    For what it's worth here's my opinion as stranger on the internet: you made the right decision Nick, 4 pipe exhaust looks better and honestly it sounds a bit better to me, you can hear more of intake sound instead of wooshing of the exhaust. Just sounds more natural to me. Nice!

  • @oDiProductions
    @oDiProductions 7 лет назад +13

    Wow, the sound of the Non PSE sounds quite similar to my 997.2 Turbo, like an angry vacuum cleaner (got some clips on my channel). Hoping to fix that with this new exhaust I got coming in! The sound of the PSE on the 4S sounds pretty sweet as far as turbo Porsches go

  • @pabzy2

    Absolutely agree. Whenever I'm on the Porsche configurator (because this is as close as I'll ever get to owning one) I keep the standard exhausts as it looks so much better and you're right, it does make it look wider. Maybe an aftermarket one would be the way to go.

    Great video. Have to say visually quad wins. It does look wider on camera. Noise sports exhaust wins. The crackle and pop are intoxicating outside. I think the best alternative is aftermarket with valves. Win win

  • @situation_zero
    @situation_zero 7 лет назад +7

    You made the right choice on the exhaust. Looks so much better. Sound difference is negligible inside cabin which is what matters for the driver. Your car would be perfect with the PDK. Oh well. As they say at the end of Some Like it Hot "Nobody's perfect." Cheers.

    I have a 991.1 with PSE, but I never knew that Sport Mode produced that beautiful crackly on deceleration. I learned a great lesson here, I will drive in Sport Mode for the rest of my days! Thanks.

    • @Trucho001
      @Trucho001 7 лет назад +1

      Jerry Mabary, i have a 991.1 and the crackle in Sport Plus mode (if you have Sport Chrono) is even louder and more exciting than in Sport mode.
      Make sure you place the car in Sport Plus and manual modes (if you have PDK). The crackles when you accelerate from first to, say 15 mph, and then let go of the pedal while staying in first gear are really loud and enjoyable.

    • @Trucho001
      @Trucho001 7 лет назад +1

      sunnyboy8644, pdk is the most intelligent transmission there is. The way it rev matches, the way it goes up the gears, is a really special experience. I must point out that my 991.1 911 has a clunky pdk. Three different dealers have told me that this is how pdk’s are. On the other hand, I have heard of other owners who report smooth transmissions.

  • @benroothooft2816
    @benroothooft2816 7 лет назад +4

    As always, great review Nick ! However, in my experience, in a 991.2 4S cabriolet, the PSE definitely IS a huge step forward from the standard exhaust and worth every penny. You should try it some day... switch the car into Sports mode and give it a serious go with the top down. You'll love it !

  • @thesushifiend
    @thesushifiend 5 лет назад

    My car is manual transmission with PSE and Sport Chrono, giving sport and Sport plus modes. In any mode, PSE does not sound much different when the engine is unloaded and revving freely. The difference really makes itself felt when accelerating hard, when the open valves make the exhaust sound much fuller and raspier. Engaging sport mode adds beautiful pops and crackles especially on a trailing throttle at 3k RPMs. Sport plus adds rev matching which means it's even easier to drop gears as you shed speed when approaching an intersection and that in turn means you'll hit the sweet spot for best trailing throttle pops and crackles much more often. I love it so much that I habitually drive in sport plus mode with PSE on, although on my car it also puts PASM into sport chassis mode and I switch it back to comfort mode before I drive off.

      Roman Teslya I don't get it. How exactly will it "help a lot"? With what? Why is everyone so bloody excited over the _exhaust_ system? It's where the exhaust comes out, that's all there is to it! It's not magic. This is snake oil, just like when hardcore (read: gullible idiot) audiophiles buy speaker cables of pure gold blessed by Tibetan monks and chemically treated with yak's pee for hideous amounts of money. Of course they _have_ to love the rich dynamic sound afterwards, to justify their investment... even though it's the same as before. The emperor still has no clothes...

      Benny Löfgren Cayman GTS here. No offense but it’s far from snake oil. Drive a Porsche like you stole it with revs way above 3500 and you hear the magic, also in the overrun, it’s sublime and puts a smile on your face. Go and test drive one, you have to experience it to understand.

    • @bennylofgren3208

      Ralf Peppekus Yeah, I know it sounds a little different. Big deal. It won't drive any different. It won't handle better. It won't go faster. It won't brake better. It won't corner better. It won't be better in any way whatsoever. It is just a gimmick to trick people out of their money. People who, just like those pathetic audiophiles by the way, won't ever be caught alive admitting they're spending thousands of dollars on placebo.

