It’s beyond me how those family members are able to sit through these trials and have to constantly hear, see, and learn about this monster. I wouldn’t be able to be in the same room with him. It really speaks to how strong they are
It does take a lot of strength to sit there and learn exactly what happened that day when that monster opened fire. I know the families have a choice whether or not they want to be in the courtroom buy I think I would have to be there. I would want to hear every little detail of what happened that horrific day. That's just me. But those families who choose not to be there, I don't fault them at all. I guess you never really know what you'd do unless you were in that situation. My heart ❤️ hurts for all of them.
In my opinion, they want answers. They want to know why their children didn’t return home that day at it’s core. They want justice and probably at the end of it, some kind of closure, even though the death penalty may not be enough

It is trying to get the jury to render a life sentence verdict when he deserves a death sentence verdict.
People still deserve due process whether you think so or not.
I love how the family members are beginning to smile because his Insanity Defense went down in a ball of flames today. Probably the first time in a long time they've had anything to smile about, bless their hearts.
From what I have read; Nikolas Cruz had initially pleaded Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity to avoid being sentenced to death, but he ultimately changed his plea to Guilty after what I presume was Cruz's realization that pleading Guilty would spare the families of the victims as well as the survivors and their families the pain of watching him stand trial. I also strongly believe that while he has a very long history of mental health issues; I don't think that Cruz was insane at the time of his crime due to his social media posts indicating that he was fully aware that his actions were wrong but he didn't care about the consequences.

He tries to act like a “good little boy” SO BADLY. Notice how he asks irrelevant questions to come off as sincere. It’s a tactic used to make you feel like he’s trying to cooperate when really it’s asking you to lower your guard so he can lie easier.

He’s extremely smart and that’s what’s makes it scary. He reads everything and remembers almost everything he reads. In my opinion he’s just a really wicked, disturbed kid. I don’t see his regret as a watch the interview but our justice system requires everyone to be heard even when he in fact kills the president.
I like this guy. He breaks it down without being condescending. Explains his reasons for his observations and I appreciate that in legal cases where folk don’t always understand medical terms etc.
I don't think the defense team are happy with what we just saw. He now clearly proved he speaks well, read books and have a good memory. He is like two persons.
One side is a well spoken nerd and the other side is angry and explosive.

I’m not sure they are that impacted by it. They are public defenders who had no choice in being his representation. They actually tried to get a judge to overturn the decision to make him pay for his own lawyers. But his inheritance from his mom is being contested in court so he doesn’t actually have any money to his name. So the judge overruled it and here we are.
They are doing a great service by giving it their all in defending him because they are pretty much guaranteeing he can’t come back and say they failed as lawyers. This prevents putting the victims through another trial. And in every single trial, lawyers call for mistrials. If they did not motion for one, it would be suspect that they were not truly trying to defend him. So it was very stupid of the judge to say their motion for mistrial was stupid when she should have understood they *knew* it wouldn’t actually happen, it never actually does result in anything unless something wild happens, they were just doing it to have on record they did everything they could.
I don't live in the states but can anyone tell me. If a person has personality disorders and commits murder, are they usually sentenced to death?

Watching now after the verdict. No wonder the parents are so angry!!! This "person" understands completely what he did. I see him sitting there in the jury room with no emotion, no regret as the parents speak. He reminds me of Dahmer. Disgusting. Many of us have also suffered physically and mentally in childhood -- that is no excuse for what he did and "what" he is.
In watching NC during this penalty phase, IMO, he enjoys the attention. He has definitely become close to the person to his right. How the family members are able to see his reactions and listen to the tapes is a testament to their strength. These families have lived through the loss of those who were murdered. Unfortunately, some families may not be able to remain intact. Every day, a family member, a friend, a mentor is no longer there. Let us not forget those who survived.
Those killings didn't have to happen, if he would have been locked in a psych ward, givin all the social services, medicine (correctly) materials of reading to turn away his demons. Look how his progression after four years of isolation, structure and treatment. Parents failed, educators failed, doctors failed.
Seems like he wants to impress the Dr performing the exam.

