The tunes I know about on 997 turbos increases the maintenance schedule, especially plugs - which are difficult to replace because of where they're located. Not a problem necessarily, just something you should be aware of. But honestly, there's no way Porsche will cover any major service issues if your car has a tune. If your heated seats stop working sure, the tune won't matter in their eyes, but any mechanical problems and they'll blame the tune. I'd give it a couple of years, wait and see what tuners learn after these cars run their tunes for 30000+ miles. The 997 tuners know exactly what can happen and explain it all in detail. I'd worry I was guinea pig in the tuners experiment with the 991.2 because it's still so new.

Porsche sells their cars all over the world and some regions have strange conditions like extreme heat or high altitude which affects the performance. The Porsche claims respect this and people in flat regions with moderate weather get the optimal performance which is often above the official claim.

100% i've done MONTHS AND MONTHS of research and a T is the best bang for your buck in nearly all aspects (excluding creature comforts which seem endless in the Porsche configuration system). The only notable difference amongst the 911 models is horsepower.... and that can easily be remedied by larger turbos. Now, if we are talking "status whores", well a GT3 Touring would be hard to beat.... but if you're like myself, a driving car enthusiast, being smart with your money and picking the right toy is the way to go.

  • @michaellee8682

Great video Nick. These cars definitely need to be unlocked. I suffer from horsepower inferiority complex (H.I.C.) after paying over $100g for a car that wont keep up with a new Mustang GT. I have a 991.2 C2 manual that I’m planning to upgrade with Cobb’s off the shelf map and maybe upgrade the intercooler once my warranty is up. GIAC’s bench flashing sounds like a pain as you are carless for a couple of days waiting for them to ship back your ECU. Cobb has a plug and play platform through an OBD II port and sounds user friendly. You should definitely tune your car as there’s an uninstall feature. Also can you do a comparison video between the Carrera and Carrera S and go over the value proposition for road use and occasional track. With these new ECU tunes coming out, it makes it harder to choose an S unless you desperately need PTV, 6piston brakes, rear wheel steering. I agree with your stance on the GTS. Thx

I wouldn't touch a tune on a car that is still under any kind of warranty for obvious reasons. Sure, some might say it "shouldn't be an issue" but tell that to the guy that blows his engine and now has a $40,000 bill to replace it and the dealer/regional service rep finds either the tune or data collected that indicates higher boost ranges only possible by the tune. I have seen this happen in the past with less expensive cars, and you better believe it would happen with a Porsche. Outside a warranty? I am all for the Tune!

True, but some people have tons of money, so they don't care. The odds of your engine blowing, with a reasonable tune, is low. I'd probably chance it. Porsche sells an optional power kit for these cars which includes larger turbos, sports exhaust, and a tune. The engine is built for it.

My Audi dealer actually sells the APR tune in their service dept (which I did get). They are cool with it, but technically it does void your warranty and it says that on the invoice. However, they imply that you could switch the programming back to stock for any potential warranty claim as the tune can be reverted between stock and tuned programs by a simple switch.

Happy Christmas everyone! Nick, look for that Turbo and compare it to Mike’s C4S. Then you can decide if you want to chiptune your car. Not that there are reasons not to do it, since you have a manual gear and even as a stock car it’s difficult to compare it to others since nearly all Americans buy the PDK versions. If you decide to do it, let your dealership install the new chip. I did that with my Audi, and that way at least you’ll keep the guarantees on the car valid. Thx for the vid, like always! Cheers, Irwin

Nick, ecu tune crossed my mind as well, where I ended up was it’s less about a local service shop’s view point, rather once they plug in your vehicle, Porsche will receive the data points on your car. While nothing will happen at that point, there would be the issue if something does happen to your engine etc, they can point to the software regardless. Sure your can spend the energy fighting this back and forth if you have the time. For me, the real deal breaker was, these are still relatively new engines to the market and would like to see more feedback in a years time. Thoughts?

Did you also know, all Mercedes-Benz models these days are turbocharged, except for the GLE350. But in turn, every car that wears an Audi badge has a turbocharger in it or two (except for the R8). The company still put superchargers in most of their models and they haven't gotten a chance to kill all them of and replace them with new turbos.

I just saw this now. Excellent, informative video, Nick. I assume that if you want to mimick a turbo to some degree, then it's best to do this tuning on a 4S. My question is whether you think that if one does it with a S (RWD), then might you see more fishtailing or oversteer when driving on a track? Whatever the case, this seems like a great mod that's easy to do.

I just got a 2018 4s and consider a APR stage one. I still have 4 years of factory warranty/unlimited miles. Could you give any advise on have the tune and not void the factory warranty? Any tune friendly Porsche dealership you recommend? Thanks! Love your video!

$2000 is cheap? Sounds like Nick has already received his gift from Trumpy Claus!

If you have the opportunity it be great to see a Boxster tune against a stock Boxster

Thanks for the upload. Unfortunately most of my friends own corollas and civics so I'm kind of jealous.

Nick, does a 911 Turbo have the same tuning upside options available to get even more HP and torque?

Hey Nick, I was thinking would it be possible to do the opposite and limit the torque curve instead, making it feel more like a naturally aspirated engine? I believe Ferrari applies the same trick on lower gears on 488/California T.
Thank you for the video and merry Christmas!

Just checked what GIAC can do for my GTS...530hp/500tq. Unreal, that's seriously Turbo territory.

Who tuned the car, where is it available, does it void factory warranty ?

Southeast Exotics call GIAC or Softronic and ask them your questions. It’s super easy. Happy tuning!

It voids the warranty, no question. But it's only one year in the US? So soon not an issue any more. In Norway it's five years, so I'd leave it be. Besides, the 991.1 though not as tunable sounds a lot better!

That's an amazing amount of performance gain, especially especially when you no longer have to touch a wrench and/or spend hours installing a bunch of ill-fitting hardware on your engine. Does installing the tune effect your factory warranty?

It's not always about the power. Keep yours stock Nick. You know if you wanted more power, you would have bought something other than the 4S.

How much money did the Tune run you? What Specifically is the Tune Called, Who did it, and what exactly do they do? Do they hook up to your PCM and press update and it loads the new tune? Looking at a TT Porche and I am very familiar with Tunes via my Corvette. I tuned it on a Dyno many times via HP Tuners (or LS1 Edit), but curious about the Porche's and understanding their tuning proceedure, cost, etc etc

When you say your service staff/dealer is okay with a Stage 1 ECU tune, does that mean they're still honor the warranty that comes with the car? Cause if so, that is incredible, I'd get that 911 tuned right away
