I had a set on a pump gas 355 that were gasket matched to 1206 intake and the bowls were done with a 205 intake valve. My Camaro went 11.70's with them with a solid cam, Victor jr., and a 750 Holley. They worked good for what they were.
I ran these heads on by 355. I remember when I purchased them from Summit Racing they offered them with the bowls clean up for an extra charge. That’s the ones I chose. 355 with 10.3 to 1. Ultradyne 518 / 536 lift sold camshaft with Victor Jr and 750 Holley. Engine dynoed at 437 HP and 400 LBS of torque. Was in my 69 Z28 street car full interior no cage all steel. Went a best of 11.58 in the 1/4 mile with turbo 400 and 4.56 gear. I had a 4 speed behind it and only went 11.77. Thanks for the video Eric great content as always.
In the early 80's I made a 400 mile round trip drive and paid $800 for bare Bowtie Aluminum heads. At the time the double hump heads were the hot setup for most guys and the Bowtie heads were a game changer.
The Sportsman II were my fist brand new heads. Bought them from Supershops and started grinding on them right away, right into the pushrod tube. haha I had to have the pushrod tubes drilled and a press in insert installed. Good times learning the hard way.
You see just how much work is needed to make these work. I bought a pair of GM Phase 2 Bowties (iron) in the early 90's, and 30 to 40 hours later of porting and valve seating (yeah, I had stones to work with) I had a set of heads. I eventually took one to another shop to be flowed, 262 CFM intake, 223 CFM exhaust. Not great, but the car went 10.7's. I dyno'd a street 406 a year or so ago with the same castings (untouched other than valve jobbed) and that engine struggled to make 400 HP.
I guess I'm an oddball 'cause I really like porting cast iron heads. I used to spend hours and hours on the old 487/493 castings as well as the double humps. A lot of people were on the 882 casting just prior to the Sportsman and Iron Eagle but I found them too thin for aggressive porting. I am not sure but I think the Sportsmans were the foundation for the GM bowtie variant in the final form before Vortecs. I have a set of those now to work for personal use, the market is getting saturated with them around my area with all the local tracks going to sealed crate motor rules which sux in my opinion.
love the content Eric. I can remember home porting these cast iron heads took hours and hours. Usually finished in the low 280 cfm range. To bad I did not understand flow at lower lift and always paid attention to max lift numbers (mostly around 600-650) i am sure my throats were way to big. Oh how far as a industry cylinder heads have come. Wish I had known more about lift and "under the curve" flow numbers before i purchased a pair of 235cc iron Australian Made Cylinder Heads. Do not remember the brand. They worked ok but I was disappointed when there was no difference at the track (who could afford a dyno session in 1997)
Eric if I remember correctly they advertised a 50 hp gain over stock. Have used these heads in the past. I always had issues with push rod clearance. Thanks for the info. Good job and hope ya feel better. Will be sending ya a profiler 235 head soon to do a video. Had a rough week.
Spot on memories about these heads man. I spent dayze porting these suckers out. I would put cast-iron seat inserts in for quick guide swaps cut down the tops of the guides or double Springs small block Chevy heads at around 200 cc was a big deal back then and handling these heads the right way deliver the goods. And for cast-iron heads, they were pretty crack resistant ….. great stuff, man… keep on rockin
My friend bought a set from RHS back in the early 90s he ported them and put them on a 383 with a solid roller it made really good torque for his full size blazer on 36s
i bought one of the very first set of bill mitchell heads,64cc 200 intake runners angle plugs.mine have bill mitchell stamped into the end of the heads,i paid 1200 dollars for them in the 1980s. i pulled a set of 1.94 valve double humps off and replaced them with the new heads.pushrods were .250 to short so i called bill mitchell to see if anything was wrong?the basically told me to go to hell...i ordered new pushrods and headed back to the track, these were on a 383 sbc in a 65 nova. i did not gain 1 tenth over the old fuelies,i have no clue because they were advertised as 30 to 70 horsepower gains...i still own the heads and 383 today..