I went to school with him graduated from stoneman Douglas in 2016 and sadly I do remember him walking around and sometimes I would see him get bullied and laughed at for running to class and for lunch for example or for acting weird occasionally. There is no excuse at all for what he did but every once in a while occasionally I wonder if he had not been bullied and laughed at so much for being “weird” then he wouldn’t of committed these acts. Of course thousands of kids are bullied every day and they don’t go shooting up schools. But that thought “what if” crosses the back of my mind now and then.

I cant stand bullies. I used to work in elementary schools as an aide. Id often hangout with the kids who didnt have many friends and try to pair them up with other nice kids.
It starts in elementary school and gets worse be middle school & high school.
I dont understand why teens think its ok to single other students & people out to bully & make their loves miserable.
Why? Because they are different, look different? What makes a bully type teenager think he or she is any better than someone else?
I wish every teacher and school administrators would talk about bullying at least once a week in their classes.
And, if they need to keep a student in for lunch or try to help he or she make friends. Although, teachers already have alot on their plates as is.
I worry daily abt my grandbabies in high school. I ask them from time to time if they are bullied. 😢

That seems to be a common denominator for school shootings & other mass shootings. Also, not having a father role model around while growing up. Lack of understanding of his mental issues, and feeling all alone, bullied. No one to truly talk to.

Did you happen to know any of the victims, teachers or families? Ive written to Alex parents. Alex dad has worked very hard trying to bring awareness to schools in alot of areas when it comes to safety and bullying. All in the name of his 14yr old son, Alex who was sitting at his desk when killed. Max is his father.

He was like this long before. I was SA’d by other students then bullied for telling them no. I pray that the more people that understand this can use this tragedy to recognize potential at risk school systems to hopefully prevent this from devasting so many lives in the future.

Pausing around the 15:33 mark…. My son was misdiagnosed for 14 years. He was diagnosed with all sorts of other things- until last year when he was given the autism diagnosis. He always makes eye contact until his bubble bursts. Some autistic people can communicate- when my son has a meltdown- the first thing out the window is communication and all he does is scream curse words in your face. That was a very misguided/misspoken statement. Now- with that being said…. Was NC did is so beyond disturbing- I do believe he lied and tried to manipulate and use behavioral health reasons as his excuse. There is no excuse. Autism, FAS, trauma…. Nothing causes you to murder 17 and injure 17 more other than your own demonic choices. Quit misspeaking about actual facts- your going to harm the autistic/fas communities- 😢🤬. Prayers for the victims and families. May the jury be guided to do what’s right. ❤

This psychiatrist did a great job interviewing him and looked at all his records since childhood and explained everything in simple ways that proved this evil entity is not that he felt through the cracks throughout his life; he got a lot of help and to me his problem or issue is discipline or authority and they’re bullies, try to get attention and he wants to be in control of others.
Not all individuals with autism fail to make eye contact or express with hands. That is a risky assessment to express as an almost blanket statement. And there can be extreme intelligence and recall - especially with high functioning autism - to the point of genius. Yet socially inept & functioning at a lower cognitive age vs chronological age.
I think his mother latched on to the autistic thing as a way of making excuses for him. This guy is not the first to say he’s not autistic. Just listening to him, Autism would not come to mind.

This interview shows how different his life could have been had someone actually been engaged with him and put effort towards helping him in a sincere way. He wants love and acceptance so badly. I think his life would have been very different with the right intervention.

There were more chances given to him than most. He’s responsible for this act alone. This act that changed everyone’s lives around him and his own. He thought this out before he did this… The fact that he thought about this at all… You stare into the abyss too long, it’ll stare back at you.
That’s pretty naive. One of the witnesses tried that and talked about it at length. A child who puts a gun to his mother’s head and threatens to kill her needs to be put in a place where he can’t hurt anybody.
Knowing right from wrong, and not being insane does not mean a person does not have other psychiatric issues.
But unless your psychiatric issues means that you were incapable of understanding that what you were doing was wrong…psychiatric issues don’t shield you from the death penalty.
Pretty much every serial killer or mass murder has some amount of psychological issues.
Well adjusted, high functioning people rarely, if ever, commit 1st degree murder.

Indeed. The majority of people in prison or jail are struggling with mental illness but no help - or very little, non routine help - is given because they're not legally insane. Yet we expect them to go back into society as motivated functioning members when they were just treated like cattle and forced to be in a building with other severely mentally ill and violent people or gang members.

