A Boxster GTS 4.0 is plenty loud and the top goes up and down in about 10 seconds using a button next to the driver. It’s plenty special too for less than half the price. The RS is fantastic and amazing but for the rest of us a GTS/S/Base is just as fun.
a BGTS 4.0 with some aftermarket bms filters, and some mild exhaust work will give you about 75% of this experience in the real world. At least so I've been told, will be able to confirm when mine arrives, and I have Over axle pipes, and bmc filters waiting for it. The roof is probably the biggest let down on the spyder rs, to much for the real world, the power top in the gts is nice and easy.
Owner of the Spyder RS is really good presenter when explaining how to deal with the manual roof. No unnecessary BS, just clear explanation with some good jokes.
Best car Porsche makes. Big engine, small / light car, convertible, well tuned suspension, and a soundtrack that is ICE heaven. Best / last of breed. One for the ages.

But to be honest, a manual in this car would have stomped all over the speedster’s toes, a much more expensive car, and they were never going to do that. (not to mention they don’t have a manual that fits) Those rapid fire downshifts, though, with this pdk…those downshift barks are pure aural bliss. IMO
As a 718 Spyder owner it was comical to watch how much more complicated the Spyder RS roof was than mine. But I was also fascinated at how easy the Speedster roof was compared to mine. 718 Spyder base roof gets easier every time you put it up or down - 35-45 seconds max. Different than most I love the manual aspects of it. Adds to the charm of the car. Cheers!

It looks great with a painted bonnet. The roof is simple if you have a friend to help you. Pretty much impossible to do on your own. The engine is incredible. The suspension is significantly softer than the GT4 RS which makes it possible to use more often.
That roof is the ultimate Porsche tax for what is the ultimate Boxster. The more you pay, the more they tax you... 😉 Another fab video - thanks Nick and Noah.

Nick: it’s only took 6 months after I received my allocation. But, I now have a new 2024 Cayman S in Chalk with graphite blue full leather interior, sports chrono, 20 in wheels, and a manual transmission. Thank you for your previous video on this model.

I had a '90 IROC-Z convertible back in the day and it was a manual roof and could be a pain in the butt as well, but that Porsche takes it all to a who other level! Why buy one like that would be my question, I'd rather just have a coupe! Happy motoring Nick! Cheers and say Hi to William!
My z4 power top broke and I have been raising it manually for about a month. If anyone asks I tell them it's like a Spyder RS. Now I know the Spyder RS is way worse than my z4, so thank you for this video
Hence the reason I am very happy with my standard 718 Boxster that I use to travel all over Europe with the same exhilarating experience when driving a Porsche for half the price.
Any thoughts on the speedster vs the Spyder rs (apart from the roof mechanism) ? In my eyes the speedster looks the part, but how does the driving experience compare?
If it’s too loud, you’re too old. :). Seriously though, I owned a GT4RS and used it as my daily driver. Puts lots of miles on it. It was loud (and awesome) but not anywhere close to being painfully loud.
I think it is a potential collection car which would worth a lot. It is a fairwell to 718 (since new ones will be electric we can call that 718 is over) and it is the first time we see GT3 engine in a convertible…
My friend just took delivery of his Spyder RS a few weeks ago and I’ve driven in it twice. I guess my hearing isn’t that sensitive (although I doubt it) as I don’t understand people complaining about the car being too loud and bothering their ears, car sounds amazing and is not objectionable at all in my opinion
A 911 Coupe is more sought after than a 911 Cabriolet judging from the preowned prices. I believe 911 purists just love the sweeping roof lines of a 911. A 718 GT4RS is a 718 and has a decibel that makes the driver hearing bad too. Porsche sells more 911 than 718, even though a 911 costs much more than a 718, which explains 911 is more desirable amongst Porsche enthusiasts.

Unrelated note, my BGTS 4.0 6spd will arrive by the end of the summer hopefully, I was able to watch all your videos going over what options to get, on various porches and have taken none of your advice. Nonetheless Should be exciting. I looked at the spyder RS, and it was amazing, but for the 200k+ ( that I could not afford anyway) or the 115k (probably also can't afford) for the GTS 4.0, I realized it made more sense for a daily, and this is what I will continue telling myself to sleep better at night until I collect more dollars and can purchase one anyway.

As a 981 Spyder owner who might consider buying the RS, I can look past the absolutely BRUTAL roof design on the RS, but what I can’t look past is the lack of a manual option. I can understand the Cayman GT4RS having PDK as it makes more sense for the track, but a Spyder MUST have a manual transmission IMO. I’ll hold on to my 981!
I’ve noticed most people that hate the roof haven’t experienced it in real life - try it out if you get a chance. I’d rather have that style so I can run the Bimini top up and weather protector (the rear piece) off. Ironically I only drive manual cars and everything else I own is stick. I almost didn’t accept the Spyder allocation because it’s PDK but after driving it a bunch - I find I miss the third pedal much less than I thought I would. Me 8 months ago couldn’t even fathom that I’m typing that out right now but it’s true. If you’re ever in the New England area shoot me a message and I’ll take you for a spin. Enjoy the 981!
At least watch ONCE how the top should be put up/down. (There is even a QRcode on the top.) Because you removed at 12:12 the clips from their place which should be NOT removed. You can roll it up with that. Just like in the manual. That keeps the tabs under the tall part of the back lid. That's why you wasn't able to close the lid.

You can swap the gt3 gear leaver to replace the "shaver" so no need to worry too much abt it

That depends on your hearing sensitivity, not age. I had to use earplugs in a gt4rs
So RS or Spyder w a 6MT, short gears, x-pipe exhaust (maybe LT headers too) and a tune?

I did my tax return in the time it took to take the roof off and it was more enjoyable.