Biggest factor for me in choosing a Vortec or Sportsman is reliability. I have seen way too many cracked Vortecs. In the earlier 2000's I was running a veary busy head bench and they just kept comming in and I kept throwing them in the scrap bin. They were like the modern 624 castings.
A thick deck aftermarket iron head is a better deal. Summit House Brand Vortecs.. or EQ's.. or Dart Platinums.. You want flow and reliability. If someone offered me a choice of used Vortecs or used Sportsmans.. I'd take the Sportsmans and just plan on grinding on them a little bit to grab an extra 10 or 15 cfm.
I remember back then everyone wanted double hump heads .. These days if I see someone selling double hump heads on craigslist I tell them they will never sell them they are simply not worth the time and effort even if mint let alone all the money you would need to restore a set .. double hump heads are for people doing numbers matching restorations where they absolutely need that particular casting to finish their engine. Other then that double humps are rusty paper weights.
Brings back old memory these ran pretty good on my old bracket car also ran the iron bowties off the Winston cup cars they ran great.wondering what they flowed back then☺
At least these are still available. In the 200cc intake port version with 64 and 72 cc chambers. The 220 Motown heads come with 2.08 valves and 64 cc chambers.
First heads i ported in 97’ went over 300cfm Those stock numbers are it yeah Within that year i sent em to mondello and was in his school. That school set was over 325 on his bench. This brought back great memories. Thank you ❤
Back in the late 80’s or early 90’s when these came out, these were $800 a set. Not $800 each like they are today. And I think the world products sportsman II/dart 2 heads were the same company. I think some old articles were the two separate companies today were one back then. But I don’t know. I can’t find any old original history. I’m sure there are some hot rod, or magazines from the day that tell the story. I remember reading about when these came out, one of the magazines covered them, maybe all of them. So the world products heads, all cast iron like factory heads, also the first ever replacement cylinder 7:52 head to get the approval for 49 state legal emission approved heads, because they had the egr cross over. These heads were available with straight or angle plugs, in 72 or 64 cc chambers. Screw in studs and guide plates, 200cc intake port heads. Originally these were made in Lake Ronkonkoma, Long Island Ny. Then they moved, I think in Florida now.
I used these heads on my 358 modified back in the 90's the only heads that were really available back then were Brodix G.M. performance heads and the old double humps, these heads made very good power BUT, when it came to repairing them finding seats was a huge issue, the deck of these heads was quite a bit thicker than a G.M. heads when you're limited to a flat top engine it was crucial to have that extra thick deck.im not sure, Eric could tell you better but I think the runners may have been raised a bit too but don't remember. For and "out of the box" 23degree head these were really good!
Dude trust me somebody that came from nothing but Machining heads and porting these heads were half price I threw them on my first 383 and on the 406 just a little bit of clean up and these heads Rock back then and yes my next step was running vortex select them did you had to be on target 🤘😎🤙 keep up the great content Eric
Back then Dart and World were together primarily because of explosion of Ford Mustang aftermarket. World heads was popular in the FORD market. Dart wanted in some of that action. If you notice all your Chevy aftermarket heads look closely alike the Doublehump, Bowtie, RHS, ProTopline, ProAction, other than the name they all looked and performed the same.
I run these today on a street motor 383 makes good power high velocity heads has a Cnc program for the chambers supposed to make quite a bit more power.
Hell Yeah.. I still have a set of these World II heads 200/64cc that I purchased back in 1999. At the time a set of alloy AFR’s were insane money. Been waiting for one of these flashback videos. I’d like to see how they respond with some “mild’ port clean up work. I’d say there’s a ton of these heads out there still in service.
Do you have a pic of the chambers on the 64cc heads? I've been wondering which mine are and unless they look near identical, I think I have the 72cc as in this video. Unfortunately can't use them (low compression) for my 292 build. 😑
My friends shop would put a 2.05 valve in em and with some work get them around 265 cfm ,,, they worked good on his 406 race motor , I think it made around 640hp ,, 14-1, solid roller
Thanks Eric, I hope you are able to do more "retro" stuff in the future. And thanks for that last comment that with porting they could go 300cfm because I was wondering.