The psychiatrist totally destroyed nearly all the groundwork the defense tried to produce for close arguments they hoped to make. I thoroughly enjoyed the way the psychiatrist used what appeared to Cruz to be casual tangential conversation to find out all sorts of things about Cruz for evaluation of him. For example, the memory capabilities evaluation, based on the seemingly "casual" conversation about chess that Cruz walked into all by himself, was amazing. At every turn, when Cruz thought he was just being chatty, the psychiatrist was actually building evidence about Cruz to reach some of the psychiatrist's most important evaluation conclusions. This psychiatrist is quite clever.

I can't help but feel bad for all of his wasted potential, maybe if he had gotten the help he needed, or the right role models in life, his life would have turned out very differently.
Perhaps. Perhaps not. There are millions who live and die, with horrible parenting and lack of good role models. And many many did NOT COMMIT MASS MURDER EITHER! There is no such thing as a perfect life. We all have strengths and weaknesses. But we all also have choices. It was his choices that explain his actions. He will have to explain his own rationalizations for it.
From what I have heard he had more counselling and special programs in school than most of us have had in our lifetimes. And he had a very loving supportive mother. I feel very bad that he got bullied so much. I get how painful that is We all react differently to the trauma in our lives. Unfortunately he turned it into rage at others. With disastrous results. And there is obviously some mental health issues going on with him. But he absolutely knew what he was doing and the consequences of those actions
@@gingerninjam9127 I believe all the crack his mother was smoking and alcohol she was drinking while she was pregnant could have damaged his brain, and his impulse control, so he couldn't push back anger to the back of his mind when he was bullied, etc, like normal people can. He was known to have anger issues and get into fights at school for seemingly petty things. Obviously it doesn't excuse what he did, if it were up to me I'd give him the death penalty, he deserves it.

If I committed a crime like that I wouldn’t be doing interviews. The only words I would tell the judge is “Let’s just make this easy and just sentence me to death” forget the trial and this whole waiting period. Let’s just get it over with today and stop wasting time on this. Simple as that.

The Stanford Prison Experiment was so horrific that they had to call it off after six days. It is often studied as the biggest example of the most unethical studies done in the field.
Male students were offered $15 per day to participate in a "psychological study of prison life". After a large amount of psychological interviewing and analysis of the participants half were selected to be "guards" and given a uniform to de-individuate them. They were then given the other half as their "prisoners", who were given their own uniform, mo that the creator of the experiment (Phillip Zimbardo) was confronted by his wife (also a psychology expert and teacher at Stanford) after she saw what they were experiencing. The experiment was stopped the following day. One of the reasons this experiment is studied and cited as one of the worst is because the psychological damage the "prisoners" suffered. Also that it wound up contadicting what it set out to prove.
It is actually the subject of a good movie called The Stanford Prison Experiment, starring Ezra Miller, which in turn was based on the book called 'The Lucifer Effect" by Zimbardo himself.
I’d like to imagine these families cheering the day the verdict says he’s getting the death penalty.

I feel they’ll be let down no matter which way it goes. It won’t make them whole sadly. No one knows what we’d do in the scenario but it seems like I’d just try to move on with life while remembering the good moments with my child and ignore this trial.
Can’t imagine there’s much benefit to hearing the details of your child’s murder over and over when the only thing being discussed is whether he’s dead in 20 years vs 60 years and you have no influence over the outcome.

Cruz murdered those kids over three years ago and their having this trial. A wast of tax payer money and pain on the victims families. He did it, they have him on camera, he confessed to the deed. Enough said. Let him rot and be done with it. Let the country heal and the families. This is torture on them.
This trial is part of the sentencing phase. They already knew he did it so now they're determining if he should get the death penalty or life.

I know. My son is perpetually ignored at school and bullied at times. He's 10. I'm so scared that he will begin feeling invisible, depressed and resent people for not caring. That can easily turn badly. I have tremendous sympathy for both kids like him and the victims.

