    1. You have been fooled to believe that a German is epitome of success.
    2. You have over paid.
    3. You will never use the potential of your over engineered car.
    4. Your car is not as quick as a Tesla P100D's 0 to 60 time i2.2 sec.
    5. Porsche is boring.

    • @NickMurray
      @NickMurray  7 лет назад +796

      1. Are you saying I should become a German to become successful? My German is poor but love German bread so who knows? 2. I did over pay for my car, I also over paid for my shoes, it was enjoyable, I will do it again. 3. The potential I am hoping to achieve is to transport my dog to the park at a moderate speed every day. 4. My car is not as fast as a lot of cars, I can tell you this keeps me up at night but I hope to put some more stickers and stripes on it which will make it go faster. 5. This one is my favorite, I can just see you getting to #5 and running out of ideas so you anger typed 'Porsche is boring' then sat back and thought 'that will show him!' Nice!

      I always love the Tesla comparisons. You can tell they've never driven either a Tesla or a 911.
      If you're going to compare a Tesla to a 911, you need to end your post with "until you need to actually turn."

    Park in gear. As a manual driver I always park in gear. You get used to it after driving on a track. If you apply your e-brake after a hot session, you'll warp the rotors.

    Nick, the thumping on the steering....left and right turn is not just on the 911 - or cold weather, it is a disturbing feeling in the 911, Boxster and even the Panamera. A damp driveway with a tight turning circle see my cars bobbing about. Keep up the good work....glad you came to your senses, enjoy the Porsche!

    • @snark907
      @snark907 6 лет назад

      Perhaps you just need a new mental model. I use the mental model of the old fashioned parking brake pedal. You push it in with your foot to set it. You pop it back out to release it.

    • @Bagger1978
      @Bagger1978 6 лет назад

      That is where I believe they came up with the concept and the similarities in release position instead of the center console like other cars. All cars I've driven with a foot parking brake, you always pull on a release handle from that same area of the dash. Seems pretty straight forward concept to me.

    I have a 981 Boxster and I can confirm that the e-brake switch is the most stupid thing ever made, it always takes me a couple of pushes and pulls to engage it because it just works the opposite as it should be! But apart from this I love it, it's even practical for the size having 2 boots front and rear with plenty of space for trolleys and bags

    I have one suggestion to add to help reduce bolster wear when you're getting OUT of the car, which is also a problem. Because the seats are so low and so deep, it's actually pretty easy to put your left hand on the bottom door sill and lift yourself up and forward slightly to reduce dragging yourself across both the bottom and side bolsters. I've used this technique with my prior 911 and another sports car with good results.

  • @Dommas1106
    @Dommas1106 7 лет назад +10

    The Handbrake System is similar to Mercedes. This comes from the older Mercedes which had a manual handbrake, tightened by pushing a pedal left beside the clutch. To unlock the handbrake you had to pull a handle left beside the steering wheel.

    • @lonestranger
      @lonestranger 7 лет назад +3

      My thoughts exactly. It's not just Mercedes, but most (every?) vehicle with a foot-actuated parking brake releases this way. Foot-actuated parking brakes are very common on American trucks, vans, SUVs, and cars that might be equipped with a full or split bench seat, e.g. :www.ford-taurus.org/taurusinfo/Features/P-brake.jpg
      Having never driven a vehicle with an electronic parking brake, I'd expect to pull the handle to release it, especially if it was located on the dash below steering column. With the console-mounted switches, pulling up to engage it makes more sense because that's how handbrakes operate.

    • @paullincoln
      @paullincoln 7 лет назад

      Actually whilst Mercs with foot operated parking brakes use a pulling motion on the hand release handle, the older Mercs like W115 and W123 (if memory serves me right) are full hand operated. Engagement is by hand pulling a handle and release is twist and push. But its ok... whatever 911 dishes out... i'll take

    • @vodkatron
      @vodkatron 6 лет назад

      Also this way on newer Volvos, maybe it's common in european cars? Seems logical way to me - you put brake "on" by pushing it and releasing pulling it "off"?.

