  • If you want to own a sports car, you're going to have to learn how to drive a stick shift aka manual transmission. With all the technological advances to sports cars nowadays, owning a sports car isn't about buying the fastest car out there. It's about owning a car that maximizes driver involvement. I'll show you how to drive stick shift in my 6-speed 2010 Porsche 911 Carrera S (997.2 C2S). For more videos, check out the links below:

    Worth noting that 991.2 911s are REALLY easy to stall for some reason. They absolutely need more gas than you think to get going (1500 or so) and you have to very gently ease off the clutch. Don’t bother trying to get off quickly to save the clutch... you’ll just stall it

    Excellent video - getting back into a manual after about 26 yr hiatus. Well executed, thank you

    After driving manual for more than 3years, and the first time in a manual 997 I feel my self like a idiot for stalling 4 times in red light. It is really weirded you have to give it some gas for the car to move. However, all the car I drove before can move easily by just slowly release the clutch, which including modern Porsches.

      @@CarFanatic Sometimes a delay is experienced when shifting in lower gears that results in a short jolt.

      Slip the clutch a bit. Apply the gas more gradually. Don't granny shift and let revs drop too much between shifts

    Thank you for this video. I'm thinking of ordering my Boxster with MT even though I've never driven one before. Be honest - is that crazy?

      not crazy at all, i ordered my MT boxster in Noc 2021 and just got it this Feb 2023, and I have never owned a manual car before. only had about 30 hours of manual training before i got the car. it was scary at first but i am so glad i bought this car in manual, it's very rewarding even though i still stall it here and there but i am getting better

    is your left heel touching the floor when releasing clutch? I have been using my whole leg while clutching. Thanks

      I use my whole leg as well. Not really possible to keep the heel down given the clutch travel

      @@CarFanatic this makes me feel a lot better, because I watched somewhere the instructor said to use the heel settled on the floor, I found it is quite difficult to do, also the shoes will stuck on the floor mat also. Thanks for the clarification!

    Hello and thank you for the video. Its been a few years since I've driven manual and im quite nervous to inherit my late father's 911 Turbo 997. The car has 97k Miles with a fresh Clutch and is in excellent condition. I really want to baby the car the way he did and not burn through the clutch or ruin the transmission. Quick question: I was taught that, when downshifting and with clutch engaged to simultaneously increase RPMs for a smoother downshift. Does this prolong the life of the transmission? Are most manuals like this?
    thank you

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  Год назад

      Sorry to hear about your father. You're right about rev matching during downshifting. This is going to make it easier on the clutch. To do it, refer to the rev matching process in the video. You just want to blip the throttle little before you begin releasing the clutch. Alternatively, if this is too difficult to do at first, just release the clutch more slowly so it engages without creating shock on the drivetrain. Now, when braking, you'll need to learn to heel toe if you want to downshift at the same time. For street driving, you should never have to do this. Instead, just depress the clutch before coming to a complete stop.

    • @landonwebb8160
      @landonwebb8160 4 года назад +2

      The 911s have really big gears. In a normal car ride less the 911 first gear hits 55

    • @alfieboy4022
      @alfieboy4022 3 года назад +2

      In newer 911s I’ve found you have to be suuper gentle off the clutch (Very slowly ease it off) and add gas to not stall. Since 1st gear is so tall you absolutely need to use the clutch if you want to crawl for a bit (eg; move a little bit forward very slowly in traffic). Haven’t noticed abnormal clutch wear from doing this.

      Once you drive a manual you don't ever want to 'drive' an automatic. It's such a letdown.