    Totally agree Nick. 4 pipes look (and to my ears sound) so much better. Every time I see a PSE 911 I can't stop myself from thinking VW Beetle (the original rear engined version)! Looks better and saves over £1800 (UK). That's a win-win in anyone's book!

    I"m looking to get a 991.2 C2 base and seeked one out without the sport exhaust. I find the sport exhaust way to annoying. The pops and burbles just make it sound like an internally broken exhaust. I don't want it in any way, shape or form on my car. The quad tips look so much better too. This video just cemented the decision. Thank you Nick!

  • @GregV8
    @GregV8 7 лет назад +1

    I'd like to add that in my experience, the cabin sound in a non-PSE car is actually sweeter and louder than that of a PSE equipped car (both in Sport mode). That "sound symposer" seems to be stronger for non PSE.
    PSE is for the outside world to hear you coming.

  • @cotswoldmusings
    @cotswoldmusings 7 лет назад

    Yes I agonised over this decision due to the look. I agree with you, in fact I asked could the standard base exhaust be converted to sport! Alas no. What I find is the cold start deep bark even without selecting sport creates a sense of warming the beast for the journey ahead.

    The button you are showing and pressing at 0:46 is the same button I have in my 2015 991.1 Carrera 4 GTS, yet I have the same exhaust configuration as in your car; the dual pipes on the left and the dual pipes on the right. And you are right, it does look a lot better. What I don't like on the newer 911s are the vertical fins on the engine lid. The horizontal ones look so much better and they make the car look wider.

  • @BertoniBertone
    @BertoniBertone 7 лет назад +2

    Very useful, Nick.
    One thing that you didn't pick up on...I think....which serves to consolidate the case for staying well away from the PSE on Gen 2 is that its actual 'volume' of noise cancels out the classic induction sound you still get with the Gen 2 further up the rev range. That classic flat-6 induction (admittedly more muted but in 'quality terms' still present & correct) is now masked by a nondescript racket: aka high volume PSE exhaust 'thrash'. Therefore, what exactly is the point in cancelling out the very sound you really want ? ....And note, I said 'sound', not just 'noise'.
    Combine that with the visually sad piece of 'stuck-on' plastic between the 2 central pipes on the Gen 2 PSE (Message to AG: centrally-exiting exhausts on Gen 2s should be close together like the GT cars....or quad pipes as on 997 and Gen 1s) as well as the optical illusion of 'narrowing' the car, you've got good reason to AVOID the Gen 2 PSE. Sad though...... if your heart's set on a GTS.... Get a 4S and add a Powerkit, maybe ? ;-)
    So, this only goes to show some folks out there continuously confuse 'more' with 'better': for 'sound enhancement' this is not the case.

    Actually im not sure if the sports exhaust sounds better. It gives a more aggressive sound in de midrange compared to the standard one. The standard exhaust gives a more 'progressive' sound to my ears(more sound en different sound in higher rpm). And with the better looking 4 tailpipes i'll choose the standard one.

    Thanks Nick, I've been waiting for this video comparison ever since you brought this car.
    I agree, the look of the quad-exhausts looks better, & the sports exhaust adds a little bit of a deeper sound.
    The next 911 (992) the sports exhaust will be louder & worth spending the extra $3000 USD.
    It will also look wider at the front & rear with a similar interior to the new Panamera.
    Q: Nick, will you consider buying the new 992?

    Thanks a lot for this vid, very nicely answered all possible PSE questions a potential 911 owner could have. Also I was not aware of that 3rd mode topic. When shopping our Macan my Porsche SA pointed out that a P-car already sounds good enough without PSE - I was actually quite surprised about his statement but it eventually gave me the impression that he's the down to earth type of guy, which is good. After 11 months ownership I have to say, below 3k rpm I don't want to hear much of the car, perfectly happy without PSE, while totally understanding why others get it. Same here, wouldn't have gotten it for a 911 just because of the looks.

    Individual mode needs to be programmed to the driver's preferences. I ticked the sport mode and sports exhausts boxes when programming mine so when I drive in individual mode (which is most of the time, but only after the engine comes up to operating temperature) it burbles away as you would expect. Ordering sports exhausts was the right decision for me. In saying that I am also glad I ordered keyless entry and drive as I appreciate being able to pop the boot open by placing my hand on the front bumper under the crest. I think many people will disagree with me on this point also and consider it an unnecessary expense. I would be pleased to have other subscribers view on the light design package.

