      Nick Murray: I notice you're using Apple Play, I tried it for like 15 min, found it to be annoying without any improvement in usability. And it requires Siri to be on constantly on iPhone, draining the battery. Have you tried using just Porsche's excellent interface?

    Our 2007 Boxster S also has an intermittent issue with opening our garage door. I think it has to do with her mood. If she is frisky and wants to be driven more she will not allow us to put her to "bed" in the garage. On the other hand, after a long drive, if she is cranky and tired, she cheerfully opens the door.

      Alcantara is a synthetic fabric that used to be called "ultrasuede." It went out of fashion in the 70s until auto manufacturers used the Italian name for it and reintroduced it. It's a cheap material compared to leather or premium cloth.

    Sweet! I have to tell ya though, It annoys the hell out of me when we pay so much for these cars and have any problems at all. Last week my center retractable dash display just stopped and is now jammed halfway out. So, I have a 200 mile drive to the Audi dealership next week.
    I'm glad this one is less problematic than the 991.1, Great info on the stereo too! Thanks Nick!

    Another great video Nick, I watched your comments on your 991.1 avidly before I specced my car. I also have a manual but decided to get a new C2 991 Black Edition, mainly for the naturally aspirated engine & with a sports exhaust which is a joy. When the 991.2 was launched I initially thought I'd made a mistake, but on noise alone comparing mine with yours I'm pleased I followed my heart. The noise in the video sounds good, but so liner across the rev range. I can virtually play a tune with the 991.1! I plan to take a 991.2 out for a drive soon so I'll have a more informed view. Keep up the great work, regards Montcoffer

    We pretty much have the exact same cars but opposite transmissions for each. I have a MK7 GTI with a manual and a 991.1 C4S with the PDK. I prefer manual for daily driving because it keeps me involved and I wanted PDK for my 911 because I wanted the best possible performance. Love your channel Nick, keep up the good work.

    I TOTALLY understand about the "too much power". I had the same issue when I moved from my older SL350 to the newer SL500 (4.7 twin turbo V8). I went from 245hp to 455hp with 512ft of torque and the issue was that when you floor it, you have that glorious feel of power... but it's over in 4 seconds... The SL350 I got to feel it and hear it and enjoy it more. I have an AMG GT now but if I ever pick up an SL as a fun/daily I'll go for the SL350...

    Interesting comment on insurance, I found the same and was completely shocked!
    Went from 2014 BMW 650i GC to 2017 911 Turbo S Cabrio (literally +$130k more than the 650i) and insurance went down a few hundred dollars. I also asked my agent and rec'd the same feedback. Certainly no complaints, but expected it to double... Very nice surprise indeed!
    Great video as always!

    Have only recently started watching your videos Nick. What a great guy! Good taste in the car you picked. Very informative videos. If I ever have the money, I'll probably make a very similar choice as you. 911 C4S! Maybe with PDK though for fuel economy. I live in Minnesota, so AWD would really help, and I agree that the Turbo S just has too much power for USA speed limits. Cheers.

    Well Nick... Three months ago I started shopping for a 997.2 series 911. Realizing how the popularity of this generation has held values higher than I expected, I moved my focus to the 991.1. I found 2, C4s that were well speced and priced fairly but... learning that a base model 991.2 (arguably) outperforms the 991.1 S-models, won my purchase. After all, the improvements to the PDK, steering and PCM, combined with the desireable aspect of the newer aesthetics along with significant warranty remaining... the 2016~2017 Base Carrera seems like an excellent value to me. 'Settling' for this 2017 Base model saved me 6k over the 2015 C4s I almost bought and because it's a Porsche CPO, the 4 years warranty provides a lot of confidence. This is my second week with the car and I'm very happy to have made this choice. Thanks a bunch for sharing your experience and insight on the 911 which really helped me a lot.

    Great video Nick. Happy you are enjoying your beautiful 911. I'll echo what you said about insurance. I had a Honda Crosstour as my DD, and when I bought a brand new '14 Corvette Stingray, I added it to my policy. To my surprise, the premium on this brand new car with 460 HP worth about $70K at the time, was about two thirds of what the Honda's premium was. The Honda was probably worth $24K at the time. I never wrote to the company but asked my agent about it, he said a newer car has more safety features, which the vette definitely didn't. I left it alone!

