    I've spent a fair bit of time driving the 991.1GTS and 991.2 C2S on windy roads. And have maybe 30 hours in the 992 C4. Sound: *no question* the 991.1. Here's the thing-- the 992 is an absolute beast. It's blazing fast, the steering GT3-like, and the power curve much more forgiving. The 991.2 feels in-between but smaller and more limber. You go to driving a 991.1 again and you're like "huh, that's kinda lame"... until you go to a windy road and really drive the 991.1 hard and can't help but laugh and smile. No, the 991.1 isn't the fastest. Of course not. The steering isn't quite as precise, the PDK feels a bit slower. Off the line the acceleration isn't as aggressive (it really starts to feel good around 5000) But very few cars I've driven have had me giggling like a child like that. It's *fun*. Truth is the 991.1 (even more so the GTS) is more car than you'll likely ever be able to safely drive on public roads.

    If you want a Turbo, buy a 991 3.8 Turbo instead of it's little sister. I had a choice, but I decided to buy the 991.1 GTS. The NA brings a lot more fun to my ears, heart and feel of the car. In the long run they will hold and maybe go up in value in time. Just look at the Ferrari NA 458 vs. There newer model the 488 Turbo. The Ferrari NA 458 are getting harder to find and more expensive to buy.

    I get that a mag called Total 911 has to keep all sorts of ardent Porsche fans happy, but it doesn't half end up being a totally pointless crock o' bollocks. I've bought a few issues, and it's always the same... Porsche's new car? Brilliant. The old one? Brilliant. Want to know which of 12 911 variants is the most fun? They all are. Air cooled vs water cooled? Both brilliant. Ever struggled to choose between a Mk1 or Mk2 996 GT3? Struggle no more - they're both precisely the same amount of brilliant. Fancy a water cooled 4 cylinder Porsche but not sure which one would work best for you? They all would. I mean... what is the effing point?

    Having just traded in my 991 gen 1 for a gen 2 I can without hesitation concur with their findings that the gen 2 is a far superior car. The NA engine in the gen 1 did have immediate throttle response, but this is not translated into 'pickup' unless you have over 5,000 rpm, which in the real world generally requires changing down 2 or 3 gears to find the surge in power. I've not noticed any discernable turbo lag in the gen 2 and having full torque at circa 2,000 rpm is a whole new fun packed experience. The 991.2 is an unbelievable machine with neck snapping performance, for the money it can't be beaten.

    As a prior 991.1 S owner and current owner of a 991.2 base I can say without hesitation the turbo is a good thing! My 991.2 base with pdk is ridiculously tractable at all times and ready to rip through the gears without hesitation. This is miles ahead of my 991.1 S MILES; imo. I think the turbos are small so they spin up quickly, the engine sounds great with the turbos!

      @@Mrhappy33664 Considering I bought my 991.1 GTS in 2018 when for the same money (more on that below) I could have bought a new 991.2 GTS, it pretty well tells you that I knew what I wanted. I wanted a naturally aspirated 911 much like my 993. I did not want turbos or a PDK. That said, I have driven the 992 C2S and C4S on the track with PDK and they are all very nice...on the track, but it is not a vehicle I would want as my own for back roads driving. The hit you in your butt with a turbo and the PDK would wear thin on me in no time and yes, I know the advantages of a turbo coming from the aviation world. I bought my 991.1 GTS with a mere 98 miles (157 km) on it when it was just over 3 years old and it came with $45,620 in mostly performance factory options. Yes it was expensive and I could easily have bought a new 991.2 GTS for that money. Try to find a used vehicle with only one very particular owner and then keep it. I can never understand why Porsche owners flip their cars so often.

    On my initial drive of the base Carrera 991.2, I was not blown away by the power and the sound certainly takes a hit. Extra Tq is nice for sure but I love the sound of the NA when revving it out.
    Still, I think as most of us predicted when the 3.0T was launching, those who like to modify their vehicles for extra power will appreciate the ease of tuning the new turbo engines. So that few MPH you mention becomes a substantial difference with a set of hybrid turbos and light supporting mods boasting 550+ to the wheels and 997 Turbo performance figures. I'm an old school forced induction junky and love the Tq from the onset and tuning potential provided going forward. Performance like that outweighs the sound for me.