    Hey Nick. Another great video, as usual. Someone may have already commented on this (I didn't read all the comments) but I wanted to correct one thing in your video. Based on my experience with my GTS, if you choose the Sport Mode as the driving mode in your Individual setting, you will get the crackles and pops the same as if you just manually select the Sport mode.

    Greetings from downunder! I agree that the PSE on the 991 appears to have a minimal impact on the sound and I probably wouldn't spec it for that reason..quite apart from the NON PSE quad pipes which I also agree look better. Having said that a standard 997.2 S is much quieter and as result I've fitted PSE and a backbox bypass....which sounds wonderful and also has the burbling on the overrun.

    Agree, looks so much better with quad. Wish sports came in quad, think it does now for 2021

    Hi Nick, I think the perception of width has more to do with the colour of the car than the number/location of the exhaust outlets. Having said that, I prefer the looks of the quad exhausts. Regardless of how many outlets, I'd also choose to go without the PSE - your car makes enough noise without it.

    Those "burbles and crackles" should be the engine delaying ignition to keep pressure in the turbo, the sport exhaust just makes them more audible

    Yup, standard exhaust looks better sports exhaust sounds better. What about upgrading to a aftermarket exhaust that looks similar to the stock one?

    Win win for nicks car. Quad exhaust looks the best. And Nicks car sounds betyer imo. Clean note. You can really hear the famous porsche flat 6 hum.

    It does work on individual if you set it to be sport. the individual mode you set it how u want it, it's not a default mode.

    Quad aftermarket exhaust would probably sound better and still look good

    Hi Nick! Thank you so very much! Your videos are entirely amazing and really beautiful in production quality, and the information presented, especially on the Porsche brand, so dearly needed and so very much appreciated! ... P.S. I agree with you, I think that the BEEG bum of the Carrera 911 991.2 4S with the four exhaust pipes, is entirely gorgeous :)!... P.P.S. I think the T-shirts from "Nick's Silly Shop" to be entirely great too :)!

    The sound of the standard exhaust may not be as loud, but it's better sounding than the artificial mechanical farts from the sports exhaust.

    I don't know, Nick, from the outside, yours sounded better, imo. The four pipes also make a huge difference. Good choice :)

    The comparos between 911's is like trying to decide between two supermodels. It's win-win.

    If anyone is interested in great sounds, a Cayman/boxster S (none 718) or higher with PSE is exhilarating in cabin and outside. No arguments. But for 911s I can see the debate on whether or not to get PSE (or maybe after market). The engine sounds quiet a bit further away (obviously) and the exhilaration is more diminished (obviously again, since Mid engine Vs rear engine and maybe even natural aspirated vs turbo). I have not driven a 911S, but I did heavy compare my Cayman GTS with a high specced base 991.1 that had sports exhaust and more comfort features, with the exhaust on it still sounded less exhilarating than the Cayman and sounded more tamed in cabin (cabin only). Cayman obviously destroyed the base 911 in terms of emotions, exhilaration, and well pretty much everything, then again, it also is supposed to be a bit more raw feeling than a comfort specced base 911 and costed quiet a bit more than the 911 I was looking at.

    Your decision was right. The serial exaust fits much better to the car and even the sound of the sport exaust isn't very impressive compared to the standard one ;) I ordered some weeks ago a BMW M140i (hatch version of M 240i but not available in the US). The standard exaust of this car is OK but I guess I will go to a complete exaust system from Remus or Akrapovic later. It is not the " level of noise" but the volume of the sound what makes them interesting (and by the way these kind of exaust systems bring around 15 HP more and also more Nm). Maybe that kind of stuff could be an option for your 911 too ;)

    I also prefer the look of the stock system. And if the sound is not loud enough, there are after market systems that will sound much better and louder than the expensive PSE system of Porsche. But I still think the 991 without turbo sound better...

    I fully agree, the regular (four pipes) version looks much better. I love the sound of the sport exhaust but wouldn’t take it for its looks.

    If you have the 991.2 in sport mode it will turn on the exhaust as well as give you lots of nice pops and bangs, if you only have the exhaust on its not as interesting.

    For the 3k you can get a exhaust system that’s really sounds like one and the 4 exhausts make the car look way wider and better imo
