I worked at a aluminum head foundry many years ago. They used a resin insert for the water jacket. Now they are using a loss foam method, which removes the need for a mold and the resin inserts. If you ever want to learn about loss foam methods, search RUclips for Kelly Coffield. His methods are the easiest to follow.

They look to be cast by Dalton Foundry as there logo is between the central 2 rocker pedestals. Ive seen that logo on a lot iron heads, GM iron bowtie Vortecs, sportsman II's, mopar W2's and the list goes on. Seems like one foundry was pushing all the iron stuff out across the US.

I purchased a set of these heads from Summit, because the stock heads cracked, and most of the online auto parts stores wanted more money for remanufactured stock heads than what Summit wanted.
I was mostly after the fact that the Summit heads are better/thicker castings than the stock junkers! But it's a nice bonus that they come with stainless valves and screw in rocker studs too!

Don't have a problem with Summit not making their stuff, usually that means they've tested and assured the quality is good enough to put their name on. I've hjad great luck with things like House name Water Pumps and Timing sets etc , same with Jegs actually some were better than certain 'name' brands, and cheaper!

I've got a set of Dart 165 S/S heads on the bench I'm porting now. Exact same shift in the casting but the S/S has dual intake and valve cover bolt patterns and mine have the 2.02 & 1.60 valve sizes. I bought them bare though. I bought iron heads because they are going on a van which holds a lot more heat around the engine and I thought they would hold up a little better. Cheaper than finding a set of GM 300hp heads.

Thrilled with this video. I ordered a set of these back in January, when Summits stock was dipping into the single digits and it wasn't clear if Dart would be making more (they had just announced the discontinuation of the iron eagle line). Summits info in this head is outdated, and they advertise it as having umbrella seals and a 3 angle valve job. After having hands on 2 sets of cracked vortec 906 heads, I opted for these.
My local machine shop went over them and found the valve guides had just under 1 thousandth clearance, and one head had some chatter on the intake seat. Not bad for the price. I would love to see what these flow with just a backcut on the intake! Cant wait till the rest of my engine parts come in and I can assemble my 383 vortec.

That head is still available from summit. # SUM-151124. it's a fairly good head for applications where you need an iron head or a stock replacement vortec. I use them for SBC powered boats all the time. lake water is hell on aluminum heads. they are decent right out of the box, and even better if just some mild porting to remove the ridge you were talking about and gasket matching. I really don't like the hum on the top of the port, and I don't know how it effects flow since I don't have a flow bench. but i am sure it hurts the flow.

I hope you do more product testing in the future. You cover all the points an average guy like me without a dyno or flow bench needs to make an informed purchase. I purchased your intake dyno testing book, #54. I didn't have any of the intakes you tested, but as a low budget DYI-er, I most likely be buying one of those for my home made engine project. My combination wont be the optimum, but I will know what I am working with either way. When my magic racing/engine money comes in, I'll go pro built stuff. This will help me bridge that gap. Keep it up, thanks.

Also I found out the hard way that if they leave the bosses in for the 4-bolt Valvecovers the stock center bolt valve cover rails hit those bosses and you can’t build them on without modifying the heads or the valve covers so that’s why they machined them down

@@KingJT80when you consider what you are getting for the $ difference, well worth it. In the test 355 with 10:1 compression and a 222/230 @ 0.050 roller cam, the Etecs beat those out by over 40 hp. At the time I ran them, the Etec170s with the roller spring package were only about $300 than those Summit re-branded Darts. Those Darts were dead last in performance in a 5 way shoutout of Vortec heads. The stock casting even performed better, then again the point of those heads was for the mass engine rebuilders to have something to replace cracked stock castings with. Etec170s outperformed all other heads tested including the Bowtie 180cc Vortecs.

@@chrisreynolds6520back then they were that much. now etec 170 are about 1000 a pc from edlbrock themselves
at that point you might as well buy the AFR 190 vortecs thats are 2100 and blow all of them out of the water
or just buy the promaxx vortecs which are better than these and cost even less

For on the street the Iron heads are a giant waste of money! If i had known what I know now about vortec heads I would of spent my money on a set of Ebay DNA heads and spent the money at machine shop doing valve job! Everything vortecs cost more money and the weight of cast iron sucks!

Some racing classes require stock iron heads. The Vortec is still extremely popular choice because they're still the best flowing/performing stock iron heads by far.

Youll never feel 40 lbs behind the wheel. You would be lottery lucky if all those Chinese heads needed was a valve job
the 5 angle and tu;ip deal is pretty slick.

Well you do not have to worry about cast iron heads. Dart is discontinued cast iron heads for the small block Chevy January 1, 2023. Great. How is that made in china crap helping made in USA. I don’t want aluminum heads not for street, not for anything.

The factory have been using aluminum heads on vehicles for decades and they go 100k miles.

@@WeingartnerRacingif cost is the big issue for cast iron heads, how long before aftermarket cast iron cylinder blocks go away? If that’s really the issue is cost. Probably the market has all gone LS and it’s not cost effective to make gen 1 sbc cast iron heads because the market is small. Maybe.

@@WeingartnerRacing my friend had 400k miles on a 5.3. duramax diesels even have aluminum heads.
this isn't the 60s where aluminum is still kinda sci-fi.