I’ll never forget I wanted a set of those for my V8 s10 in the late 90’s, I was going to run a Howard’s 244-244 solid roller, a Weiand tunnel ram and 400cid I thought I’d be so fast lol I was 16
I know Bill Mitchell changed the name of the old Dart II head to Sportsman II head, because they changed foundry's. The heads were named for the Dart Foundry where they were cast. Mitchell, not wanting to get stuck with changing the head's name again, simply chose a generic term for the head, so it didn't matter who cast those heads.
I’d much rather have Sportmans on my tow truck cause vortecs crack. Sportsman II are almost indestructible, do a simple pocket port and some chamber and exhaust porting it’ll be golden.
I have a set on the porting bench right now. Heavy but cool in a classic way. not a full race portning. locking for 265-275cfm at 0.600 lift and more power and my friends 454BB (500hp). 355 solidroller and old TRW 12:1 pistons.
So I was looking at the World Products website. They claim larger flow numbers, but it’s also after a bowl blend. I guess the sportsman’s would be good for a daily. Maybe some port work. I wonder how well the 220 Motown world products heads flow. They come with 2.08 intake valves.
Man dang good thing I don't have that head I have the 220 I wonder what the flow would be. I am probably looking for dart iron eagle 200 or 215 with 49cc chamber and get them ported as best it can be for spec Sprints. But man the 12802 casting RHS would be awesome to find
This video brought a question to my mind. I have seen the Trick Flow aluminum version of the double hump & Have seen them them over 300 cfm by Straub. But i have not seen or found what is possible out a set of fully ported GM double humps castings are capable of?
Thanks for the video on the old cast iron head video. Those still don’t look great compared to the Small block Ford Cleveland/Boss 302 iron heads developed 30 yrs earlier.
We sold 12 sets the first year they were available on circle track motors we built.. every head cracked. But to worlds credit they redesigned them and sent us replacement heads. That ended the cracking problem. I spent many hours porting on those heads.. porting cast iron sucks!
I have a set of these or near these. 330 cube motor they were for. 1.94/1.5 iron 195 intake runners about ten year old new casting for heavy street use. The beef is there to build a 210 runner. My chambers are 56cc. Ferrea valves with standard locations for 4".030 bore. It wonder if they are really still as good as new aluminum casting made now a decade later. These may sail idk
I used to run the 305 ho heads and I can tell you the casting flash and core shift was bad on those. They made good power on mild small blocks with some porting because of the big increase in compression. I generally got 4 more mpg in my pickups running the 305 ho heads
I've got a set of those to put on a 400ci I've got. Mine are the 64cc tho, I wish I could find a set of 72cc tho to get the compression ratio down for pump gas without going to a really massive dish. The 200cc ports are great on a big engine like a 400ci tho.
Sharp burrs and that big Milwaukee grinder will make short work of those. I’ve seen em go 300 and they’re thick as hell. Stock they look live welding slag.
I think I have a set of angle plugs 76 cc's nowadays 20 years later they measure out about pop-up piston 200 shot of nitrous solid lift naturally-aspirated camshafts
Hi Eric, Are the S2 heads being sold now flow higher? I noticed on the website they are showing 256cfm at .600 lift. I race in a class that allows the S2 heads but doesn't allow the vortec. I've been arguing to allow vortec to run since I figured they were around 235cfm stock and would be better for guys on a budget. According to this test I'm not seeing the numbers shown on the website.
had a ported set back in 95 from Bill Mitchell Racing. 2.05 and 1.6 valves 64cc angle plugs. they were more than 800 a set for them. Think i paid around $1200 for the ported ones.
Toni from Finland wants to ask, have you ever tested and ported Ford GT 40 cast iron heads? I have them and I plan to port them, how they flow, any ideas? I put them my 87 Fox Mustang, with long tubes, Air gap and fitech fuel injection.