    After watching your video, I am seriously considering cancelling my 2017 4S order. While the problems you describe may not affect the car's performance or leave you stranded (like your 991.1), they are hardly "minor". The leather tag on the console trim would be inexcusable on a 30K Hyundai, not to mention a 130K Porsche. The voice command issue suggests a software bug that was rushed into production (see RUclips Motormouth Canada for a 4S review also showing software issues). The homelink transponder is a 20+ year old technology, hardly groundbreaking- it should work flawlessly in cars at this stage. In any case these issues reflect a serious lack of quality control from an automaker that supposedly epitomizes attention to detail. I sincerely hope these are all the bugs you will have to face, esp after the ordeal you went through with the 991.1. Best of luck, and I love your videos- they are the most entertaining and informative 911 reviews on RUclips!

    Nice video, thank you! FWIW my first car was a (heavily) used ‘79 Ford Cortina Ghia, 2.0l, 3 speed auto, that leaked so much oil my father made me park it down the street. It was white with a black vinyl roof, rear window louvre, and a pop up sunroof with a big eagle sticker on it. But that’s not the best part. The best part was that the previous owner had fitted musical air horns.

    Love your explanation about engagement. This is a super useful video. A clear explanation about the pros and cons of the manual and the 18 ways. You are the second reviewer i respect that suggests the smaller engine may be the most engaging drive. My Gran Turismo is engaging to drive at all speeds and I've been considering a Targa as the next car. From your review the base Targa 4 may be the way to go. I don't care about top speed, I care about having fun every day. Thanks for the great reviews.

    • @NickMurray
      @NickMurray  7 лет назад +2

      Something to look closely at before considering the Targa is the handling, they do not handle anywhere as well as the other 911's because they are so top heavy, even with PDCC they have noticeable body roll compared other 911's.

    Hey Nick glad to hear your premiums are so affordable. As the owner of a 16 Cayman manual I can attest that my premium is about $450 even though I have minimal coverage. I think you are spot on in your explanation; Porsche owners tend to be responsible drivers (most anyway).

  • @JPandCompany
    @JPandCompany 7 лет назад +7

    Having those small software issues kind of scares me. I've had a ton of those in my 991.1. Makes me a little hesitant to get another 911.
    As far as my premium, I pay $90/month for my Carrera. 35 year old male with a mostly cleaner driving record. Our 2017 C300 coupe is actually more expensive than the 911.

    Nick your videos crack me up,i always look forward to them!! ref insurance for a 911,back here in the uk my insurance is horrendous ,made me have a heart attack especially going from a 997 cabrio which was pretty decent to my 991carrera 2 where it doubled!!! silly thing was I bought the car in such a rush I hadn't checked out the insurance,ouch!!! Ref the 991.1 entry level Carrera being slightly underpowered you are spot on,i found my 997 Carrera 2 more responsive and definitely more oomph although to be fair iev only had the 991 two weeks so haven't gone crazy in it yet.think I might take the cat out in the Porsche seeing as you take your dog out in yours all the time!! and by the way absolutely love your Carrera 4,the exterior and interior are awesome,i wish id bought a blue one now!!

Would you please consider 1 month leases for all of your cars so that we can constantly get these videos?:) Also, love that you exposed the great myth that smaller, turbo engines get better gas mileage than larger NA ones. In real world driving, the opposite is often the case since people with performance cars tend to want to drive them like performance cars. Imagine that!

    Plus I love your opinion on it being possibly overpowered. I completely agree, it's always more fun to drive a slow car fast then to drive a fast car slow. Anything more than 350HP really starts to make the car too much to ring out on a back road and see how the car really behaves.
    Also it's Bur- mes- ter, not ber- meis- ter. But then again you Sa-Baah- ru so getting you to speak like an American is probably pointless.

    Hey Nick! Enjoying your channel. Great stuff. Have refined my choices based on your experiences. Have you mounted winter rubber for these last months for driving in CT?