    The only thing better about the 991.1 is the S wheels. They look better than the 991.2 S wheels. I wanted to buy a 991 with an S or 4S behind the 911 on the rear but after driving the base model 991.2, I was seriously impressed with the acceleration across all typical street driving scenarios. The interior updates are also greatly worth the step forward and the subtle exterior styling cues will be here a while. Lol, yeah they want you to buy it, but the sound differences are immense. i believe the 991.2 911 is faster, handels better with rear wheel steering and has turbos but doesn't that fundamentally change what the 911 edginess was all about. Much like the theoretical bull in a china shop, lamborghini. The porsches where famously different and difficult to get right but when you did it was magic. The 991.1 was a real game changer, new motor, better handeling, better sounding to me except for poor steering feel. but now, turbo-ing every 911 except a few is a mistake or a cold money grab calculation. i believe it's a money grab, could be wrong though. Think about it, more expensive to fix and who is supplying the turbos? China? Either way it's guaranteed to go down and take forever to get parts and cost more to repair or replace, on top of that, repairs to the flat 3.0 engine. Currently to replace a 3.4 flat 6 in a 911 is over 15k unless it's a rebuild, then add in labor. this shows me that you should keep your n/a porsches 911s, boxters/caymans their going to be worth alot more when you can no longer buy one, in gt3 or any other form. the problem i have with the change was that it was unnecessary, all those great motor, sad :'(.

    I lived with the .1 for quite some time. Totally agree, I'd have the .2, and drove them both on track.

      +Denis Leith interesting. I feel they too care of many quirks that irked me about the .1

    • @Bours911
      @Bours911 7 лет назад

      zkalireza which quirks exactly your talking about ?

    • @zkalireza
      @zkalireza 7 лет назад +5

      Bours911 for starters, when in Drive at a low rpm and in sport plus, floor the throttle, the clutch engagement is more aggressive on the .2. Also, when full throttle upshifting in sport plus in the .2 there is a nice thud rather than a lurch forward in the .1. Then there is the + and - orientation of the PDK center console selector which is now correct in the .2
      The sound symoser of the .1 had an ugly vacuume suction in the cabin that I could feel in my right ear drum. The .2 addressed it by putting two sound symposers that seem to cancel out this suction sensation of the ear drum.
      The steering on the .2 has much more fidelity than the .1
      And much more...

      zkalireza oh ok wow didnt know that very interesting man ! More feedback on steering in.2 ?

      991.2 - turbo
      Plus minor changes in design and aesthetics.

    Porsche doesn`t do "ballsed it up". With Porsche you know the latest product will be even better than the previous,no matter what. Hell,they even managed to turn the Panamera into a good LOOKING car. And that`s no small feat.

      It's always been like this with Porsche owners. The new car is always too soft and lacks [insert mechanical nostalgic technology] that the older car had. Porsche owners love to say "it's the last of the _____ cars"

    • @dagjohnsen
      @dagjohnsen 7 лет назад +1

      This is very true.
      The thing that is different now, is that Porsche is forced by green politics to use turbo engines.
      Anyway I believe most people will like the gen. 2 car more.
      It is very usable and effortless, fantastic car.
      Still I have to say for myself, I like gen 1 much better because of the engine characteristics and sound. That is more important to me.

      With the Gen 2 you get a 911 that's much nicer to drive, yet faster, more efficient, has more power, handles better, looks better and you still get the classic 911 howl. What more do you want?

    All it takes is one small leak on either turbo and you will have crippled engine performance. I’ve experienced this first-hand and will never own a turbocharged engine again.

  • @tony.775

    Almost pointless, anyone that has the gen-1 will not dis their purchase and those that are looking to buy will want the Gen-2.
    The vidd was about opinion, unbias one too without influence.
    Anyone without a 911 and want to buy, Gen-2 all the way, unless new cost is beyond them.

    looks like neither one was Manual, so who cares ? We all know that the NA Carrera is underpowered - you should have tested it against the NA Carrera S but you're not Scientists now are you....?

  • @sixpotshot
    @sixpotshot 2 года назад

    That's the problem...too much talk about the greatness of manuals and ICE / NA engines but (most) people are just lazy couch potatoes: something shifting it for me and just 2 pedals? Yes please... all the torque in the world without having to stretch my big toe? Oh yeah I'll have that... big mouths...the makers do know this well and for the rest of us who put the money where ours mouths are (both my cars are manuals and NA by the way...) there is barely anything left other than cars loaded with useless electronic junk, countless stupid modes (sometimes without a single one working properly...), (many times) laggy and distracting touch screens...requiring a pilot's preflight check list...the whole thing sucks...your money out of your pockets...even with a chip shortage affecting errrrr the gadgets... and works as a joy killer. Your outcome? Just and utterly disappointing 🤮