  • @julianjacobs5982
    @julianjacobs5982 7 лет назад +10

    Nick, there's a very good reason why dash mounted handbrakes are pushed for ON and pulled for OFF (same as in Mercs).
    I got out out of my Merc and accidentally knocked the handbrake with my foot. If the handbrake worked in the reverse way, it would have turned off and the car would have rolled away just as I was getting out.

      Nick, why not leave car in gear when parked? That leaves an extra layer of protection against it rolling away. At the track you can't use the parking brake until the rotors cool so that is what we do if wheel chocks not available.

    Wow, that actually was really helpful! I get that "thump-thump-thump" on my Audi A5 when reversing full steering lock at low temperatures, and I was wondering what it was! It's probably a similar steering setup to yours, so that explains it. Glad to know it's normal though!

    I like the parking break direction. Pull to release is like an old style release where you pull to disengage the pedal parking break.

    Watching you chase your new 911 rolling down the drive was hilarious but I am happy all turned out well. I am a sucker for dark blue cars, wish my M2 came in the blue you have. Car looks great, looking forward to more videos as the weather changes up north.

    Great video! your first two points are unbelievable ! especially the battery one lol! ... nice method on the bolster too i might try it on my car.. not sure how effective it would be since the 911 is a bit low but i try to put my hand on the ledge of the car (bottom of chasis/door frame if that makes any sense), then guide myself into the seat (use to do this in my old car because of recaros!)

    Thanks brother, your videos are very informative. Porsche is not just a means of transportation, it’s an extension of ones personality. If people knew about the history of the 911, they won’t talk negative. By the way keep going, all the very best from Oman.

    so it's the cold tires that were making the thumping noise. good thing I saw this video, I was planning on taking my 991.1 in for that noise. Thx Nick.

    I recently acquired my 2017 911 C2 ...sport exhaust and chrono package is a must, I can't get enough of downshifting pop out exhaust amazing sound in sport mode....never been happier... it's well worth the money spent.....and for all those Porsche haters out there (even though I am big Alfa guy also) feel sorry not reaching your dreams!
    Thank you Nick for #5 explanation tire steering clinking sound it happened to me few times last week when weather was ~10 degrees in Northeast.

    Love the Talk Talk intro music. Just love it. I've got a 996.2 C4S and I get the front wheel bump thing here in the UK , and only in winter. I can get golf clubs in the back, but my previous car,a Boxster could swallow them in the rear trunk, and the trolley and sports bag in the front trunk. The Boxster is TRULY PRACTICAL. Bollox to the small people though....

    my 2 and 4 yr old boy loved climbing into the trunk or frunk, having me close them inside so they could pull the glowing handle. good times!
    hilarious video when the 4S started rolling backwards and you and dogs came sprinting. glad that ended well for you!

    I agree with a post below, I've not had a standard/manual in a while but every time I did I always left it in 2nd gear or any gear for that matter, just as a backup. Glad your pretty 911 didn't go smashy smashy :)

    Great video. Forgetting to engage the parking brake or not engaging it correctly on the manual Porsche cars is very common problem, and watching your video brings back few horror moments. My house is located on steep hill, and I own 3 manual Porsches & 4 PdK Porsche's, and I recall running after my cars on several occasions trying to catch them as they roll back down this steep hill. Scary moments.....The problem gets even more complicated as the standard for Porsche to engage the parking brakes is different between various Porsche cars. For 911, Caymans, Boxsters the e-brake is located vertically below the ignition and as you pointed out you must push it inwards to engage the parking brakes and according to Porsche they claim since it is located close enough to the pedals it is treated as a foot brake which is engaged by pushing your foot to engage it. On Macans, Cayennes the E-Brake is located horizontally on the console below PDK lever and you must pull on it to engage it which is opposite of 911 ebrake, but matches most other cars, and the idea here since it is located next to you it is treated as a hand brake and hand brake are engaged by pulling upwards. After complaining to Porsche about why different standards and how confusing it is, I was educated about their philosophy and why they have 2 different standards for these ebrakes. So now when I am in a 911, cayman or Boxster i train my mind to think it is a foot brake and I must push it in like a foot brake to engage it and when I am in a Macan or Cayenne I tell myself I have a hand brake and I must pull it upwards to engage it. Hope this helps explain the wisdoms of Porsche.