    Even with the turbo, it still sounds good. Especially at high revs!

    You deserve every ounce of the success getting an exceptional car. Enjoy.
    Suspect your wireless garage door problem is the frequency noise around the garage sensor and the low strength of the frequency in the car.

    Totally agree with your comments on power Nick. More power sounds better but you can't use it - I had a GTR a couple of years back and best analogy for it on the road was akin to driving an F1 car down a pit lane. That car lasted just 4 months!!!

    LOL! Hey Nick, follow my simple rule of thumb. Always roll down your driver window whenever you're getting out the car with the keys in the ignition. Also, you did not take my suggestion a month ago to put your cute little pooch in a harness. Lesson learned!

      All rolling down the window will do is make it easier for a carjacker to jump in.
      Better yet, follow MY simple rule of thumb...never allow an animal in a 911

    Great, fun video as always Nick. Was wondering if you could do a little video about the sport chrono. I think I want one in my next Porsche, but its hard to find anyone online making videos showing exactly everything it does. What I'd like to do is use the sport chrono in conjunction with the nav system to time myself around the various country roads that I rip around on. Does the sport chrono store data ? How do you activate the clock, etc etc etc....

    Nick like your videos.In PDK cars all you need to do to get coast mode is pull on the up paddle.

    Happy you enjoy the new ride so much! I've driven quite a few 991.2s by now thanks to my new job and I have to say the engine is still a slight let down for me. Compared to the 3liter BMW M engines the responsiveness, turbo lag and sound doesnt excite on a similiar level in the 991.2. Power is impressive though, you can easily get 480hp with a Techart tune and run as fast as 11.3 sec to 125mph in a C2S. I also had the pleasure to do a Norfschleife training in a fully loaded press car C2S with manual, PDCC and PCCB which wa excellent. If you get the chance try the Michelin tyres as an performance upgrade at some point. They work really well on the 991.2. Greetings, Guido

    Hey Nick - great video as always! I just picked up my Macan S and I believe when connected to Apple Car Play the voice control doesn't work, you need to use Siri button on the PCM control. I too also can't get HomeLink to work. :(

    I have the exact same problem with Homelink garage/gate remote system built in to my Prius. I have no idea why it usually works but then sometimes it just refuses to work.

    Nick, I had this issue in my BMW as well with the "HomeLink" not always working.
    Crazy suggestion... Take the cover of your garage opener off and pull the little antenna(so it's outside the cover) then put the lid back on.
    I don't know why...but my Homelink now works 100% of the time.

    Thanks for sharing that about the insurance. Our 991.1 is has low insurance cost as well- we were puzzled but didn't want to question it! Also, does the new Bose system have dynamic compression? It used to be a common feature but I can't find it on our stereo. We have a convertible, and the last thing we need is dynamic range. As it is, we're constantly turing the volume up for the quiet bits, and then hurriedly turning it back down for the loud bits.

    Dont forget the big advantage of the C4 models, as they are wider and have the beautiful light bar :)
    HomeLink was a big problem on my Boxster Spyder as the signal is really weak. But I have fixed it with a signal booster you install in your garage. It cost 50€ and works so amazing. I can give you a link if you want? You can open your garage from like a kilometer away :D

    I lived in Massachusetts for 12 years and hated every moment. No place to drive my Cayman or Corvette. Rutted roads huge potholes damage both cars. Now I'm back in my beloved California driving a 2014 Base Cayman and enjoying the awesome roads again

    Nick, How do you keep the 911 so clean in winter? Handwash or car wash place? If you do it yourself, please make a video on what you think is important for car geeks to remember when they wash their own cars. Thanks!

    • @opulan
      @opulan 6 лет назад

      rbmedd put a good layer of wax or some sort of coating like ceramic on it and you can just blast dirt off with a high pressure washer

    Hey Nick had a thought on your garage door issue. LED lights bulbs placed into the garage door opener will interfere with the garage door opener frequency transmitted from the car. Try removing the light bulb from the garage opener and then using the opener in the Porsche.