Why did Dr. Scott get the Stanford Prison Experiment so wrong? It's like he combined this study with the Milgram Experiment and then added random details (like the role reversal, which never happened). I have a minor in psych and haven't taken a psych class in ages but still know these studies intimately due to their prominence in his profession. Maybe not important, but little details like this make "expert witnesses" a little hard to take at face value....

For those talking about the defense lawyers:
They are public defenders who had no choice in being his representation. They actually tried to get a judge to overturn the decision so he would have to pay for his own lawyers. But his inheritance from his mom is being contested in court so he doesn’t actually have any money to his name. So the judge overruled it and here we are.
They are doing a great service by giving it their all in defending him because they are pretty much guaranteeing he can’t come back and say they sabotaged him. This prevents putting the victims through another trial. And in every single trial, lawyers call for mistrials. If they did not motion for one, it would be suspect that they were not truly trying to defend him. So it was very stupid of the judge to say their motion for mistrial was stupid when she should have understood they *knew* it wouldn’t actually happen, it never actually does result in anything unless something wild happens, they were just doing it to have on record they did everything they could. Aside from Nick, the slimy person in the courtroom is the judge. She seems to enjoy pretending to be holier than thou with the defense when she absolutely knows better and should be appreciative of their efforts to keep our justice system intact. She is just putting on a show for the cameras. The prosecutors and public defenders seem to have an understanding and respect for each other, the prosecutors have even told the judge to chill out at times, which tells you they all understand what’s truly going on in the courtroom.
The problem is.... this judge is letting her emotions and bias getting out. Unless you're a left wing nut job being an actual GOOD unbiased judge is extremely difficult. Which is the reason why we should all count ourselves lucky that the judge is not also the jury like it was way back in the day before we were born. You sway a judge you win or anger her you lose. Let the judge have her tantrums. Typical female can't keep emotions in check. Just kidding. But seriously consider ourselves lucky. I'd be pretty mad at the school system too because I know how the kid turned out the way he did and that nothing I do can stop it by being a judge. It all starts with bullies.

I have a family member who is able to make eye contact and one who does not. The ignorance surrounding neurological disorders is astounding. Most “experts” don’t know $hit!!! For example, NC’s comments about leadership was him simply repeating what was taught in the classroom. He does not have an innate sense of empathy. He is not wired that way and therefore does not have such capacity. Sadly, this person never got his needs met which resulted in this tragedy. It’s a travesty we lost these beautiful souls. The reality is we must address mental health and access to weapons to STOP the violence. This is heartbreaking. 💔 As a society we lack the knowledge to do what is necessary to stop this cycle. I have a doughter with the same violent verbal expression, but she can't stand interactions between 2 people for more than 3 minutes without make a huge effort to keep comfort. If someone tries to physically engage with her. She will fight back as defense or as dislike the approaches.

This sentencing needs to be OVER. Yet the Court will decide in 3 years. I have been going to district Court 5 years to adopt a child I had as a foster parent. Lawyers and judges are pals. I have yet to obtain termination of parental rights. The children are NOT the priority. DCS and CASA were not helpful.

Nothing excuses what this person did. But I did find the prosecution’s expert witness’s understanding of autism and memory issues to be stereotypical & incomplete. You can be knowledgeable &!remember a lot of facts, & still have short term memory issues. You can be on the autism spectrum & still initiate interactions or make eye contact.

I went through a few diagnosis like mixed anxiety-depressive disorder, then bipolar disorder, etc but only now (I'm 26) there has been discussions with my psych that I can be on the autism spectrum, high functioning, and these other disorders would be a consequence. So I do struggle a bit with keeping eye contact, but I can do it. I can read perfectly well and remember things. I notice it's way more about the social symptoms. So I'd pass these tests, but I would fail to make friends, to touch or be touched, to hear noises, to not be aggressive and isolated, and so on. The spectrum has a very twisted line, it's not that straight as he put it. Is this enough to make one kill so many people? I don't think so, but the isolation turns you into an animal, really. You lose a lot from reality. And previous talks show he did struggle with it.

And the witness also incorrectly testified to the conclusion of the study as power corrupts was not the take away but was subsequently inferred
If only they had bothered with this level of psychological scrutiny and analysis when he was in school and struggling to pass. Maybe he wouldn't have been such an angry, bitter person inside.