Thanks for sharing this Eric. What do you think or do you know what the MoTown 220's flow? Thanks in advance. Always great content Eric. Take care, Ed.
just had a valve guide crack in half , no damage to the head itself but the valve guide split in the middle on a set of these last week not sure how it happen
I have a set sbc 441x, casting 186, 291 are ported 5 angle valve job, 062 vortecs and stock sportsman 2 heads and the sportsman heads are still better as a race head as far as rpm 6k and higher
Dude fantastic content and yeah stonecutters for a b**** this is where I learned how to Port up and coming in a machine shop I was lucky the guy that taught me was Racing Pro Stock at the time and I was on Slim budget so once they were done they would eat the dark dark to heads up for half the price but then again I was in a machine shop low benches word just coming out really she had to have a big shot to be able to afford one camel hunt were not even in the picture for me I mean we had them but I thought they were just a waste of time and money when you could do these or vortex for little or nothing it helps when your family owns things
I use cast iron. Aluminum works but after a few extremely hot runs it's time for a new head gasket. Cast iron in the multi-layer steelhead gaskets with ARP head bolts and race fuel or better yet methanol gasket will last until the engine melts down
I still run these heads on my drag car. 363cu in SBC. 13.5/1 comp on methanol. Makes about 625HP. Car weighs just over 3000lbs, has gone 9.60 at 140mph.
They also had the straight plug and the 220 version for the runners I'm just a tad bit older than you I guess but probably not by much I was just raised in that world no pun intended
Boy! Those bring back memmories. Ported so many of those in the days. I kept the hospital emerg in business diging iron out of my eyeballs. I walked around blowing wads of black snot and my dinner always tasted metalic. But they would make 600 h.p. and in the day that was lots of fun. I am sure glad I dont port iron any more. Like most porters. For a very good reason.
I used some prescription eye drops called Falcon. It would numb the metal in your eyes so you could sleep. Must have also had some antibiotics in them. I later found out how well those round elastic hair bands worked at getting that crap out. I tried everything I could afford to keep the metal out of my nose and eyes. Hot steam showers and often hanging my head over a pot of steaming water with a towel over my head. That was relief. I loved the work, but it took its toll after a while. I’m just wondering about all of the beryllium copper I machined. All of the clutch dust and head gaskets I had to clean off. You had to really love your job
How much would it cost to have you port a set of those heads? Will you be doing those heads to see what works best? I remember in one of my David Vizard books that he primarily concentrated on the bowls and guide slimming to get the most gains. Anything to lighten them up a bit would be good! The lighter they get, the faster you'll go even without more power! I'd even port the coolant passages! (Actually, a good idea if you do plan to port them-weigh them before and after!). I hope you feel better soon Eric. God Bless you my friend.
292 'turbo' heads were the best production head until the bow tie head. And these were better than them. I had some ex F5000 which in the past had been 'gun' heads Those Darts are quite poor in finish than the ones I used in the very early 90s. Though I ported mine within reason as big as they would go. A lot of work and out in the sun so I could see! Why did they ever make 76cc? It never made sense. Mine were 64cc cut to around 62cc after I finished the chambers. I used 2.08 intakes. They were sold to me as 195cc intake runners. They were never flowed They worked far better than my ported 462 Fueliies. Yet the low speed driveability was still good. Street parades etc and just driving through the pit paddock. Original Victor Jnr I then went to the Victor race heads and 2925 intake that made more power and had nothing under about 3500 rpm. Driving the pit paddock was slip the clutch the whole way.15k limits were a pain with a 2.2 first gear. All the GM heads would struggle to take larger dia springs. 292s were better ofcoure as they were made as a performance head. And the OEM pockets did not really allow for race cams of the late 80s. Factory heads were a good deal lighter than the Darts which were heavy. The Darts had machined rocker cover rails as well. And they were slightly taller
Haven't said a 64cc angle plugs how to do some Weld work and flange work talking about 10 years I've got thrown on my way to get them and good shape flat top pistons tide head gasket about 550 lift 360 cubic inch 825 carburetor 8200 are they long
New to the channel I've watched your video on the Chinese knock off dart heads. I'm working on a set of pro 1 200 cc sbc. Hoping to see some of your thoughts on those or some flow tests that you have on the dart pro 1. Thanks in advance
I remember these hads win they came out had set sportsman's bought set elderblock car pickup good bit I should had sportsman port Lee Morgan lives near me he pointed hundreds of them
Sorry my voice thing not doing well I just want to say who better than a Vortec head all day just the temperature difference of but they run is worth it bulletproof straight motor I promise I swear I thought that small set was ruined they have grinded imported to hell out of it I lived in machine shops I put them together I swear it's amazing
Hello how much to flow a set of speedmaster big block Oldsmobile heads I bought them assembled still in the box I called speedmaster after I bought and asked them what they flowed nobody knew lol thank you

At least these are still available. In the 200cc intake port version with 64 and 72 cc chambers.

