      Almost every third world and developing countries have manual transmissions in majority of their vehicles. Manuals are not that special, maybe for you but not for everybody else. It’s quite baffling why westerners are so hyped for such prehistoric transmission.

    • @sshah2545
      @sshah2545 3 года назад +7

      TheGomezIndustries lol, we’re not hyped about anything prehistoric.
      Yes, as always, everyone outside North America wants to wonder why were so obsessed with manuals. Well were not.. statistically 98% of cars sold in NA are auto. 2% or less are manual.
      That 2% of us, the exact kind of people who would go out of their way to pick manual over automatic, are a vocal and romantic bunch. We miss manual. There’s no debating efficiency, fuel economy, even performance now leans towards auto, but manuals are still more fun.
      Even PDK vs manual, you have to admit the stick is more fun.
      So, for you where manual are common, easy to find secondhand, even easy to find new... well here they are not. Here you have to look hard and you may not find the right car you are searching for.
      So, we miss manual, and we have every right to miss it. Don’t be that “non-westerner” who never shuts up about how common they are and westerners are just dumb.
      Seek to understand.

    • @TheGomezIndustries
      @TheGomezIndustries 3 года назад +1

      @Shikhar Shah
      Well, help me understand. Manuals suck in traffic and slow on the track, how is that fun? Some guys say it’s the “driver involvement” but that thing will get real old real fast as you lose time lap after lap to DCTs. When did losing a race became fun?

    • @sshah2545
      @sshah2545 3 года назад +7

      TheGomezIndustries lol, how many people do you know who race? Like literally RACE? I’m sorry, I won’t be able to help you understand. If you don’t get it, you just won’t get it. Driving manual obviously doesn’t mean that much to you.
      Very few people track their car, and those that do, go to open track days. At that point, I promise you, nobody gives a fuck when you’re driving a Miata/BRZ and being passed by M4s and 911s with DCTs.
      The dudes in the slow ass BRZ are probably having more fun, because of driver engagement. You’re not competing against anyone but yourself, and you’re having fun doing it.
      I drive a Subaru WRX, I have owned 3 faster, more expensive, “luxury” vehicles.
      I chose to go from those cars to a WRX manual. And now I drive this thing like grandma most of the time, except for rare occasions on the highway where I get to open it up and go fast.
      For me, driving 2km to the grocery store at 60kmh is fun because I get to shift gears. I love it.
      You don’t. And you obviously don’t get it.
      ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      Theres a reason for that… its because their cars don't suit manuals. They're performance cars and are so damn fast that a manual gearbox simply wouldn't work. However the majority of sports car manufactures like Porsche offer manuals because they're drivers cars and don't focus as much on lap times and 0-60.

    I’ve been driving manuals for decades. Backroad touring, auto crossing, track days... I’ve mastered heel toe, can double clutch, and even worked out how to change gears without disengaging the clutch (using the throttle to manipulate the internals of the gearbox). I’m comfortable enough to say that I’m an expert with a manual clutch.
    At this point, I think I’ll take the PDK. The part of the drive I take the most pleasure in now is in feeling out the suspension and balancing the car. Not having to work a clutch and shifter gives me more brain cells to focus on what the car is telling me at all stages of a corner.

      The problem with PDK is, if you don't want the next gear up (or down if you're in top gear) or the other gear in instant reserve (in this video's case, third was in instant reserve, on the other clutch, in case Nick floored it which he did) then it definitely takes an appreciable fraction too long to switch gears. It doesn't happen often but if you're cruising in top gear and select a different gear on the other clutch's shaft with the paddle, it feels like it takes ages.

    I've driven manuals my entire life and consider myself a diehard manual fanboy, but I'd seriously consider the PDK if I was buying a 911. That extra speed as well as the ability to focus on other things while on the track are very appealing to me. Nick, love your videos! Small PDK tidbit: To engage the coasting mode in manual, you do not pull both paddles, you shift up *beyond* the highest gear (which might be 7th, but when you're driving slow might come earlier). This puts the transmission into the same coasting mode as in automatic, with the gear still showing and, most importantly, engaging the gas pedal will get you out of coasting mode immediately. Pulling both paddles is more akin to putting the gear lever into Neutral.

    Nicely done as always. When I ordered my M2 I had an internal conflict over transmission choice. I have driven manual cars for many years and enjoy manuals but decided to go with the DCT for those reasons you listed. I have to say I absolutely love the DCT, my M2 is the first car I have ever driven with one. Many like to debate what is the "real" drivers gearbox which is really a silly use of energy. As car people we should be happy to have two excellent choices in cars like the 911, Cayman, M2, M3 etc etc rather than trying to shame those who chose a DCT. I really appreciate the fact that you present the information in a way that shows the benefits of both. I get really tired of reading reviews or seeing video reviews where the journalist (loose definition in most cases) says the manual transmission is the only option to select.

    This is a really good, honest, and informative comparison! Readers should note that not all "automatic" transmissions are created equal. Dual-clutch transmissions, like Porsche's PDK, have some characteristics that owners need to understand (e.g., don't "crawl" in traffic with a PDK). And lastly, Porsche's dual-clutch transmission is arguably an example of one of the best "automatics" around for sporty driving.

