Joichiro is more of a prodigy, but Soma is relentless.
That's soma power.
Even joichiro was not a prodigy...he was talented of course....but he worked his asss offf trying new things out and constantly improving....but others termed him to be a genius because if they dont and just acknowledge the fact that he worked hard they would be just acknowledging the fact that they didnt work hard themselves....same with soma....he doesnt have the skills of hayama and kurokiba....yet he was able to go head to head with them during the autumn elections....and later surpass them
Soma surpassing those two is still debatable

@@BALLI5tICAL I mean we don’t really know the current strength of kurokiba and hayama as we didn’t get to see them train and they weren’t in blue. So they could just be totally op and we didn’t even know it
They mention it as well. Souma getting stronger when he got experience from stronger foes. Imagine that 490 losses.. this is really practice makes perfect no special ability to him but pure persistency and hardwork
Joichiro even said that he didn't see any inate talent for cooking in Soma. But when he was introduced to it, he saw Soma's curiosity and persistence to get better. And for 10 years of Shokugeki against his dad, professional experience, and experimenting in his free time, Soma made himself into a prodigy.
Not only that, Joichiro never held back, now that's a true father son competition

I've seen a lot of flashback episodes of mentors/father figures in other animes, but I think this might be one of the better ones. It really highlights Joichiro, a guy we all think is really cool, but also establishes why Souma is the protagonist of this story. At the end of the day, this is a manga/anime that has a loving focus on cooking, and Souma represents the character who has a great passion and love for it.

This just shows anyone can keep up, be equal to a true genius with hardwork, experience, and failures. Geiuses have it easy but others can also achieve or even surpass what they accomplish as long as they persevere. What an inspirational anime

You know I just realized something...is Sokugeki no Soma the only shounen anime around where the protagonist still has his father in his life? The only other series I can think of is Initial D....mind you the mothers are gone in both.

Nah, he still prodigy but he also works hard to overcome his father (which is a genius). I mean,you still have to be prodigy to be at his level at his age or else you would end up like his mom.. 😅

They addressed burnout in this anime, like I am sure that’s what joichiro went through

This anime is still one of my favorites. The 2nd half was rushed but still enjoyable. I wish the author took time and we got to see all 3 years of Soma in Tokutsti where he honed his craft. Blue should have been a competition where all the best young international talents compete. Instead the story was shoved into 1 and 1/2 years of his school life. I wish the author took his time.

This anime reminds me of Ryoma and Nanjiro relationship in Prince of Tennis. Ryoma and Soma wants to beat their seniors really bad. But with that goal, they are getting better and heads and shoulders above their competition.
this is the first time i saw a PoT comment and i have to agree with you because i also thought the same. actually there are some characters here that reminded me of other characters in PoT.

When Souma becomes the 1st seat and has beaten all of the competition in the Academy, he'll have a rematch with his father one last time in the series and loses again. With a grin in his face, he still pushes forward to beat his dad.
That's not bad for Soma because Joichiro is an expert chef. Sure, winning a match with his father is a monumental thing for the both of them but a teen winning against a chef who is reknowned as one of the best is basically unrealistic.

Joichiro took the Yukihira surname when he married Tamako. That's why Soma has the Yukihira surname. Plus he also wanted anonymity.
Maybe Joichiro didn’t want push any pressure to Soma because of his name. People will recognize his name and will ask about his father, expect great things from Soma and Soma will be lost in the storm just like his father because of it

I dont know if u can still read this. But spoilers ahead.
Joichiro is considered a genius back in totsuki he literally 1v50 a group of students and earned a title "ashura" but because of too much pressure of always meeting or exceeding the expectation of people, because people just care about the results and not the hardwork he suffered an emotional trauma and joichiro left japan and starts to travel that's his last day in totsuki.

@@cielkai9397 If im correct he left at 2nd year in totsuki so he didn't graduate. Nakiri's dad is the 3rd seat during his first year in totsuki. Azami (nakiri's dad) really likes joichiro to the point that his reason is to clean the current totsuki and only allow superior and best students to stay because he believe that the current totsuki is composed of trash students. Because during their time he believe that the reason joichiro left is because totsuki is toxic to joichiro that's why he want to change it.