I ported cast iron for years. Now I will not touch it.
Mostly what we do. All the dirt cars mandate cast around here

Thanks Eric, I hope you are able to do more "retro" stuff in the future. And thanks for that last comment that with porting they could go 300cfm because I was wondering.
I’ll never forget I wanted a set of those for my V8 s10 in the late 90’s, I was going to run a Howard’s 244-244 solid roller, a Weiand tunnel ram and 400cid I thought I’d be so fast lol I was 16
Bought a pair at Super Shops back then, pocket ported on a 350 with Lunati 40119 11.5-1 compression was a fun and dependable engine.
The man that did valve jobs for me used stones he did a good job. Bronze liners and a port job, 225.00
I did a 'home port job' on a set of old double hump heads and they flowed 225 cfm with the stock valves. I expected more out of these Dart heads.
The 225 Motown iron heads are nice too if you can still find a set
they are a good head, just not out of the box. they are a nice starting point, and they come alive with some work.
Trickflow was the head to have that I remember hearing about in the 90's. Never knew anybody that actually owned any😂😂
Those were my first set of heads after the double hump. Ported they worked well in the day
I know Bill Mitchell changed the name of the old Dart II head to Sportsman II head, because they changed foundry's. The heads were named for the Dart Foundry where they were cast. Mitchell, not wanting to get stuck with changing the head's name again, simply chose a generic term for the head, so it didn't matter who cast those heads.
I have a set of these on my 355, may not be fancy but I think they work great and my engine is a little monster
We used the 72 cc Sportsman 2 on our 400 inch pump gas engines. They came with Manley valves if you bought the head complete.
Flow is part but port velocity also is a big factor and Gm did their homework back in the day on Vortecs!
Memories of the 500$ claimer modifieds...I wore out a set of those heads redoing them so many times.
Question is and maybe I missed it. How much can your pro porting make the iron sportsman flow?????
I’d say alot of those heads got sold to dirt track racers, didn’t some of the lower classes have to run cast iron heads?
Hi Eric,
Are the S2 heads being sold now flow higher? I noticed on the website they are showing 256cfm at .600 lift. I race in a class that allows the S2 heads but doesn't allow the vortec. I've been arguing to allow vortec to run since I figured they were around 235cfm stock and would be better for guys on a budget. According to this test I'm not seeing the numbers shown on the website.
I currently have a set of these on a 406 sbc do you have any tips on how to properly port these heads? Tks...
had a ported set back in 95 from Bill Mitchell Racing. 2.05 and 1.6 valves 64cc angle plugs. they were more than 800 a set for them. Think i paid around $1200 for the ported ones.
I have a set of sportsman 2s in my shop right now! Lol.
Toni from Finland wants to ask, have you ever tested and ported Ford GT 40 cast iron heads? I have them and I plan to port them, how they flow, any ideas? I put them my 87 Fox Mustang, with long tubes, Air gap and fitech fuel injection.
I had a nightmare experience with the company about 2005 that broke my will for high performance
Eric , do the Vortec heads have the same cracking issues that the Magnum heads have , in my opinion that the OE's making everything lighter ?
Near 30 years on the ones I had are still going. I have never heard of them cracking
Used 72cc on some 406 oval track stuff but did some work to them.