    This is really great information. All of these things you mentioned, I am aware of from time to time. But seeing them all listed together makes me feel all warms and fuzzy all over, like I have something special with my PDK (I can never remember the German name for PorscheDopplerKin..I can't remember. Manual: the reason is to row gears and to control when the shift is done without anything to tell you what to do. With what you said, I've just come to rely on PDK and gotten used to it. Mostly I just drive in automatic, but I don't have F1 style shifters. I have a 991 oddball shifters: little chrome levers at the corners of the bars that connect the steering wheel that has the round part. These levers can be pushed or pulled on either side of the steering wheel to be albe to move up or down in the gear range on either side. Of course I can also use the gear lever, by moving it over to the left. I can't even tell you which way the engagement goes, up or down to go into a lower or a higher gear. I don't use that feature because it is too slow and I can't really remember which way it should go when I need it. The steering wheel switches/shifters, on the other hand, I remember most of the time and even if I make a mistake, I immediately correct the mistake faster than someone else can manually shift, once. My version is an early spec 991. Some options usually available on the 991, were not even available on my car when I spec.'d it.

    "PDK reads your mind" Exactly. I avoided ordering a 992 Turbo S for a long time because of the lack of a manul option, but zero regrets. I really shifts like I would in most cases, and easy to override on the paddle shifters when you need to. It is not like any other car with a automatic. I still have other p-cars with manuals so I don't have to give it up entirely, but glad I have one with the PDK as it is truly amazing.

    Hey Nick, I've got a 2017 Golf with the 7 speed dsg which works the same as the PDK system. One thing I wanted to ask (if you knew this or not) is with coast mode - The golf has this available in the "eco-mode" driving selection and I was wondering if it does disengage the clutches, or if it increases wear on the clutches by having them both engaged? (is it the same as coasting in a manual with your foot on the clutch)

    Yeah manual for me as well. Love the spec of your car by the way Nick. Some very nice colour choices. I'd get the S instead of the 4S but that's just me.

    The manual weighs 44 lbs less than PDK. 44 lbs. Of rear end mass. 44 lbs. Andreas Preuninger is justifiably proud of shaving 5 lbs with the expensive magnesium roof of the GT3RS. This is 44 lbs right off the rear end. This is a big deal. Also if your manual goes bad out of warranty no biggie, couple grand. PDK? $20k. They don't fix PDK, they replace PDK. Other than missing these biggies, great video.

    nice video well done. my GT3 manual will shift gears WHILE keeping my foot planted on the gas. i dont have to lift off the gas. its extremely smooth with barely any interruption of power. wondering if other 911s have this?? and if not, why. it really levels the playing field between pdk vs manual....

    HI Nick, I have a 991.2 Targa 4S manual which I love, apart from the "clanking / chattering" of the transmission when I am travelling at low speed / low revs and torque is applied to or taken off the transmission. I have taken the car to the dealer three times to rectify, they have replaced the gearbox but it is still there. I have had two previous 911 manuals (997.2, 991.1) and neither had this problem. It is driving me nuts - does yours make the same noises or have you heard of any other 991.2 manuals having the same problem? Cheers Steve

    I drove MT for over 35 years, Porsche, Lotus, Mercedes and so on... I thought I would have never given up MT, but somehow I bought my last Porsche with a PDK and I love it. It's involving if you wish, just set it on Sport Plus, manual mode, and play with the paddles. Otherwise it's relaxing if you prefer cruising along and with your free hand - using Nick's words - scratch the vagina... sitting on the other seat :-)

    Nick, nice review ! But:
    -A PDK is maybe better for fuel economy but a PDK is much more heavy.
    -A PDK is not maintenance free, you have to change the oil every 40'000miles, and the clutch least in average 130'000 miles (but you've said should least the life of the car).
    Keep going, your content is great and mature !

    • @Angry-Lynx
      @Angry-Lynx 7 лет назад +6

      Good argument about weight, but u need to change oil in manual gearboxes also, so... ;)

    • @20yearsfromthepast
      @20yearsfromthepast 5 лет назад

      If you drive right rpm, your fuel economy will be better, just think for a second. And if you do quick shift, you will beat the dct's time, because manual's drivetrain loss is less than dct, thats science and fact. Shift like a grandma and say, "MAnUaLs aRe sLOw". Because of lazyning.

    Finaly a video that accurately shows a comparison between a manual and the PDK, the PDK is so different to the manual, its not really a direct comparison. Your brain says PDK your heart says manual.😀

    My 991.1 7 MT might be slightly different than your .2, but I think the manual transmission is still about 50 lbs lighter than the PDK. Clearly, the weight isn't hurting the PDK cars any! Also, do you find with the auto start/stop feature, it's a bit easier to control with the manual via the clutch pedal? If you are using it, but know the light or your traffic situation is going to change, you can just keep the clutch in, and the system won't engage. Can you modulate the brake pedal to do the same with PDK? (I don't know).

    • @motorwerksgroup
      @motorwerksgroup 6 лет назад +4

      Actually, the new 991.2 GT3 4.0L engine is MUCH better than the 911R 4.0L. The 991.2 GT3 is overall a better car than the 911R when considering all of the changes as a sum.

    • @danieldesmond3422
      @danieldesmond3422 6 лет назад

      motorwerksgroup that really depends on what you want out of your car. If you're all about lap times and shaving of milliseconds off your time then the GT3RS is for you but if you're in it for the driving experience then the 911R is now fun with its manual gearbox and no sound deadening it's a real drivers car 🚗
