwistle played on that Alembic Bass changed my life...
The key word my friend is “fake “
The air cut is a real posing stuff
I'm not sure it gets any better than this. Keith and John we miss you.
Brought a tear to my eye, seeing them all alive and rockin.
Same here, literally moved me to tears.
And THIS is how it needs to be done live! Fantastic!
GREAT PERFORMANCE. One of the best I've ever seen... especially the outstanding recording!!!
Saw them in my school hall 1965 , can't explain had just been released , our youth club must've booked them before the record was in the charts , i was at the very front , pete did whack his guitar into a dummy speaker cab and waved his arm about like a loony , fantastic, I'll never forget that night .
When this comes on the box and I'm driving, it's impossible not to crank up the volume and play air drums.
I have been at their concert now in 2023. An unforgettable moment of my life. Simply magnificent
Sad to say but the Golden Age of rock and roll is long gone and bands like this, Led Zeppelin and all of those other fantastic artists of the 70s will never be seen again. All these guys were Rock royalty !!
Can't disagree with that, am so glad I lived in this great time of rock, 70's was a fine time to be alive.
I dunno. I was there...but damn, young people are coming along all the time and someday, I believe, they will grab the torch and take it further down the path...it's just a matter of time :)
@@cleawox You think so, they seem to be hooked on this shit they call music, all auto-tuned, lets just hope your right.

What a great collision of four tremendous and varied talents, combined to create, in my opinion, the greatest music of the post-Beatles era. The creativity of Pete, the superb musicianship of John, the fierce vocals of Roger, and the percussive craziness of Keith. This video could not be more representative.
Incredible 1970s live performance! The video quality is amazing!
One of the greatest rock bands ever.
one of?
Epic intro.... The bass line and the vocals are AMAZING. Townsend is playing tambourine haven't I even seen him touch his guitar so far (1:45 mark). Keith Moon on the drums. This song resonates throughout the ages and always will.
The most awesome song from the greatest rock band ever. And yea, I'd step on you to see THE WHO !!
This sounds amazing. Love the bass! Moon died in 1978, so this is a 1978 presentation.
Yep
From the movie premiaired 1979.
This song makes me feel alive even in the dark times
The bass sound on this performance explains the "thunderfingers" nickname for sure.
I’ve been playing bass for 30 something years and he always impresses me. One of the best ever! All together the greatest band of all time in my opinion.
I noticed that too.....
I was going to make this same comment!
Good energy. and some very cool parts... thats it
Saw The Who in concert. They never stopped during the entire show. When it was over they had left it all on the stage.
A timeless track for the ages that will ring forever more
They brought this back, this is without a doubt the best rawk vid on YT..
This is an epic video absolutely perfect performance showing the raw talent of all these guys ❤
A different time and a different place, I can't go back because I never left.

A band that is played at other bands concerts to warm you up. One hell of a supergroup. One of the best.

And that's why he wrote the lyrics as :
Sally take my hand
We'll travel Star-Crossed lands
Go ahead slow the video down down and listen.

The greatest bassist that ever walked this earth
This is amazing for sure, looks like it was filmed today not 1977
Bc it’s on film
I have just been reading an article in The New Yorker, which described how a teenage Madonna shocked her conservative father by performing a dance to this song at her High School talent competition together with a friend in quite revealing costumes. Then, low and behold, this video comes up randomly.
Ox's bass sound was just SO brash & in your FACE. Just gotta love it!
No gimmicks, don’t give a f*** about how they look, just pure power. That’s it. Great concerts.