Thanks for sharing this Eric.
What do you think or do you know what the MoTown 220's flow?
Thanks in advance.
Always great content Eric.
Take care, Ed.
I kinda want to know the same thing because I have those on my 359 engine on my wingless spec Sprint
just had a valve guide crack in half , no damage to the head itself but the valve guide split in the middle on a set of these last week not sure how it happen
I have a set sbc 441x, casting 186, 291 are ported 5 angle valve job, 062 vortecs and stock sportsman 2 heads and the sportsman heads are still better as a race head as far as rpm 6k and higher
Back then the Pontiac aluminum heads by NASCAR teams where the sht.had a set afr 220s bought in 95 still got them
Dude fantastic content and yeah stonecutters for a b**** this is where I learned how to Port up and coming in a machine shop I was lucky the guy that taught me was Racing Pro Stock at the time and I was on Slim budget so once they were done they would eat the dark dark to heads up for half the price but then again I was in a machine shop low benches word just coming out really she had to have a big shot to be able to afford one camel hunt were not even in the picture for me I mean we had them but I thought they were just a waste of time and money when you could do these or vortex for little or nothing it helps when your family owns things
A lot of meat there had very good luck with them should have collected more of them
Yeah back in the day these were $800 a set! Now they are over $800 each!!
So in the demo world where stuff gets super hot, is aluminum or cast iron the best?
I use cast iron. Aluminum works but after a few extremely hot runs it's time for a new head gasket. Cast iron in the multi-layer steelhead gaskets with ARP head bolts and race fuel or better yet methanol gasket will last until the engine melts down
Iron holds up well, aluminum can be welded when it cracks
Can you make 550hp with these? If not, what do you think they could make realistically?
@@hughobrien4139 we all did it. Most of us survived like cock roaches. Lol. But no more. It would take big money to get me to port iron today.
Yuk!
I don’t port cast iron.
I think hvh has some cnc programs for several iron castings, also talk to Brezenski, they do strictly iron head porting.
292 'turbo' heads were the best production head until the bow tie head. And these were better than them. I had some ex F5000 which in the past had been 'gun' heads
Those Darts are quite poor in finish than the ones I used in the very early 90s. They were never flowed
They worked far better than my ported 462 Fueliies. Yet the low speed driveability was still good. Street parades etc and just driving through the pit paddock. Original Victor Jnr
I then went to the Victor race heads and 2925 intake that made more power and had nothing under about 3500 rpm.
Do you think these, or the Iron Eagles or Motowns and whatever World Products does. are the better iron head?
Iron Eagle Platinum
Haven't said a 64cc angle plugs how to do some Weld work and flange work talking about 10 years I've got thrown on my way to get them and good shape flat top pistons tide head gasket about 550 lift 360 cubic inch 825 carburetor 8200 are they long
New to the channel I've watched your video on the Chinese knock off dart heads. I'm working on a set of pro 1 200 cc sbc. Hoping to see some of your thoughts on those or some flow tests that you have on the dart pro 1. Thanks in advance
For whatever reason dart heads hardly show up.
What can you tell me about chevy S/B Bowtie heads #14011034 phase 2?
Why don't you do a review of the Dart Iron Eagle heads .
Awesome you did say it thank you
Bought a pair from jegs back 1990
You kind of sound like Ernest from all those Ernest movies goes to camp goes to jail ECT
You sound like Ernest p worl right now. When you said "yes and no"
Hello how much to flow a set of speedmaster big block Oldsmobile heads I bought them assembled still in the box I called speedmaster after I bought and asked them what they flowed nobody knew lol thank you
These kinda squashed the resell value on production iron heads when they came out.
Isn't this the casting that the Chinese DNA/Enforcer/Skip White etc are based off of?
No, they are based off of the dart pro 1 platinum 200cc head.
With an exchange of money 💵, I'll get you a pair of DART Iiron Eagle 200cc angle plug heads, or the Dart Pro-1 200cc aluminium heads, and I'll port them to my spec for you.
